Farming Injustice - The impact of Israeli agro-tech in Telangana and Palestine.

Since the 90s Israeli corporations are involved in Telangana’s agriculture. Starting from the Kuppam project in the 90s to the so-called Centers of Excellence to be set up under the Indo-Israeli agricultural project and the recently announced trips for over 1000 agricultural state officials to Israel, ostensibly for training purposes, dozens of crores of public money fund Israeli projects in the state.

This dialogue with farmers from Palestine and Telangana wants to look at the impact of these state sponsored projects on farmers in the state and the Palestinian suffering from Israel’s agricultural policies, central to their dispossession and colonisation. It will relate experiences of struggle against Israel’s corporate takeover of agriculture in other regions of the world.

Women in Resistance in Telangana- Movie Screening and Sharing of Experiences

Bharat Ke Nirmata- Women in Resistance (By Shubham with Media Collective, Delhi) is a film that documents the sharing of challenges, concerns, hopes and dreams of women who were and are part of many people's movements across India.

Through stories, poetry, music and dance, the women narrate their lived experiences of what made them who they are and their struggle with family, society, state, religion and patriarchy.

The event shall begin with the screening of this film be followed by a panel discussion with seven women from different people's movements from Telangana. Every speaker shall speak on three major themes- personal journeys and struggles, their experiences in the immediate political struggle that they are leading or are a part of, and their vision for life and the world.

The film runs for 52 minutes after which the panel members shall speak for ten minutes each followed by an hour long open floor for audience questions and discussions.

Participants will be trained in the following areas.

1. Browsing Anonymously with Tor;
2. Using Encrypted communications platforms like Signal;
3. Using Email encryption;
4. Secure password management;

This workshop will follow a hands-on approach. Participants should bring their laptops and mobile devices.

In the times of Big Data and Internet of Things, digital security has become more significant than ever. Data-driven private giants are rapidly collecting and analyzing vast amounts of personal data belonging to individuals. Every electronic device and service today has the ability to monitor its users’ activities in excruciating detail, spawning an entire industry that treats data as money. As corporations come up with new and inventive ways to monetize personal data, civil liberties such as the right to privacy are often left by the wayside.

In addition, there have been instances where cyber-attacks have compromised highly sensitive personal information on a very large scale (such as the attack on Equifax that leaked social security numbers), proving that cyber-security is no longer a niche area. Increasing reliance on the Internet and smart devices is exposing people to more cyber-security threats, and the problem will only be compounded as technology permeates ever deeper into daily lives.

In this scenario, it is a cause for concern that most users remain unaware of the privacy and security risks that they face on a daily basis, or the nature and extent of damage that stands to be done in consequence.

This 'Digital Security Training’ Workshop is an effort towards raising awareness in this regard and help building digital security of attendees.

Who is a "real" man?
What are the qualities that he must posses?
What renders him "unmanly?

This screening is aimed at starting a collectively discussion about some of these questions.

Sandhu grew up hearing his father being called "namard" because he didn't hit Sandhu's schizophrenic mother.

This Screening and discussion is organized by Films & Conversations on Sexualities & Genders (FCSG), in partnership with Queer Campus Hyderabad (QCH) and Anveshi.

Makhdoom, the revolutionary poet, lived in Hyderabad. A progressive writer, a poet of great sensitivity, a revolutionary with deep sensitivity.
Makhdoom’s thoughts and poetics are explored through his poems and ghazals by Hyderabad’s famous ghazal singer, Adnan Salem. The set includes his political poems, love ballads, and ghazals.

Chekka Bommalata of Burugupeta Village, Telangana State
As part of 8th Anniversary Celebration, Lamakaan is organizing Traditional Wooden String Puppetry-Chekka Bommlata or Koyya Bommlata at Lamakaan.

Chekka Bommlata or Koyya Bommlata –String Puppetry is pride of Telangana State. At present two Mothe troupes-One from Ammapuram which is quite well known and second is Burugupeta (lesser known) perform it.

They belong to Beda Budiga Jangam Community. The uniqueness of this Budiga Jangam community is they are good singing, music rendition and in folk art forms. Buduga Jangam is an artistic community which has more than 24 sub communities along with Bommalalollu, Sarada Kala Rupamvalu, Kakipapala, Ganayeti, Mandhechchu, and so on.

However, Buduga is a percussion instrument associated with the narration of Jangam Kathas or Kathalu. This instrument is also known as Buduga, Budiga, Dikki,and Gummeta in Telugu. This Buduga Jangam community is the traditional narrators of stories from mythology, epics, and heroic tales of the region.

They also performed the obsequies rites to the saivites and in return were paid Beda or byada coin by them. So, they are also known as Beda Jangam or Beda Budiga Jangam. 8 Beda or Byada (this is how they pronounce it) is equal to Re-1/- and 16 Ek Anna equals to 8 Bydalu.

Basically, Budiga Jangaluvalu are wandering hunters and food gatherer. However, present generation is quite well educated and chosen alternative profession for livelihood.
Mothe Shankar who is the grandson of octogenarian Mothe Ramaswamy is a photographer and has his own studio. He is the troupe in charge of Burugupeta Bommalata. Along with him his brothers, cousins and his own son are receiving training from Mothe Yadagiri and Mothe Ramaswamy. They feel the pride of the art form resting with their family which is unique.

Aakruti Kathak Kendra, Hyderabad is delighted to perform at the 8th anniversary of Lamakaan.

Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit word of Katha meaning story.
Kathak is a classical dance form originated in North India, it contains traces of Temple and ritual dances along with certain features of Persian dances.
Intricate footwork and spins, as well as abhinaya, the art of expression, are the highlights of Kathak.

The compositions are based on Traditional and Contemporary music.
The theme of Kathak dance recital is "RANG" where Blue symbolises Water, Green - The Earth, Yellow - sand and Red - Fire.

The dynamic nature of a soil is due to the tremendous activity of micro and macro organisms supported by availability of organic matter. It is this life in the soil that lends its name to the soil as living soil. A vast number of organisms engineer a myriad of biochemical changes as the decay of organic matter takes place in the soil. Among the organisms, which contribute to soil health, the most important are the earthworms. Based on continuous research on earthworms made me write “earthworms are the pulse of the soil, healthier the pulse, healthier the soil”.

The soil is a living dynamic system whose functions are mediated by diverse living organisms which in agriculture requires proper management and conservation. Unfortunately, in today’s chemical agriculture, importance is shown on soil fertility and not on the holistic soil health which provides an integrated sustainable mechanism to the soil to sustain its “living” fabric of nature.
Prof. Sultan Ismail will talk about the myriad of soil organisms, earthworms are one of the most vital components of the soil biota in terms of soil formation and maintenance of soil structure and fertility.

About Sultan Ahmed Ismail: Sultan Ahmed Ismail is an Indian soil biologist and ecologist. His work has centred on techniques for recycling biodegradable waste into fertilizer using local varieties of earthworms, and on soil bioremediation.

Ismail received a D.Sc. in Zoology from the University of Madras in 2001 for his research on the role of earthworms in soil ecology and waste management. He is also the Managing Director of the Ecoscience Research Foundation.

Secular and Traditional Hindustani Music and Poetry by Prof Subendu Ghosh

Prof. Subendu Ghosh takes us on a musical journey through India’s secular traditions of Amir Khusro, Kabir, Tansen, Bulle Shah, Lalan Faqeer, Nazeer Akbarabadi, Tagore, Faiz, Ramprasad Bismil and others. Composed and sung by Subendu, this is a performance of sheer breadth of traditions covered in an evening.

This is a presentation to remind ourselves as we pass through a difficult period of communal tensions and violence, about India’s secular commitment. The people of India have lived in peace and harmony over the ages. Despite differences in religions, they have all contributed to build a very rich and composite culture, and this is beautifully reflected in our literature and music.
This programme is a musical journey through India’s traditions of secular poetry, in a historical order beginning from the 13th century to the present day. Most of the music is composed and sung by Dr. Subhendu Ghosh and is based on Hindustani ragas or other musical forms including the traditional folk songs. The narrative includes a number of historical personalities like Hazrat Amir Khusro, Kabir, Mian Taan Sen, Bulle Shah, Lalan Faqir, Nazeer Akbarabadi, Ramprasad Bismil, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Rabindranath Tagore.
This is a small effort to highlight the poetic genius of our Indian poets and pay our tribute to those who dedicated their lives to a Secular India.

"Hawalalat" Written By Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena, Directed by Subhash GuptaHawalaat’, revolves around the story of three youth who have no place since nobody was ready to offer them the shelter and they thought it proper to have the same in a police lock-up. For this they approached a police cop as criminals. In the beginning the cop is not ready to believe in them and asks them to establish their credentials by demonstrating their expertise and past accomplishments in the word of crime. To avoid them, the cop agrees to take them to the lock-up (Hawalaat) after tying their eyes. On the way they talk about political, ideological and social aspects of life and try to explain to the policemen how, like them he is also a mere pawn in the larger system, but he is not convinced. Instead of taking them the police station, the cop keeps them moving at one cross satire on the exploitation of the youth by the people sitting at the helm of affairs. The cop symbolizes the politicians of this country who have been be fooling the youth since Independence. In a highly intellectual manner the playwright has tried to expose the exploitation of the most energetic age group of the country.

"Marnoprant" written by Surendera Verma, directed by Jay Jha revolves around a triangular love story. The playwright unfolds the whole episode after the death of a young lady whose husband and the lover meet for the first time. Their encounter reveals the minute intricacies of man-woman relations and frustrations of extra marital affairs. Both embarrass each other by revealing the intimate moments they shared with the young lady. The dramatic action becomes even more interesting when it is shown that the husband comes to know about the relation after the death of his wife.

"Banerjee Babu", Written by Avinash Matta, Directed by Jay Jha - Nobody loves him, nobody cares for him. They only remember him when they need him to do some work. He is lonely. All he needs is a hug. Will you give it to him?

With the fascists forces gaining political power and spreading like a virus in the country, it becomes all the more necessary to recollect the sacrifice and message of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

Bhagat Singh was born in Punjab, India (now Pakistan), on September 27, 1907, to a Sikh family deeply involved in political activities. He quit school at thirteen to devote his life to Indian independence. He became involved in several violent demonstrations of political defiance and was arrested several times. Singh was found guilty of killing a British police officer and hanged on March 23, 1931.

Almost 26,500 students committed suicide in the country between 2014 and 2016 as per the official statistics that are recently disclosed by a Rajya Sabha member. Prof Laxminarayana will be speaking at length about the issues pertaining to corporatization and commodification of education. Parents of suicided students will attend the event and share their views.

In times of fascism, caste question has emerged on the national agenda with a renewed emphasis as evident in the wake of some recent incidents such as the institutional murder of Rohith Vemula, Una episode and Bhima Koregaon violence. However, the nature of caste system in modern capitalist era is not the same as the one that prevailed in feudal medieval India or in pre-feudal ancient India. As against the widespread belief, caste system has not remained static throughout history. There have been both temporal and spatial variations. The caste structure in south India is not exactly same as that in north India. The relation between caste and class has also evolved over a period of time. These complexities need to be grasped in order to move towards annihilation of caste. Without having a concrete understanding of the origin, evolution and spatio-temporal variations of caste, no project of annihilation of caste can be devised. Also, it is important to have a critical look at the efforts made in the past towards the annihilation of caste including the anti-caste movements of Ayyankali, Phule, Periyar, Ambedkar and the communist movement. It is because of this reason that Lamakaan is conducting an extensive 3-day long talk series on “Caste: origin, evolution and proposed program for its annihilation”. The talk will be delivered by Abhinav Sinha who is a Marxist theorist and activist. Abhinav has carried out extensive research and study on caste system. The sessions would be organized as follows:

Indian society continues to be characterized by the barbaric caste system even in 21st century. In times of fascism, caste question has emerged on the national agenda with a renewed emphasis as evident in the wake of some recent incidents such as the institutional murder of Rohith Vemula, Una episode and Bhima Koregaon violence. However, the nature of caste system in modern capitalist era is not the same as the one that prevailed in feudal medieval India or in pre-feudal ancient India. As against the widespread belief, caste system has not remained static throughout history. There have been both temporal and spatial variations. The caste structure in south India is not exactly same as that in north India. The relation between caste and class has also evolved over a period of time. These complexities need to be grasped in order to move towards annihilation of caste. Without having a concrete understanding of the origin, evolution and spatio-temporal variations of caste, no project of annihilation of caste can be devised. Also, it is important to have a critical look at the efforts made in the past towards the annihilation of caste including the anti-caste movements of Ayyankali, Phule, Periyar, Ambedkar and the communist movement. It is because of this reason that Lamakaan is conducting an extensive 3-day long talk series on “Caste: origin, evolution and proposed program for its annihilation”. The talk will be delivered by Abhinav Sinha who is a Marxist theorist and activist. Abhinav has carried out extensive research and study on caste system. The sessions would be organized as follows:

A WORKSHOP, April 1, 2018



We swipe, click, switch, flip and surf, following updates, checking alerts and reading forwarded messages. News is everywhere, on every device, all the time. In this hyper-connected news environment, it can be difficult to figure out what is true and what is simply hype, what is fact and what is opinion.



This two-hour interactive workshopwill explore the dynamics of news production, and offer some ideas and tools to sift through the clutter and get to the real stuff. Using current examples and experiences, we will try to answer these and other questions—



1. How do the news media really work?

2. Who (and what) decides what’s news?

3. How do we tell the difference between fact and opinion?

4. What goes into the making of a good news story and how can we identify it?

5. What ethical concerns about the news media should we have as citizens?

6. What alternatives do we have to the big media?



The 2-hour workshop to be conducted by Professors Vinod Pavarala, Usha Raman, and Kanchan K. Malik from the Department of Communication, University of Hyderabad is directed toward college and high school students and young professionals.

Farming Injustice - The impact of Israeli agro-tech in Telangana and Palestine.

Since the 90s Israeli corporations are involved in Telangana’s agriculture. Starting from the Kuppam project in the 90s to the so-called Centers of Excellence to be set up under the Indo-Israeli agricultural project and the recently announced trips for over 1000 agricultural state officials to Israel, ostensibly for training purposes, dozens of crores of public money fund Israeli projects in the state.

This dialogue with farmers from Palestine and Telangana wants to look at the impact of these state sponsored projects on farmers in the state and the Palestinian suffering from Israel’s agricultural policies, central to their dispossession and colonisation. It will relate experiences of struggle against Israel’s corporate takeover of agriculture in other regions of the world.

Women in Resistance in Telangana- Movie Screening and Sharing of Experiences

Bharat Ke Nirmata- Women in Resistance (By Shubham with Media Collective, Delhi) is a film that documents the sharing of challenges, concerns, hopes and dreams of women who were and are part of many people's movements across India.

Through stories, poetry, music and dance, the women narrate their lived experiences of what made them who they are and their struggle with family, society, state, religion and patriarchy.

The event shall begin with the screening of this film be followed by a panel discussion with seven women from different people's movements from Telangana. Every speaker shall speak on three major themes- personal journeys and struggles, their experiences in the immediate political struggle that they are leading or are a part of, and their vision for life and the world.

The film runs for 52 minutes after which the panel members shall speak for ten minutes each followed by an hour long open floor for audience questions and discussions.

Participants will be trained in the following areas.

1. Browsing Anonymously with Tor;
2. Using Encrypted communications platforms like Signal;
3. Using Email encryption;
4. Secure password management;

This workshop will follow a hands-on approach. Participants should bring their laptops and mobile devices.

In the times of Big Data and Internet of Things, digital security has become more significant than ever. Data-driven private giants are rapidly collecting and analyzing vast amounts of personal data belonging to individuals. Every electronic device and service today has the ability to monitor its users’ activities in excruciating detail, spawning an entire industry that treats data as money. As corporations come up with new and inventive ways to monetize personal data, civil liberties such as the right to privacy are often left by the wayside.

In addition, there have been instances where cyber-attacks have compromised highly sensitive personal information on a very large scale (such as the attack on Equifax that leaked social security numbers), proving that cyber-security is no longer a niche area. Increasing reliance on the Internet and smart devices is exposing people to more cyber-security threats, and the problem will only be compounded as technology permeates ever deeper into daily lives.

In this scenario, it is a cause for concern that most users remain unaware of the privacy and security risks that they face on a daily basis, or the nature and extent of damage that stands to be done in consequence.

This 'Digital Security Training’ Workshop is an effort towards raising awareness in this regard and help building digital security of attendees.

This screening is aimed at starting a collectively discussion about some of these questions.

Sandhu grew up hearing his father being called "namard" because he didn't hit Sandhu's schizophrenic mother.

This Screening and discussion is organized by Films & Conversations on Sexualities & Genders (FCSG), in partnership with Queer Campus Hyderabad (QCH) and Anveshi.

Makhdoom, the revolutionary poet, lived in Hyderabad. A progressive writer, a poet of great sensitivity, a revolutionary with deep sensitivity.
Makhdoom’s thoughts and poetics are explored through his poems and ghazals by Hyderabad’s famous ghazal singer, Adnan Salem. The set includes his political poems, love ballads, and ghazals.

Chekka Bommalata of Burugupeta Village, Telangana State
As part of 8th Anniversary Celebration, Lamakaan is organizing Traditional Wooden String Puppetry-Chekka Bommlata or Koyya Bommlata at Lamakaan.

Chekka Bommlata or Koyya Bommlata –String Puppetry is pride of Telangana State. At present two Mothe troupes-One from Ammapuram which is quite well known and second is Burugupeta (lesser known) perform it.

They belong to Beda Budiga Jangam Community. The uniqueness of this Budiga Jangam community is they are good singing, music rendition and in folk art forms. Buduga Jangam is an artistic community which has more than 24 sub communities along with Bommalalollu, Sarada Kala Rupamvalu, Kakipapala, Ganayeti, Mandhechchu, and so on.

However, Buduga is a percussion instrument associated with the narration of Jangam Kathas or Kathalu. This instrument is also known as Buduga, Budiga, Dikki,and Gummeta in Telugu. This Buduga Jangam community is the traditional narrators of stories from mythology, epics, and heroic tales of the region.

They also performed the obsequies rites to the saivites and in return were paid Beda or byada coin by them. So, they are also known as Beda Jangam or Beda Budiga Jangam. 8 Beda or Byada (this is how they pronounce it) is equal to Re-1/- and 16 Ek Anna equals to 8 Bydalu.

Basically, Budiga Jangaluvalu are wandering hunters and food gatherer. However, present generation is quite well educated and chosen alternative profession for livelihood.
Mothe Shankar who is the grandson of octogenarian Mothe Ramaswamy is a photographer and has his own studio. He is the troupe in charge of Burugupeta Bommalata. Along with him his brothers, cousins and his own son are receiving training from Mothe Yadagiri and Mothe Ramaswamy. They feel the pride of the art form resting with their family which is unique.

Aakruti Kathak Kendra, Hyderabad is delighted to perform at the 8th anniversary of Lamakaan.

Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit word of Katha meaning story.
Kathak is a classical dance form originated in North India, it contains traces of Temple and ritual dances along with certain features of Persian dances.
Intricate footwork and spins, as well as abhinaya, the art of expression, are the highlights of Kathak.

The compositions are based on Traditional and Contemporary music.
The theme of Kathak dance recital is "RANG" where Blue symbolises Water, Green - The Earth, Yellow - sand and Red - Fire.

The dynamic nature of a soil is due to the tremendous activity of micro and macro organisms supported by availability of organic matter. It is this life in the soil that lends its name to the soil as living soil. A vast number of organisms engineer a myriad of biochemical changes as the decay of organic matter takes place in the soil. Among the organisms, which contribute to soil health, the most important are the earthworms. Based on continuous research on earthworms made me write “earthworms are the pulse of the soil, healthier the pulse, healthier the soil”.

The soil is a living dynamic system whose functions are mediated by diverse living organisms which in agriculture requires proper management and conservation. Unfortunately, in today’s chemical agriculture, importance is shown on soil fertility and not on the holistic soil health which provides an integrated sustainable mechanism to the soil to sustain its “living” fabric of nature.
Prof. Sultan Ismail will talk about the myriad of soil organisms, earthworms are one of the most vital components of the soil biota in terms of soil formation and maintenance of soil structure and fertility.

About Sultan Ahmed Ismail: Sultan Ahmed Ismail is an Indian soil biologist and ecologist. His work has centred on techniques for recycling biodegradable waste into fertilizer using local varieties of earthworms, and on soil bioremediation.

Ismail received a D.Sc. in Zoology from the University of Madras in 2001 for his research on the role of earthworms in soil ecology and waste management. He is also the Managing Director of the Ecoscience Research Foundation.

Secular and Traditional Hindustani Music and Poetry by Prof Subendu Ghosh

Prof. Subendu Ghosh takes us on a musical journey through India’s secular traditions of Amir Khusro, Kabir, Tansen, Bulle Shah, Lalan Faqeer, Nazeer Akbarabadi, Tagore, Faiz, Ramprasad Bismil and others. Composed and sung by Subendu, this is a performance of sheer breadth of traditions covered in an evening.

This is a presentation to remind ourselves as we pass through a difficult period of communal tensions and violence, about India’s secular commitment. The people of India have lived in peace and harmony over the ages. Despite differences in religions, they have all contributed to build a very rich and composite culture, and this is beautifully reflected in our literature and music.
This programme is a musical journey through India’s traditions of secular poetry, in a historical order beginning from the 13th century to the present day. Most of the music is composed and sung by Dr. Subhendu Ghosh and is based on Hindustani ragas or other musical forms including the traditional folk songs. The narrative includes a number of historical personalities like Hazrat Amir Khusro, Kabir, Mian Taan Sen, Bulle Shah, Lalan Faqir, Nazeer Akbarabadi, Ramprasad Bismil, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Rabindranath Tagore.
This is a small effort to highlight the poetic genius of our Indian poets and pay our tribute to those who dedicated their lives to a Secular India.

"Hawalalat" Written By Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena, Directed by Subhash GuptaHawalaat’, revolves around the story of three youth who have no place since nobody was ready to offer them the shelter and they thought it proper to have the same in a police lock-up. For this they approached a police cop as criminals. In the beginning the cop is not ready to believe in them and asks them to establish their credentials by demonstrating their expertise and past accomplishments in the word of crime. To avoid them, the cop agrees to take them to the lock-up (Hawalaat) after tying their eyes. On the way they talk about political, ideological and social aspects of life and try to explain to the policemen how, like them he is also a mere pawn in the larger system, but he is not convinced. Instead of taking them the police station, the cop keeps them moving at one cross satire on the exploitation of the youth by the people sitting at the helm of affairs. The cop symbolizes the politicians of this country who have been be fooling the youth since Independence. In a highly intellectual manner the playwright has tried to expose the exploitation of the most energetic age group of the country.

"Marnoprant" written by Surendera Verma, directed by Jay Jha revolves around a triangular love story. The playwright unfolds the whole episode after the death of a young lady whose husband and the lover meet for the first time. Their encounter reveals the minute intricacies of man-woman relations and frustrations of extra marital affairs. Both embarrass each other by revealing the intimate moments they shared with the young lady. The dramatic action becomes even more interesting when it is shown that the husband comes to know about the relation after the death of his wife.

"Banerjee Babu", Written by Avinash Matta, Directed by Jay Jha - Nobody loves him, nobody cares for him. They only remember him when they need him to do some work. He is lonely. All he needs is a hug. Will you give it to him?

Bhagat Singh was born in Punjab, India (now Pakistan), on September 27, 1907, to a Sikh family deeply involved in political activities. He quit school at thirteen to devote his life to Indian independence. He became involved in several violent demonstrations of political defiance and was arrested several times. Singh was found guilty of killing a British police officer and hanged on March 23, 1931.

Almost 26,500 students committed suicide in the country between 2014 and 2016 as per the official statistics that are recently disclosed by a Rajya Sabha member. Prof Laxminarayana will be speaking at length about the issues pertaining to corporatization and commodification of education. Parents of suicided students will attend the event and share their views.

Indian society continues to be characterized by the barbaric caste system even in 21st century. In times of fascism, caste question has emerged on the national agenda with a renewed emphasis as evident in the wake of some recent incidents such as the institutional murder of Rohith Vemula, Una episode and Bhima Koregaon violence. However, the nature of caste system in modern capitalist era is not the same as the one that prevailed in feudal medieval India or in pre-feudal ancient India. As against the widespread belief, caste system has not remained static throughout history. There have been both temporal and spatial variations. The caste structure in south India is not exactly same as that in north India. The relation between caste and class has also evolved over a period of time. These complexities need to be grasped in order to move towards annihilation of caste. Without having a concrete understanding of the origin, evolution and spatio-temporal variations of caste, no project of annihilation of caste can be devised. Also, it is important to have a critical look at the efforts made in the past towards the annihilation of caste including the anti-caste movements of Ayyankali, Phule, Periyar, Ambedkar and the communist movement. It is because of this reason that Lamakaan is conducting an extensive 3-day long talk series on “Caste: origin, evolution and proposed program for its annihilation”. The talk will be delivered by Abhinav Sinha who is a Marxist theorist and activist. Abhinav has carried out extensive research and study on caste system. The sessions would be organized as follows:

Day 1. Origin and evolution of caste

Day 2. Critical appraisal of the anti-caste movements of Ayyankali, Phule, Periyar, Ambedkar

Day 3. Marxism and caste question

On each day, the talk will be followed by an interactive session.

What we do, basically: One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring forth a theme and writing exercises. A WORKSHOP, April 1, 2018



We swipe, click, switch, flip and surf, following updates, checking alerts and reading forwarded messages. News is everywhere, on every device, all the time. In this hyper-connected news environment, it can be difficult to figure out what is true and what is simply hype, what is fact and what is opinion.



This two-hour interactive workshopwill explore the dynamics of news production, and offer some ideas and tools to sift through the clutter and get to the real stuff. Using current examples and experiences, we will try to answer these and other questions—



1. How do the news media really work?

2. Who (and what) decides what’s news?

3. How do we tell the difference between fact and opinion?

4. What goes into the making of a good news story and how can we identify it?

5. What ethical concerns about the news media should we have as citizens?

6. What alternatives do we have to the big media?



The 2-hour workshop to be conducted by Professors Vinod Pavarala, Usha Raman, and Kanchan K. Malik from the Department of Communication, University of Hyderabad is directed toward college and high school students and young professionals.
