The university and the punitive imagination
This is a panel discussion, the first in a series of events planned by the Lamakaan Programming Council broadly titled the 21st century Indian university. Ever since Rohith Vemula's tragic suicide, Lamakaan has been attempting to organize discussions around the role of public universities in our city with a focus on the lived experience, particularly those self identifying as Dalit-Bahujans. Among other things, we are dismayed at the a regularity with which a significant number of these students appear to be subjected to punitive action ostensibly for a variety of minor and major offences. Some times punishment is delivered through official and formal mechanisms, but as testimonies reveal, the official punishment is only the culmination of daily abuse and humiliation that is not easy to capture in words or images. These experiences point to a deeper malaise in the public university system. Lamakaan series on the 21st century Indian University brings together panel discussions and lectures to open up conversations about this crisis from multiple perspectives. The discussions are curated so as to facilitate action to claim the public university for its primary stakeholders - students from excluded identities.
In this first panel discussion, Prof. Susie Tharu, Prof. Amita Dhanda and Dr. Anant Maringanti will reflect on how disciplinary action is used in universities from the point of view of teachers and administrators. Each of them brings to the discussion, years of experience in teaching and mentoring students. Prof. Dhanda in addition, brings to the table her expertise in adminisitrative law.

Songs of Kabir and other Saint-Poets
by Vipul Rikhi
Vipul will share some of the musical and poetic treasures he has encountered during his journeys into the folk oral traditions of Bhakti, Sufi and Baul poetry. He will present folk songs from Malwa (Madhya Pradesh), Rajasthan, Kutch (Gujarat) and Bengal, which speak with startling clarity, and yet with great feeling, about the fundamental truths of human life, in the voices of Kabir and other poets such as Gorakhnath, Dharamdas, Shah Latif, Bulleshah and others.
Vipul Rikhi is a poet, fiction writer, translator and singer. His work with Kabir Project includes extensive writings and translations in the field of Bhakti, Sufi and Baul poetry. In the course of these journeys he has developed a deep love for singing mystic poetry in the folk music traditions. In his satsangs and performances, he likes to bring equal emphasis to the poetry and its resonances in our lives as to the sheer beauty and simplicity of many of the folk tunes. He is also the author of a novel and collections of poetry and short stories. www.ishqfakiri.com
What were the objectives of this major disruption? Have the objectives been achieved?
Could the objectives of rooting out black money and counterfeit currency been realised differently and with less pain?
What lies ahead now that the process of demonetisation has been completed?
The book 'Demonetisation and Black Money' by Rammanohar Reddy asks these questions and offers answers.
Kingshuk Nag would be in conversation with Rammanohar Reddy to discuss this book.
Todd Vickers author of The Relevance of Kabir will speak on Ambedkar’s birthday about the hope of a better world, two paths to change. He will discuss the similarities and differences between Ambedkar and Kabir.
In every culture there exists its highest contribution to humanity and also social diseases in the form of poisonous beliefs. It is a rare person who can apply an antidote to poisonous beliefs in the face of cultural pressures. Kabir and Ambedkar are two such people. Both were born into the lower strata of society, both dared to challenge the existing order for the sake of a better world.
They were from dramatically different eras and their approach quite distinct, one analytic and the other intuitive, but they agreed in challenging the religious social order and they opposed some of the same beliefs.
Gummadi Prabhakar, Aruna Gogulamanda, Jupaka Subhadra, and others will be sharing their works with us.
People from different places, walks of life and lines of thought come together to share, collaborate and learn.
Hackers talk code. Artists share their creativity. Students join in from schools and colleges to learn new skills. Locals and globals mix and mingle. We build things like tables, hula hoops, interactive art installations, and solar lanterns. We connect. We dance and sing. Ideas emerge. Collaborations form. Lives change.
In the hacking, we get hacked ourselves.

With the current trends in technology and increased importance being given to Arts in combination with technology, we introduce the STEAM based Crafts and Bots workshop for little innovators this summer.
Crafts and Bots is a combination of Craft work and Robotics. Here the students will be encouraged to think out of the box and develop gadgets and models using things around them like cardboard and thermocol in combination with EtchBricks. EtchBricks are Electronic building blocks which can be plugged in to each other to build amazing interesting projects without the need for programming, soldering or any prior knowledge in electronics.
Using EtchBricks anyone can build projects without the need of a computer. Instead children will be building a very small computer of their own which takes inputs and gives relevant outputs. This circuit in combination with Arts and Crafts help students build amazing models. With the simplicity of building projects, children as young as 7+ years can build, make and innovate amazing creations using EtchBricks.
The one day summer workshop will have the following impact on students.
1. Students will be taught, how the basic gadgets around them work.
2. How we can make gadgets of our own using the material around us in combination with EtchBricks using concepts of STEAM which is Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.
3. Students will be encouraged to think on their own and build projects in teams, which will put their creative thinking, group activity and problem solving skills to use.
4. With just a short term workshop, students will gain confidence that they can build interesting projects using things around them.
5. This experience will help them think differently and make contribution to various national level science fairs along with students from various other schools.

Documentary|88Mins|English,Hindi,Nepali
In the Jaintia Hills of Northeast India, boys and men descend into the abyss of the 'rat-holes' to scratch coal out of hard rock, with nothing more than a pickaxe and a head-torch. One of them is Suraj, an 11-year old boy. Born in the mines to Nepali immigrants, Suraj cherishes the hope of getting out of the coal-pit someday. With his mother no more, an unsupportive father and no place he can call home, the odds are stacked against him. And yet, he battles to eventually put himself in school. The film follows Suraj through his tumultuous journey, while revealing startling stories and lives under unusual - perhaps extraordinary - circumstances.

Increasingly this experience is marked by a lot of disillusionment, dissatisfaction, (sometimes immense) stress and pointlessness with most of the "educational" institutions. We try to fix it usually in two ways – either changing the school or college ,or trying to ‘fix” the learner and getting her or him to “cope” - with tuition, extra coaching and sometimes counselling. Very often these are stop-gap fixes, which don't work and never take away the dissatisfaction we feel with these experiences deep down.
Conversations on Education is planned as a series of dialogical events to together explore the idea of education and its connection to our lives, aspirations, notions of work/employment and also engage with the implications of this with our own predicaments as learners, parents, teachers or even employers. We also hope to explore the possibilities available through more convivial educational opportunities/options available.
The event on 18th is a first of these series and will begin with screening a short movie to trigger off a discussion and enable us to connect.
You keep the cows tail, Give us Our Land
Raising the slogan of land rights in response to a brutal attack on Dalit youth in Gujarat, the Una Attached Land Samiti, transformed a moment of protest into a mobilization for justice and concrete rights. At the centre of this remarkable mobilization was a young lawyer and firebrand organizer - Jignesh Mevani. In a fierce four month mobilization the Samiti and Jignesh opened up a vision for a renewed and militant Dalit movement in India. Can Una spread across India?

All of us love farming and wish to own a land however we cannot quit our jobs right away to take full time farming. Buying a farm land is not as easy as buying a real-estate plot. Sometimes we don't find the right size of land that we want to take. Sometimes the legalities of the documents are not clear, right soil , approach roads, workforce management etc are real time challenges.
Coz of all this issues we end-up not taking farm lands.
We formed this group, keeping all this in mind. As a group it becomes easy and economically viable to own and manage a farm.
One night. One long, sleepless, rainy night. Was it a dream?

What do a 5th CE Chera prince turned Jain monk from Kochi Kerala, a 15th century gemstone merchant turned mystic from Karnataka and a 19th century firebrand revolutionary from Ettayapuram Tamil Nadu, have in common? What was it that united poets, mystics and thinkers in the Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam languages over the last two millennia? The answer lies in Bhakti, or Love of the Divine. Experience this Unity through songs of devotion composed by these timeless poets, set to music in the Southern Indian Carnatic style and presented by classical Vocalist Ragavan Manian.

creator, sustainor and destroyer. The remover of despair and giver of all goodness. It follows by tracing the origins of Sita through the story of Ravana as told in the Adbuta Ramayana. This arc traces the arrogance of Ravana and his a boon that he will only die when he unknowingly lusts for his
own daughter and how Mandodari unwittingly becomes pregnant and aborts the baby and hides it in the land of Kurushetra, this aborted child is Sita who has been born as the embodiment of the devi the
female power destined to spell the end of Ravana’s reign of terror. The performance then moves on to the discovery of Sita by Janaka and her precocious childhood. It describes how even as a child she was so powerful that she could pick up Shiva’s bow playfully. This prompts Janaka to decide that whoever marries Sita must be her equal and organize her swayamwara accordingly.Rama’s encounter with this beautiful princess comes next in a piece taken from Ram Charit Manas where Rama describes how spellbound he is with Sita’s beauty when he first encounters her.
The next act takes us to the debate between Sita and Ravana in Ashok Vaatika in a piece taken from
Valmiki Ramayana, here instead of being cowed down by terrifying presence of Ravana she advises him
to mend his ways. The performance concludes with another piece from Adbuta Ramayana. When she is
asked to prove her purity, Sita challenges Rama to kill the thousand headed Ravana of Pushkar without
defeating whom the victory would be incomplete. As Rama battles with the Pushkara Ravana he is
overwhelmed and swoons in this battle. She grasps Rama's bow and arrow, and assumes the terrible
form of Devi.
