Democracy is kept alive when it is actively worked upon and not when it stagnates as a concept. Complacency gives space to fascist forces to infringe upon the rights of people slowly but steadily and systematically and eventually uproot democracy. The Constitution of India safeguards our rights and more of us need to be aware of our rights and duties enshrined in it. Taking inspiration from life of the late Zaheeruddin Ali Khan, who worked relentlessly to ensure the rights of people, Dr. Vinay Kumar and Dr. Oudhesh Bawa will share their thoughts on how we can practically safeguard the Constitution of India in our capacity as ordinary citizens thus keeping democracy alive in our country.

Marathi Filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane’s directorial debut ‘Court’ is a biting critique of the judicial system in India where those speaking in favour of the oppressed and exploited are often found at the receiving end of the criminal justice system. The film revolves around the trial of a Dalit protest singer Narayan Kamble (Vira Sathidar) who is accused that one of his songs allegedly encouraged a Dalit manhole worker to commit suicide. As the trial proceeds, the arbitrariness of the entire state machinery and its anti-people character stands thoroughly exposed. Recently, the Maharashtra Police was seen acting in a similar manner in real life when it lodged a case against Pushpa Sathidar, wife of late Vira Sathidar who played the lead role in the ‘Court’ movie, for reciting Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s famous poem ‘Hum Dekhenge’. In this context it would be quite relevant to revisit the movie and discuss its relevance. The screening will be followed by a discussion on the craft and content of the movie. All are cordially welcome! Subtitles will be provided.

The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

Young Orators' Club (est. 1969) is the oldest member-run club in Hyderabad that is dedicated to oratory and critical thinking. Since 1969 we have held regular sessions every Saturday, from 05:30 PM to 08:30 PM, at the YMCA, Secunderabad.

We have no age-limits, mandatory dress codes, or entry restrictions - everyone is allowed to freely walk in and participate in the session. If you are curious or wish to work on improving your public-speaking skills, walk in this Saturday and discover a welcoming community of passionate orators.
