by
Gautam Bhatia

Gautam Bhatia is a practicing lawyer in Delhi, Visiting Faculty at West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata and author of the book Offend, Shock or Disturb: Free Speech under the Indian Constitution, 2016.
Date & Time: 17 June, 6pm
Venue: Lamakaan
The talk is being organized by Citizens for Inclusive Education (CIE) to understand the politics of defamation and its deployment against protest and dissent in the university. Several of you may remember that five students from English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad, were convicted for six months in a defamation case brought against them by a faculty member. The Magistrate Court weaved together a problematic matrix of malicious and unruly students requiring discipline, of the University space as being sacred and neutral, and most importantly, that protest against discrimination is defamation.
The print media and some of the online media have celebrated the verdict, as a much-needed action against violent students from OBC, Dalit and Tribal backgrounds, who in the name of fighting for social justice are actually disrupting the “normal” university life. Against this verdict of the Magistrate's Court, the students have appealed to the Session's court which will shortly hear the matter.
We invite journalists, students, teachers, lawyers, activists and well-wishers to participate in the discussion and voice your concerns to save the right to freedom of expression, democratic values and human rights in higher educational institutions.

The Gate of Heavenly Peace
3h | Documentary | 1995
Directors: Richard Gordon, Carma Hinton

The Gate of Heavenly Peace is a three-hour documentary film about the 1989 protests at Tiananmen Square, which culminated in the violent government crackdown on June 4. The film uses archival footage and contemporary interviews with a wide range of Chinese citizens, including workers, students, intellectuals, and government officials, to revisit the events of “Beijing Spring.” From the beginning of the protests in mid-April to the night of June 3–4, the film provides a “meticulous day-by-day chronicle of the six-week period… This unglamorous but absorbing film interweaves videotaped scenes of the demonstrations and conversations with leaders and participants with an explanatory narration into an account that is as clear-headed as it is thorough and well-organized.”[1]

Among those interviewed are Liu Xiaobo, Wang Dan, Wuer Kaixi, Han Dongfang, Ding Zilin, Chai Ling, Dai Qing, Feng Congde, and Hou Dejian.

In addition, The Gate of Heavenly Peace examines the deeper history behind the demonstrations, providing historical and cultural context for the famous images that the Western media flashed around the world. The film explores the symbolic importance of Tiananmen Square and also looks at earlier political movements in China from the May Fourth Movement of 1919 to the Cultural Revolution of 1966-76 to the Tiananmen Incident of 1976. In so doing, the film considers the ways in which the political habits and attitudes that came to inform public life in China over the past century also shaped the events of 1989.

Pauline Chen writes: “The Gate of Heavenly Peace illuminates how images of these movements, filtered and refracted through propaganda, emotion, and imperfect memory, provided inspiration and models for the participants, both students and government, in the 1989 events. The students thought they were emulating the May 4 leaders, forgetting that those students returned to school and worked for more gradual social change after successfully drawing attention to China's political and social problems. To some Communist Party members, however, the 1989 mass student demonstrations may have chillingly recalled the chaos and terror of the Cultural Revolution. Both the Cultural Revolution and the 1976 Tiananmen Incident attest to how extremists have used popular uprisings as excuses to get rid of their moderate rivals; the 'reactionary' Deng Xiaoping, who favored greater economic freedom, was blamed by Mao for the 1976 Tiananmen Incident and forced from his position. Unfortunately, today's hard-liners have also learned the lesson from these events. The moderate reformers Zhao Ziyang and Yan Mingfu, China's best hope for democratic reform, were ousted from power following the June 4 crisis.”

Breaking with Old Ideas

To commemorate the 50 years of Cultural Revolution in China, Lamakaan brings to you this finest film.

Entry Free. All are Welcome!!

Breaking With Old Ideas (1975)
Made in China during the Cultural Revolution, dramatizing the struggle for proletarian control of education at an agricultural college during the Great Leap Forward (1958-1959). Makes it clear that leading party members can still promote bourgeois ideas and only the masses can rectify these leaders (or remove them if necessary)to ensure that education truly helps to build socialism. An excellent introduction to the politics of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural
Revolution. Full of concrete examples of how class struggle continues under socialism and how communists can wage that struggle successfully: by mobilizing the masses to criticize those in positions of authority taking the capitalist road.

Mah Laqa Bai Chanda
Fri Jun 30, 7:30 PM
Sutradhar
Mah Laqa Bai Chanda was an 18th century Urdu poet and the first woman to
have a diwan (anthology) of her work. A multi-faceted personality renowned
for her multi-lingual skills, mellifluous voice and dancing, she was also an
accomplished archer and horse woman. Known to be brave, she participated in
all the three wars fought by Nizam Ali Khan, Asaf Jah the II. The Nizam
conferred upon her the title of Mah Laqa ,
meaning Visage of the
Moon along with the jagir or estate of Adikmet and other honours. Mah Laqa
Bai Chanda was a powerful woman in the court of the second and third Nizams
of Hyderabad as she was frequently consulted by the rulers on policy
matters. She was admitted into the omrah, the elite nobility and was the
only woman to have been awarded this status.

Mah Laqa Bai Chanda was a socially conscious and enlightened woman who
returned her debt to society by establishing a residential institution to
provide less privileged girls educational opportunities and impart cultural
training , a
concept unique for those times.

This is perhaps the first time that a theatrical performance on the
legendary woman is being performed and is intended to bring to life
Hyderabad’s
most famous woman and acknowledge her
immense
contribution to Hyderabad’s
rich legacy.

Spontaneity… Empathy… Expressions … these are slowly losing their valuable space in both in adults and children.. Fear of future … status… … A strong sense of pride and image .. and chains of comparisons are stifling most of the children who hardly get a space where they can be themselves without the compulsions of judgments and they are growing up to be kiddults and then reaching adulthood quite fast before their age. And somewhere in the race of becoming an adult they are losing touch with the child within them This workshop on creative writing will give many opportunities to you and your child to go deep within the levels of your imagination and discover the unique person that you are Who can do this workshop ? 7-13 years of age… How many session ? 2* 2 hours And why ? - If you feel the strong need to dialogue with your creative self - If you want to explore the magic of writing/ drawing/movement/music - If you want to go on an adventure trip to find the hidden world of ideas, thoughts, feelings within you Then please join us… The journey of self-discovery does not stop with being a child. In fact, adults need it more as they consciously, unconsciously or sub-consciously internalize many external patterns/ ideas /images and somewhere forget connecting to one’s own self… How will we do it ? Through dialogues, discussions, writing, drawing, meditation, movements, music … You need to bring few pages perhaps a notebook will be better… colour pencils , pencil and a pen…. So come and be a part of this adventure trip into your own world of ideas.. thoughts and images. 😊

Stryro Engraving Printing will be conducted by Hobbylu - Hobby Discovery Platform for children.
It is an art form where an artist creates an image using one material (we will use foam sheet) carving lines into that material base. This is called relief printing. Once the lines have been created, the artist then puts dye or paint over the material base using a special brush, carefully flips the material base over onto another material (usually paper) and presses down hardly on the base to make an impression. The artist lifts the base off the paper, leaving one print behind.

Invite you to a talk on
Negotiating a Colonial Legacy: Criminal Defamation and the Constitution
by
Gautam Bhatia
