Predictability of Politics in US
Wed Feb 8, 5:00 PM

Predictability of Politics & Growth In The US.

- A Talk by Dr. Abusaleh Shariff,Chief Scholar at the US-India Policy Institute, Washington D.C, USA & The Maulana Azad Professor & Maulana Azad University, Hyderabad.

Mr. Trump Triumphs; against all odds and against own expectation; a spectacular win indeed! With traces of racial undertones and hordes rural white-supremacists voting in vengeance to eight years of the so called ‘black rule’ of America. Mrs. Clinton is a victim of anti-incumbency -third straight Democratic rule in Washington D.C. The vote has been a close, although Mrs. Clinton has counted more of the poplar votes, the US electoral process has a unique arithmetic specific to each state which gave the coveted the winning total of 270 electoral votes to Mr. Trump. Over all Mr. Trump shifted the electorate to political right and towards the right side of American map. In real political terms this nation is split in the middle the Rural (dominantly Republican) versus the Urban (dominantly Democrat) divide. The urban concentration across the US are characteristically unique due to pluralistic, multi-ethnic and multicultural concentrations in city centers and working spaces.
There are racial undertones of white supremacy; will this fade away or consolidate during Mr. Trumps presidency is yet to be seen.

Defamation: Threat To Democracy
Fri Feb 10, 5:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
In India, defamation laws, especially the criminal defamation laws, have been more abused than used. It is a surprise that these laws, made more than 150 years ago, still exist in a free world. It is even more surprising that a nation burdened with serious issues in justice delivery even entertains such cases when the priority should be to the contrary.

Defamation laws are used to threaten, bully and silence free speech and promote censorship so as to enable the criminal activities of a few. Very few cases have been filed with an intent to pursue truth and come clean. Anyone, with even the most remote connections, can seek out any of the thousands of lower courts in the country to mount an enormous challenge against free media. This possibility is dangerous to our democracy.

UDAAN Performing Arts, Hyderabad Presents A Hindi Monologue

'Shakkar Ke Paanch Dane'

About The Play - Rajkumar has been requested to write a poem for a compilation to be published. If you knew Rajkumar you’d realize the absurdity of the request.
In an hour long monologue, Rajkumar tells us about his unremarkable life in his nondescript village and the five grains of sugar – the five people – who have stood out in this drab life for reasons stranger than fiction. The filmy mother; her poet brother Pundaleek; Raghu, the school hero; old man Radhey; and the anonymous ‘Truckwala dost’ . As Rajkumar talks, the five grains become a single life-game that he has been unknowingly playing for years…and Rajkumar realizes that everyone has a story inside them.

Taking democracy for a ride
Sat Feb 18, 2:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
Recent strike by driver-cum-owners of Uber and Ola taxi hailing app companies throws up many questions. Who are the investors of these startup companies which don’t own even a single car? Why are the foreign private equity (PE) investors pumping millions of dollars in India in these two start-ups while they are yet to make profits? Why are these two taxi companies presently making losses? What is the game-plan of these apps?

It is Indians who hire the taxis and Indians’ money is paid for the ride; it is Indians who own and drive the taxis and bear the expenses related to repairs and maintenance; it is Indian cities that are bearing the pollution and traffic jams caused by the taxis of these companies; But these foreign-funded companies are becoming monopolies at the expense of Indian peoples' interests.

Both state and central governments are paving red carpet to them. Democratic values like sovereignty and equality are at stake. The speaker will explain how democracy is taken for a ride by these companies.

About the speaker:
P. Maharshi is a researcher in Economy and is an author. In the past he worked as a consultant in the USA and Europe.

Waiting for Godot has always been a great enthusiasm for interpreters. It is possibly one of the most exemplary absurdist theatre texts written thus far. Samuel Beckett wrote this play after the Second World War and through the play you can see references to those years in his writing. The confusion and meaninglessness of the play is very contemporaneous to our experiences in the world as we see it today as well. There are many ways in which Beckett’s writings have been interpreted. Our experiment takes us through Waiting for Godot in strange ways.

We will be performing our contextual interpretation of Waiting for Godot .

Positively Shameless
Fri Feb 24, 8:00 PM
Maitri Gopalakrishnan
Positively Shameless is a devised theatre performance about surviving childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and working through the residues as an adult. The five women who comprise the performing ensemble chose to engage with issues around CSA through theatre to extend their own personal journeys as well as to create performance that is meaningful to a larger audience. The piece has been collaboratively created by the performers and directors.

While the piece explores a difficult issue, it also celebrates the sense of sisterhood and spirit of the players. It packs in layers of subtext and stays far away from taking on a preachy voice. We don't claim to have it all figured out but are willing to share our journey.

This performance runs for 60 minutes without intermission and is followed by a 30 min audience interaction.

Why Indian Genius? Any people who dare to question beliefs are precious, regardless of where they’re from because flawed or false beliefs cause immeasurable useless misery. In every culture there exists its highest contribution to humanity and social diseases in the form of poisonous beliefs. It is a rare person who can apply an antidote to poisonous beliefs in the face of cultural pressures. I introduce here two examples of Indian genius, Kabir and B.R. Ambedkar.

Jagdamba Prasad(JP), the thrice-married collector of Tikamganj Dist. has received a letter from his brother-in-law stating that an inspector has to arrive secretly in his district to enquire about his corrupt practices and his associates. At the same time, he apprehends that the inspector might have arrived already in the town in disguise. The story revolves around a young man 'Kewal who is mistaken as the inspector by JP and his associates. The hilarious take on corruption and how easily one can be fooled by an imposter is what makes this act interesting. this pun-intended satirical comedy is a roller coaster ride to the much-needed laughter break. In the run up to the women's day, and the host of festivals and celebrations planned in the month of march - We are screening "Thelma & Louise (1991)"

Directed by Ridley Scott, "Thelma and Louise" made a huge splash when it was released and has since become a part of the pop culture lexicon. In it, a mistreated housewife and harried waitress stumble into an out-of-control - but totally liberating - crime spree. As bold and relevant as ever, it remains a vastly entertaining must-see.

Whilst on a short weekend getaway, Louise shoots a man who had tried to rape Thelma. Due to the incriminating circumstances, they make a run for it but are soon followed closely by the authorities including a local policeman who is sympathetic to their plight. The federal authorities, however, have less compassion and thus a cross country chase ensues for the two fugitives. Marxist Study Circle - Session 1
Sat Mar 4, 5:00 PM
Parag Verma and Shishir Gupta
We’re living in an age of the terminal crisis of capitalism. The toiling masses all over the world are the worst victims of this crisis. The increasing severity of poverty, hunger, malnutrition in the third world countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America and the growing economic disparity and unemployment all over the world bear ample testimony to this tragic reality. For all its lofty promises and technological advancements, Capitalism has brought humanity to such an abyss that the very survival of life on this planet is now at stake. Any sensitive individual cannot but be disturbed by such a tragic state of affairs. But the question which confronts all of us is what is to be done?

We believe that only logical solution to the umpteen socio-economic and ecological problems is the revolutionary overthrow of capitalism and its replacement by socialism which would be based upon fulfilling the needs of people and not upon the mindless greed for a few. Make no mistake, we don’t use the word revolution merely as an emotional outburst. We are mindful of the fact that there cannot be a revolution without a scientific theory of revolution. And there’s a name to that science of revolution — Marxism! Despite all attempts to bury it deep down in the earth, the spectre of Marxism continues to haunt the rulers all over the world and more so in the current age of crisis.

It is with the aim of understanding this science of revolution that ‘In Defense of Reason’, a discussion forum, is organizing a Marxist study circle on 4th and 5th of March, 2017 (5:00 PM to 8:00 PM) at Lamakaan, Hyderabad. The first two sessions will cover the general introduction of Marxist philosophy – Dialectical & Historical Materialism and Marxist Epistemology (theory of knowledge). Further sessions will be organized to cover the other aspects of Marxism.

First two sessions will be led by Anand Singh, a political activist who regularly writes for workers’ monthly newspaper ‘Mazdoor Bigul’.

Mountain Communities
Sun Mar 5, 11:30 AM
Lamakaan Programming Team
As part of the Women's Day celebration, Lamakaan brings to you a talk by Manjari Mehta.

Mountain communities in transition: a personal journey of images of change

Manjari Mehta is a social anthropologist whose work focuses mainly on social and gender issues in the Himalaya. She has a Ph.D. from Boston University, taught at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology in the United States for many years, and more recently worked as a Gender Specialist at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development in Kathmandu, Nepal. She has extensive experience in non-formal teaching, field-based research and project evaluation. Her present research interests focus on communities in the low and middle hills of Uttarakhand that are increasingly peri-urban in nature. A work in progress, When the Koel Sings: A Memoir of Fieldwork, depicts these shifts from what was once a largely rural existence to increasingly urban-based lifestyles and aspirations. She makes her home in Dehra Dun; when she is not tending an unruly garden and an even unrulier pack of five dogs she walks in the mountains of Nepal and Uttarakhand.

Waiting for Godot
Thu Feb 23, 7:30 PM
Fotons
Waiting for Godot has always been a great enthusiasm for interpreters. It is possibly one of the most exemplary absurdist theatre texts written thus far. Samuel Beckett wrote this play after the Second World War and through the play you can see references to those years in his writing. The confusion and meaninglessness of the play is very contemporaneous to our experiences in the world as we see it today as well. There are many ways in which Beckett’s writings have been interpreted. Our experiment takes us through Waiting for Godot in strange ways.

We will be performing our contextual interpretation of Waiting for Godot .

Duration:70mins.

Players: Kavya Bose, Sathyam AP, Sharanya Iyer, Shilpa Waghmare, Vijji Chari

Why Indian Genius? Any people who dare to question beliefs are precious, regardless of where they’re from because flawed or false beliefs cause immeasurable useless misery. In every culture there exists its highest contribution to humanity and social diseases in the form of poisonous beliefs. It is a rare person who can apply an antidote to poisonous beliefs in the face of cultural pressures. I introduce here two examples of Indian genius, Kabir and B.R. Ambedkar.
