Whither Fascism?
Sat Jun 22, 2:00 PM
In Defense of Reason
After the electoral setback of the fascist forces in the Loksabha elections, many had hoped that fascism would be less aggressive and the attacks on civil and democratic rights would come to halt. However, the preparation to prosecute author Arundhati Roy and Kashmir-based academic Sheikh Showkat Hussain under the UAPA indicates that such hopes are misplaced. Under these new circumstances it’s important to understand what is going to be the strategy of fascism in Modi 3.0 regime. The history bears enough testimony to the fact that fascists are more aggressive in the aftermath of electoral setbacks. Any strategy of anti-fascist resistance must take this into account. In this context we are organising this discussion. We invite all the justice-loving people of Hyderabad to participate in this important discussion.

DBA Queers Community Building
Sat Jun 22, 4:00 PM
Niyut
Care, resting, and community building are essential for the well-being of Dalit, Bahujan, and Adivasi (DBA) queers, who navigate the intersecting oppressions of casteism and heteronormativity. Self-care and rest are acts of resistance for DBA queers, offering necessary reprieves from the systemic discrimination they face. Creating spaces that prioritize their mental and physical health helps in fostering resilience and empowerment. Community building among DBA queers is equally crucial, as it provides a supportive network where individuals can share experiences, celebrate cultural heritage, and find solidarity. Through collective care practices and mutual support, DBA queer communities can strengthen their identities, challenge oppressive structures, and advocate for social justice. These efforts not only enhance individual well-being but also build a more inclusive and affirming community, where DBA queers can thrive and lead transformative change. We will read and discuss material on care, resting and community-building.

Remembering Abbas Kiarostami
Wed Jun 26, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
After the sweltering summer month of May, we move to the monsoon month of June, where the freshness and fragrance of air and rain fill the atmosphere. Let the same freshness continue in our Wednesday screenings at Lamakaan as we remember one of the most iconic names in the world of cinema, Abbas Kiarostami.

Abbas Kiarostami (Persian: عباس کیارستمی (22 June 1940 – 4 July 2016) was an Iranian film director, screenwriter, poet, photographer, and film producer. An active filmmaker from 1970, Kiarostami had been involved in the production of over forty films, including shorts and documentaries. Kiarostami attained critical acclaim for directing the Koker trilogy (1987–1994), Close-Up (1990), The Wind Will Carry Us (1999), and Taste of Cherry (1997), which was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival that year. In later works, Certified Copy (2010) and Like Someone in Love (2012), he filmed for the first time outside Iran: in Italy and Japan, respectively. His films Where Is the Friend's Home? (1987), Close-Up and The Wind Will Carry Us were ranked among the 100 best foreign films in a 2018 critics' poll by BBC Culture. Close-Up was also ranked one of the 50 greatest movies of all time in the famous decennial Sight & Sound poll conducted in 2012.

Kiarostami had worked extensively as a screenwriter, film editor, art director, and producer and had designed credit titles and publicity material. He was also a poet, photographer, painter, illustrator, and graphic designer. He was part of a generation of filmmakers in the Iranian New Wave. This Persian cinema movement started in the late 1960s and emphasized poetic dialogue and allegorical storytelling dealing with political and philosophical issues.

Kiarostami had a reputation for using child protagonists, documentary-style narrative films,[9] for stories in rural villages, and conversations that unfold inside cars, using stationary mounted cameras. He is also known for his use of Persian poetry in the dialogue, titles, and themes of his films. Kiarostami's films contain a notable degree of ambiguity, an unusual mixture of simplicity and complexity, and often a mix of fictional and documentary elements. The concepts of change and continuity and the themes of life and death play a major role in Kiarostami's works.

Film Title: 24 FRAMES | 2017 | 114 Mins | France & Iran | Persian Language with English Subtitles

About the film: The film is structured in 24 chapters of "Frames" usually set in a fixed camera position filming a scene of nature or the seashore. The 'action' of each Frame is highly constrained and often focuses on either one or two animals casually interacting or possibly vaguely interacting. The opening Frame depicts the oil masterpiece by Bruegel of Hunters in the Snow and selectively animates the actions of one of the animals or birds depicted by Bruegel by superimposing movement upon Brugel's original canvas to suggest motion and life. The remainder of the Frames is fully grounded in real-world depictions from a fixed camera perspective for the frame's duration and centers on various aspects of nature and wildlife.

PHIRIBAR POTH NAI (NO WAY OUT!)
Sun Jun 30, 8:00 PM
SHUDRKA HYDERABAD
Our play “Phiribar Poth Nai” (No Way Out!) is a work less concerned with recounting the episodes of Jibanananda Das' life than with contextualizing an oeuvre that grew more opaque over time. We link Jibanananda's evolution from a poet of wonderment and celebrant of the Bengali landscape to a weaver of conundrums with the tensions of the Second World War, followed by the struggle for independence and the partition of Bengal. We connect and contrast poems of like titles written at different times or for different publications, and elucidate stylistic and lexical idiosyncrasies by cross-referencing extensively Jibanananda's verse with his fiction, essays, and correspondence, and the comments they evoked from critics and associates. Shudrka Hyderabad believes that Jibanananda deserves more critical acclaim as a truly modern poet than even Tagore and hence pays tribute to him on his 125th birth year.

July brings one of the finest directors of all time, Stanley Kubrick films to Wednesday screenings at Lamakaan.

About the Stanley Kubrick: Stanley Kubrick (/ˈkuːbrɪk/; July 26, 1928 – March 7, 1999) was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and photographer. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, his films were nearly all adaptations of novels or short stories, spanning a number of genres and gaining recognition for their intense attention to detail, innovative cinematography, extensive set design, and dark humor.

Born and raised in New York City, Kubrick was an average school student but displayed a keen interest in literature, photography, and film from a young age; he began to teach himself all aspects of film producing and directing after graduating from high school. After working as a photographer for Look magazine in the late 1940s and early 1950s, he began making low-budget short films and made his first major Hollywood film, The Killing, for United Artists in 1956. This was followed by two collaborations with Kirk Douglas: the anti-war film Paths of Glory (1957) and the historical epic film Spartacus (1960).

In 1961, Kubrick left the United States due to concerns about crime in the country, as well as a growing dislike for how Hollywood operated and creative differences with Douglas and the film studios; he settled in England, which he would leave only a handful of times for the rest of his life.

Anti- Israel protest in US

Anti Israel protest in US universities talk by Professor Immanuel Ness

The ongoing genocidal war in Gaza which the Zionist Israel has launched after 7 October last year has killed more than 36 thousand Palestinian including children, women and elderly besides reducing Gaza to rubble. But this unprecedented Israeli offensive has not deterred the Palestinian people as they continue to resist. The justice-loving people all over the world have been expressing their solidarity to the heroic Palestinian resistance and are call for boycotting Israel and divesting from companies benefitting from the occupation has gained renewed support. The most heartening aspect of this global solidarity was that the students and professors of about 150 college campuses took part in anti-Israel and pro-Palestine protests. The state repression on these protest demonstrations only led to spreading of the protests in the US, Europe and different parts of the world. This is very important moment in the global solidarity movement for the Palestinian people. In order to understand the reasons behind this enormous support for Palestine in US campuses and its implications, we have invited Professor Immanuel Ness who teaches political Science at City University of New York and who took part in the anti-Israel protest in his campus.

In this visually stunning film, directed by Burhan Qurbani, Francis, played by Welket Bungué, is an undocumented immigrant who arrives in Berlin with high hopes and the intention of being a decent person. But both the city and circumstances are against him. The film is based on Alfred Döblin's classic novel of the same name.

The story is about Franz Biberkopf who is now an immigrant named Francis, who has fled Guinea-Bissau to start a better life in Europe. After he survives both a storm and shipwreck, he vows to become a decent person. Arriving in Berlin, he makes a sincere effort to fulfil this oath, but his friendship with the drug dealer Reinhold and the social conditions in Germany stack the deck against him. He can draw hope from his love for Mieze, played by Jella Haase. Berlin Alexanderplatz is a lovely film that, instead of strictly following the classic book, tells a modern and expressive story that fits today's world.
