THE OTHER SONG - Film screening
Sun Mar 24, 7:00 PM
women's march
As a part of "Women's March", Lamakaan is hosting an array of films based on Gender issues and Film maker of today's film, 'THE OTHER SONG'- Saba Dewan.

Synopsis:

In 1935 RasoolanBai the well known singer from Varanasi recorded for the gramophone a thumri that she would never sing again - My breasts are wounded, don't throw flowers at me. A variation of her more famous song - My heart is wounded, don't throw flowers at me, the 1935 recording, never to be repeated, faded from public memory and eventually got lost. More than seventy years later the film travels through Varanasi, Lucknow and Muzzafarpur in Bihar to search for the forgotten song. This journey brings the film face to face with the enigmatic figure of the tawaif, courtesan, baiji and the contested terrain of her art practise and lifestyle. To find the lost other song the film must understand the past and present of the tawaif and unravel the significant transitions that took place in late 19th and early 20th century around the control, censorship and moral policing of female sexualities and cultural expression.

Manjuben Truck driver - Film
Tue Mar 26, 7:00 PM
Sherna Dastur
Lamakaan is hosting an array of films on gender issues as a run upto the Women's day.

This film Manjuben Truck driver made by Sharna Dastur documentary is an emotive and introspective tale of a woman in a man’s world. Miss Manju is a truck driver. Defying India’s strict gender stereotypes, she risks life and limb as she races along India’s narrow, beautiful mountain passes. In a patriarchal society, rough talking, long-trousered Miss Manju has defined herself as a man. Beautifully shot, this is a poetic tale investigating social conformity, gender stereotypes and personal identity. A touching and intimate portrait.
Flashbulbs click as a model in casual men’s slacks, a shirt and a trilby poses for the photographer. She looks just like actor Amitabh Bachchan.
Manjusha is a woman in a man’s world. “Half Shiva, half Shakti – that’s me. Both male and female powers are in me,” she laughs. For most of her life Miss Manju has driven trucks, in what is usually considered an exclusively macho profession. “I used to have 8” she states “I had to sell most of them…” Now she talks like a local ‘dada’, chews pan masala and bosses the local mechanics at the garage.
On the road, Manjusha is equally macho. “I drive like a bastard,” she grins, beeping her horn furiously. “I always like to make sure I’m in front.” Squeezing past oncoming trucks and incautious camels along India’s picturesque but lethal roads, her life is constantly on the line. Deep beneath her in a ravine the mangled remains of another truck remind her exactly how dangerous her job is.

Black Night - Film (32min)
Fri Mar 29, 7:00 PM
Prakash Dharma
Experimental Art Film(32 min)
This is a story of two chess players challenging each others’ game skills. The common friends who are there inmates from chess club do this job.
Rohan is a chess champion accepted by his player friends, because of his attacking style of game and generally winning over everybody. Avinash turns out to be a newcomer to chess club, relatively a shy boy from villages talking reasonably less, but with lot of confidence exhibited from his systematic game. His approach to learn chess independently by studying books, gaining command over end game and systematic analysis of the standard chess openings is his strength. He needs to play relatively less with other players as he is trained from his childhood, under the guidance of different experienced masters, including the early village teacher. Rohan did have the opportunity to play a few games (and occasionally lost), but laughed at his games, ridiculing his attitude to learn game by studying books.
The movie opens with the preparation for the informal tournament between the two. The common friends Vikas and Chirag have unanimously agreed as the arbitrators, in case of any dispute arising in the set of games. Though the games are played with rules, the movie Shows us, how the winning pattern changes in course of time and the emotional shades overtake the situation.
This experimental English art film is of duration 32 mins. with mainly one location, concerned 4 - 5 characters and the actual game of chess…..!
Let us see how it unfolds and ends up!

Telangana-Andhra: Castes - Book
Sat Apr 13, 4:30 PM
Dr. Inukonda Thirumali
The book Telangana-Andhra: Castes, Regions and Politic in Andhra Pradesh by Dr. Inukonda Thirumali, Senior Fellow, ICSSR is an attempt to present the historical reasons for regional stand-off between Andhra and Telangana. The book gives reasons for the signing of Gentlemen’s Agreement that consequently, in his opinion, widened the gulf between the regions. It also establishes the unjust nature of democracy by the faction ridden Congress of Andhra that has maintained regional differences further. The book also discusses the functioning of democracy and dwells on social marginalization and political exclusion of Telangana lower classes whose response to affluent agrarian communities for their monopolization of their resources is the present Telangana movement. This mass involvement in the movement would continue the struggle on long-term basis. However the leadership is in the hands of Telangana regional elite making the lower classes to suspect them. The movement continues, the author predicts, provided this internal conflict is amicably resolved. The author makes a comprehensive statement on the silence the Muslims observe on linguistic state as well as on the possible Telangana state. The book also gives reasons for rise of smaller states and why the Centre maintains apathy.
