Sun Dec 22, 4:00 PM
DIALOGUE - TOWARDS AN ALTERNATIVE
"TRAILS OF DISSENT " BOOK RELEASE on 22nd Dec at 4pm
Dialogue - Towards an alternative, as a platform was formed to provide space for discussions with a hope to increase the culture of scientific approach towards contemporary sociological and political issues. In the past year this platform has-been able to conduct insightful discussions on various issues. It tried to inculcate a scientific understanding to this generation about the current political atmosphere. In this process the platform learned and analysed multiple issues to pump alternate ideas into the society.
Now we are bringing out this book consolidating all that this platform has learned and talked concerning many crucial issues for the past one year. From honor killing to conflict of Kashmir, from Hindutva to mining, from me too to dissent, New education policy to NRC. In this book we have tried to discuss many subjects that have majorly impacted our country this year. We hope you accept this book from us young writers with the same volume of love that you have been showering on this platform.

'Mudda Ghatak Hai'
Sun Dec 22, 7:00 PM
Nishtha Pandey
Our society has a set of ideas about how we expect men and women to dress, behave, and present themselves. About how we define 'love'. About how we ask everyone to fit into tight compartments of stereotypes. Now it's high time to ask WHY? The street play titled 'Mudda Ghatak Hai' asks these very critical questions. Directed, written and performed by the students of street play team 'Bedari'. This play intices the inequalities that have been present among different genders in the Indian society, since the very beginning of time, with fitting references to Indian mythology, Bollywood songs or the so-called 'hit numbers' to the references to our everyday news of tragic events with respect to the same. This play includes symbolic representation of concerns such as discrimination against LGBTQ+ community, toxic masculinity and female infanticide shedding light upon the humiliating practices of slut-shaming, the killing of a girl child and corrective rape. It ultimately reflects the functioning of the society forever since, reiterating the idea of dharma or justice from the Indian mythology that we preach. All we want to convey is that 'Stereotypes Don't Define Us' and now it's high time that the society accepts this because Mudda Bahut Ghatak Hai!!

Cricket Country by Dr.Prashant Kidambi - Book Discussion.

Dr.Prashant Kidambi, the author of the book, will be discussing the book with Mr. Ram Manohar Reddy, Editor of “The India Forum”, a digital publication on contemporary issues.
Tue Dec 24, 7:30 PM.

Lamakaan - An Open Cultural Space
Cricket Country has won the Sportsbook of the year award at the Ekamra Sports Literature Festival and also been selected as one of FT’s best books of 2019.
“On the morning of 6 May 1911, a large crowd gathered at Bombay’s Ballard Pier. They were there to bid farewell to a motley group of sixteen Indian men who were about to undertake a historic voyage to London. The persons whom the crowd cheered that sultry Saturday morning were members of the first All-India cricket team.
Conceived by an unlikely coalition of imperial and Indian elites, it took twelve years and three failed attempts before an ‘Indian’ cricket team made its debut on the playing fields of imperial Britain in the blazing coronation summer of 1911.
This is a capacious tale with an improbable cast of characters set against the backdrop of revolutionary protest and princely intrigue. The captain of the Indian team was nineteen-year old Bhupinder Singh, the embattled Maharaja of Patiala. The other cricketers were selected on the basis of their religious identity. Most remarkable, for the day, was the presence in the side of two Dalits: the Palwankar brothers, Baloo and Shivram.
Drawing on an unparalleled range of original archival sources, Cricket Country is the untold story of how the idea of India was fashioned on the cricket pitch in the high noon of empire”.

About the Book:
The legend of Bhagmati, the supposed lover of Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, Hyderabad's founder, has been a matter of intense discussion from years, if not decades. Journalist Serish Nanisetti, who has been writing about Hyderabad's heritage from years, and who has done enough research to now be an authority on Golconda history, answers some of these questions in his latest book, which has been built on information gathered from several sources over a matter of 10 years. So come join us for a talk and learn about the history of Golconda, which is important to understand the core culture of our city. The talk will be moderated by Yunus Y. Lasania, Serish's former colleague and fellow journalist. Both of them together run The Hyderabad History Project, a blog (more active on Instagram), to dig out the lesser-known aspects of Hyderabad's history.

About the author:
Serish Nanisetti is author of ‘Golconda Bagnagar Hyderabad – Rise and fall of a global metropolis in medieval India’, which is a narrative chronicle of the city during the Qutb Shahi era. A journalist with The Hindu in Hyderabad, he has extensively researched, written and photographed the city.

Main Rahi Masoom
Sat Jan 4, 7:30 PM
Sutradhar
About the play:

MAIN RAHI MASOOM, a solo performance enacted by Vinay Varma and directed by Prof. Bhaskar Shewalkar is a biographical sketch of the famous Hindi and Urdu writer, the Late Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza. This performance is first of its kind on Rahi.

This 70-minute poignant monologue shows how Rahi detested communal and vote-bank politics, and how he fought against the divisive forces in the country through his writings. He was a strong nationalist first and a Muslim next. He also staunchly opposed pseudo-secularism. Sample this: “main ek Hindustani musalman hoon aur iske siva meri aur koee pehchaan naheen hai” or “vatan mazhab nahin jo badla ja sake”. He was upfront against the fundamentalists on both sides of the divide. He was brutally honest regarding politics of hatred, and felt that the interest of communal elements among both Hindus and Muslims lies in keeping the two communities aloof from each other and to create distrust among them”…sampradaaikta(communalism) ka koee dharm nain hota” or “zahid-e-tang nazar ne mujhe kaafir jaana aur kaafir ye samajhta hai ki musalman hoon main……”

The monologue ends with Rahi’s rare nazm Vaseeyat.

Rahi’s journey begins on 1st September, 1927 in Gangauli, a small village in the Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh and ends with his vaseeyat in which he wills that he be laid to rest in the lap of Ganga, whom he considered his second mother. He passed away on 15 March 1992.

During his illustrious career, Rahi Masoom Raza has written lyrics, dialogues and stories for various movies and television series. His high came with the telecast of TV series 'Mahabharat' that was based on the Hindu epic Mahabharat. Rahi, a Muslim, wrote the screenplay and dialogue of the TV series that went on to become the most watched TV series in India. At one time, its TRP was a staggering 86 %. This was a triumph for Rahi as some Hindu zealots had criticized his inclusion in the team. Terms of address like “Matashri”, “Pitashri”, “Bhratashri”, and “Jijashri” etc. were brought into the popular realm by Rahi.

The Urban Kashmir Project
Sat Jan 18, 10:30 AM
Hobnob Events and Entertainments
What comes to an Urban living's Mind, staying in a city, far away from the lands, never visited, when he hears the word "Kashmir". A very less percent of Hyderabad Population might have gone to Kashmir and seen or known it by themselves and if visited, even then wouldn't have known any ground realities. All we know, interpret is what we see, hear or read through media.

There is a unique thinking each one is having about Kashmir. Some see it as the Paradise, some say it was. For some, it maybe seen as a state that seen a load of bloodshed while some will see it as oppressed one.

The Urban Kashmir Project tries to capture a webbed compilation of your mind to create a collective Urban picture of Kashmir as we see. At the end, we would want to see how Hyderabad sees Kashmir it as of today. A mixture of realities

A Discussion on Death penalty
Sat Jan 18, 5:30 PM
Dialogue towards an alternative
CAN RIGOROUS PUNISHMENTS REDUCE CRIME?

A discussion in context with the recent encounter and death penalty to rape convicts.

Revenge begets revenge, anger leads to anger, hate leads to more hate and blood lust has no end. People are seen believing and demanding capital punishment as the solution for henious crimes including cases of Nirbhaya and Disha.

Retributive justice punishment makes the offender pay his debt for the sin committed whereas reformative justice is about forgiveness, healing and reintegration of offender. Criminal law has moved from retributive to reformative as historically we have understood former theory only looks at the crime and the fitting punishment, on the other hand latter theory delves into various aspects of crime like the social environment, pyschogical, therapeutic rehabilitation, etc with understanding that punishment should benefit the society as a whole and produce more good to society than the harm of the crime.

It's very painful and disturbing to witness the most henious crimes occuring around us especially sexual offences against women. The way how these crimes are dealt with is more important as we have to check how helpful is the present system in curbing the crime and preventing it in future.

In the context of growing demand for killing of offenders we invite you to participate in a 'dialogue' on whether 'Rigorous punishments reduce crime' at Lamakaan on 18th January at 6pm.

Secularism A Curse Today
Sun Jan 19, 4:30 PM
Lamakaan An Open Cultural Space
We have just accepted secularism as a constitutionally declared value but have not asked ourselves what it means to be secular as a society. We have just gone on mouthing slogans about secularism for decades. But we haven’t yet started discussing what happens when a society has to be secularized.

When communal crisis arises, people open their mouths and scream and shout and say this is not what they want from Indian society. But we don’t have enough people discussing what it really means to be a secular society.

Eventually secularism has become a curse word today. Fascists refer to it as sickular and people claiming themselves as secular are called anti nationals too. In order to discuss the real meaning of secularism and the way it is being distorted, In Defense of Reason and Lamakaan prog council is organising a discussion on 19th January 2020. All are welcome !!

EK DURACHARI RAJA
Sun Jan 19, 7:30 PM
Shudrka Hyderabad
The play, EK DURACHARO RAJA has drawn from Camus' “Caligula” the concept of deification of emperors which was common to the pagan world, the Greek and Macedonian kings. Raja (the king) discovers on the death of his sister and lover, Apurupa, that people die and they are not happy. From this point on, obsessed by his search for the absolute, poisoned with contempt and horror, he tries to exercise, through murders and systematic perversion of all values. He rejects friendship, love, simple human solidarity, and the concepts of good and evil. He takes literally all those around him like Taruni, his poet-friend, and forces them to see things logically, and levels everything around him through the force of his rejection. But if his truth involves revolting against destiny, his mistake is to deny humanity One cannot destroy everything without destroying one's self. This is why Raja depopulates the world around him and, faithful to his own logic, decides to strangle Kamini, his mistress, uttering his gospel of hate at everything around him. This play is the story of a superior suicide, as described by Camus. It is the most human of stories and the most tragic of errors. Faithless to humanity out of faith in himself, he accepts to die for having understood that no one can save himself by himself, and that one cannot be free while opposing humanity. The play remains universally relevant. It represents the face of contemporary despotism, not only in terms of the whimsical madness of rulers, but also in terms of how people react to such rule with a glimmer of hope for the future.

Badlav is an original Hindi play written and directed by Amaan Ahmad. Badlav revolves around Gayatri, Kalpana, Radha, and Bindya. Gayatri wants change but her hypocrisy surfaces all the time. Meanwhile, Kalpana, a carefree girl always brings nihilistic values of life. Radha is air-headed and her naivety mixes with intuition and she is lost in her absurd thoughts most of the time. The play takes various twists and turns and touches the element of the Theatre of Absurdity. This psychological and absurd play has multiple rises and falls.

So come join us for a talk and learn about the history of Golconda, which is important to understand the core culture of our city. The talk will be moderated by Yunus Y. Lasania, Serish's former colleague and fellow journalist.

Synopsis : “Insecurity, complex, pollution, money, cell phones, drugs, orkut, facebook, relationships, manners, ethics, love, parents, pressure, sex, freedom, capitalism, education , dependance, awareness, guilt, communication, happiness, confusion...

Why do I do the things, which I do? I think rubbish. I feel rubbish... Who am I? I am not a hardcore rightist, nor a leftist. Not even a orthodox brahmin nor a suppressed dalit. Not a gay nor a part of the minority, not a lefty, or mentally ill.. Who the hell am I? Just a oversensitive guy.. confused.. trapped! Where do I go.. ? What do I do? Will drugs help? Or should turn a blind eye? That wont help, I have tried.. I have tried everything.. Everybody has tried everything..” Straight out of the minds of 21 year olds. The story of a youngster who finally goes to a reality show which is there to create an extremist, terrorist young force..

Is it fundamentalist? Religious? Regional? Certainly not! Exactly what happened with the young parents, involved in liberal, leftist, socialist movements in and after the 1975 Emergency? What happened with the concept of a free, secular, liberal and ideal nation worth to give a birth to a child?? What happened with the values and ethics which they expected from their previous generation of freedom fighters?

What exactly did happen in the last 21 years...

Please help schedule this for this Saturday: 18th January 2020. Write Club Hyderabad helps you pen thoughts, spill your mind and finally make an appointment with the writer in your head. We conduct free, weekly events that foster writing. Our Meetups aim at helping writers reach their goals in a supportive, collaborative, social setting. Writing doesn't have to be all by oneself. We welcome anyone who writes, regardless of genre, language or age. We have members writing novels, short stories, poetry, screenplays, essays, school reports and more. What we do, basically: One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring forth a theme and writing exercises. We all then write to the host’s prompts and guidelines for about an hour. Once we're done writing, we read out our write-ups (optional). We also exchange feedback and constructively critique each other's works. Entry is free, anyone with an interest in writing can walk in. Bring your writing devices and we’re all set!
