PRINCE OF TEARS - Book of Poems
Fri Aug 2, 7:30 PM
Sumanaspati Reddy
"What Hope for Humanity?";

'Shall we forgive and forget?
What kind of compassion makes my enemy
My brother?
What kind of humane-ness
Makes you die
For your 'other'?'

Lamakaan is hosting the release of “Prince of Tears” by Fatima Shahnaz. The book is a collection of English poetry in the elegiac style based on the author’s bereavement at the loss of her maternal uncle, to whom she was close, who died late last year in Hyderabad. Her uncle, related to the family of the Nizam of Hyderabad, was also of the royal Mughal lineage. The poems in this anthology are elegies focusing on feelings of love, grieving and closure. Some are in the unique ‘Marsiya’ style that was developed in Arabic and Farsi in Persia after the martyrdom and murder of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, at Kerbella. Mahatma Gandhi emulated Imam Hussein’s non-violence and protest against tyranny in his own passive non-violent resistance movement, as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did later in the U.S. The poems in this collection, however, are transcendental and inspirational, focusing on Dr. Shahnaz’s uncle’s unique spirituality steeped in the ancient mystical cultures and religions of India and its pluralistic spirituality. In this way these poems are tributes to love in all its diversity and transcendence, and to non-violence. When Dr. Shahnaz first gave a poetry reading at the Hyderabad Poetry Society of this work prior to its publication, some of Hyderabad’s elite academics and authors saluted the poems as “uniquely original, groundbreaking and never done before.”

Fatima Shahnaz, a Ph.D. from the Sorbonne University, Paris, is a published author both in India, the United States and Europe, where she was educated at an English boarding school. She was appointed the first Asian Head Girl there, and was awarded first prizes for Writing and the Jawaharlal Nehru Gold Medal in her childhood and teens. She worked as a Professor of Political Science at the Hyderabad Central University, the Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delh,i and Guest speaker at the Academic Staff College (HCU). Additionally she has been a guest professor at numerous other academic institutions in India and abroad. In New York, where her first novel, GOLCONDA, was published by News India-Times, she was also a featured and awarded poet and writer of the New York literary scene. She also launched an advocacy on international human rights, against racial injustice and for civil liberties in New York, the India Peace Organization. Her speeches and activism on human rights were both in the U.S. and India. As a theatre director and artistic director of her own theatre company in New York, her drama ensemble was listed among the elite rising Off-Broadway companies in the city. She has received a citation from the Government of France as “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres,” or “Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters” for her contribution to international culture and civilization. Among her several books of poetry, “In the Arms of Words: Poems for Tsunami Relief” was published by Sherman Asher publishers, New York. Shahnaz’s introduction and a poem were selected for this book, and proceeds from sales were donated to victims of the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Lean Startup Hyderabad
Sat Aug 3, 10:30 AM
Siddharth
Startups exist not to make stuff, make money, or serve customers. They exist to learn how to build a sustainable business.

This learning can be validated scientifically, by running experiments that allow us to test each element of our vision. That's why the fundamental activity of a startup is to turn ideas into products, measure how customers respond, and then learn whether to pivot or persevere.

Lean startup is a methodology built around maximizing validated customer learning thought fast Build/Measure/Learn iteration loops. It isn't just about how to create a more successful entrepreneurial business, it's about what we can learn from those businesses to improve virtually everything we do. It's ultimately an answer to the question 'How can we learn more quickly what works, and discard what doesn't?

Ek Shahi Raat - Play
Sat Aug 3, 7:30 PM
The Turiya theatre group

If you thought ancient kingdoms were all about inexhaustible treasures, bewildering secret chambers, momentous battles and legendary kings, think again.

If you thought, legendary kings were all about honor, unbendable morals and loyalties, leading from the front, think once again.

Alternatively, you could just come and watch ‘Ek Shahi Raat’ – a 70-minute Hindi Play by the Turiya Theater Group.

Come witness the unfurling of an astonishing chronicle of a slipshod king blinded by his repulsive fantasies, an artist obligated to heave out a story buried under the sands of time, and a jester (king’s own fool) asked to do what he does best: act as a joker. When the night dawns on the kingdom and they are all inebriated, they are the best of friends.

If you thought, a king’s friends were a privileged lot as compared to his enemies or other court members, definitely think again.

The play is written by Miro Gavran, Indian adaptation and Direction by Bavani Ganti.

How Vibrant is Gujarat? -Reality
Wed Aug 7, 7:00 PM
ANHAD
How Vibrant is Gujarat?: Development Myths and Reality.

Lamakaan is proud to present three well known grassroots activists from Gujarat to kick off our debates and discussions as India moves into another election season.

Mahesh Pandya is a well known environmental activist and a regular commentator on the environmental crisis in Gujarat. He is part of a grassroots environmental organization Pariyavaran Mitr (Friends of the Environment) and many years of movement experience in the State.

Hemant Shah is a well known journalist/academic who has studied and written on the agrarian economy in Gujarat for over three decades. He most recently taught at H. K. College Ahmedabad and was a Distinguished Speaker at the inauguration of the Centre for Food Security and Agro Economy at the Gujarat National Law University.

Rumal Dhrangi is a adivasi activist and sarpanch from Sabarkantha in Central Gujarat and has been an outspoken critic of the government on adivasi issues.

Much hype has surrounded Narendra Modi's central developmentalist platform - Vibrant Gujarat. As he emerges as the BJPs Prime Ministerial candidate, it is important to examine if Vibrant Gujarat is different from Shining India - the BJPs failed electoral strategy of yester years. There is no better way to begin this process than to listen to voices from the ground in Gujarat.

Tribal Land &Forest Rights-Talk
Fri Aug 9, 7:00 PM
Sujata Surepally
On the World Indigenous Day, Lamakaan hosts a talk on 'Tribal Land and Forest Rights' by Dr Palla Trinadha Rao, is practicing lawyer, tribal rights activist, involved in tribal rights advocacy since 1986 and writing on tribal issues.

Land is their most important natural, valuable asset and imperishable endowment from which the tribals derive their sustenance, social status, economic and social equality, permanent place of the abode and work and living.

The entire tribal life process was centered and built upon two major means of production, that is, the forest and the land, which are described as twin pillars of tribal economy. The relationship with these two, especially with the latter, is something like their “philosophy of life”.The non-tribals started penetrating the forest and hill areas to exploit economic resources, thereby undermining the traditional economy and society of the tribals.

Rabit-Proof Fence (Movie)
Fri Aug 9, 7:30 PM
Sumanaspati Reddy
Western Australia, 1931. Government policy includes taking half-caste children from their Aboriginal mothers and sending them a thousand miles away to what amounts to indentured servitude, "to save them from themselves." Molly, Daisy, and Grace (two sisters and a cousin who are 14, 10, and 8) arrive at their Gulag and promptly escape, under Molly's lead. For days they walk north, following a fence that keeps rabbits from settlements, eluding a native tracker and the regional constabulary. Their pursuers take orders from the government's "chief protector of Aborigines," A.O. Neville, blinded by Anglo-Christian certainty, evolutionary world view and conventional wisdom. Can the girls survive?

Half-caste is an archaic term for category of people of mixed race or ethnicity.
In Australia, the term half-caste was widely used in the 19th- and early-20th-century British commonwealth laws to refer to the offspring of White colonists and the Aboriginal natives of the continent.

At the Crossroads - A film
Tue Aug 13, 7:00 PM
Aishwarya Mishra
The Nehruvian era made ordinary people - mostly adivasis and dalits - lose their lands, forests and streams in the name of ‘national development’. That development never reached them. Not only they remained as deprived of basic health care and education as ever, but also of even safe drinking water though surrounded by reservoirs and dams. While this state injustice continued unabated, the post-liberalization era made these very people `anti-national’, ‘anti-development’ and `Maoists/Naxalites’, when they resisted corporate land grab for mining and industrialization. This branding became and continues to be an easy license to kill them with impunity. Southern Odisha is witness to this war between the hapless people and the neoliberal development paradigm. It led to CPI (Maoist) consolidating its presence in this area in the recent past. The film tries to explore the predicament, the dilemma and the confusion of the local people, especially, of adivasis and dalits in this war zone.

Note: The screening will be followed by a discussion with the film maker

The fascinating story of the Lords, a Parsi family of musicians who have collectively worked for over 60 years in Mumbai's film orchestras.

Songs have been an integral part of Indian films. The singers, the music directors, the lyricists - they have all been celebrated for their work. But who were those unseen - and uncredited - musicians who made up the orchestras that played on those songs and the background scores?

'The Human Factor' tells the fascinating story of the Lords, a Parsi family of musicians who have collectively worked for over 60 years in Mumbai's film orchestras. But the story of the Lords is not theirs alone. It also remains a crucial but obscure chapter in the history of Indian cinema.

In the centenary year of Indian cinema, this documentary - replete with rare archival material - will provide viewers with a subaltern history of Bollywood.

Love, Sex and Mocha - 1st show

Love, Sex and Mocha is a quirky rom-com, that infuses slam poetry and theatre as one, is a satire on modern chick flicks that creates a twist on the male-female relationship.Bubbly and frothy, this theatrical effort takes a quirky look at the mans cup of woes, which seems to runneth over! A comic perspective of all the men who have been stirred (and shaken!) over the years, even though they have tried to sweeten their lives with spoonfuls of sugar! The cup of
mocha is probably steamier than the love and sex in their lives! A hilarious romantic comedy which the men in the audience are sure to identify with! The play is bought to you by the makers of 'Sex,likes and pokes', 'Hangover' and 'Whats up with indian men'??

FABRICATED - DOCU FILM
Tue Aug 20, 7:00 PM
DOCUMENTARY CIRCLE OF HYDERABAD
This is a story of the post Independent India. Every year when this country celebrates freedom, there are thousands of innocent prisoners in Indian jails, waiting for justice without even a trial. Abdul Nasar Maudany is one such victim. As a Muslim spiritual leader, he reacted strongly against the demolition of Babari Masjid in 1992. His house was attacked and he spent nine and a half years in jail. All the charges against him were proven false and even the judgement makes it clear that the case was fabricated. He was released without any compensation. No trial on those who were responsible for such fabrication was conducted. But soon, Maudany was framed for another series of charges and he is still waiting for justice in Bangalore Parappana Agrahara jail. The documentary film shows that this is not an isolated case, but several Muslims, dalits, adivasis and activists from people’s movements go through similar experiences. The question raised by the film is `why is a person spending so many years in jail in without being proven guilty?’ This documentary film portrays the inner dynamics of the manner in which the present institutions of the democratic system functions, so that a large number of innocent people can be framed and fabricated with false cases and dumped in jails for long periods, without the provision of basic human rights as per the requirements of Indian Constitution.

Produced by: Justice for Maudany Forum, Solidarity Youth Movement & Visual Search in association with Pedestrian Pictures.
K.P Sasi started working as a cartoonist while being a student in JNU during the late seventies. He started experimenting with films on 8mm during the early eighties. His films include `America America’, `Gaon Chodab Nahin’, `A Valley Refuses to Die', `We Who Make History' `Living in Fear', `In the Name of Medicine',`Redefining Peace’, `The Source of Life for Sale’ and several other documentaries. Round & Round & Round.. -A play

An Old Bar...a table...and two restless souls sharing their SOLITUDE…

An old man who is expressing his feelings after going through oppression by state and society…
And a young artist who got shunned by the so called “cultured moral police” as they found the expression in his art as blasphemous.
Both of them are recollecting the incidents, in bits and pieces, which has halted their life forever…
Old man has come to term with the trauma he has gone trough and has realized it as the circumference point around which he is living, as the Old Man says... “Insaan ek hi daire ke Irdh Girdh Ghumtien rehte hai… Round & Round & Round.....”

But for the young man it’s just the beginning of getting in to the round circle, as he is still wandering between curves and straight lines… “How can a round eye see so many straight lines?”

Round & Round & Round.. -A play
Sat Aug 24, 8:00 PM
Sifar
Sifar invites you to a Hindi play

“Round & Round & Round…”
Based on Nirmal Varma's “Dedh Inch upar”

We talk about role of energy as the key to growth. Is energy essentially a human-centric issue? How does energy play out in the lives of other living beings? Do their decisions depend so much on energy? The UN Sustainable Development Goal is poised to include Energy as one of the key components to attain sustainability. What are the core tenets of sustainability? As conscious consumers can we drive our energy production and use it to be more ecological? Let’s explore some of these thoughts together in a chat session…

Dr. Nina Sengupta is a Research and Development Consultant, Auroville, India. Her recent focus is: Addressing climate change issues through integrated biodiversity conservation and sustainable development initiatives.

Chronicles of a Temple Painter
Sun Aug 25, 8:00 PM
DOCUMENTARY CIRCLE OF HYDERABD
On August 25th, 2007 a bomb blast at Gokul chat center killed over 40 people in Hyderabad. Papalal, a Hindu temple painter rescued a four year old distraught Muslim girl. Since then he and his wife have taken care of her as their own daughter. This noble family’s world soon turned upside down. Muslim groups have been pressurizing that the child be handed over to a Muslim orphanage so she can be raised as a practicing Muslim, while the local Hindu groups are strongly opposing the idea of a Hindu family raising a Muslim girl.
The story of Papalal’s family is a disturbing account of the freedom with which religious chauvinism and bigotry operate in a country that has secularism for an ideal. It shows how humanism and tolerance—the very qualities required to overcome communal discord and strife—rather than being nurtured are in danger of being subverted. But through all these accounts of hardship, ultimately this is an inspiring tale of humanity, harmony and hope.

PRINCE OF TEARS - Book of Poems
Fri Aug 2, 7:30 PM
Sumanaspati Reddy
"What Hope for Humanity?";

DOCUMENTARY CIRCLE OF HYDERABAD
THE HUMAN FACTOR (Documentary/76 mins/2012) Directed by: Rudradeep Bhattacharjee

Love, Sex and Mocha - 1st show
Sun Aug 18, 6:00 PM
Underdog Entertainment

She flows between rage, love, fear and amusement with ease, moving you to empathize with each character. Even within each emotion she conveys the subtle nuances, those imperceptible shifts in feeling - with clarity.

Guru Jyoti Rout is a gifted choreographer. She has choreographed over 60 original items in the classical Odissi tradition. She was one of the few dancers who had the opportunity to dance in front of Lord Jagannath in Puri.

She is the recipient of an award from World Arts West for her outstanding choreography of Dasavatara at the prestigious Ethnic Dance Festival at San Francisco in 2006. She went on to receive a grant for choreographing an Odissi item for the 2007 Ethnic Dance Festival. She has been honored with several National and International awards from around the globe including Pride of India National Award, Shrestha Odiani, and Shrishetra Mahari Award from Jagannath Puri in 2008 and Nritya Shri and Nritya Shiromani State Awards.

It is fascinating to watch her transform her students into dancers, each with their own unique charm while having the consciousness, sensibility and body language of this ancient art form. She teaches Odissi as a spiritual practice, emphasizing relaxation, right breathing, mindfulness and focus while engaging in rigorous physical practice.

Linking Energy & Ecology: We'll host Ecologist Nina Sengupta, Ph.D on Sunday Aug 25th, 2 - 3pm.
