Remembering Robert Altman
Wed Feb 28, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
Robert Bernard Altman - February 20, 1925 – November 20, 2006) was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was a five-time nominee of the Academy Award for Best Director and is considered an enduring figure from the New Hollywood era. His most famous directorial achievements include MAS*H (1970), McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), The Long Goodbye (1973), Nashville (1975), 3 Women (1977), The Player (1992), Short Cuts (1993), and Gosford Park (2001).

Altman's style of filmmaking covered many genres, but usually with a "subversive" or "anti-Hollywood" twist which typically relied on satire and humor to express his personal views. Actors especially enjoyed working under his direction because he encouraged them to improvise. He preferred large ensemble casts for his films, and developed a multitrack recording technique which produced overlapping dialogue from multiple actors. This produced a more natural, more dynamic, and more complex experience for the viewer. He also used highly mobile camera work and zoom lenses to enhance the activity taking place on the screen. Critic Pauline Kael, writing about his directing style, said that Altman could "make film fireworks out of next to nothing.

The story's setting was moved from the 1940s to 1970s Hollywood. The Long Goodbye has been called "a study of a moral and decent man cast adrift in a selfish, self-obsessed society where lives can be thrown away without a backward glance.

Amudhan R.P.
Born and raised in a rural and small-town background, Amudhan developed his liking for cinema by watching popular Tamil films with his mother, Pushpam, a farmer, while sitting on the sand-bed in thatched and temporary cinema halls called Touring Talkies.
Cinema has always been a collective activity/place for Amudhan, in which people from different backgrounds come together and imagine multiple worlds in a given short time.
After completing his Post Graduation in Development Communication from Madurai Kamraj University and a two-year stint at the Centre for Development of Instructional Technology (CENDIT), New Delhi, Amudhan set up MARUPAKKAM (The Other Side, in Tamil), a media action group in Madurai with his like-minded friends to produce, screen and disseminate documentary films, in 1996.

Since then, Amudhan has made around 20 films on various social, political, and economic themes. He also founded the Madurai International Documentary and Short Film Festival and the Chennai International Documentary and Short Film Festival and has conducted them for over 23 years and 10 years, respectively. He also curates various thematic film festivals across India. On various occasions, he has been part of many film festivals in India as a Selection Committee and a Final Jury member.
He has conducted Documentary Workshops at prestigious educational institutions such as the National Institute of Design (Ahmedabad), Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi), Central University of Hyderabad, LV Prasad Film Academy (Chennai), St Joseph’s College (Bengaluru), Loyola College (Chennai), Chetana Film Institute (Thrissur) and Sacred Heart College (Kochi). Amudhan has been pursuing Mobile Phone Filmmaking since the COVID-19-induced lockdown, experimenting with the medium while expressing human anxieties and reaching out to nature.

Cybernetic Census and The Politics of Numbers in Digital India - A Talk by Srinivas Kodali

Srinivas Kodali takes us through how modern-day digital governance treats humans as numbers with the mathematical science of cybernetics, which is used to reshape the republic.

The Census has been a project of control for colonial actors in India, these colonial practices were modified to help achieve India's development goals under PC Mahalnobis. Mahalnobis, as the architect of the modern census in India, evolved practices that have been exported from India to the rest of the world. Present-day census applications in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been heavily relying on cybernetics to create 360-degree profiles of citizens. This form of real-time cybernetic census will be the future in Digital India. The talk will look into the discontents of numbers and how modern-day digital governance treats humans as numbers with the mathematical science of cybernetics, which is being used to reshape the republic. It will touch on Digital Governance, Representation, Surveillance, Control, and Freedoms in Digital Societies.

DÉJÀ VU a documentary by Bedabrata Pain

2024 began with farmers all over Europe demonstratively raising their voices in protest, while farmers in India re-launch a protest march to Delhi alongside other demonstrations, with MSP at the forefront of their demands.

Against the backdrop of the global rise in farmers’ movement comes the documentary “Déjà vu”. The documentary began in 2021. Barely two months since the launch of the farm laws in India to promote market reforms. In the middle of Covid and a frigid American winter, four Indians were on a ten-thousand-kilometer drive through the farming heartland of America. Because, as it turns out that four decades ago, similar market reforms were ushered in in America. A more classic case of “back to the future” perhaps could not be found.
How did the reforms turn out? Who benefitted? Who lost out? Is it the farmers, the consumers, or the corporates? What impact did loss of MSP or ushering in of contract farming have on farmers?
Through personal experiences and human stories of small farmers in America, Deja Vu is chronicle of a four decade long history of a much-trumpeted elixir – and a cautionary tale for India.
Déjà Vu is the confluence where past meets the future.

DIRECTOR: Bedabrata Pain
One of the inventors of CMOS digital camera technology that enabled cell-phones to movie cameras - Bedabrata Pain was an award-winning senior research scientist at NASA and Caltech. He holds over 90 patents and is an inductee to the US Space Technology Hall of Fame. With his debut film Chittagong (2012), he won the Golden Lotus in the Indian National Awards as well as many international awards. Earlier, he was the executive producer of internationally acclaimed Amu (2005) and the documentary called Lifting the Veil (1997). He is currently working on several feature films and web-series in India and in Hollywood.

Cocoon - German Movie Night
Tue Mar 19, 7:00 PM
Goethe - Zentrum Hyderabad & Lamakaan
In the hot summer of Berlin-Kreuzberg, Nora, played by Lena Urzendowsky, hangs out with her older sister Jule (Lena Klenke) at places like the underground station, public pools, rooftops, and parties. She's like a butterfly in a cocoon, not quite a kid anymore but not fully grown yet – just like the ones she keeps in a box. Her journey takes a turn when she gets her period for the first time during gym class, she panics and runs to the girls' restroom. There, she meets Romy, who helps her clean her jeans and gives her a joint to ease her discomfort. Romy, played by Jella Haase also makes Nora realize something new about herself: she likes girls more than boys she says to her hardened sex education teacher with cautiously chosen words. The movie, directed by Leonie Krippendorff, tells a sweet, tenderly romantic coming-of-age and coming-out story with real-life scenes and simple language. In the end, Nora finds her wings and flies like a butterfly.

Her Name Was Sita
Thu Mar 21, 7:30 PM
Dhannya V Sasi , University of Edinburgh
Who is a good woman? A young Nepali woman asks this question to herself, school children, university students, sociologists, anthropologists, and medical doctors. Her exploration leads her to understand that in some situations, female suicide is believed to be a response to socially accepted oppression and abuse, which women are subjected to in their families and communities. She discovers that, in low and middle-income countries particularly, suicide is not always a mental health problem. It is a layered issue that can overlap between mental distress caused by stressful situations, conflict, grief, and mental health problems.
In Nepal, suicide is the single leading cause of death among women of reproductive age. It is a serious but neglected public health problem. Research shows that adolescents, youths, and females are the most vulnerable population to die by suicide.
Her Name Was Sita is dedicated to a 16-year-old girl who died trying to prove she was worthy of love.

*WARNING: This event will discuss suicide and self-harm that some people may find upsetting. It is not suitable for younger audiences

Join us for a screening of Her Name Was Sita, a short documentary exploring the concept of a virtuous woman and how shame and honor can lead to self-harm and suicide in South Asia. A panel discussion with public health researchers will follow the screening.
