Tamils and Human Rights
Sun Oct 20, 11:30 AM
Saraswati Kavula
NAPM invites you to join for an interactive discussion: "Tamils and Human Rights - How the unresolved post-war situation in Sri Lanka affects Democracy in South Asia" on 20th October from 11.30am at Lamakaan to visit a small exhibition and some visual material and to discuss the impact of the situation in our neighbouring country on democracy in India and in South Asia.

NAPM and fraternal socialist organizations are conducting a tour of Srilankan Tamil people through different states from 16th to 28th October, 2013. On 20th October they are going to be in Hyderabad as part of this tour.

From Nov.21, 2013 onwards, the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is planned to be held in Colombo. Currently, many protests are going on against this move. Human Rights organizations are adverse to the attempt to create the impression as if normalcy had returned to Sri Lanka after thirty years of strife and civil war. Even worse, Mr.Rajapakshe has been depicted as the hero in the “War in Terror”, a concept which is also in great use in India. He was the Guest of Honour of the Commonwealth games in Delhi. The recent visit of the UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Navaneetham Pillai, has brought to light in no uncertain terms that despite many efforts to create new infrastructures and to restore tolerable living conditions, the sufferings of people in the camps, the pain of large scale disappearances and the lot if about 80000 war widows have not been attended to in serious ways. The refusal to implement the 13th amendment to the constitution stands in the way of devolution of power.

While Tamil Nadu has been deeply aware of the situation in our neighbouring country, the extent of violence, bloodshed and displacement, is often not fully understood in other Indian states. This has led to certain alienation of Tamil Nadu the so-called “mainstream”. The tour of people concerned with the question of human rights violations in Sri Lanka, the question of genocide and massive displacement, triggers many questions in the Indian society as well, which need to be addressed if we strive for a viable Indian Society.

"In Defence of Democracy"
Fri Oct 25, 3:30 PM
S.Q.Masood & Namrata Jaiswal
Campaign Launch - "In Defence of Democracy".

Every election is a challenge for democracy. The forthcoming one is more so as this time as the communal forces are asserting themselves through various mechanisms. On one hand the ‘image of Modi’ is being projected and there is an attempt to encash his well constructed image of ‘development man’, ‘incorruptible man’ and on the other to polarize the society through communal actions, on the pretext of terror, in the context of relations with Pakistan and through communal violence at various places.

In the wake of the onslaught of the communal fascist forces there is a need for all secular forces to regroup and safeguard the Indian Constitution, democracy and secularism.

We have to gear ourselves to enhance the democratic-secular values and defend democracy and pluralism in our society. While many of us are seriously engaged for promotion of these very values, we still need to do a bit more in the light of the coming General elections.

A national level campaign "In Defence of Democracy" is initiated by national level NGOs, CSOs and many activist include Shabnam Hashmi (Anhad), Dr. Ram Puniyani (AISF), Zakia Somon (Center for Peace Studies) and others.

In Hyderabad we are launching this campaign "In Defence of Democracy" on 25th October 2013, 3:30 to 5:30 pm.

Written by R Raj Rao | Enacted by Feroze

Unemployed.

Of course, angst-ridden.

But, sarcastic. And gay!

Just imagine he gets locked up inside the luxurious bathroom of his
lover. And then flushes down a humorous tale from him in his
confinement in the loo. But, what has he got to share with us? locked
inside the bathroom and he still has some scrap of the feeling of
being wanted. Whether his belief stays or withers away to repeat
history is the twist that's kept for the last. But who put him in the
loo and what hopes does he have in store (of getting out)?

Come witness a tale of failure, frustration, freedom and fulfillment
with humor all through.

Le Mashale...
Sat Nov 16, 7:30 PM
Ojas SV
'Le Mashale…" is the soliloquy in which Irom Sharmila narrates the anguish and aspiration of Manipur through its fables, dances and major incidences which transformed her life. The play talks about brutality unleashed on known and unknown Manoramas in the valley and the protest by determined women who do not mind their nudity over their struggle for justice. The play puts forth many questions raised by torch bearing women from the valley.

Le Mashale…
Manipur: a heavenly land belonging to various ethnic communities; a land with rich culture and history and also a land of unrest; a land under the brutal control of the Indian military forces; a land which struggles for its own identity and democratic right to self determination. Manipur- a land adorned by strong women who bear torch…

Irom Sharmila Chanu- a daughter of this land- is one such woman. A poet and activist who by her dedication and self realization has become a living legend. This is her 10th year of hunger strike against exploitation of her and people by not just Indian army violence but also by mainland centric Indian politics. A physically frail but very strong in her dedication she has become an inspiration for the valley and non violent struggles all over. Her body is her weapon – and this realization has made her a milestone. As eminent writer Mahashweta Devi expresses- "the 21st century should be known by the dedication and struggle of Irom Sharmila."

The Editor Wants to Know-Matinee
Sun Nov 17, 10:30 AM
K Naresh Kumar
On the occasion of National Press Day, this is a matinee play which attempts to understand the changing requirements of the readers and stakeholders and what constitutes public interest in today's times.

This play highlights the changing definition of news and reporting in today's mass media industry where fluff is increasingly replacing hard news focusing on socio-political and socio-economic realities. The unfolding of events is seen through the eyes of a conscientious editor, who is firm in his belief that the media has to be on a mission of serving public interest which is at variance with his owner/proprietor. The one-hour play, split into four scenes examines the current scenario and attempts a critical look at the state of affairs in the country today.
