In Solidarity with Palestine
Fri Oct 11, 4:00 PM
Indian People in Solidarity with Palestine, Hyderabad Cinephiles
Indian People in Solidarity with Palestine along with Hyderabad Cinephiles and In Defense of Reason present

"An Evening in Solidarity with Palestine"
A year has passed since Zionist Israel launched its genocidal war against the people of Palestine. More than 3/4ths of the most densely populated place on earth, Gaza, lies in ruins, and over 45,000 people have been killed so far, of whom 20,000 were children. The settler-colonial state of Israel, backed shamelessly by Western imperialist countries, has been denying the right of the Palestinian people to their land. However, history serves as a stark reminder for them that oppression only breeds resistance. The Palestinian fight for liberation can never be killed, and it is an inspiration for people across the world in every fight against injustice. The fight for Palestine knows no borders, and we invite the justice-loving people of Hyderabad to join us for an evening of solidarity, where we will look at and discuss the history and spirit of the Palestinian cause through films, poster exhibition, poetry and song. Join us as we pay tribute to the undying bravery of Palestine.

From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free!

REELISTIC- MOVIE ANALYSIS
Sun Oct 13, 3:00 PM
REELISTIC
Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human
mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within,
sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly.
The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking
deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that
weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A
movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can
be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in
the directors head when the movie was made. Either
way, it’s a different way of understanding human
behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper
into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand
ourselves better.

Celebrating Ang Lee
Wed Oct 16, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
This October, let us celebrate the cinema of Ang Lee, one of the most creative directors of our time.

Ang Lee (born October 23, 1954) is a Taiwanese filmmaker. His films are known for their emotional charge and exploration of repressed, hidden emotions. During his career, he has received international critical and popular acclaim and numerous accolades, including three Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. In 2003, he was ranked 27th in The Guardian's 40 best directors.[6]

Born in Pingtung County, Lee was educated in Taiwan and later in the United States. He rose to prominence directing films such as Pushing Hands (1991), The Wedding Banquet (1993), and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), which explored the relationships and conflicts between tradition and modernity, Eastern and Western; the three films are informally known as the "Father Knows Best" trilogy.[7] The films were critically successful both in Taiwan and internationally.

His breakthrough in Hollywood was the costume drama Sense and Sensibility (1995), his first entirely English-language film. Lee went on to receive the Academy Award for Best Director twice for the romantic drama Brokeback Mountain (2005) and the survival drama Life of Pi (2012). He directed films in a broad range of genres, including the drama The Ice Storm (1997), the martial arts drama Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), the superhero movie Hulk (2003), and the erotic espionage drama Lust, Caution (2007).

Film Title: SENSE & SENSIBILITY | 1995 | 136 Mins | UK & USA | English Language with English Subtitles

Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman play their respective suitors.

Indian Demography: Myths & Facts
A Talk by Sujai Karampuri

There is a fear, real or imaginary, that the population of certain communities is increasing quite drastically to alter the current composition in this country, some referring to it as a 'threat to India’.

Are these fears indeed real and rational?

Or are they artificial and imaginary?

Only real facts, the ground realities, the actual data tell the truth.

About the speaker: Sujai Karampuri was born in Warangal, Telangana, and attended RECW and Michigan Tech. He lived in the US, Europe, and Bangalore and is now settled in Hyderabad.

He worked in the telecommunications industry in the US and Europe ran his own technology venture in Bangalore and worked for the Government of Telangana. He is now back to industry. He played an active role in the Telangana Movement.

Flooding in Hyderabad

Flooding in Hyderabad: The Role of Government and Citizens in Prevention and Lake Conservation.

Even a small rainfall brings Hyderabad to a standstill. Traffic halts, colonies flood, and essential items are submerged. This urgent situation demands our immediate attention. What historical mistakes have led to this? What are the immediate and long-term solutions? And what responsibilities do both citizens and the government hold in addressing this crisis? There are several laws in place, like The Environmental Protection Act of 1986, The Telangana Water, Land, and Trees Act of 2002, The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1974, and The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1981. These laws empower authorities such as the State Pollution Control Board and WALTA officials to protect our environment at the State, District, Divisional, and Mandal levels. But despite these regulations, why is the destruction of lakes and unchecked flooding continuing? Recently, the Telangana government introduced HYDRA (Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Monitoring and Protection Agency) to safeguard the city's lakes and commons. However, the critical question remains: Do we have a comprehensive, long-term policy for protecting our environment and the safety of our people in our state? A comprehensive policy is urgently needed—one that addresses lake restoration, sustainable urban planning, drainage infrastructure, rainwater harvesting, and strict enforcement of environmental laws. It must integrate ecological conservation with flood management to ensure long-term protection for both the environment and the people of Hyderabad. Only through united, coordinated efforts between the government and active citizen participation can we prevent recurring floods and environmental damage. Therefore, let us come together to discuss the necessity of a compressive policy and recommendations from the Justice Movement of India (JMI).

Whither Free Software Movement?
Sat Oct 26, 4:00 PM
In Defense of Reason
The Open Source movement has defeated the Free Software Movement(FSM). Hopes of a revolutionary transformation of the software world, leave alone the society, have been proven to be idealist and the Corporate takeover of the so-called Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) movement is complete. The FOSS movement is today led by the big corporate, and the spirit of activism is almost dead. Hence it’s important to discuss the historical trajectory of both the movements, and analyze ideological weakness of the Free Software Movement. The program will focus on a review of corporate control over the FOSS movement, the reasons behind the "success" of the Open Source Movement, the historical compromises of the FSM, false notions FSM nourished about political economy of the software world and volunteerism, in the perspective of the Anarchist underpinnings of the activists within the FSM.

Celebrating Terrence Malick
Wed Nov 6, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
As the winter sets in Hyderabad, it's a perfect time to watch cinema in the evening as the sun sets quite early these days.

This month, Lamakaan presents the cinema of Terrence Malick, known for his philosophical theme films.

Terrence Frederick Malick (born November 30, 1943) is an American filmmaker. His films include Badlands (1973); Days of Heaven (1978); The Thin Red Line (1998), for which he received Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award nominations and won the Golden Bear at the 49th Berlin International Film Festival; The New World (2005); The Tree of Life (2011), which garnered him another Best Director Oscar nomination and the Palme d'Or at the 64th Cannes Film Festival; and A Hidden Life (2019).

Malick began his career as part of the New Hollywood generation of filmmakers with Badlands, about a murderous couple on the run in 1950s American Midwest, and Days of Heaven, which details a love triangle between two laborers and a wealthy farmer during the First World War, before a lengthy hiatus. His films have explored transcendence, nature, and conflicts between reason and instinct. Broad philosophical and spiritual overtones and the use of meditative voice-overs from individual characters typically mark them. Malick's style has polarized scholars and audiences; many praise his films for their lavish cinematography and aesthetics, but others fault them for lacking plot and character development. His work has nonetheless ranked highly in retrospective decade-end and all-time polls.

Film Title: BADLANDS | 1973 | 93 Mins | USA | English Language with English Subtitles

About the film: Badlands is a 1973 American neo-noir period crime drama film written, produced, and directed by Terrence Malick in his directorial debut. The film stars Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek and follows Holly Sargis (Spacek), a 15-year-old who goes on a killing spree with her partner, Kit Carruthers (Sheen). The film also stars Warren Oates and Ramon Bieri. While the story is fictional, it is loosely based on the real-life murder spree of Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, in 1958.

The Gonds, are the largest Adivasi Community in India and are Dravidian's whose origin can be traced to the pre-Aryan era. They are mainly found in Madhya Pradesh and its surrounding States. The word Gond comes from the Dravidian expression kond , meaning green mountain . In the Gond belief system, besides Bara Deo (Great God), every hill, river, lake, tree, and rock is inhabited by a spirit and therefore sacred. Gond paintings are fascinating, where the artists express their faiths and beliefs, world view, their visual expression and sense of identity, both as a collective, and as individuals. In Solidarity with Palestine

There is a fear, real or imaginary, that the population of certain communities is increasing quite drastically to alter the current composition in this country, some referring to it as a 'threat to India’.

India has a rich tradition of folk arts. The custodians of which are the many tribes that live in the interiors of various states.
