A Tongue Untied: The Story of Dakhani
2017| Documentary| Dakhani, English|90mins
Dir: Gautam Pemmaraju

Synopsis:

Humour and satire help us tackle tough times and difficult circumstances. A laugh or two eases our burden momentarily. Much needed in today’s troubled world. A Tongue Untied is a film about humour and satire in Dakhani - a vernacular form of Urdu spoken across the Deccan region. Remember the much-loved routines of the Hindi film comic Mehmood? Beyond his antics and other popular caricatures of the quintessential ‘Hyderabadi’, there is so much more than just funny accents and comic sketches.

Parodied and poorly regarded for centuries, Dakhani’s glorious history and rich legacy has been largely ignored. This film takes a close look at the continuing tradition of mazihiya shayri, or humour-satire performance poetry. From the early poets of the modern era such as Nazeer ‘Dahqani’, the badshah of Dakhani mazihiya shayri Sulaiman Khateeb, to the contemporary ones today including the seniors Mohd. Himayatullah and Ghouse ‘Khamakha’, the film looks at the wide range of humourists and satirists.

Including extensive travels across the Deccan plateau, interviews and conversations with poets, mushaira (poetry show) organisers, litterateurs, Sufi scholars, historians, linguists, actors, film directors, lyricists, playwrights, amongst others, the film also simultaneously uncovers the history of the language and of a composite culture.

From early mystical compositions of Sufi settlers of the 14th century, ornate fantasy tales by court poets, to romantic artistic creations of the sultans of the Deccan of the 15 & 16th centuries, the film traces the journey of the language over time till its precipitous fall in the early 18th century. The language is a marker of a great, rich mixed culture or mili-jhuli tehzeeb as it is commonly known; one that reveals the depth and beauty of syncretic Indo-Muslim traditions of central and south India. This is the story of a land, a people and their beloved language. This is the story of Dakhani.

The two main characters are the aristocrats Mirza Sajjad Ali and Mir Raushan Ali who are deeply immersed into playing chess. Their desire for the game destroys the competency of the characters, and makes them irresponsible in their duties towards their families and society. They derive immense pleasure in developing chess strategies and ignore the real life invasion by the British. Their city Lucknow falls to British attackers as they are busy playing a game of chess.

Gauri Lankesh was shot to death by unknown assailants outside her home in Rajarajeshwari Nagar on September 5, 2017. In her passing, many social movements have lost an ally. We lost a shining example of incredible personal courage.  We meet to take her chiding seriously: lest, in our silence, her killers find their strength.

when the collapse of the Soviet Union brought an almost universal exultation in the mainstream press and among political leaders not only was “The enemy gone” but the idea of Marxism was discredited. Capitalism and the: “Free market” had triumphed. Marxism had failed. Marx was truly dead. it important, therefore to make it clear that neither the Soviet Union nor other countries that called themselves “Marxist” but had set up police states represented Marx’s notion of socialism. I want to show Marx angry that his theories had been so distorted as to stand for Stalinist cruelties through this play.

It is set up in the rural backdrop of Rajasthan where the there is a fierce competition amongst few intelligent candidates to become the Sarpanch of Narayanpur and the big shots supporting these candidates is a surprise element for you to guess. Greed and misunderstanding leads to great twists and turns in the story and in no time there is total chaos.

Hyd Liberation Day:Myth/Reality? - A Panel Discussion

Though September 17 passes without much noise every year, the date has immense significance for Hyderabad. Not only does it mark the annexation of the erstwhile state of Hyderabad (which comprised parts of present day Maharashtra and Karnataka) in 1948 with Operation Polo (military action by the Indian government), it also tells us the story of the political unrest that existed between 1947-48 due to the deliberations of Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, with regards to joining the Indian union and also the antecedents of the Razakaars, a militia headed by Kasim Razvi.

This year will mark 69 years of Operation Polo. Given its immense historical significance for Hyderabad and even India, there needs to be a discussion the action by the Indian government, the decisions taken by Osman Ali Khan and Kasim Razvi. The need for it today is even greater with the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding to celebrate September 17 as ‘liberation day’ (from the “tyrannical” Nizam rule, as it claims), which perhaps could not be further away from the truth. The fact remains that the Telangana armed struggle, started by the Communists against the Jaagirdars (land owners), was also a major uprising that the Nizam had to deal with, and was part of the entire episode.
So what exactly happened on September 17 and the three days prior to which Operation Polo had been initiated? Is ‘liberation day’ a valid point to be raised? Or is it just another political ploy for gains?

Bond(ed) Democracy
Wed Sep 20, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
Bond(ed) Democracy: Corporatization of Politics, is this now the 1%’s democracy?

Can the Modi government claim to have a clean corruption free image, when it is surreptitiously passing laws to facilitate corporate funding of political campaigns?

The Finance Bill, 2017 relaxes conditions for corporate funding to political parties. It ensures confidentiality to corporates and removes the limit on corporate funding as regards to proportion of profit previously limited at 7.5 per cent. This means that the companies are now allowed to keep the name of the party they contribute funding to as confidential in their profit and loss account and they can donate as much as they want. This is nothing but a big corporate take over of the political funding.

Are the bonds really as transparent as they are being touted to be? Is this mainstreaming of Hawala?

And there is no limit on the amount of money that can be donated. Along with FCRA amendments allowing foreign companies to donate, you can have any number of multinationals donating any amount of money and public can not know anything about which party got how much from whom. Even before you donate the money, the bonds being bearer bonds can change hands through untrackable cash transactions any number of times. Massive amounts of Black money finds another entry point into the economy. Just because the money is coming from a bank account, it does not make it white forever.

What is worse, is that the government will know who is donating to the opposition, without the opposition even having to declare this. Donors will fear harassment and donations to the opposition parties will dry out. All kinds of black and white money, now gets funnelled from all over the world to the ruling party only.

No resources. No opposition. Perfect way to stay in power and wreck havoc on the country.

The influence of corporates is set to rise exponentially, broadening the already wide gap between the government and the governed.

Now the corporate companies will have increasingly large influence on the political parties and they will be shaping country’s agenda and we the people of India will not even know which company supports which political party.

A report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has revealed that between 2012-13 and 2015-16 the BJP received the maximum amount of donations by corporate houses which amounts to 706 crore while the Congress has received the second highest donations with Rs 198 crore. Now we can certainly relate as how this bill which empowers corporate was passed as a money bill in Lok sabha and who will be the real beneficiaries from it.

In the name of transparency, increasing anonymous corporate funding opens the door for government making policies in favour of the corporate. The policies which are shaped to favour profit making of the corporate are certainly not in favour for the other class in the society which are the farmers, wage labourers, marginalized and the working class in general.

Join us at 7:30pm on 20th September as our panelists, Venkatesh Nayak, Shahid Khan & Rachana Reddy discuss these and other aspects of the electoral bonds.

Karwan-e-Mohabbat a month-long journey across the country, led and conceptualised by activist and author, Harsh Mander, the caravan is a group of 40 people including professors, journalists, artists, students, lawyers and activists, who are traveling across the country to visit families who have survived lynchings.

So far, the caravan has covered parts of Assam, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. The intention of the journey is to meet, listen and express solidarity with families whose members have been lynched and forge links between different communities.

An appeal Harsh Mander has written sharing his reasons, seeking support and funds for the journey contains the following excerpt:

“We need to interrogate the reasons for our silences, for our failures to speak out, and to intervene, when murderous hate is unleashed on innocent lives. We need our conscience to ache. We need it to be burdened intolerably.”

Climate change not a myth
Wed Oct 4, 6:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Council
The speaker suggests that climate change is somewhat more real than Big Foot and Unicorns (unlike what some skeptics would have us believe). This is the speaker's personal journey from the ethics to the science of climate change.

45mins talk + 45mins Q&A

The talk will focus on the issues that reach beyond merely the hard sciences and into the social and economic domains, with their potential to call into question our economic systems and social choices (for example, the link between development and energy consumption). The talk will also explore the importance of the basic sciences in societal development.

Climate change skepticism" is a term that has, unfortunately, been hijacked largely (but not completely) by climate changedenialists. Unfortunate because all scientists may be described as skeptics and scientific progress is fundamentally driven by skepticism. The recent narrative accompanying climate change denialism has obscured the fundamental science on which climate research rests, the massive consensus among climate scientists the world over, and the incontrovertible evidence observations are providing us. What the talk proposes to convey is simple: climate change is real, it's us, it's dangerous, and we can indeed do something about it.

SPEAKER
Chirag Dhara is a physicist and mathematician, and recently concluded his PhD in earth sciences at the Max Planck Institute. His previous work was on foundational quantum physics, specializing in quantum randomness. He is drawn into the field of thermodynamic perspectives on climate, due to his concern about the twin problems of climate change and peak energy.

In our silence, intolerant voices find their strength!

Let them learn to argue in words instead of threats.

Narayanpur ki Ramayan
Sat Sep 16, 7:30 PM
Rangeen Sapney Theatre
Every village has its own Ramayan and so does Narayanpur. The story depicts a political scenario with satirical comedy in a Navtanki form.
In mythological Ramayan hero Ram succeeds evil after the war but in our Narayanpur ki Ramyan who is the hero ? Will there be a war ? and who will succeed? What happens next is something that you have to wait and watch.
This Ramayan revolves around the human virtues and depicts the Raajneeti Nautanki in a witty and ironic way.

Prof Mohan Guruswamy
B. Narsing Rao, Communist Leader
