Mizaaj e Manto
Sat Mar 11, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan

Saadat Hasan Manto's two short plays 1. KHOL DO is one of the most famous and controversial stories by writer Saadat Hasan Manto (1912-1955) . It is one of the masterpiece depicting the effects of violence during the partition of India on the people of the land. But unlike many others, Manto does not see the perpetrators as Hindu or Muslim, Hindustanis or Pakistanis, he just sees and depicts them as human beings with all their wilderness and barbarity.

UPAR, NICHAY AUR DARMIYAN
Even sixty years after it was written, ‘On Top, Under and In Between’ (‘Upar, neechay aur darmiyan’), a story by the Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto that invited the ire of a young Islamic Republic of Pakistan, brings to mind the perversity and complexity of free-speech controversies in India today. The story actually features one of Manto’s most discreet fictional narrators, almost proving that censors have much more lurid imaginations than the artists whom they would suppress.

Entry Free & Open To All!

Raising Men by Gauri Adelkar, 33 minutes

Short Films produced by School of Media and Cultural Studies, TISS, Mumbai

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Synposes of Films that would be screened :

1. Mardistan / Macholand

A frequently asked question leaves filmmaker Harjant Gill fumbling. An Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Towson University in Maryland, USA, he often finds himself standing in front of a frowning face that wants to know, “What is wrong with Indian men, why are they raping their women?” To give an answer, one would have to wade through a quagmire of socio-cultural history that informs, and complicates, what being a man in India means. Gill decided on a more direct approach — he had four men face the camera and describe their ideas of masculinity.

Mardistan is an exploration of Indian manhood articulated through the voices of 4 men from different generations and backgrounds. A middle-aged writer trying to make sense of the physical and sexual abuse he witnessed studying in an elite military academy, a Sikh father of twin daughters resisting the pressure to produce a son, a 20-year old college student looking for a girlfriend with whom he can lose his virginity and a working-class gay activist coming out to his wife after 20 years of marriage. Together, their stories make up different dimensions of what it means to be a man in India today. The film starts a conversation on critical issues including patriarchy, son-preference, sexual violence and homophobia in a nation increasingly defined by social inequalities.

2. Ozhivudivasathe Kali ( ‘Off-day game’)

Ozhivudivasathe Kali is based on the best seller short story with the same name by Unni R. and has won the Best Film and the Best Sound Recordist Award at the 46th Kerala State Film Awards. The movie was also selected as the best Malayalam film at the International Film Festival of Kerala in 2015.

‘Ozhivudivasathe Kali’ narrates the story of five friends from varied backgrounds, who on a rain-soaked assembly election day in Kerala escape their usual routine for a booze party in a guest house deep in the jungles. Their only intention is fun and merriment. During the course of the day, they start to open up the hidden wildness of their real nature. Tired and bored in arguments, they plan to play a game they used to play in their childhood. The Director has powerfully portrayed the direct and subtle layers of gender-caste-class biases and their inter-sectionality in the film. The film reflects the social realities in both its microcosm and macrocosm.

3. Yuva Maitri : Young Men Breaking the Moulds

MAVA has been running an innovative Program among young men in 9 districts of Maharashtra state. The Youth Program - Gender Sensitization and Mentoring Initiative among college-going young men is first of its kind in India. Using out-of-the box methods, hundreds of youths are engaged and mentored on a wide range of gender and sexual health matters, promoting gender-sensitive behaviour. The Program began in August 2006 as 'Yuva Maitri '(meaning Friendship Amongst Youths') in Pune district with 33 mentees and has been gradually up-scaled to 8 newer districts of Maharashtra, mentoring hundreds of young men in their twentees.. This documentary highlights the innovative tools used at the Youth Program and its impact.

4. Sundar

Sundar (meaning Beautiful) speaks about freedom of expression and freedom of living in a society the way one wants! It talks about Indian taboos that suppress a person and snatch away his basic right of choosing his own path to live.

And this is what our film’s protagonist faces after he cross-dresses on Navaratri. The story is about a person who wants to just express his feelings that wouldn’t hurt anyone ever! It’s about him living his happiness. It’s about letting people be the way they want to be. And finally it’s about appreciating people for what they are, and not for what you want them to be. It’s a story, born in our own land; and then re-written many times in lives of uncountable cross-dressers.

5. Why Loiter? - A Bombay Film Factory Special

Imagine our streets full of women talking, strolling, laughing and gesticulating. Imagine parks and beaches dotted with young women sitting alone contemplating the setting sun. Imagine street corners taken over by older women reflecting over the state of the world. Imagine maidans occupied by women domestic workers planning their next strike for a raise in minimum wage. If one can imagine all of this, one can imagine a radically altered city. Shilpa Phadke, Sameera Khan and Shilpa Ranade present an original take on the meaning and implications of women’s safety in twenty-first century India.

The authors argue that though political and economic visibility has brought women increased access to urban public space, this has not automatically translated into greater claim to public space for them.

Based on more than three years of research in Bombay, this book not only maps women’s exclusion from several public spaces, but also attempts to understand how women from different localities, classes and communities negotiate with real and implied risks of being in public everyday. It further suggests that women’s access to public space cannot be seen in isolation from the access available to other marginal groups.

Inspired by this book, Neha Singh a Bombay based actor decided to loiter with her friends to reclaim public spaces in the city.

6. Broken Image

When in front of a tragedy, would you rather film it or prevent the tragedy from happening? There is a thin fine line that separates basic humanity and a material value for certain people. This line is blurred and unclear to many. A photographer is placed in a moral choice between stopping a tragedy or rather shooting it, at those certain moments certain moral values seem to become blurred when in need for a material raises as a greater priority.

7. Raising Men

The film covers the notable work done with adolescent boys and young men, on issues of Gender and Masculinity, by Men Against Violence and Abuse (MAVA). A glimpse of the work gives the viewer the hope and reassurance that Men can be part of the solution to end gender-based discrimination and violence against women.

Harish Sadani has been passionately running multi-sector developmental programs on gender and health, for over 26 years.
He is a founder-member and Chief Functionary of Men Against
Violence and Abuse (MAVA), India’s first organization of sensitive
and concerned men working since 1993 to stop and prevent

Harish, who has done his Masters in Social Work from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, has been engaging and mentoring thousands of adolescent boys and young men across Maharashtra state to communicate with peers on healthy relationships, masculinity and sexuality-related matters, using out-of- the-box methods.

Geography, Cosmos and the clash of indigenous and colonial knowledge systems
Taking Gurajada Appa Rao's seminal Telugu plays Kanyasulakam and Kondubhatteeyam as a starting points, Dr Srinivas takes us through an exciting journey on how the earth's geography and the cosmos were imagined, felt and portrayed in our literature, art and sculpture through centuries and how the modern scientific outlook ushered in by British colonial education system created enormous controversy and discussion, awe and surprise which lasted for nearly a century, before that outlook or a big part of it became part of our own culture and existence.

“The City Improvement Board and theMaking of Twentieth Century Hyderabad City”

The talk will examine the role onecritical urban institution played in the shaping of the city ofHyderabad in the twentieth century. The Hyderabad City ImprovementBoard (CIB) was created in 1912 by the Nizam's Government in the wakeof two catastrophic events that struck residents and spaces of theold walled city – 1908 Musa flood, and 1911 plague epidemic. TheBoard's administrators and engineers drew ideas and strategies forurban development from similar bodies in British India, the UK, andelsewhere. From the 1920s into the 1940s, the CIB intensivelyreshaped housing, roads, industry, public spaces, and the overallspatial layout and population distribution of the city. Theinstitution was converted into the AP Housing Board after 1956. Intoday's Hyderabad, it is a distant memory, but the CIB in its heydaypioneered many important urban initiatives. The talk will be ofinterest to people who wish to explore and reflect upon Hyderabad'surban history.

FailFest is a fun and engaging forum to celebrate and honor stories of valor, resilience and success & learnings from failure. FailFest is a platform for learning, through experiences. Speakers come and share their extraordinary experiences (learnings) with a compelling storyline at the event. FailFest is an initiative to change the conversation around Failure. In short, it is all about celebrating lessons from Failure to inspire stories of success. It is about emphasizing on the learnings from failure and celebrating them, instead of treating them as unfortunate setbacks. It is with this spirit and intention that FailFest 1.0 was held in May 2013. It was a fun and engaging forum to celebrate and honour stories of failure by highlighting its learning, valour and resilience. FF explored this grey zone by calling upon some indomitable souls from all walks of life- from book authors and actors to techies and entrepreneurs who shared moving stories of their rise, from the trenches of failure. FailFest 2.0 was held in June 2014 and met with resounding success.

Prisoners of Conscience

Dir: Anand Patwardhan

June 26, 1975 is remembered as a black day for Indian democracy. On this day, 36 years back, the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, declared a state of national emergency, thereby granting her extraordinary powers to rule by decree; which was promptly followed by launching a massive crackdown on civil liberties and on all political opposition.

An important historical record of this dark period in India's post-independence political history, Anand Patwardhan's "Prisoners of Conscience" documents the State of Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi from June 1975 to March 1977.

During the Emergency the media was muzzled, over 100,000 people were arrested without charge and imprisoned without trial. Cases of custodial torture, beatings and death were a plenty. Repression was also unleashed on defenceles people - workers, peasants and middle class - outside of jails.

But political prisoners existed before the Emergency, and they continue to exist after it was over. Today, the common people of India witness a state of 'undeclared emergency' as the Indian state holds tens of thousands of political prisoners behind bars, often for years without trial, and employing an arsenal of infamous and heavily criticized draconian acts, some of the most repressive of which are the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), the Public Safety Act (PSA) in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act (CSPSA), the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), the colonial era Sedition Law, etc.

Mahua Workshop
Sun Apr 2, 11:00 AM
Aparna Pallavi
Mahua, illuppai in Tamil, is a tree unique to the Indian subcontinent. It has long been reversed as sacred by indigenous populations for the food it yields. Mahua flowers, delicious and sweet like raisins, have been a staple food for several months a year. Mahua fruits are consumed as a vegetable and the oil from the seeds is consumed as well.

In modern times however, these food traditions have all but disappeared. Mahua trees have disappeared large scale from all parts of India, and are surviving only in the forests where the indigenous populations have protected them.

About the workshop:

The workshop will feature a talk by facilitator Aparna Pallavi on the significance of mahua and other indigenous forest foods in our ecology and our lives, and strategies for bringing this food back into our lives in a sustainable way. Aparna will also demonstrate several simple tribal dishes made from mahua that are easy to incorporate into our household food.

Who it is for :

For anyone interested in tasty, nutritious and sustainable food, and in discovering and reviving lost food traditions.

About Aparna Pallavi:

Aparna is a former environment journalist who has written extensively about indigenous food based on two decades of experience with India's indigenous tribals.

Since March 2016, she is on a gift culture journey across India rediscovering the lost food traditions around Mahua. Last year she travelled in 11 states, and this year she is starting her journey from Tamilnadu. She is also working on a blog and a book on the subject of wild foods.

Participation:

Aparna holds her workshops in the spirit of gift, so participants are welcome to contribute as they choose for the continuation of her work. However, for some ease in meeting her needs, Aparna suggests a minimum contribution of Rs 500 per participant. This, however, is not hard and fast. Participants are welcome to pay less or more

He is a founder-member and Chief Functionary of Men Against
Violence and Abuse (MAVA), India’s first organization of sensitive
and concerned men working since 1993 to stop and prevent
gender-based violence on women.

About the speaker:
Srinivas Sistla (b.26-08- 1962) completed B.Com. at the Hindu College, Guntur, B.F.A. (Art History) at CAVA, Mysore, and M.F.A. (Art Criticism) at the College of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda. At present Sistla is working as Associate Professor in art history and aesthetics in the Department of Fine Arts, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.
