In the Name Of God
Ram Ke Naam
(1991, Colour, 75 minutes)

(A film by Anand Patwardhan)

Since gaining independence in 1947, India has been a secular state. But now, as religious fundamentalism grips much of India's population, the greatest danger to the nation's extremely strained social fabric may come not from Sikh or Muslim separatists, but from Hindu fundamentalists who are appealing to the 83% Hindu majority to redefine India as a Hindu nation.

IN THE NAME OF GOD focuses on the campaign waged by the militant Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to destroy a 16th century mosque in Ayodhya said to have been built by Babar, the first Mughal Emperor of India. The VHP claim the mosque was built at the birthsite of the Hindu god Ram after Babar razed an existing Ram temple. They are determined to build a new temple to Ram on the same site. This controversial issue, which successive governments have refused to resolve, has led to religious riots which have cost thousands their lives, culminating in the mosque's destruction by the Hindus in December of 1992. The resulting religious violence immediately spread throughout India and Pakistan leaving more than 5,000 dead, and causing thousands of Indian Muslims to flee their homes.

Filmed prior to the mosque's demolition, IN THE NAME OF GOD examines the motivations which would ultimately lead to the drastic actions of the Hindu militants, as well as the efforts of secular Indians - many of whom are Hindus - to combat the religious intolerance and hatred that has seized India in the name of God.

Awards:

Filmfare Award, Best Documentary, India, 1992
National Award, Best Investigative Doc. India, 1992
Ecumenical Prize, Nyon, Switzerland, 1993
Documentary Prize, Freibourg, Switzerland, 1993
Citizen's Prize, Yamagata, Japan, 1993

Reviews:

"The screen is electric with religious fervor, masses of people swarming through the streets, gathering in rallies, or violently rioting...

This is investigative cinema verité documentary at its dynamic best."
Kay Armatage, Toronto Film Festival

"A deceptively informal look at one lethal instance of India's move towards fundamentalist politics. For those who need to translate westward, it provides a possible clairvoyant example of the force of religious-political belief." Cameron Bailey

"An acutely informative, restrainedly courageous, and grimly prophetic film."- Hank Heifetz, author, ORIGIN OF THE YOUNG GOD

"Hard-hitting, provocative, revealing look at secularism in India under siege from militants on both sides. Patwardhan explores this tragedy in this lucid, courageous film that allows supporters of both sides to have their say... A documentary well worth seeking out."
Variety

"Anand Patwardhan's In the Name of God (Ram Ke Naam) is an important and telling comment on the rath yatra, on the political cynicism that went into the making of that event, and the communal fallout it produced."

NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT
Thu Nov 28, 7:00 PM
DOCUMENTARY CIRCLE OF HYDERABAD
Dir : Patricio Guzman

Chile's high Atacama Desert is one of those rare places where the earth seems truly to touch the sky. Located 10,000 feet above sea level, the desert's remoteness and the extraordinary fact that it is the driest place on earth, with zero percent humidity, give it some of the clearest skies on the planet. Astronomers come from all over the globe to peer through the world's biggest telescopes to the very edge of time and space, hoping to discover the secrets of the cosmos. But the Atacama holds other secrets underfoot. Its dry soil has preserved layers of human remains, from pre-Columbian mummies to the bones of 19th-century explorers to the corpses of political prisoners "disappeared" by the Chilean army under General Augusto Pinochet after the military coup of September 1973.

In this otherworldly place, earthly and celestial quests meld: Archaeologists dig for ancient civilizations, women search for their loved ones and astronomers scan the skies for new galaxies.

Nostalgia for the Light is a meditation on memory, history and eternity

Prateik Asrani - Bit by a bollywood bug at a very early age, the colorful venom of exaggeration filled his blood stream in no time and deluded him to believe in fairy tales..., but oops! the fairie(s) spanked his butt with their magic wand(s) and landed him in the reality of irony, making him the lovechild of sarcasm and frivolousness.. witty, tongue-in-cheek, quick, smart are the synonyms of his existence thereafter 😛

THE WORDS OR DEATH : Docu film
Sun Dec 1, 7:00 PM
DOCUMENTARY CIRCLE OF HYDERABAD
The Word or Death is an investigation into the dangerous links between politics and religion, between religions and sciences. How can the same words from the Bible or the Koran incite hatred, murder and sacrifice and also light the way to wisdom and life?

At the dawn of the 21st century, we are struck by the explosive force of mix between Bibical or Koranic verses, political messages and murderous acts that enflame wars “in the name of God”. But the words can also awaken, they can illuminate the spirit and weave bonds over frontiers.

A film on Legendary Singer Jikki
Wed Dec 4, 7:00 PM
Saichand T
Krishnaveni, popularly known as Jikki, began her career as a child artist in 1943 and played a minor role in a Telugu movie named Panthulamma. She was slowly being noted for her musical prowess and the lilting mellifluous voice although she did not go through any orthodox classical training in music. Soon a chance came her way to sing for the successful Tamil film 'Gnanasoundari' in 1948 for which music was composed by S. V. Venkatraman. The song was a super hit. This was the turning point in her life and changed the child actress Krishnaveni into a regular playback singer,Jikki, with chances pouring from not only for Tamil and Telugu films, but also for Kannada and Malayalam films - soon her staking a claim as No.1 female singer of South India. Then Gemini's S. S. Vasan introduced her to the Hindi film world by getting her to sing for his production 'Mr.Sampat" in 1952. She sang Sinhalese songs as well at that stage since the Sinhalese films were produced in Madras during those years.
She together with P. Leela reigned supreme in the South Indian film world in the early part of the 50s. Though they were in competition, they were fond of each other and behaved like two sisters and sang many songs together.

T Saichand made a moving tribute to her in this documentary and being screened to commemorate 100 years of Cinema.

28th Listening Post – The Bass Groove

The bass player has an extremely important role in jazz, one that is perhaps not appreciated as much as it should. He holds on to the rhythm and the chordal structure that gives the soloists the freedom to improvise. This combination of rhythm and structure also makes bass solos in jazz a unique creative experience in musical expression. In this listening post, we look at some of the great bassists to understand their contribution to the magic of a jazz performance.

Presented by : Subhorup Dasgupta, Jazz-Lover & Writer at http://subhorup.blogspot.in/

Bapu drawing - fun for Kids
Sun Dec 15, 2:00 PM
BNIM
Lamakaan invites children of all ages for a Caricature/Drawing/Painting/sketching/illustration/cartoonist talent show event on the birthday of Bapu - the famous Filmmaker, artist.

Bapu introduced a painting style of simple bright colors. His unique style consisted of economy of strokes, freehand drawing and a lack of background clutter.
His paintings focus on Hindu mythological characters, and he has painted the Hindu epic Ramayana as a pictorial story. His character portrayals, such as Shiva, Bhima, Duryodhana, look distinctly male with wide chests, large jaws and large biceps; while Krishna and Rama are more feminine in build. All his female characters have doe eyes, a waist-hip ratio of 0.7, voluptuous, long hair and a sharp nose. The phrase Bapu Bomma ("Bapu's painting") has become synonymous with a beautiful Telugu girl. Another character called Rendu Jadala Seeta ("Seeta with two plaits") became a synonym for any girl wearing her hair in two plaits.
Bapu has also introduced a new style of cursive writing in Telugu. The font is his own handwriting and reflects the same simplicity as his art.

This event today is open for all and is to encourage children to take up the hobby of painting seriously.

The competition will be followed by screening of a documentary on Bapu made by Saichand Tripuraneni.

Open for all. Entry - Free

Bapu - Great Director, Painter
Sun Dec 15, 4:00 PM
Saichand T
Paying a tribute to Bapu, great Indian film director, music artist, painter, illustrator, cartoonist, and designer. He was awarded the Padma Shri, for his contribution to Indian art and cinema. He has won two National Film Awards, five Andhra Pradesh state Awards.

Bapu's directorial venture saakshi was showcased at Tashkent film festival in 1968. SeetaKalyanam was screened at the BFI London Film Festival and Chicago International Film Festival in 1978. He has also directed Bollywood films like Hum Paanch, Seeta Swayamvar, Anokha Bhakt, Bezubaan, Woh Saat Din, Pyari Behna, Mohobbat, Mera Dharam, Diljala and Prem Pratigya.

Bapu met Mullapudi Venkataramana in 1942 in P.S. High School, Madras. They studied there in standards V and VI and then continued schooling at Kesari High School.Ramana’s first short story 'Amma Maata Vinakapothe' was published in 1945 in 'Bala', a children's magazine published by Radio Annayya (Nyayapathi Raghava Rao),he was 14 then. Bapu illustrated the story. That was the beginning of their career as a writer-producer -illustrator- filmmaker duo”.
Started as an illustrator-story writer team and then turning into a film-director-writer duo, they have contributed immensely to the enrichment of Telugu cultural ethos through literature and cinema. When one mentions Bapu, then one is bound to mention Ramana's name too and vice versa. The most notable achievement in his movie making is his success in capturing the nativity of Telugu people and translating it great on-screen visuals. When ever the renowned duo of Bapu and Ramana come together for a project, viewers expect a spectacular visual of nativity with an equally enthralling storyline.
Their mythological ventures like Sampoorna Ramayanam, Ramanjaneya Yuddham and Seeta Kalyanam have been the milestones of Telugu cinema, while historical films like Thyagayya, Bhakta Kannappa and Sree natha kavisarvabhouma have been hugely successful. Because Our Cause is Just -Film
Tue Dec 17, 6:30 PM
Asmita Resource Centre for Women
The movie would be on Violence Against Women. The movie: 'Because Our Cause is Just is an eye-opening documentary about the struggle of women in countries experiencing the so-called “Arab Spring.” Begun as a civil movement of women and men seeking human rights and justice after decades of dictatorship, the revolutionary wave has not yielded justice for all. Instead, the political openings caused by these revolts have been exploited by Islamist groups who seek to not only exclude women from the political process but to remove them from public life through intimidation, oppressive legislation, and even physical violence. Produced by Women’s Learning Partnership, the film reveals how women in the Middle East-North Africa region are continuing to fight for the right to be part of their countries evolving political systems.

 This is a seventy minute performance.
 It’s a dramatized performance of three short stories as vignettes.
 The author of the stories is Ismat Chughtai, the legendary Urdu writer.
 Each story is narrated by one of the three artistes in a sequence.
 A letter by Manto on his view of Ismat as a woman is read out as a prelude.
 Permission for the performances has been obtained from Ismat Chughtai’s grandson Mr Ashish Sawhny.

Ismat Chughtai, was a veritable tour de force of women's writing in India, a woman who was a feminist by instinct, long before it became fashionable to flash the badge of feminism.

She brought to the fore the modernity inherent in the actions of the poorest of rural Indian women as well as the stagnation in the minds of the so called urban elite.

Ruthlessly honest and deeply perceptive, she presented the truth of society and its women in the same nakedness in which she saw them. She wrote with a rare courage, truth and good humour which endear her to everyone who comes across her writings.
The performance begins with Guftagu (Tete-e-tete), a monologue by Ismat herself where she muses and talks about her early life, family relationships and her writings.
The second story, Saas (Mother-in-law), is about a unique saas-bahu pair and adds a new dimension to this perceived notorious relationship.
The third and the last is Chidi Ki Dukki (The Second Card of Clubs) which speaks volumes about how wit and attitude in a woman can be more attractive than the supposed good looks.

Sec.377-Against order of nature?
Sat Dec 21, 4:00 PM
Sri Krupa
On 11 December 2013, the Supreme Court of India ruled homosexuality to be a criminal offence setting aside the 2009 judgement given by the Delhi High Court.

This is an interactive open discussion on understanding Chapter XVI, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code dating back to 1861, introduced during the British rule of India, that criminalises sexual activities "against the order of nature", including homosexual acts.
The section was earlier declared unconstitutional with respect to sex between consenting adults by the High Court of Delhi on 2 July 2009. That judgement was overturned by the Supreme Court of India on 11 December 2013, with the Court holding that amending or repealing Section 377 should be a matter left to Parliament, not the judiciary.

Hyderabad Western Music Foundation invites you to

Workshop on Community Singing
Sharing Music – Creating Harmony

What is Community Music? How can we use music as a tool to connect people together and create the sense of a community?
We will explore how different communities have made used the simple act of singing together to boost their morale, bring each other together, and gain motivation.

HWMF is starting a Community singing project with bi-weekly sessions, from January.
The motivation behind these sessions of community singing is not singing for a prayer or singing for the country or patriotism - although we might take songs from religious / patriotic repertoire sometimes. But the motivation is simply to feel each others' energy and understand what it is like to sing with a room full of people.
We will sing songs from different languages each time, from all over the world. The songs will come from a variety of sources such as: Sea shanties from sailors, Folk songs from folk poets of India, Simplified classical songs / poems, Folk poems from around the world, Round Songs.

So if you are fond of singing just for the sheer joy of it, this is the place to be!

Tejaswinee Kelkar – who is at present doing her MS at IIIT in Hyderabad. She has studied Western Classical as well as Hindustani Classical music and is locally part of the choir group the Deccan Voices.

Mooki -Dance theatre performance
Sun Dec 22, 5:30 PM
Veena Basavarajaiah
Mooki is a dance-theatre production incorporating dialogue, dance, music, movement, sign language and silence.

Mooki, the kannada word for mute is the title of the piece that is inspired by Rabindranath Tagore's short story Subha. The story revolves around a dumb girl who is ironically named Subhashini (which in sanskrit means one with the ability to speak beautifully). This dynamics in the story is used as a metaphor in the piece to address the idea of freedom of speech that democracy claims to bestow upon its people.
The movement vocabulary explores sign language and is also inspired by entities like trees, animals and humans that are not bestowed with the ability to speak.
It looks at how language creates hierarchy within the framework of society with freedom of expression often being reserved to those with power. It looks at how the voice of those communities that are often misinterpreted, translated or seldom heard are often categorized as being marginalized. The piece draws from the experiences of the performers themselves and primarily focuses on how we
have all endured discrimination based on gender and sexuality in silence.
The piece is devised and performed by individuals hailing from diverse fields
and aims to expand the limiting definition of dance and theatre by incorporating text, live music, personal experience and movement. The piece is directed by Veena Basavarajaiah.

Raaga elements in Popular Music
Wed Dec 25, 6:00 PM
K L Pandey
Lamakaan invites you to an evening of unearthing RAGA ELEMENTS IN HINDI FILM MUSIC - A presentation by sri K.L.Pandey who wrote a book aptly titled HINDI CINE-SANGEET RAGOPAEDIA.

With the first Hindi talkie movie ‘Alam Ara’ in 1931, songs were introduced in Hindi films and after that they have become an integral part of them for all the times to come. With a variety of songs of different moods and for all the occasions , they have subconsciously found place in our minds and have become a part of life for almost every class of the society in some form or the other.
In music, there are 7 Shuddha Swaras (Pure notes) , 4 Komal Swaras (flat notes) and one Teevra Swar i.e. 12 Swaras when put together. We have an equivalent 12 notes in western system as well. The well defined structure of these Notes to create a melody makes Ragas, which are an important part of the grammar of singing or playing instruments in any form of music. In Hindi film songs also therefore, there cannot be any composition which does not follow the grammar of one or more than one Ragas. Although, in initial movies, all the songs were based on pure Ragas but to create melodies for the masses and to suit the requirements of the film, more than one Ragas have been used subsequently.

In this analytical research, the Mr. Pandey has worked with a team of experts and scholars of Hindustani classical music and the Ragas have been identified only after complete listening to the songs and also playing them on various instruments. The eminent professors and musicians in classical music and from the film industry have also been consulted wherever required.
The purpose of this effort by him is to make the music lovers understand our heritage of Hindustani Music through the examples of easily accessible and understandable Hindi film music and in a way, to bridge the gap between Hindustani Classical and Hindi film music.

One hour of encounter with the realities of everyday life with apna Hyderabadis, in an angle which'll comfort that aneurysm in your head 😛
Followed by open mic - where you could vent out 'bout anything, right from your khadoos boss, to your partner, to the mandi wala to world politics! Welcome to the lighter side of the world... Ommmm Shannnnti

Alick Bailey - Just an ordinary guy like you and me and finds life funny at every corner. Loves to laugh at himself and others for the heck of it ^_^

Sat Dec 7, 6:00 PM
Wemove Theatre
A romantic comedy in English, this play revolves around characters brilliantly common and distinct at the same time. Get ready
for your "This is so me!" moment. Written and Directed by Abhishek Iyengar, the play revolves around ‘A couple’ everyone
envies! They have everything in common; just the perfect families, perfect age and head over heels in love probably a match

after", hell breaks out! The lady gets a brainwave from the same heavens! A strong jolt, a sudden-strong-stable realization of
perfection being the ultimate flaw, calmness being the utter boredom and an impulsive compulsion for an adrenaline rush.
Embarking on this journey sans an adventure seems such a cliché. Not something "every" girl dreams of.
So what will she do? What will all of them do infact? Wait, "them" - Oh yes! There is more. Of course, where there's trouble,
there are friends and where there are friends there is action and reaction, there is drama and there is spice. An insecure,

Tyagayya (1981 film) was showcased at the Indian Panorama of International Film Festival of India in 1982.

Asmita Resource Centre for Women is orgnising this screening followed by discussion on the occasion of Human Rights day.

 Guftagu by Deepti Girotra
 Saas by Babli Yadav
 Chidi Ki Dukki by Pallavi Varma
