Biryani aur Haleem - Comedy Play
Wed Feb 19, 8:00 PM
Sutradhar
The world we live in is a very strange place. Some eat to live and some live to eat. In one way or another our lives revolve around food: some cook; some eat; some store it ; some hoard it; some starve for it; some steal it..Our very survival depends on food.

That is what the two main characters of this play are trying to do; survive another day in their lives. Salim & Javed are two beggars; like any other; they meet on a street like any other; on a day like any other. But what results is hilarity like never before.

The two share their stories; their ‘areas’; and their modus operandi. As they go from street to street and house to house pleading to people’s sense of charity, they chance upon the home of Ismail Bhai & his wife Pasha Bi. Ismail Bhai is a well known cook who has been invited by a Nawaab to display his culinary skills. Eager to impress the nawaab, he prepares a special Biryani and instructs his wife to hand it over to the delivery boy he sends.

The plan is overheard by the two hungry friends, who decide to change the route of the Biryani to their hungry stomachs instead of the Nawaab’s.

What becomes of Salim, Javed & the Biryani?

An adaptation of ‘The Pie & The Tart’

By Hugh Chesterman

Directed by

Mohit & Deepti

The press says :

Deccan Chronicle : “The laugh-a-minute play highly entertains the audience who are in splits throughout...”
The Times Of India : “The laughter it evoked from the audience stayed on till the end of the evening...”
The Hindu : “Their comic timing was impeccable, which was evident when the audience was in splits every few seconds...”

Community Singing - Lullabies
Sun Feb 23, 4:00 PM
HWMF
HWMF started a Community singing project with bi-monthly sessions. These sessions are all about using music as a tool to connect people together and create the sense of a community.
Communities around the world have made used the simple act of singing together to boost their morale, bring each other together, and gain energy.
HWMF is doing a Community singing project with bi-monthly sessions.
The motivation is simply to feel each others' energy and understand what it is like to sing with a room full of people. It is expected that participants have a basic interest in learning songs from all over the world in different languages and historical contexts! For this reason, we have set the minimum age to 12 years.
So if you are fond of singing just for the sheer joy of it, this is the place to be!

If you haven’t attended the last sessions, don’t worry – you can join any session fresh.
If you have – don’t worry either – we don’t repeat repertoire or warm-ups so it is going to be new every time!

Lullabies are probably the one song type that is sung everywhere in the world – the common denominator of music itself. All of us have been sung to sleep. In this session, we will explore lullabies sung around the world, which are written in very different styles – some major, some minor, and some exotic scales. An example lullaby we would be doing is: “Fi la nana, e mi bel fiol” from Italy!

Tejaswinee Kelkar, our course director, is doing her MS at IIIT Hyderabad. She has studied an Associate Diploma in Western Classical theory and composition as well as Sangeet Visharad in Hindustani Classical music and is locally part of the choir group the Deccan Voices.

"GREGOR SAMSA"

An adaptation of Franz Kafka's novella "Metamorphosis"
by
Anjali Parvati Koda

Directed by Rathna Shekar Reddy

Franz Kafka. The images the name brings. A tragic life. A tragic death. Heavy stories that brought about both despair and catharsis. Yet when he first read his epic novella Metamorphosis to his friends, he read it as if it were a comedy. The listeners laughed and clapped at the troubles of Gregor Samsa who woke up one fine morning to discover he had, somehow, metamorphosed into a bug. Gregor Samsa, the salesman turned into a bug must now face the reality of his new form and his family of parents and sister must now deal with it.

Is it a tragedy or a comedy when his manager is scared away by the bug that was/is Gregor? Is it really funny that he now has a taste for spoiled food? Is it hilarious that his family now will not look at him?

Come watch the Comedy/tragedy as the family turns from scared to sympathetic to horror and apathy, as they react to this strange illness.

The adaptation of this novella, "Gregor Samsa" by Anjali Parvati Koda, is presented by Samahaara after her earlier critically acclaimed plays "Purushotham" and "Dominic Wesley".

Storytelling Open Mic - by Udyam
Sat Mar 1, 4:00 PM
Sukanya Banerjee
Our very first open mic storytelling session is here!
Share a story - any story - with us. It could be about that time, when you bunked a class or that time when you finally turned up; that time when you were swindled in chor bazaar or the time someone caught you smoking; it could be an out and out exaggerated version of the real life experience, and it could be a completely made up fictional story. So long as you're ready to tell us, we're ready to listen!

We have only two conditions. NO READING, NO CHEATING! You must TELL us the story you want to share with us. You cannot, absolutely cannot read it out of somewhere. Even more importantly, you cannot, can not, CAN NOT take someone else's story and call it your own. Stories must be entirely based on personal experience and original thought. Go ahead and use whatever language you will! Just make sure all of us can understand what you're saying. Translate, explain, enact. In our last session, we had participants tell stories in Hindi, English and even Bhojpuri! Try not to take more than five minutes at the mic; there are others who want to share their experiences too.

Join us for an hour long session of stories at the Lamakaan, on Saturday, 1st March at 4:00 pm. We'll be waiting for you at the main gate! See you!

Special Indeed - A Play
Sat Mar 1, 7:00 PM
Suzanne Patel
'Special Indeed' is a play about an autistic individual and his recollection of the most significant experiences from his childhood/school-life that motivate him to outgrow the problem to a certain extent. Of course, he has obvious traces of autism even in his adult life, but he has now learnt to channelise whatever is in his power into something productive. The childhood experiences he now recollects are not exactly bright or positive, but they eventually turn out to be, because without them, he would have never developed the will to fight his condition. Brief flashes of those life-changing events in between his monologue as an adult will give the audience an understanding of how special the special children really are. The whole world is always wishing they were normal, but the protagonist of our play always wonders: 'What is normal? Isn't normal subjective to situations and people?'

In Nov 2013 Kadak Chaai brought together an incredible group of individuals who were hungry for the knowledge and experience of Theatre. Over the weekends of a couple of months, this group conceived and beautifully nurtured and raised a simple idea into a special one-act play.

Kandhamal Unresolved
Wed Mar 5, 6:30 PM
Shailendra Boora
‘Swami’ Lakshmananda Saraswati was killed on 23rd of Aug 2008, by Maoists in Kandhamal, Odisha, India. The Hindu fundamentalists blamed Christians for the killing and instigated violence against Christians. During the violence, more than 75 were killed, 5000 houses were looted and burnt 250 Christian institutions were reduced to ashes, 55000 people were displaced in their own land and several women were raped, including a nun.

It’s been five years since the communal violence unleashed against Christians in Kandhamal, Odisha. Until now, peace and justice have been denied to the victims. Very few were arrested and even they were released. On the contrary six innocent tribals, who were never part of the murder of Laxmanananda were immediately jailed and after five years they were convicted. As time passes by voices of victims are ignored and their stories are forgotten and their due justice is skewed and denied. So, in our effort to keep the memories alive and to advocate justice and peace for the victims of the violence and to conscientize the citizens of India against the politics of religious fundamentalism, the film ‘Kandhamal Unresolved’ is been made. The film looks into the present situation of Kandhamal, especially the struggles of victims, denial of justice and peace, intimidation and hate-campaign by Sangh Parivar and the relationship between the Hindu identity and Adivasi identity.

Kanyasulkam - Women's Day film
Fri Mar 7, 1:00 PM
International Women's Film Festival Hyderabad
Kanyasulkam (Telugu: కన్యాశుల్కం) is a 1955 film based on Telugu play written by Gurazada Apparao in 1892. It is one of the earliest modern works in an Indian vernacular language, and it is the first Telugu play to deal with social issues. The play portrays the practice of Kanya-sulkam (roughly translates to bride price) which was common among the priestly Brahmins in Telugu-speaking areas of southern India. Controversial in its time, this play continues to be one of the most popular Telugu literary works of all time. A number of expressions used by Gurazada in this play are still popular in modern-day Telugu.

Objective of the Play:

Gurazada wrote this play to raise awareness about what he felt was a scandalous state of affairs in society. His English preface to the first edition states: "Such a scandalous state of things is a disgrace to society, and literature can not have a higher function than to show up such practices and give currency to a high standard of moral ideas. Until reading habits prevail among masses, one must look only to the stage to exert such healthy influence." Traditionally, Telugu literary works were written in a highly stylistic language with complicated words and meter; these works could only be understood by the educated elite. Gurazada's mission was to reach out to the masses, so he broke with tradition (he called the literary dialect "doubly dead" in his preface) and wrote in the vibrant and colorful spoken language of the day.

The screening will be followed by interaction with Literary lovers and social activists and Gurazada historian Vedagiri Rambabu.

All are welcome.

A Day after Everyday - A Kashyap
Sun Mar 9, 10:30 AM
IWFF
1) That day after every day deals with eve teasing , an extremely relevant and sensitive social cause that has been disturbing all of us for quite some time now. The film revolves around three women who overcome their helplessness in a situation where eve teasing had become a daily routine in their life and when no one was willing to help them from within the society.

2) It's your Fault:
Every sexual assault case in India inspires a string of stupid and hateful remarks against women. This is our response to those remarks.

3) No country for women:
What Culture and Country are we proud of where mythical goddesses are worshiped but real women are killed on birth, molested, raped, burnt in the name of dowry, eve teased, beaten on streets and in homes. There is no basic respect for women in this patriarchal society. To add to this media plays a pivotal role in shaping the mindset and attitude of the Indian Society. This film is produced entirely out of Youtube content, comprising of Bollywood movie scenes, songs, reality television clips & news reports. No content has been modified other than the original footage, news reports and songs found on Youtube. It has been edited to question the sociological impact of the shallow content on the ethos of the masses and the state of women in the present Indian society.

4) Majority Oppressed:

The 10-minute film tells the story of Pierre, an ordinary guy, on an ordinary day, in an unnamed French town. But something is different in Pierre's world. Women are in charge. They run around barechested – hey, it's hot! – piss in an alley, and offer sexual favours to Pierre when he is stuck at a red light. (He's riding a bike, so his lack of physical barriers provides an opportunity if not a provocation.) Events culminate when Pierre is sexually assaulted at knifepoint. Inevitably, the police officer who takes Pierre's statement is female. She raises an eyebrow, but only to check for accuracy: "She pinched my testicles … then she took my penis in her mouth and bit it"?

Invoking Justice -films on women
Sun Mar 9, 1:30 PM
IWFF
1) Invoking Justice
A film by Deepa Dhanraj
India, 2011, 85 minutes, Color, DVD, Tamil, Subtitled
Order No. W121082
In Southern India, family disputes are settled by Jamaats—all male bodies which apply Islamic Sharia law to cases without allowing women to be present, even to defend themselves. Recognizing this fundamental inequity, a group of women in 2004 established a women’s Jamaat, which soon became a network of 12,000 members spread over 12 districts. Despite enormous resistance, they have been able to settle more than 8,000 cases to date, ranging from divorce to wife beating to brutal murders and more. Award-winning filmmaker Deepa Dhanraj (SOMETHING LIKE A WAR) follows several cases, shining a light on how the women’s Jamaat has acquired power through both communal education and the leaders’ persistent, tenacious and compassionate investigation of the crimes. In astonishing scenes we watch the Jamaat meetings, where women often shout over each other about the most difficult facets of their personal lives. Above all, the women’s Jamaat exists to hold their male counterparts and local police to account, and to reform a profoundly corrupt system which allows men to take refuge in the most extreme interpretation of the Qur’an to justify violence towards women.

2) A Day in the Life - by ICRISAT

When policy and investment decisions are made “to help the poor people”, broad macro data is used. The voices of the poor are generally not heard. For 39 years ICRISAT has been having full time investigators living in the villages of India surveying the dynamics of village life. Gender issues and women empowerment have been an important part of this. Socio-economists have studied the data and promoted the on-the-ground realities, with the aim of Raising the Voices of the Poor.

Gulaabi Gang-Film by Nishta Jain
Sun Mar 9, 7:30 PM
IWFF
The Gulabi Gang is an extraordinary women’s movement formed in 2006 by Sampat Pal Devi in the Banda District of Uttar Pradesh in Northern India. This region is one of the poorest districts in the country and is marked by a deeply patriarchal culture, rigid caste divisions, female illiteracy, domestic violence, child labour, child marraiges and dowry demands. The women’s group is popularly known as Gulabi or ‘Pink’ Gang because the members wear bright pink saris and wield bamboo sticks. Sampat says, “We are not a gang in the usual sense of the term, we are a gang for justice.”

The Gulabi Gang was initially intended to punish oppressive husbands, fathers and brothers, and combat domestic violence and desertion. The members of the gang would accost male offenders and prevail upon them to see reason. The more serious offenders were publicly shamed when they refused to listen or relent. Sometimes the women resorted to their lathis, if the men resorted to use of force.

This moving depiction of this group is filmed by Nishta Jain, a graduate from Jamia Mass Communication Centre in New Delhi. She used to work as an editor and correspondent for video news magazines before she decided to study at Film and Television Institute of India, specializing in film direction.

Her films have received several international awards and have been extensively shown in international film festivals, broadcast on international TV networks and regularly shown in schools and colleges in India and abroad.

All are welcome to this women's day eve screening.

Oggukatha is a traditional folklore singing praising and narrating the stories of Hindu gods. It originated among communties who devoted themselves to the singing of ballads in praise of Lord Shiva (also called Mallikarjuna). These tradition-loving and ritual-performing community moves from place to place, narrating the stories of their caste gods. Oggus are the traditional priests of the Yadavas and perform the marriage of Mallanna with Bhramaramba.

The narrator and his chorus i.e. two narrators-help in dramatizing the narration as very often, they transform themselves into two characters.

Society to Save Rocks
The Society to Save Rocks is planning a meeting of NGOs on Saturday, 1.March 2014, from 4 – 7 p.m., at Lamakaan to work out ways in which environmental societies and citizens’ groups can work together and support each-other for the benefit of Hyderabad’s environment.

A trigger for this meeting is the recent large-scale destruction of a big tract of stunning rocks in Venkateshwaragutta, a hill north of Shamirpet Lake which has been notified a Heritage Rock Precinct, and also is part of a Reserved Forest. This is said to be for the construction of a huge 150 MLD Water Reservoir for Godavari water to be brought to the city. While the Forest Department and Environment Ministry GoI have denotified 19 ha. of forest land for this project, the Heritage Regulations of HMDA have been completely ignored.

These 4 films are a part of women's day film festivals.

Community Singing - Lullabies
Sun Mar 9, 4:00 PM

Oggukatha is a traditional folklore singing praising and narrating the stories of Hindu gods.
