All India Students Association (AISA) in collaboration with Lamakaan is organising an introduction of the book "Gujarat Files: Anatomy Of A Cover Up" followed by talk by the author Rana Ayyub, whose account of an eight-month long undercover investigative journalism into the Gujarat riots, fake encounters and the murder of state Home Minister Haren Pandya brings to the fore the startling revelations of then Gujarat government under Modi into picture.

On part with it various attacks on intellectuals and students all over the country has exposed the anti-intellectual face of the Modi Sarkar, exposing it Rama Naga, General Secretary, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) will also be putting his experiences and perspectives of attack on students especially the marginalised and Dalits.

About the Book:
In 2010, the journalist Rana Ayyub spent eight months undercover in Gujarat. Ayyub, who was then working for Tehelka magazine, posed as a filmmaker. She met bureaucrats and senior police officials in Gujarat who held pivotal positions in the state between 2001 and 2010. The transcripts of the sting operation, unpublished so far, form the core of her book Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover Up. The self-published book narrates what the officials revealed about the complicity of the state machinery in the anti-Muslim violence in 2002, as well as in “encounters” such as the one that resulted in the killing of Ishrat Jehan, and the murder of the state home minister Haren Pandya, events that accompanied the consolidation of power in Gujarat by Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.

Sun Jul 17, 8:00 PM
Udaan Performing Arts
Is Kambakht Sathe Ka Kya Karen is an adaptation of the Marathi play, Sathecha Kay Karaycha, penned by the noted playwright Rajiv Naik and translated into Hindi by Jyoti Subhash.

The story focuses on the tender relationship between a husband and a wife. It tells us about the happily married life of a couple - Abhay, an ad filmmaker and Salma, a lecturer in college. Each of them face different tribulations in their professional lives, but Abhay takes his troubles far too seriously. He is of the opinion that his colleague Sathe does not deserve the recognition he gets. On the other hand, Salma loves her work and does not care about quick promotion and success. She believes that everything should be done with a pure heart. At a peak point, Salma deals with the situation and handles Abhay's frustration. At the end of the play, both build a strong trust in the relationship and create a companionship that surpasses understanding. The twists and turns and the tribulations the couple faces in balancing their married and professional lives form the rest of the story. This play tries to depict that a positive attitude can make things better.

A 3-Day Tribute Film Festival - Celebrating the Cinema of Master Directors. July 19-21, 2016

Day 1 - Inaugural by Cine Director Indraganti Mohana Krishna and talk by him on Iranian Director Abbas Kiarostami and his films followed by the movie Khane-ye doust kodjast?: Where is the Friend's Home?

This July month has proved bloody for the master directors and taken away the lives of Abbas Kiarostami (22 June 1940 – 4 July 2016), Hector Babenco (February 7, 1946 – July 13, 2016) and Michael Cimino (February 3, 1939 – July 2, 2016)from us. As a rich homage and tribute to these directors, we are coming together to talk about these directors life, movies and their impact on all cinema fraternity and life as well.

So here is a 3 Day Tribute Film Festival for the lovers of International Cinema in Hyderabad. We will be bringing one of their best films, showcasing and talking about them.

About Abbas Kiarostami:Abbas Kiarostami was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1940. He graduated from university with a degree in fine arts before starting work as a graphic designer. He then joined the Center for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults, where he started a film section, and this started his career as a filmmaker at the age of 30. Since then he has made many movies and has become one of the most important figures in contemporary Iranian film. He is also a major figure in the arts world, and has had numerous gallery exhibitions of his photography, short films and poetry. He is an iconic figure for what he has done, and he has achieved it all by believing in the arts and the creativity of his mind.

Synopsis of the film:The film tells a deceptively simple account of a conscientious schoolboy's quest to return his friend's notebook in a neighboring village, since, should his friend fail to hand it in the next day, it is likely he will get expelled. Hence this film has been seen as a metaphor for the sense of civil duty, about loyalty and everyday heroics. The traditional beliefs of Iranian rural people are also shown in many parts of the movie.

The film is among the top ten in the BFI list of the 50 films you should see by the age of 14.

FUTURE OF ENERGY FOR HYDERABAD
Sun Jul 24, 10:30 AM
Ecologise Hyderabad
Today all of us are aware that the era of fossil fuels – oil and coal is coming to an end. So far these have been major sources of energy – for transport and electricity. Urban people often forget that energy is not just transport but includes many other forms – fuels from trees, animal power, including human, in farming and hosts of other activities.

This workshop will discuss implications of end of the fossil fuel era and what we in Hyderabad can do about it. The future scenario that we will consider has a window of 10 -30 years. During this period the crisis will come to play and we have to put the alternatives in place. The alternatives essentially consist of, first scaling down the amount of energy used to say 1921 level and – solar
and animal power. Alternatives of wind, tidal, micro hydel and geo thermal are not relevant for Hyderabad. In solar again the bulk of it will come from solar photosynthesis, that is, from plants, then from solar thermal. Solar PV photovoltaic, is only for electricity and will play a minor role in the total energy scenario of the future.

Taan Bekro Documentary Screening
Sun Jul 24, 4:00 PM
GreatGameIndia
The nomadic tribe of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan commonly known as Kalbeliya or Jogiya or Snake charmers have mesmerized the world for many years with their culture. For many years the tribe has been a point of interest for connoisseurs of art & culture and ethnic studies.

Before they left India, little is known about the culture, which generated the Gypsies, except for their migrations, within and out of India. Linguistics and historians believe that the Gypsies were originally from North Central India. Their first known migration started around 300 BC, when they moved to North Western India. Even though the lineage of the Roma people of South Eastern Europe can be traced to the Kalbeliya of India, the tribe in its own country unfortunately is still looked down as ‘untouchables’

Though many attempts have been made to preserve and promote their art form however none so far has really been in the direction of providing sustainable development to the people of the tribe and removing their untouchable status. To add to their misery A Wildlife Protection Act introduced in 1972 has prohibited catching snakes, a common source of income undertaken by Kalbeliya men in the early days. This has left many amongst the tribe to opt for begging or breaking stones for construction purpose as a ways to earn a piece of bread. The problems quantify especially during the non-tourist season in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

This is an ethnographic film based on the livelihood, cultural heritage and struggles of the nomadic Jogi Tribe of Rajasthan. A poetic journey of the rendezvous with the tribe commonly known as the Saperas (Snake Charmers) or Kalbeliyas, in a quest to discover their cultural existence & lifestyle. The film encompasses the vast and beautiful Indian desert into the various ethnic harmonies. This documentary attempts to showcase the problematic isolated lifestyle of this tribe struggling for their existence & social recognition...

Join us at Lamakaan at 7pm where you can buy a copy of the book.

One of the last legendary courtesans of India, Begum Akhtar was a well known singer of ghazal, dadra and thumri genres of Hindustani classical music. Her voice was unique, pain adding richness and depth as the years went by. Rendering them in her inimitable style, she ensured that ghazal singing received due respect and came to be called Malika-e-Ghazal (Queen of the Ghazal), reaching unparalleled heights in a world that threatened to marginalize courtesans.
