"Going underground to look at the sky"
Description:
The next Sawaal-Jawaab: Conversations on Science features Prof. Amol Dighe of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai talking about
neutrinos and the planned Indian Neutrino Observatory that has been given the go-ahead by the Indian government. Neutrinos are the second most
abundant particles in the universe, and trillions of them pass through our body every second. They make the Sun shine, and even the Earth would not
be possible without them. Given that most of them come from the sky, why do we need to go deep underground to observe them ? What does the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO), one of the largest scientific experiments in the country, plan to achieve?

The Raven Hours: A Night of Poe
Wed Mar 18, 7:30 PM
Grim Pumpkin Theater
A night celebrating the legendary Edgar Allan Poe. We will be performing plays that are based on his short stories and poems.

Raven Nights is a tribute to Poe's wonderful literature and his literary world. We have chosen three of Poe's literary masterpieces- 'The Masque of Red Death, 'The Raven' and 'The Fall of the House of Usher' and adapted them to the stage. Actually, we adapted the second and the third one and Mr. Alex Broun had already adapted the first one, saving us some work. These are stories of horrifying madmen, all of them. Each one of them, trying to avoid their own doom. And finally found to be helpless creatures in the hands of fate.

Edgar Allan Poe(1809-1849) was an American poet and author, a master of madness, horror, mystery and macabre. He is often noted as the father of modern 'detective fiction'. His writing is dark, and melancholic. There is menace and death in every step, no matter how cautious one is. Poe's writing is fatalistic and reflects the helplessness of humans, slowly falling into doom.

Autobiography of a mad nation
Sat Mar 21, 7:00 PM
Sriram Karri
Lamakaan and 'Finger print' publishers invite you for a book release of Sriram Karri's "The autobiography of a mad nation".

Reading excepts from the book are: Vijay Marur, Shankar Melkote, and B.S.Prakash.

About the Book:
‘I was born in a mentally retarded country.’

Thus begins this provocative, stylish and racy literary rant against India by a 24 year old awaiting capital punishment; hoisting so huge a historic and political canvas to paint upon - opening at the Emergency that almost murdered Democracy and culminating in the Godhra riots, which almost destroyed secularism - a canvas so grand, it will leave you staggered ... and set the tone for a modern story of an ancient mad Nation!

Blurb for the book.

‘Mad Nation is a striking work of imagination…a work every intelligent reader will love’ - Bashrat Peer, writer of Haider and author of Curfewed Night

About the Author Sriram karri.

When asked, Sriram Karri is never quite sure if the nation he was born in, and loves so much, was and is really mad, or if merely he is. Either way, he has witnessed his country grow fondly, sadly, joyfully, regretfully, and above all, hopefully.

Chandamama Kathalu - Telugu film
Sat Apr 4, 6:00 PM
Lamakaan Lecture Series
Inviting you all for a Telugu film screening of Chandamama Kathalu - a national award winning film for best film in regional language this year - by Praveen Sataru who will deliver a talk on 'People's aspirations in Cinema' followed by the film screening and interaction with the film maker from 6pm onwards on Sat 4th April.

'Poeple's aspirations' have been sparingly addressed in popular media like cinema and TV which have increasingly been catering to more niche, more urbane, more sophisticated life styles - in the process relegating the very masses from the mass media to second tier citizens. There is a clear need to cater to this void and take the cinema in a direction to address various issues concerning the middle and lower middle class and their aspirations.

Praveen Sattaru succeeds in doing that in his national award winnign 'Chandamama Kathalu'.

About the film:
'Chandamama Kathalu Volume 1' is a 2014 Telugu, anthology film directed by Praveen Sattaru and produced by Chanakya Bhooneti. The film has eight sub-stories revolving around love. The lives of the central characters in the sub-plots get intertwined with each other. Lakshmi Manchu, Aamani, Naresh, Krishnudu, Chaitanya Krishna, Abhijeet, Naga Shourya, Vennela Kishore, Amitha Rao and Richa Panai play the lead roles.

About the filmmaker:
This is Praveen's 3rd feature film after Love Before Wedding (LBW), Oka Routine Love story.

Director Praveen Sattaru did Masters in chip designing in USA. Later he worked in USA for around 10 years as a SAP consultant in IBM. His passion towards Telugu culture and movies has made him come back and start penning scripts.

This is a part of Lamakaan Lecture Series discussion various topics like Art, Culture, Politics, Theater, Cinema, Media, Literature every week. Kick starting this series in this season is this year's national award winning filmmaker Praveen Sattaru.

abundant particles in the universe, and trillions of them pass through our body every second.

'Ek Bataa Paanch' is a story of five young individuals from different walks of life setting off on the journeys of their lifetimes after they are stung by the same impulse-triggering thought. It overrides their current pursuits and sets them all adrift into different directions, but to eventually bring them all together. This confluence of five distinct forces has light on one side and darkness on the other. Why have they met? Is it the gravity of an unavoidable consequence that pulls them all to that point or is destiny playing a sadistic surprise as usual? Will they walk into the light or leave behind permanent trails of darkness? What will they do with each other, and to each other? Well, you have to wait and watch. “Aami - art in me” presents 'Ek Bataa Paanch', is a workshop Production. A story of five, with five and most importantly, by five.
