The wisest fool on earth

Written by R Raj Rao | Enacted by Feroze

Unemployed.

Of course, angst-ridden.

But, sarcastic. And gay!

Just imagine he gets locked up inside the luxurious bathroom of his
lover. And then flushes down a humorous tale from him in his
confinement in the loo. But, what has he got to share with us? locked
inside the bathroom and he still has some scrap of the feeling of
being wanted. Whether his belief stays or withers away to repeat
history is the twist that's kept for the last. But who put him in the
loo and what hopes does he have in store (of getting out)?

Come witness a tale of failure, frustration, freedom and fulfillment
with humor all through.

Le Mashale...
Sat Nov 16, 7:30 PM
Ojas SV
'Le Mashale…" is the soliloquy in which Irom Sharmila narrates the anguish and aspiration of Manipur through its fables, dances and major incidences which transformed her life. The play talks about brutality unleashed on known and unknown Manoramas in the valley and the protest by determined women who do not mind their nudity over their struggle for justice. The play puts forth many questions raised by torch bearing women from the valley.

Le Mashale…
Manipur: a heavenly land belonging to various ethnic communities; a land with rich culture and history and also a land of unrest; a land under the brutal control of the Indian military forces; a land which struggles for its own identity and democratic right to self determination. Manipur- a land adorned by strong women who bear torch…

Irom Sharmila Chanu- a daughter of this land- is one such woman. A poet and activist who by her dedication and self realization has become a living legend. This is her 10th year of hunger strike against exploitation of her and people by not just Indian army violence but also by mainland centric Indian politics. A physically frail but very strong in her dedication she has become an inspiration for the valley and non violent struggles all over. Her body is her weapon – and this realization has made her a milestone. As eminent writer Mahashweta Devi expresses- "the 21st century should be known by the dedication and struggle of Irom Sharmila."

The Editor Wants to Know-Matinee
Sun Nov 17, 10:30 AM
K Naresh Kumar
On the occasion of National Press Day, this is a matinee play which attempts to understand the changing requirements of the readers and stakeholders and what constitutes public interest in today's times.

This play highlights the changing definition of news and reporting in today's mass media industry where fluff is increasingly replacing hard news focusing on socio-political and socio-economic realities. The unfolding of events is seen through the eyes of a conscientious editor, who is firm in his belief that the media has to be on a mission of serving public interest which is at variance with his owner/proprietor. The one-hour play, split into four scenes examines the current scenario and attempts a critical look at the state of affairs in the country today.

The Editor Wants to Know
Thu Nov 21, 7:30 PM
Jann Sanchar Group
A close look at the prevailing scenario in Indian Journalism.

It is a tough time at National Express newspaper where too many things are happening at the same time. In existence for over 50 years, it is now facing a decline in advertisement revenue and stiff competition in the city of its origin with the arrival of new dailies. Moreover, the editorial staff is disillusioned and confused with the imminent change of guard. All these factors are worrying Neelakantan, the daily’s long-standing editor-in-chief whose professional integrity and political neutrality are well known.

Into this chaotic scene, enters Riya Khemka, the foreign-returned daughter of the proprietor. Khemka is a hands-on, no-nonsense woman who believes decisions have to be taken even if traditions need to be overthrown. A known practitioner of ‘disruptive management’, she believes it is alright to set the cat among the pigeons on a regular basis if it forces the birds to fly faster and save themselves!

In sharp contrast is Neelakantan, who believes in the old school of thought and feels change for the sake of it is not desirable.

Riya wants a total revamp of news and views and all other things that have characterized the newspaper all these years. She feels that the young and impatient Gen Now wants ‘lighter, easier’ stories alongside the serious, hard stuff that goes into the newspaper.

As expected, a battle begins in right earnest between the editor and the owner.

Spread over the next four scenes, we present the drama that unfolds as the editor and his loyal group of supporters comes face to face with the trends and expectations that characterize Indian print media and its readership.

A Place at the Table - Docu film
Sat Nov 23, 6:30 PM
Point of View Film
A PLACE AT THE TABLE (dir. Kristi Jacobson, Lori Silverbush) is a brilliant documentary that confronts America's perennial inability to deal with the widespread problem of hunger in our nation. Ronald Reagan slashed federal programs that were beginning to solve the issue by the late 1970's, however he cynically felt that the matter would best be solved by relying on good old fashioned Christian charity. And it didn't work then, and it doesn't work now. Millions of Americans struggle daily with 'food insecurity' (you don't know where your next meal is coming from), and it seems that our leaders are convinced that the poor have it far too easy, and are just too dependent on the largess of the American tax payer. However, the film does expose the pertinent fact that America's richest food corporations were able to continue to enjoy 100% of their lavish government subsidy, yet the food stamp budget was severely cut to pay for a program to end childhood hunger.

Film screening is followed by discussion on the current state of affairs in our own food policy and whats cooking in India.

Film Screening "Ram Ke Naam"
Wed Nov 27, 4:00 PM
S.Q.Masood & Namrata Jaiswal
In the Name Of God
Ram Ke Naam
(1991, Colour, 75 minutes)

(A film by Anand Patwardhan)

Since gaining independence in 1947, India has been a secular state. But now, as religious fundamentalism grips much of India's population, the greatest danger to the nation's extremely strained social fabric may come not from Sikh or Muslim separatists, but from Hindu fundamentalists who are appealing to the 83% Hindu majority to redefine India as a Hindu nation.

IN THE NAME OF GOD focuses on the campaign waged by the militant Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to destroy a 16th century mosque in Ayodhya said to have been built by Babar, the first Mughal Emperor of India. The VHP claim the mosque was built at the birthsite of the Hindu god Ram after Babar razed an existing Ram temple. They are determined to build a new temple to Ram on the same site. This controversial issue, which successive governments have refused to resolve, has led to religious riots which have cost thousands their lives, culminating in the mosque's destruction by the Hindus in December of 1992. The resulting religious violence immediately spread throughout India and Pakistan leaving more than 5,000 dead, and causing thousands of Indian Muslims to flee their homes.

Filmed prior to the mosque's demolition, IN THE NAME OF GOD examines the motivations which would ultimately lead to the drastic actions of the Hindu militants, as well as the efforts of secular Indians - many of whom are Hindus - to combat the religious intolerance and hatred that has seized India in the name of God.

Awards:

Filmfare Award, Best Documentary, India, 1992
National Award, Best Investigative Doc. India, 1992
Ecumenical Prize, Nyon, Switzerland, 1993
Documentary Prize, Freibourg, Switzerland, 1993
Citizen's Prize, Yamagata, Japan, 1993

Reviews:

"The screen is electric with religious fervor, masses of people swarming through the streets, gathering in rallies, or violently rioting...

This is investigative cinema verité documentary at its dynamic best."
Kay Armatage, Toronto Film Festival

"A deceptively informal look at one lethal instance of India's move towards fundamentalist politics. For those who need to translate westward, it provides a possible clairvoyant example of the force of religious-political belief." Cameron Bailey

"An acutely informative, restrainedly courageous, and grimly prophetic film."- Hank Heifetz, author, ORIGIN OF THE YOUNG GOD

"Hard-hitting, provocative, revealing look at secularism in India under siege from militants on both sides. Patwardhan explores this tragedy in this lucid, courageous film that allows supporters of both sides to have their say... A documentary well worth seeking out."
Variety

"Anand Patwardhan's In the Name of God (Ram Ke Naam) is an important and telling comment on the rath yatra, on the political cynicism that went into the making of that event, and the communal fallout it produced."

NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT
Thu Nov 28, 7:00 PM
DOCUMENTARY CIRCLE OF HYDERABAD
Dir : Patricio Guzman

Chile's high Atacama Desert is one of those rare places where the earth seems truly to touch the sky. Located 10,000 feet above sea level, the desert's remoteness and the extraordinary fact that it is the driest place on earth, with zero percent humidity, give it some of the clearest skies on the planet. Astronomers come from all over the globe to peer through the world's biggest telescopes to the very edge of time and space, hoping to discover the secrets of the cosmos. But the Atacama holds other secrets underfoot. Its dry soil has preserved layers of human remains, from pre-Columbian mummies to the bones of 19th-century explorers to the corpses of political prisoners "disappeared" by the Chilean army under General Augusto Pinochet after the military coup of September 1973.

In this otherworldly place, earthly and celestial quests meld: Archaeologists dig for ancient civilizations, women search for their loved ones and astronomers scan the skies for new galaxies.

Nostalgia for the Light is a meditation on memory, history and eternity

XL's Stand-up Comedy Evening
Sun Dec 1, 5:00 PM
Swetha Kotichintala; Prateik Asrani
One hour of encounter with the realities of everyday life with apna Hyderabadis, in an angle which'll comfort that aneurysm in your head 😛
Followed by open mic - where you could vent out 'bout anything, right from your khadoos boss, to your partner, to the mandi wala to world politics! Welcome to the lighter side of the world... Ommmm Shannnnti

Prateik Asrani - Bit by a bollywood bug at a very early age, the colorful venom of exaggeration filled his blood stream in no time and deluded him to believe in fairy tales..., but oops! the fairie(s) spanked his butt with their magic wand(s) and landed him in the reality of irony, making him the lovechild of sarcasm and frivolousness.. witty, tongue-in-cheek, quick, smart are the synonyms of his existence thereafter 😛

Alick Bailey - Just an ordinary guy like you and me and finds life funny at every corner. Loves to laugh at himself and others for the heck of it ^_^

Siddhy Varma - For a masters degree student with no memory/ use of it or for it, respectively, stand-up promises the catharsis to his biotech guilt. Hence he solemnly pledges to be sweaty, shaky and outrageously funny U_U (we'll see..) Bet your bottom rupee

Sishir - The name is Challa, Sishir Challa. And.. Surprise! Moth**f***ers! You just lost 3 secs of your life! Bahahaha.. *inhales some 'mysterious' smoke*.................. Surprise! Moth**f***ers! You just lost 3 secs of your life! Mahahaha - wait, didn't I just do that already? Shit -_- (somebody get me some water)......

Reeja Karrai - A former visual effects artist and creator of all things magical. She gave up her powers to continue living like a mere mortal and DANCE (sometimes for the monies, but not the way you are thinking, you evil beings!) Sometimes though, being mortal can be taxing and it drives her crazy to rant away and people find that funny. Join her to vent out your frustos! O:-)

Edwin Gates - 26 yrs ago a disturbing event unveiled a form of stupidity like no other. A child was born who brought in an age of misplaced logic, which will make sense to you after the enlightenment enters your soul! So... breathe in.... breathe out.. and be ready... B)

THE WORDS OR DEATH : Docu film
Sun Dec 1, 7:00 PM
DOCUMENTARY CIRCLE OF HYDERABAD
The Word or Death is an investigation into the dangerous links between politics and religion, between religions and sciences. How can the same words from the Bible or the Koran incite hatred, murder and sacrifice and also light the way to wisdom and life?

At the dawn of the 21st century, we are struck by the explosive force of mix between Bibical or Koranic verses, political messages and murderous acts that enflame wars “in the name of God”. But the words can also awaken, they can illuminate the spirit and weave bonds over frontiers.

A film on Legendary Singer Jikki
Wed Dec 4, 7:00 PM
Saichand T
Krishnaveni, popularly known as Jikki, began her career as a child artist in 1943 and played a minor role in a Telugu movie named Panthulamma. She was slowly being noted for her musical prowess and the lilting mellifluous voice although she did not go through any orthodox classical training in music. Soon a chance came her way to sing for the successful Tamil film 'Gnanasoundari' in 1948 for which music was composed by S. V. Venkatraman. The song was a super hit. This was the turning point in her life and changed the child actress Krishnaveni into a regular playback singer,Jikki, with chances pouring from not only for Tamil and Telugu films, but also for Kannada and Malayalam films - soon her staking a claim as No.1 female singer of South India. Then Gemini's S. S. Vasan introduced her to the Hindi film world by getting her to sing for his production 'Mr.Sampat" in 1952. She sang Sinhalese songs as well at that stage since the Sinhalese films were produced in Madras during those years.
She together with P. Leela reigned supreme in the South Indian film world in the early part of the 50s. Though they were in competition, they were fond of each other and behaved like two sisters and sang many songs together.

T Saichand made a moving tribute to her in this documentary and being screened to commemorate 100 years of Cinema.
