Wealth and Inequality in India

Description for the email subscribers:

This comparative project spanning South Africa, Brazil, and India (NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Kolkata) attempted to map the social dynamics of wealth ownership and reveal what drives wealth inequality in the Global South. The study sought to understand questions such as: Who are the wealthy Indians? How have they come to acquire vast amounts of wealth? What kinds of wealth do they own? What social backgrounds do they come from? How do social and political networks contribute to the diversification of wealth? What are the conceptual and methodological challenges of studying wealthy in India?
This panel discussion intends to disseminate the major findings of the project and generate a conversation on the differentiation of accumulation across regional and social groups as well as the relation between wealth and politics and the changing nature of state-business relationship.

Lamakaan
This October, let us celebrate the cinema of Ang Lee, one of the most creative directors of our time.

Ang Lee (born October 23, 1954) is a Taiwanese filmmaker. His films are known for their emotional charge and exploration of repressed, hidden emotions. During his career, he has received international critical and popular acclaim and numerous accolades, including three Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. In 2003, he was ranked 27th in The Guardian's 40 best directors.[6]

Born in Pingtung County, Lee was educated in Taiwan and later in the United States. His breakthrough in Hollywood was the costume drama Sense and Sensibility (1995), which was also his first entirely English-language film. Lee went on to receive the Academy Award for Best Director twice for the romantic drama Brokeback Mountain (2005) and the survival drama Life of Pi (2012). Soul Murder: Reclaim the Night
Fri Oct 4, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
A personal reading by the Poet Dr. Fatima Shahnaz's upcoming publication of her poetry collection.

‘SOUL MURDER,’ INCLUDING ‘RECLAIM THE NIGHT,’ NIRBHAYA, ABHAYA, IN FETTERED DARKNESS, and ‘I AM A NATION’

An evening when protest poetry meets performance art – A timely book in the Aftermath of the rape and Murder of Abhaya, victimized at the R.G Kar Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal on October 9. This anthology of poetry is a heart-wrenching tribute to all the women who have suffered abuse and violence against women, written and performed by a feminist author who has worked as an advocate of international human rights both in the U.S. and India.

The poems Shahnaz will read give searing insights into the ‘rape culture’ that uncovers a deeper societal sickness, all expressed in dazzling poetic imagery and form. The author, poet, journalist, professor (frmly), international advocate of human rights, director and actor of theatre in New York, combines a dramatic theatrical rendering with the deeply moving actualization of the harrowing victimization of women in our country, and elsewhere where women continue to be oppressed.

The Government of France awarded Fatima Shahnaz a citation as a ‘Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters’ (Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres); she was one of the few and first journalists and activists who were allowed to visit the gruesome house where the murders of scores of children and women took place in Nithari, on the borders of Delhi, in 2006, when she wrote about the tragedy and interacted with impoverished parents of the disappeared children.

Join the firebrand author in solidarity in our national grieving process in a national tragedy.

required a lot of money.
As time passed, they both got into smoking weed, and soon enough, it became an addiction.

their friendship. One day, they realized that they needed a lot of money to achieve their
dreams and came up with an idea to start selling weed.
Their business flourished, and they were making a lot of money. but it wasn't long before things

each other. Their addiction to weed grew, and their friendship began to suffer.
As they both reached the peak of their business, they lost sight of their values and were willing
to do anything to make more money. The shortcuts they took to achieve their dreams didn't
bring them true happiness.

"An Evening in Solidarity with Palestine"
A year has passed since Zionist Israel launched its genocidal war against the people of Palestine. More than 3/4ths of the most densely populated place on earth, Gaza, lies in ruins, and over 45,000 people have been killed so far, of whom 20,000 were children. The settler-colonial state of Israel, backed shamelessly by Western imperialist countries, has been denying the right of the Palestinian people to their land. However, history serves as a stark reminder for them that oppression only breeds resistance. The Palestinian fight for liberation can never be killed, and it is an inspiration for people across the world in every fight against injustice. The fight for Palestine knows no borders, and we invite the justice-loving people of Hyderabad to join us for an evening of solidarity, where we will look at and discuss the history and spirit of the Palestinian cause through films, poster exhibition, poetry and song. Join us as we pay tribute to the undying bravery of Palestine.

REELISTIC- MOVIE ANALYSIS
Sun Oct 13, 3:00 PM
REELISTIC
Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human
mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within,
sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly.
The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking
deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that
weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A
movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can
be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in
the directors head when the movie was made. Either
way, it’s a different way of understanding human
behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper
into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand
ourselves better.

Celebrating Ang Lee
Wed Oct 2, 7:00 PM

He rose to prominence directing films such as Pushing Hands (1991), The Wedding Banquet (1993), and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), which explored the relationships and conflicts between tradition and modernity, Eastern and Western; the three films are informally known as the "Father Knows Best" trilogy.[7] The films were critically successful both in Taiwan and internationally.

He directed films in a broad range of genres, including the drama The Ice Storm (1997); the martial arts drama Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000); the superhero movie Hulk (2003) and the erotic espionage drama Lust, Caution (2007).

About Writer:

Sadat Hasan Manto seems to have a special place for women in his heart

Women in his writings were not so orthodox kind of women but women who were from various strata of society. A woman to him was not just a mother or sister or wife but also an individual.

He described a woman's desires and wants and her outlook towards the society in a new light altogether.

DARPAN makes an attempt to pay an ode to the women of Manto. Written in URDU, these writings were a tight slap on the then social structure and the male chauvinism.

Synopsis:

Is a woman just an object of sex?

This was the question raised in an era when even talking about sex was a big taboo. But the carnal desires see no time, era or taboo. You fall for someone and that moment is what matters. But then is it worth the life long stigma that comes along with?

How a man just detaches and how a woman sets a journey of emotional turmoil during the next 9 months, is the crux of the story. The pleasures of finding someone, the joy of fulfillment and then the pains of separation, the agony of being cheated....

well journey of this high emotional drama ends with a big shock...

Synopsis:
It is a story about two college students, Shiva and Hari, who became friends in their freshman
year. They had a lot in common, including their strong ambitions to achieve their dreams, which
required a lot of money.
As time passed, they both got into smoking weed, and soon enough, it became an addiction.
They started to spend most of their time getting high, neglecting their studies, passion and even
their friendship. One day, they realized that they needed a lot of money to achieve their
dreams and came up with an idea to start selling weed.
Their business flourished, and they were making a lot of money. but it wasn't long before things
started to go wrong. They got involved with the wrong crowd and started to have conflicts with
each other. Their addiction to weed grew, and their friendship began to suffer.
As they both reached the peak of their business, they lost sight of their values and were willing
to do anything to make more money. The shortcuts they took to achieve their dreams didn't
bring them true happiness.
In the end, Shiva and Hari decided to quit their business and focus on their friendship and

achieve their goals. They learned that true happiness comes from doing things the right way,

Or are they artificial and imaginary?

Only real facts, the ground realities, the actual data tell the truth.

About the speaker: Sujai Karampuri was born in Warangal, Telangana, and attended RECW and Michigan Tech. He lived in the US, Europe, and Bangalore and is now settled in Hyderabad.
