Celebrating Pedro Almodóvar
Wed Sep 30, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
As the September rains linger in Hyderabad, washing the city in a gentle rhythm, Lamakaan celebrates cinema with the Pedro Almodóvar Film Festival, held every Wednesday evening. Just as the monsoon brings color and intensity to the city, Almodóvar’s films bring vibrancy, emotion, and bold storytelling to the screen. His cinema is about freedom—freedom of identity, freedom of love, freedom of expression—and in that sense, it resonates beautifully with the spirit of September, a month when India celebrates its independence and the courage to define its own path.
Pedro Almodóvar (born September 25, 1949 in Calzada de Calatrava, Spain) is one of the most celebrated Spanish filmmakers of our time. Rising to prominence in the post‑Franco era, he became the voice of Spain’s cultural rebirth. His films are known for their vivid colors, complex female characters, and fearless exploration of sexuality, desire, and human relationships. With works like Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), All About My Mother (1999), Talk to Her (2002), and Volver (2006), Almodóvar has won international acclaim, including Academy Awards and recognition at Cannes. His style blends melodrama with humor, turning everyday struggles into universal stories of resilience and passion.
Film Title: PAIN AND GLORY | 2019 | 114 Mins | Spain | Spanish with English Subtitles.
About the film: Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas), an aging filmmaker plagued by illness and depression, reflects on his past—his childhood with his mother (Penélope Cruz), his first loves, and his creative struggles. Through reconnections and memories, he finds catharsis and renewed artistic purpose. A deeply autobiographical work, it’s Almodóvar’s meditation on art, memory, and identity.
Screening followed by Discussion. All are Welcome. Entry is free and open to all!

Remembering Jacques Tati
Wed Oct 7, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
As Hyderabad moves past the dry September with little rain, we look forward to October, hoping for the first hints of winter in the air. In that spirit of change and gentle anticipation, Lamakaan brings you the Jacques Tati Film Festival, every Wednesday evening this month. Just as the season shifts, Tati’s films invite us to pause, observe, and laugh at the quirks of modern life. His cinema is a reminder that humor can be subtle, human, and deeply connected to the rhythms of everyday existence.
Jacques Tati (born October 9, 1907 in Le Pecq, France – died November 4, 1982 in Paris, France) was one of France’s most beloved filmmakers, actor‑directors, and comedians. He created a unique style of visual comedy that relied less on dialogue and more on carefully choreographed physical humor, sound design, and the absurdities of modern society. His iconic character, Monsieur Hulot, became a symbol of the ordinary man navigating the complexities of modernity. Tati’s films—such as Jour de fête (1949), Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday (1953), Mon Oncle (1958), and Playtime (1967)—are celebrated for their gentle satire, inventive use of sound, and timeless charm. His contribution to cinema lies in showing that comedy can be both poetic and critical, making audiences laugh while reflecting on the world around them.
Tati’s work remains important because it bridges the gap between silent‑era physical comedy and modern social critique. His films are not just entertainment; they are cultural observations that capture the humor in everyday life and the absurdities of progress.
Film Title: JOUR DE FÊTE (THE BIG DAY) | 1949 | 87 Mins | France | French with English Subtitles.
About the film: Jour de fête (The Big Day) is Jacques Tati’s first feature film, a delightful rural comedy set in a small French village preparing for its annual fair. Tati plays François, the local postman, whose clumsy antics and fascination with modern efficiency create endless comic situations. Inspired by an American newsreel about speedy postal services, François attempts to modernize his own delivery methods—with hilariously chaotic results. Shot with warmth and affection for village life, the film captures Tati’s emerging style: visual gags, playful sound effects, and a gentle satire of modern progress. It remains a charming introduction to his world of comedy.

Starting from the young people who came together at Jantar Mantar during the CJP protests, this conversation asks what brought them there, what they made possible together, and what we can learn by understanding these protests as part of an emerging Gen Z politics.
Is NEP the only reason for the protest, and if not, then what were the other causes that led to the protest? A critical discussion around Eram Agha’s Caravan article “Teaching a Lesson: How the NEP’s killing of the public university brought Gen Z out on the streets”. Alongside questioning education policy, students’ futures, social change.

What if you could draw a song?
In this unique, immersive workshop, we’ll explore the connection between music, emotions and art.
Instead of drawing what you see, you’ll listen to different pieces of music and turn what you hear and feel into colours, lines, shapes, patterns and textures.
Along the way, you’ll also learn simple and fun art techniques that will help you translate sounds and emotions onto paper.
You don’t need to be an artist or know how to draw. There are no right or wrong interpretations. Your artwork is your own response to the music.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have created a unique artwork inspired entirely by the music you heard, which you can take home with you.
While you learn different art techniques, you’ll also be introduced to basic music forms, their structure and a little history and information on what you hear!
* Learn new art techniques
* 🎶 Listen, feel and create

Ek aur Dronacharya
Sun Oct 11, 8:00 PM
Nikhil Ahuja from Bias Check Theatre
Ek Aur Dronacharya, penned by Shankar Shesh, is a thought-provoking and hard-hitting play that remains profoundly relevant even today. It portrays the moral conflict of a teacher who becomes the modern inheritor of Dronacharya's legacy, caught between personal integrity and societal pressures. The play functions both as a reinterpretation of a historical myth and as a powerful critique of contemporary society, illustrating how power, corruption, and institutional compromise can erode even the noblest ideals. By drawing parallels between the ancient epic and the present, Shankar Shesh transcends mere retelling, using mythology to expose enduring human dilemmas and to question the ethical foundations of modern education, justice, and social systems.

But despite the mayhem and chaos, the struggle of Palestinians remains alive and is gaining increasing solidarity from across the world. We the people of India also should not stop talking about Palestine. In order to express our solidarity with the people of Palestine, Indian People in Solidarity with Palestine and BDS India are organising a cultural evening. We invite all pro-Palestinian citizens, artists, students and youth of Hyderabad to be part of this event with your posters, poems and artworks.

Book Discussion Sylvia Karapagam
Thu Oct 15, 7:00 PM
Firdaus Soni
This program is a talk and conversation with Dr Sylvia Karpagam on her new book, The Meat of the Matter: How the Politics of Food Shapes Our Health (HarperCollins India). Dr Karpagam is a public health doctor and researcher with over two decades of experience in food and nutrition policy.
In conversation, she will unpack the myths surrounding "healthy," "ethical," and "pure" food in India and ask whether eggs really raise cholesterol, whether India is truly a vegetarian country, and why access to nutrient-dense food is restricted not just by scarcity but by politics, ideology, caste, and religion-based prejudice.
The session will run for approximately 2 hours, including a moderated discussion followed by an audience Q&A. It promises to challenge what we think we know about food and leave attendees with evidence-based perspectives on one of the most contested subjects in Indian public life.

STRANGERS AFTER DARK
Strangers, stories, what-ifs & conversations worth having.
Strangers After Dark is a Halloween evening for young adults exploring the strange, funny, uncomfortable and deeply human things we think about but don't always say out loud.
The evening combines interactive games, storytelling, anonymous prompts, psychology trivia and facilitated conversations. Participants can contribute to a "What-If Wall", respond to another stranger's question, test their psychology knowledge through "Therapy Trivia", and write their own "Horror Story" about the scariest part of adulthood.
A creative "Anger Station" offers a space to anonymously write something they are angry about and physically tear or crush the note.
The central social experience brings strangers together through progressively deeper conversation prompts, followed by a facilitated conversation with "Zara, a practising psychologist", exploring themes that emerge during the evening — including loneliness, vulnerability, overthinking, emotional expression and making friends as adults.
Costumes are welcome, but not required.

UNDERSTAND HOW MACROECONOMIC FORCES AFFECT YOU AND YOUR FINANCES AT A PERSONAL LEVEL
How does a war across the globe affect the interest rate you're getting on your fixed deposits?
What does it mean to save, invest and borrow money in a world where macroeconomic forces control everything? We live in world that is so interconnected that it is impossible for us to think of our money in isolation. Global forces are constantly changing how much we earn and what value our money has, and what we can do with it.
To be able to navigate this, we must first have an understanding of how things work. That is exactly what this book sets out to do.
Through engaging examples and activities, you will learn about credit, investment instruments, the worth of real estate and much more. A must-read for every global citizen.

Remembering Jacques Tati
Wed Oct 21, 7:00 PM
Film Title: MON UNCLE (MY UNCLE) | 1958 | 120 Mins | France & Italy | French with English Subtitles.
About the film: Mon Oncle (French pronunciation: [mɔ̃n‿ɔ̃kl]; transl. My Uncle) is a 1958 French-language comedy film directed by Jacques Tati. The first of Tati's films to be released in colour,[c] Mon Oncle won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film,[5] a Special Prize at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival,[6] and the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Language Film, receiving more honours than any of Tati's other cinematic works.
Screening followed by Discussion. All are Welcome. Entry is free and open to all!

Domestic Workers’ Movements
Sat Oct 24, 5:00 PM
Ufaque Paiker
In the twentieth century, in response to workers’ mass movements, labor rights were granted to a section of working class considered necessary for uninterrupted capital accumulation. However, simultaneously, workers employed in so-called non-capitalist occupations were excluded from these labor protections. Domestic workers were one such quintessential group of workers excluded from the definition of workers in labor laws. Given this history of misrecognition, demanding labor rights and symbolic recognition has been at the center of domestic workers’ movements across the globe. In this talk, I discuss my book project From Homes to Streets: Articulation in Domestic Workers’ Movements in India and South Africa which is a comparative sociological study of domestic workers’ rights movements in the two countries. Drawing on extensive fieldwork with domestic workers’ organizations in India and South Africa, I provide an account of how domestic workers have presented the case of their labor rights to the state, employers, and wider society. I argue that how domestic workers’ movements have framed their cause in pursuit of legal and symbolic recognition, offers an explanation into the varying degrees of advances they have made in their respective national contexts. I will show how the domestic workers have framed their claims to labor rights building on, often strategically and selectively, anti-caste, feminist, and black consciousness discourse and political forces.
