A collection of minimalist & impressionist paintings by artist couple Aamira Abdullah & Abdullah Khan.

These paintings can best be described as minimalist, expressionist, geometric, zen. They use carefully selected colour and large scale to evoke vivid perceptual and emotional responses in its viewers. They are designed to soothe and to allow the mind and eye to wander and relax, to enter an almost meditative state. We wanted to design the paintings to allow one to take a step back and look at the bigger picture of things, to allow attention to be invested a little at a time in an age where we are constantly bombarded with and distracted by visual stimuli, and to slow down a little so one could appreciate the present moment and contemplate it. The idea was also that in a stressful situation, if you were to sit down in front of it, it should calm you, benefit you in some way.

The play is about a disciple who despite the many warnings of his teacher ventures into a dark town ruled by a very foolish ruler. In this town, he discovers that the inhabitants are equally foolish. An incident follows a bizarre blame game which almost costs the Disciple his life.

This play uses ironic humour as a powerful resource to uncover the absurdities of India’s social and political systems: political corruption, exploitation and historical manipulation. In a tense environment where humour might not seem appropriate,
Bharatendu masterfully uses and critically examines it as a means to ridicule bureaucracy and the establishment, questioning in a caustic way people's conformity & positivity.

This script, though constructed on Bharatendu’s play, takes support of Tagore’s songs, poems of Sukumar Ray - the king of nonsense rhymes in Bengali, and Telugu folktales. The play appeals to audiences of all ages.

About the Playwright:
Bharatendu Harishchandra (1850-1885) is one of the most heard names in the history of modern Hindi literature. His plays typify the agonies of India, hopes and aspirations of the youth and urge for progress and removal of injustice.

About Play:

PRASTHAAV is a play in Hindi, adapted from Anton Chekov's 'A Marriage Proposal' written in 1888-1889 and first performed in 1890. It is a fast-paced play of dialogue-based action and situational humor.

A hilarious play depicting romance and marriage. The farce explores the process of getting married and is a satire on the upper middle class and courtship. The play points out the struggle to balance the economic necessities of marriage and what the characters themselves actually want. It shows that marriage is a mean of economic stability for most people and they marry to gain wealth and possessions or to satisfy social pressure.

Madan Sharma, a long-time neighbor of Shree Kamalprasad Varma, has come with a marriage proposal for Varmaji's daughter Radha but gets into an argument with her about the disputed land and also about their respective hunting dogs.

Watch the play to see if Sharma ultimately manages to propose her or not ? Lets see if he and Radha will get married or not.

About Writer:

Man who dwarfed the mountains film:
The National Award winning film “The Man Who Dwarfed The Mountains” captures the indomitable spirit of environmentalist Chandi Prasad Bhatt.

Seldom do a man’s deeds loom so large that they dwarf the very mountains from where they emanate. One such person is Chandi Prasad Bhatt, who has strong claims to being the first modern Indian environmentalist, and arguably also its greatest. Bhatt was one of the pioneers of the Chipko movement, not just a fight for protecting forests and environment, but a struggle for protecting and renewing livelihoods. The Film seeks to decipher the life, the motivation and work of a man who silently changed the paradigm of environment activism in India and has been described by Ramchandra Guha as one of the finest Indians alive today.

Fri Jun 10, 8:00 PM
Kissago Theatre and Film Production Group
This is an unusual bittersweet play written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1912. It talks about the last few days of a dying boy named Amal, who is confined to his adopted uncle's house by an incurable disease. From his perch by the window, he calls out to people passing by and talks with them until their daily routines force them to move on. Eventually, he gets inspired by the construction of the local post office and fantasizes about receiving a letter from the king and someday becoming a postman himself so that he can travel far and wide.

EK SHAAM PREMCHAND KE NAAM

Synopsis
The play is an amalgamation of two of Premchand’s stories, ‘Kafan’ and ‘Sadgati’. Both explore death in unlikely circumstances and play themselves out with unexpected twists and turns, all laced with the author’s humanist, equalitarian and socialist ideas. The two stories recreate the vivid reality of the Dalits, exposing pretensions and complacencies of dominant, feudal and patriarchal social forces.

The stories, that reveal the extraordinary range of Premchand’s writing, are blended together in a non-linear yet seamless narrative using ‘Burra-Katha’ - a performance art rooted in traditional storytelling, dance movement, and music in Andhra and Telangana regions.

About the author
Premchand (1880-1936) was the author of numerous short stories, novels and a play. Some of his best known works include Godan (1936), Rangabhumi (1925), Nirmala (1928), Gaban (1931) and Karmabhumi (1932). He wrote both in Hindi and Urdu.

EK SOIRACHARI RAJAR KATHA (The story of a despot)

Synopsis

Caligula, the Roman emperor, who succeeded Tiberius and preceded Claudius andruled for less than four years (AD 37-41), remains mythic for his fanatical approach to power. The play, “Ek Soirachari Rajar Katha” is not a period piece i.e. a play concerned with a historical time. It has drawn from Camus' “Caligula” the concept of deification of emperors which was common to the pagan world, theGreek and Macedonian kings, including Alexander the Great, who ordered their priests to proclaim them Gods, as did the Caesars startingwith Augustus.

In spite of restraining convention and law, the innately vicious or dangerously capricious autocratic tendency still exists. This enabled modern figures like Amin and Milosevic to indulge in ‘Caligula-ism’ – their dangerous whims and murderous eccentricities. Though it also meant that the only remedy for those who terrorizedwas assassination, "I (Caligula) am still alive!" (Caligula, tr. by Christopher Williams, 2007).

Black White & Grays in Between
Sun Jun 12, 4:00 PM
Abhishek A. Hemrajani
You are cordially invited to celebrate the publication of Black, White and the Grays in Between by Abhishek A. Hemrajani at Lamakaan

Ms. Meera Shenoy, social change maker, author and founder of Youth4Jobs will launch the book!

The Book:

Kanak is one of Houston’s most respected and successful doctors. Neil is the charming Head Boy from St. Teresa’s and her first childhood crush. Fate had reunited the two young lovers during their medical residency at the Baylor College of Medicine. In a life that had an extraordinary ability to leave her unfulfilled, Neil and her Pa, Keshav, were the only two men who had brought peace and happiness to the motherless Kanak. They had supported her, applauded her, and held her close through the turns of life.

Rukhsar is the beautiful twenty-four-year-old daughter of Barqat Malik, the noor of her Abbu’s eyes. Ashar is the handsome lover, who yearns to make his Rukhsar smile. Unlike Kanak, Rukhsar did have a caring Ammi. She also had a proud Abbu. However, she was eager to cast them off, along with the traditional values that she was expected to represent. Ashar was the only thread that still reeled her in, but even that could never be enough for a girl who just wanted to fly away.

Black, White and the Grays in Between is an emotional saga of hope, betrayed dreams, and the endless shades of gray. Set across three generations and three cities - Houston, Hyderabad, and the Bombay of the ‘70s - this is a story about love that is often selfless and self-doubting, and the unexpected virtue of listening to your heart.

Shudrka Hyderabad

Shudrka Hyderabad, an amateur theatre group based out of Hyderabad, has been performing plays in Hindi, Bangla and Telugu since 2004. Prasthaav (proposal)
Sun Jun 5, 8:00 PM
D@RP@N Theatre

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a Russian playwright and short story writer who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short fiction in history. His career as a playwright produced four classics and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics.
Alan Twigg, the chief editor and publisher of the Canadian book review magazine BC Bookworld wrote,

“One can argue Anton Chekhov is the second-most popular writer on the planet. Only Shakespeare outranks Chekhov in terms of movie adaptations of their work, according to the movie database IMDb. ... We generally know less about Chekhov than we know about mysterious Shakespeare”.

Dakghar by Rabindranath Tagore

Set across three generations and three cities - Houston, Hyderabad, and the Bombay of the ‘70s - this is a story about love that is often selfless and self-doubting, and the unexpected virtue of listening to your heart.

prasthaav (proposal)
Sun Jun 12, 8:00 PM
D@RP@N Theatre
