Bicycle Spoon Apple
Sat Sep 21, 3:30 PM
Alzheimers and Related Disorders Society of India Hyderabad Decc
On the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day, screening of international documentary directed by Oscar nominated Spanish director Carlos Bosch. This fascinating documentary about Alzheimer’s Disease is set apart from similar medical documentaries through the sheer charisma and personality of Pasqual Maragall, the former Mayor of Barcelona and President of Catalunya who was diagnosed with the disease in 2007, and who allowed documentary maker Carles Bosch intimate access to his life. The Maragall story is inter-cut with doctors and experts discussing AD and how it might be combated, and a series of scenes of other AD sufferers around the world – in the US, India and Holland – talking to their doctors. The words ‘bicycle, spoon, apple’ are simply words that the doctors might ask an AD sufferer (the words change from doctor to country) to try and remember, to test their powers of recall.

The film also has a fair bit of representation from India, specifically covering the work of the Memory Clinic, Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (in association with Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Society of India, Hyderabad chapter) presents this in the wider global context of medical research and work in AD.

25th Listening Post:
Art Songs from the romantic era – Lieder and chanson

Piano, voice and sentimental poems about the nature of life. This week, let us explore art songs from the romantic period. These songs of high literary quality, acutely represented by careful music, became very popular in the 19th century and onwards. Art songs are often performed in sets or ‘song cycles’.The german version of art song – a lied (pl. lieder) and its french counterpart – the Chanson – represent not just the landscape and emotional geography of people in that time, but also is the essence of romantic ideology. Art song is a true exploration of poetry through music, immortalized by composers such as Schubert, Schumann, Poulenc, Debussy and many others.

Presented by Tejaswinee Kelkar, who is at present doing her MS at IIIT in Hyderabad. She has studied Western Classical as well as Hindustani Classical music and is locally part of the choir group the Deccan Voices.

Sun Oct 6, 7:00 PM
Saichand T
In commemoration of the Centenary of Indian Cinema, here is a tribute paid to some great personalities from Indian Cinema.

Presented by Saichand Tripuraneni this week features Marcus Bartley, the great cinematographer of yester years. Marcus worked as cinematographer to the films ‘Yogi Vemana’ and ‘Guna Sundari Katha’ on ‘Vauhini’ banner. And under ‘Vijaya Films’ banner “Sowcaaru, Pathala Bhairavi, Pelli Chesi Choodu, Chandraharam, Missamma, Maya Bazar, Jagadeka Veeruni Katha, Gundamma Katha “ and others. His trick photography in ‘Pathala Bhairavi’ is worth remembering where he used shadows in the song sequences to convey different moods in this film. Bartley created an illusion of flying Maya Mahal in the climax of the film. In actuality the setting was arranged on the stable in Studio. Bartley’s cinematography in the film ‘Chandraharam’ was one of the mile stones in his career. The dance sequence ‘Kaluvalu-Chandrudu’ in this film was telecasted in the BBC Television in those times when India didn’t have any television facility.

'Mantras of Mahatma'
Wed Oct 9, 5:00 PM
Silver Oaks. The School of Hyderabad
To highlight the higher purpose of education, Silver Oaks has been focusing on an inside out approach
where character first and competence next have been the priorities.

While the society out there is in turmoil, a school cannot be oblivious to that .
If there is fire out there, the young people need to learn how to douse the fire.

A value generative society is what we significantly need now. With this compelling need,
School instantly connected to the timeless and universal tenets of
Mahatma Gandhi- the father of our nation.

Silver Oaks derived five mantras from the teachings of Mahatma-
Swadharma, Satyagraha, Swaraj, Sarvodaya and Swades

Since then, 2000 young people and 4000 members of their families, 200 team members and nearly 1000 members of their families,
have been trying to comprehend and relate to these mantras in the times and contexts they are living in.

The school has been striving to show the usefulness of these mantras to all age groups through culture, events , processes and policies.

With so many people trying, deliberating and chanting the five mantras, we felt that we need to go beyond the school community
to spread our message of values, harmony and universal welfare which we derived from Gandhian philosophy.

As a school we are standing by our Swadharma, with Swaraj in our thoughts, Sarvodaya in our actions,
respecting Satyagraha we are grooming contributors to build our Swades.

In 2013, we have written a book on Mantras of Mahatma.

We request you to accommodate a space and 20 minutes of your time
for our students to give the message of Gandhism in the present day context through the form of 'nukkad natak'- street play

There will be 20 of them escorted by a teacher and distribute resolution cards.

Looking forward to your positive response

As a school it is our Swadharma 'to groom contributors to the society, not just consumers'

Suryakantham - Cinema Cinema
Sun Oct 13, 7:00 PM
Saichand Tripuraneni
To commemorate 100 years of Indian Cinema, we present documentary film on various doyen of Telugu film industry. This week we present a film on Legendary actor Suryakantham.

Suryakantam started as a dancer in Chandralekha, produced by the Gemini Studios. Thanks to the efforts of Leela Kumari, she got her first role as character artiste in Narada Naradi. But small roles did not satisfy the artiste insider her. She dreamt of going to Bombay (Mumbai) for better opportunities. When Gemini Studio makers failed to provide her roles other than a dancer, she quit her job. But her financial position would not permit her pursue her dream.
Later, she got a good character artist role in the movie Gruhapravesam. Though, she got an opportunity to do the heroine's role in Soudamini, she did not do it. The heroine chance slipped away from her, when she met with a car accident (in which Suryakantam was hurt in the face). But she consolidated her position by playing the role of a cruel mother-in-law in Samsaram. There was no looking back thereafter. The audience began to abuse her Suryakantam (of course her character).
Once again, the most-wanted “heroine” role tapped her door from Bollywood. Knowing that the producer had dropped a heroine from his movie on personal grounds; and the same was given to her; Suryakantam rejected the offer, saying “I can’t live on the unhappiness of other artists.” Such was the integrity of Suryakantham, as an artist. Kodarikam lifted her to lofty heights. Ace directors of the era, B. Nagi Reddy and Chakrapani would not do a movie without Suryakantam. They had even produced a movie Gundamma Katha, starring N. T. Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao and S.V. Ranga Rao. The entire story would revolve around Suryakantam's role of Gundamma. Audience all over state wondered at the title. But when the movie released, it became a big hit. She has done great roles in Telugu industry as a mother-in-law character.

Love, Sex and Mocha
Wed Oct 16, 7:30 PM

Love, Sex and Mocha is a quirky rom-com, that infuses slam poetry and theatre as one, is a satire on modern chick flicks that creates a twist on the male-female relationship.Bubbly and frothy, this theatrical effort takes a quirky look at the mans cup of woes, which seems to runneth over! A comic perspective of all the men who have been stirred (and shaken!) over the years, even though they have tried to sweeten their lives with spoonfuls of sugar! The cup of
mocha is probably steamier than the love and sex in their lives! A hilarious romantic comedy which the men in the audience are sure to identify with! The play is bought to you by the makers of Sex,likes & Pokes

Underdog Entertainment
