It is set in the 1930s and involves two peasant women who go into warfare.[1] The cast includes Zhu Xijuan, Wang Xinggang, Xiang Mei, Jin Naihua, Chen Qiang, and Niu Ben.
The Red Detachment of Women became famous after winning the PRC's best script, best director, and best actress awards in November 1961.[2] The film characters of Qiong Hua, Hong Changqing, and Nan Batian became quite well-known and following the success of the Red Detachment of Women ballet in 1964 by the end of 1966 was elevated to one of the eight "revolutionary model theatrical works" (geming yangbanxi, or yangbanxi for short), which formed the official canon.
In 1930s, Wu Qionghua was a housemaid of Nan-ba-tian, a cruel warlord of a village in Hainan Island, China. Often abused by her master, Qionghua was finally rescued by Hong Changqing, leader of the Red Detachment of Women - a troop of women soldiers. A love letter tocinema
Tue Jul 18, 7:30 PM
Rohit/Sasi
Jafar Panahi, one of the contemporary masters of World Cinema from Iran had been imposed with a 20 year ban from film making by the Iranian government in 2007. But Mr. Panahi still managed to make three films viz This Is Not A Film (2011), Closed Curtain (2013) and Taxi Tehran (2015).
And all these three films further explore the docu-fiction style where the lines between documentary and fiction blur so subtly and beautifully. Filmmakers world over, quite a few greats, especially the greats (Orson Welles for instance) have always tried this puzzling technique, trying to throw at the audience something so real that it gets supremely dramatic, otherwise called turning the camera around.Anyways coming to our film - A Love Letter to Cinema, is in a sense a rip off of Taxi Tehran. Panahi's Taxi is about how Panahi disguised himself as a cab driver in Tehran, mounted a camera on his dashboard and went around town for a day, a few of the passengers recognise him, many don't. Panahi's ban and other legal constraints in this scenario kind of push him to make this film in disguise and a camera pointed at life, shooting whatever walks into it.The exciting thing for us when we thought about it, is to put some sort of constraint upon ourselves for the film to look like a blur between what is real and what is staged. And the idea that whatever happens, the camera will never leave the car was the constraint we've imposed upon ourselves and we let the people/actors talk, say whatever, do whatever and the result is the best film we've made so far. Hope you guys love it as much as we do.

Creating a Created Future

Creating a Created Future: The Fundamentals of Transformation
We often despair of creating the future we want to live in. It seems too distant, too tough, and just plain unattainable. We are submerged in so many problems that seem impossible to solve: war, corruption, an unpredictable world economy, mass unemployment, pervasive social malaise, disease, poverty, and the conundrum of our own lives and how to make a difference.
Yet, we desperately want a better present and a better future for our families, our communities, our world, and ourselves.
In this introductory lecture, Professor Michael Leslie outlines how to constitute oneself as the kind of entity who can powerfully call into existence the world we all desire, not by force or cunning, but by the transformation of who we are each being on the planet.
About Professor Michael Leslie
Dr. Michael Leslie has travelled the world in search of the keys to personal and social transformation for over fifty years, conducting research and teaching on five continents, in more than fifteen countries. His abiding scholarly and teaching interest is in the ontology and phenomenology of human transformation and planetary ascendance.
He received his degrees, chronologically, from the University of California at Berkeley; Columbia University in New York; and the University of Washington at Seattle. He is currently a tenured faculty member in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida, where he teaches foundational courses in social responsibility and ethical leadership.
His inspirational book, “How to Get What You Really Want: Lessons from My Life!” is available in English, Mandarin, and Spanish on Amazon.com.

Wed Jul 26, 5:00 PM
Neha Kanitkar
The online media is being increasingly used for hate campaigns to spread misinformation aimed to create distrust and alienation between different communities that result in hostilities and lead to violence. Confederation of Voluntary Associations (COVA) with support from the U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad has created the Countering Online Fanatic Indoctrination (COFI) Network with the aim to enlist persons from different fields well versed in religious and social issues with progressive ideologies as Partners. Through the COFI Network several Digital Literacy and Intervention Techniques Training Programs will be implemented to provide them technical skills and ability in handling a range of social media platforms. Equipped with the required technical skills in handling social media, these persons will then be able to effectively counter online hate propaganda (against different religious groups and communities) in social and mainstream media spaces both as individuals and also through organized groups.
Dr. Mazher Hussain, Founder of COVA, will lead a talk on the journey of designing and creating the COFI Network.

Girl Power Hip Hop and Freestyle
Tue Aug 1, 7:30 PM
Mira Manickam-Shirley
I am an environmental educator, surfer, parkour practitioner, and hip hop artist. My father is from Hyderabad and I was born and raised in the U.S. I will be sharing some of my hip hop music and videos, which celebrate the power of women and girls in surfing and the outdoors. I will be inviting the audience to join in, via a participatory beginners workshop in "freestyling" the art of creating rhymes on the spot, usually to a beat. This workshop is meant for total beginners who find the idea of freestyling to be terrifying, and is ESPECIALLY FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS. We will do exercises to loosen ourselves up, release ourselves from judgment, and HAVE FUN!!!
The global image of U.S. hip hop tends to be of commercial gangster rap, however this is not the full picture. In the big cities in the U.S. local hip hop scenes thrive and musicians and artists (many of them women!) create work relevant to local issues and their community. I would like to share my own work as a San Francisco Bay Area hip hop artist as well as invite the audience to join in the participatory community based spontaneous aspect of hip hop through a freestyle workshop

GST: The Road Ahead
Fri Aug 4, 4:00 PM
Hyderabad Urban Lab
In this talk hosted by Hyderabad Urban Lab, Dr. Amir Ullah Khan, will trace the history of GST and the road ahead. With the rollout of the GST, it is hoped that taxes would be simplified and harmonised. Tax terrorism would get extinguished. It may come at the cost of making India less of a federal state, but the tradeoff could be well worth it. However the beginnings have been rough. Not only is the industry unprepared, it is obvious that the government also is way behind on its preparations. The Telangana CM was the first to have realized that GST will cause distress. He has argued that that several thousands of workers sustain on the beedi industry and as such, imposing excess taxes on the industry will adversely impact the beedi workers. With more than 1,400 commodities that will have to be fitted into the five slabs – zero, 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent, the tax department has its hands full. It has still not decided what to do with sin products where we need to fix special cesses on demerit goods that are now capped at 15 per cent for aerated drinks and luxury cars, and at 135 per cent for pan masala, and 290 per cent or Rs 4,170 per 1,000 sticks for cigarettes. Most items therefore will be fit into the existing VAT scheme. However at the moment, each state differs so much that actual fitments will involve intense lobbying by states. Businesses will start their own lobbying. We may well return to the age old system of business lobbyists using all means possible to get their produce into the lower slabs. The government is staring into a possible embarrassment. Dr. Amir Ulla Khan, the speaker is a development economist who is currently a professor at the Maulana Azad Urdu Unviersity and is no stranger to Hyderabad. He was member of the Telangana commission of inquiry into the socio economic conditions of Minorities. He is on the board of several key institutions of policy research, policymaking and development interventions.

Kamla by Vijay Tendulkar
Fri Aug 4, 7:30 PM
Kissago Theatre and Film Production Group
Kamla by Vijay Tendulkar is a naturalistic play. It focuses on the changed role of women in society. It was inspired by a real-life incident - the Indian Express exposure by Ashwin Sarin, who actually bought a girl from a rural flesh market and presented her at a press conference. But using this incident as a launching pad, Tendulkar raises certain cardinal questions regarding the value system of a modern success-oriented generation who are ready to sacrifice human value in the name of humanity itself. The playwright exposes the innate self-deception of this standpoint. It is the story of an unfortunate woman sold away in the flesh market and a so-called happy housewife married to a daring journalist, both having a revelation of finding themselves on the common platform of sexual slavery in this male-dominated world. Directed by - Subhash Gupta Cast - Kajol Dubey | Shailja Chaturvedi | Sumam Philip | Subhash Gupta | Sanjeev Acharya | Jay Jha Contact# 970007479 || Passes - 200/-
