Intro to Mathematical Thinking
Sun Mar 13, 11:00 AM
Krishna Chaitanya
Welcoming parents, students, adults to an "Introduction to mathematical thinking" - a lecture by Krishna Chaitanya, an IIT graduate. This session is free for all.

Lecture description:
1. Do you ever wonder if your school math has a purpose, or do you (secretly) think that it’s just a pointless game of numbers, strange symbols and tips/tricks/methods that you’re supposed to learn and vomit in exams without ever knowing why?

2. Do you see problem solving as a gift of chance or a genetically inherited ability, or are you open to considering that it can be learnt?

3. And finally, have you wondered how exactly scientists, mathematicians and engineers in the real world go about solving problems?

If these and related questions bother/interest you or your child, then this lecture is perfect for you. It will introduce mathematical thinking, which is quite distinct from mathematics as you know it, and you will understand why it is smarter to cultivate mathematical thinking rather than to work hard at your math only to forget everything after school closes. You will get a taste of mathematical thinking through carefully designed interactions and activities.

Lecture duration: 2 hours

Lecture format: Interactive, activity based
Intended audience: Parents along with their children preferably aged 10-18 yrs, or any other interested participants

Material required to make most out of this lecture: Each participant to bring a plain paper notebook (no ruled books, laptops or tabs, please!) and pens of 3 different colours of their choice.

All are welcome and Entry- Free.

KHEL : Humorous skits by KOLAMs
Thu Mar 17, 6:00 PM
Lamakaan's 6th Anniversary week-long celebrations
In the week of Lamakaan's 6th Anniversary 'Kolaam' tribals of Gauri village from the highlands of Adilabad district will present riproaring humorous skits (‘Khel’) which are traditionally performed as ‘breaks’ during the intensely colorful and religious annual Dandaari festival of Gonds and Kolaams!

Thurday 17th March at 6pm, these Gond artists will regale us with humourous depiction of their life in various skits speaking in Gondi, Telugu, Hindi and sometimes without any language - complete with props and costumes.

The Adivasis of Adilabad district show their ‘khel’, a comic interlude during the Dandari/Ghusadi dance at Gowri Kolamguda in Jainoor annually, the topic of which revolves around their lives and its concerns generally.

These Adivasis have a subtle way of doing things, including introduction of social messages in the stream. Their current concerns are highlighted through comic skits which come as interludes during their traditional dances in the Ghusadi dance festival.

The topic changes every year in tune with their current worries and the players do not work hard on it. The skit emerges almost spontaneously.

The Gondi people are a Dravidian people of central India, spread over the states of Madhya Pradesh, eastern Maharashtra (Vidarbha), Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Western Odisha. With over ten million people, they are the largest tribe in Central India. They speak Koithur, Telugu mainly.

This event is curated and brought in by Sumanaspati Reddy who will be narrating the concept in English.

All are weclome.

An evening with Rahul Bose
Fri Mar 18, 6:30 PM
Lamakaan's 6th Anniversary Celebrations
Rahul Bose inhabits three worlds, all of which would be full, rich careers to pursue on their own - as an actor-director (he is in the process of finishing his second feature film after a hiatus of 15 years), an international rugby player (he represented India for 11 years from 1998-2009) and as a social activist (his NGO, The Foundation, turns 10 this year). What lessons in leadership and team building has he learnt from these worlds? Do lessons learnt in one 'life' help in another of his 'lives'? Or are life experiences in each aspect unique and impermeable to any osmosis from the other two? In a talk peppered with incredibly unique lived experiences, sharp insights and off kilter humour, Rahul says it the way we have grown to be accustomed to from him - with passion, honesty and no artifice.

Welcome to Lamaakan for an evening with Rahul Bose who joins us on our 6th Anniversary celebrations to share with us a few Practical and workable principles of leadership garnered by him through coaching and captaining a rugby team, helming an NGO and producing and directing films.

Welcome to Shelbyville - A Film
Sat Mar 19, 5:30 PM
Public Affairs Section - U.S. Consulate General Hyderabad
Inviting all for an evening of film screening of "Welcome to Shelbyville" - a glimpse of America at crossroads.

In this one small town in the heart of America's Bible Belt, a community grapples with rapidly changing demographics. Just a stone's throw away from Pulaski, Tennessee, longtime African American and white residents are challenged with how best to integrate with a growing Latino population and the more recent arrival of hundreds of Muslim Somali refugees.

Set on the eve of the 2008 Presidential election, the film captures the interaction between these residents as they navigate new waters against the backdrop of a tumultuous year. The economy is in crisis, factories are closing, and jobs are hard to find. The local Tyson chicken plant is hiring hundreds of new Somali refugees, and when a local reporter initiates a series of articles about the newcomers, a flurry of controversy and debate erupts within the town.

Just as the Latino population grapples with their own immigrant identity, African American residents look back at their segregated past and balance perceived threats to their livelihood and security against the values that they learned through their own long struggle for civil rights. As the newcomers — mostly of Muslim faith — attempt to make new lives for themselves and their children, leaders in this deeply religious community attempt to guide their congregations through this period of unprecedented change. Through the vibrant and colorful characters of Shelbyville, the film explores immigrant integration and the interplay between race, religion, and identity in this dynamic dialogue. The story is an intimate portrayal of a community’s struggle to understand what it means to be American.
Set in America's rural south, on the even of the recent election a town deals with issues of immigrant integration and reckons with its segregated past.

All are welcome to this screening.

The Pedestrian Poet
Sun Mar 20, 2:30 PM
Sameer Thakur
The Pedestrian Poet : Protest on the Sidewalk.

Sameer Thakur thinks that it is incredibly hard for one to write about themselves in third person. Other than that, Sameer's an 18 year old in law school, who fell in love with poetry when his mother would make fun of him with couplets in maithli, and never could move on. Most of his work, which will be available in The Pedestrian Poet, a collection of his poetry that is being published this year, is in English, Hindi and a pedestrian mixture of both that people his age communicate in.

The recital would involve a series of conversations, where poetry and certain really awkward conversations are had. His poetry, that in this particular scenario will talk about sedition, about the idea of a nation, protest against authority and teenage love, will seek to ensure that you encounter questions you have been trying to avoid.

The idea is to talk to our privileges, to ambush one's stereotypes, and to have a series of conversations that move you.

All are welcome to this talented youngster's recital.

V for vendetta -10 years of Mask
Wed Mar 23, 6:00 PM

This evening let us pay tribute to 10 years of the Guy Fawkes mask - a mark of protest and readiness for martyrdom when this iconic face was presented this week in 2006 through the film 'V for Vendetta'.

"V for Vendetta" is a 2006 March film that has been seen by many political groups as an allegory of oppression by government; libertarians and anarchists have used it to promote their beliefs.

Since then the Guy Fawkes mask has now become a common brand and a convenient placard to use in protest against tyranny – with people using it.

All are welcome to this evening of poetry readings, Discussion and screenings.

Omar" is a thriller and a romance with unabashedly melodramatic elements (there's even a love triangle), all of which are brought into stark relief by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Helped along by an amazing cast of mostly first-time actors, "Omar" feels very fresh due to its attitude, approach, and the fact that it offers no solutions. It's the story of three childhood friends caught up in a war that seemingly has no end. They are torn between their individual desires to have a home, a girlfriend, a family, and their devotion to the freedom of Palestine. In such an atmosphere, their best qualities will be used against them; their love for one another makes them vulnerable to betrayal.
Director: Hany Abu-Assad
Writer: Hany Abu-Assad

Made in 2013, this film gives a low-down account on the life of people under subjugation.

EK SOIRACHARI RAJAR KATHA
Sat Apr 2, 8:00 PM
Shudraka Hyderabad
Caligula, the Roman emperor, who succeeded Tiberius and preceded Claudius and ruled for less than four years (AD 37-41), remains mythic for his fanatical approach to power. The play, “Ek Soirachari Rajar Katha” is not a period piece i.e. a play concerned with a historical time. It has drawn from Camus' “Caligula” the concept of deification of emperors which was common to the pagan world, the Greek and Macedonian kings, including Alexander the Great, who ordered their priests to proclaim them Gods, as did the Caesars starting with Augustus.

In spite of restraining convention and law, the innately vicious or dangerously capricious autocratic tendency still exists. This enabled modern figures like Amin and Milosevic to indulge in ‘Caligula-ism’ – their dangerous whims and murderous eccentricities. Though it also meant that the only remedy for those who terrorized was assassination, "I (Caligula) am still alive!" (Caligula, tr. by Christopher Williams, 2007).

PLAY: EK SOIRACHARI RAJAR KATHA (Inspired by Albert Camus’ “Caligula”); LANGUAGE:BENGALI; ADAPTATION & PRODUCTION:SHUDRKA HYDERABAD; DIRECTION:SWAPAN MONDAL.

Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
Sat Apr 9, 8:00 PM
Octopus Studios
Play
Description: Octopus studios presents "Father, Son and Holy Ghost". The play is about how we get caught up in million little things, which become our collective life. It is a story which brings generations of moments all rolled neatly and absurdly into now. Now, this is loaded with history of combination of ordinary and extraordinary. It is interesting to observe all those ordinary moments which are pregnant with emotions collide and explode to become the narrative for the future generations to follow. This slowly becomes a vicious cycle of life. It is about a family which has gone through many situations in life. The father, who is disappointed with life, a son who is disappointed with father and a mother, who always dreamed of perfect home. The idea of perfection and happiness, which leads to desperation, a strong desire to be something, which slow fades into a life, which is a prisoner of hope and fear. For Passes: 9885333273

Entry - Free.

Lamakaan program committee

Omar - An Oscar nominated film
Sun Mar 27, 5:00 PM
Gaza51
As a part of two-day Palastine-Gaza-Westbank series of events, showing today an Academy nominated Best foreign language film 'Omar' preceded by readings from book 'My Dear Home'.
