C R Bijoy walks us through the age-old history of tribal land struggles. He is a researcher and social activist in India who works with the Campaign for Survival and Dignity, an organisation which acts as a platform for all tribal organisations across India. Listen to the audio for his take on Tribal land struggles.
The 67.7 million people belonging to "Scheduled Tribes" in India are generally considered to be 'Adivasis', literally meaning 'indigenous people' or 'original inhabitants', though the term 'Scheduled Tribes' (STs) is not coterminous with the term 'Adivasis'. Scheduled Tribes is an administrative term used for purposes of 'administering' certain specific constitutional privileges, protection and benefits for specific sections of peoples considered historically disadvantaged and 'backward'.
The Constitution of India, which came into existence on 26 January 1950, prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth and it provides the right to equality, to freedom of religion and to culture and education.
STs are supposedly addressed by as many as 209 Articles and 2 special schedules of the Constitution - Articles and special schedules which are protective and paternalistic.
The Adivasis of India have raised the issue of forest rights to the forefront of the nation's politics. As the state dithers, a process of legislative enactment to address the “historic injustice” has emerged. This article is a narrative that examines the context that precipitated this crisis, the issues, the ground reality, the emergent proposal, and the historic background of the continuing struggles of Adivasis against colonization and internal colonization.
He is a fount of wisdom on local folk culture, and fascinates us with his stories of the past & present, and his ideas for the future. Shri Ravindra Sharma from an early age was a maverick from his conventional family, spending his time with the 'jeengars' [leather craftsmen & wood carvers], learning their techniques & recipes for mineral paints. He learnt brass wax-wire casting from the Ojhas and metal casting from the Ohtaris, and many other craft techniques. Besides learning craft techniques, Guruji roamed the local forests with parrot catchers, attended the 10 day wedding ceremonies of the Mathurias and has documented local traditions such as the Moharram of the local Muslims.
Guruji taught art at a local tribal school for 10 years, teaching the local Kolam boys to express their inner world through art forms of paint and sculpture
Guruji is an artist, a sculptor trained at the Baroda School of Art. His Brahmin family came from the Punjab a generation before him and settled in Adilabad with a small railway catering business. He was a maverick from his childhood, visiting the low caste Nakashi artisan households to watch wooden figures being carved and painted, after which his grandmother would not allow him into the house until he was purified by having a bucket of water poured over him.
This day we are privileged to host filmmaker Paromita Vohra the maker of the films like "Unlimited Girls", "PARTNERS IN CRIME" and "MORALITY TV AND THE LOVING JEHAD".
Today we will be showcasing "PARTNERS IN CRIME" and "MORALITY TV AND THE LOVING JEHAD".
MORALITY TV AND THE LOVING JEHAD looks outside the frames that weave the frenetic tapestry of Breaking News on India’s news channels, to uncover a town’s complex dynamics – the fear of love, the constant scrutiny and control of women’s mobility and sexuality, a history of communal violence, caste brutalisation and feudal mindsets.

This film is an experience of a gendered urban landscape - where the gaze, the voice and the body are at all times under surveillance. What if the multiple surveillances were to be turned upon themselves to observe what is contained in the everyday. The film explores whether there is a sense of ownership, of belonging to the city. Can a woman in the city, - as she continuously negotiates the polarities of anxiety and comfort - be free? Somewhere just under the surface of the `normal’ and in the lives of women cab drivers lie signs of reclamation of space and the gaze.
Gender – Urban Landscape – Gaze – Identity – Imagery
This film made by ARPITA SINHA reflects on the numerous silences that shroud the lives of young, educated, 'independent', 'modern', single women in urban India . Conversations with four such women reveal the inner conflicts, dissonances and a crisis of identity.
From the earliest of times, women have been trampled, their conduct questioned, judged and reprimanded. Ji, Jaisi Aapki Marzi is about giving women the space to speak so that they can erase the silence that they have been condemned to bear. If you "identify" with the characters after watching the play, the effect is purely intended and not accidental.

This Listening Post looks at women in Jazz. It has always been a battle for women to enter into or excel in fields that were dominated by men. Music was no exception. Although women were being accepted in other artistic fields, they faced a male chauvinism in the field of music, in the early years of Jazz. Here we look at some of the women who made a foray into, and then stormed the bastion of the jazz world. Women who were as brilliant in their singing as they were in their song writing or even as instrumentalists in the field of Jazz.

It's a Boy (It's going to be a boy) is a film made by Vani Subramanian. It deals with the public debate around sex-determination in India is decades old, and yet, it is only in the last few years that everyone seems to be talking about the ‘girl-child’ - doctors, religious leaders, the government, the public. Yet, male-female sex ratios are more alarming now than ever before. Why are we unable to reverse the trend? Why does the ‘son’ keep rising in India?
To address some of these questions, IT’S A BOY! (IT’S GOING TO BE A BOY) travels to Bombay, Delhi, Benares and Shillong. Going back in time to reveal how the current crisis of sex ratios had been foretold by those on the forefront of the campaigns against sex determination and pre-selection. Assessing government initiatives, looking beyond the rhetoric, and using the lens of culture to explore common beliefs about daughters and sons within the family, men and women in society.
Secodn film "Blood on my Hands" looks at how a woman's menstrual cycle is altered from being a marker of her fertility to something that renders her untouchable and hence subject to multiple taboos and regulations. As an individual, a woman or young girl is isolated in her struggle to come to terms with the
transformations in her body.
In this film "A body that will speak", a filmmaker, a university student, an entrepreneur and a radio jockey. Women, who feel hungry, eat, grow fat and feel anxious about it. A film about not being perfect. A film about the never ending attempts to make the body "speak for the self in a meaningful and powerful way." A journey to move beyond disorders and discover the real women battling the fantasies around and within them.
This film is made by Sukanya Sen and Pawas Bisht.
In Iraq, there is 1 soldier for every 166 civilians. In Kashmir, there is 1 for every 20. A Hizbul Mujaheddin ex-militant, his son- a footballer, an Argentinean football coach and his sparkling Brazilian wife grapple with life on the streets of Kashmir. A Kashmiri kid dreams to play football in Brazil, but life in a silent war gets in the way.
Inshallah, Football is about 18-year-old Basharat Baba, known as "Basha". His father, Bashir, was a much-wanted leader of the armed group Hizbul Mujahideen. When he left his home in Kashmir to join the training camps in Pakistan in the early 1990s, his son Basharat was barely two months old.
Basharat belongs to a new generation of Kashmiris, having grown up under the shadow of a protracted conflict. His passion is football, and he has been coached by Juan Marcos Troia, an Argentinean national and FIFA accredited football coach by profession. Marcos aspires to breed world class players from Kashmir; he and his wife, being attached to both Basha and Kashmir, migrate to Srinagar with their three daughters to take up Basha's cause.
'Ismat Ke Afsaanay' is a glimpse into the daily life of households and especially their women as seen by Ismat Chughtai. The stories are characterised by their ability to go deep into the very skins of their characters and bring out all their weaknesses, strengths, their ordinariness and their uniqueness. Where most people would look onto the street and see a multitude of passing by, Ismat Chughtai had the ability to see people and appreciate the beauty of each individual as a whole - freckles, frailties and all: whether it be the fascination of a young girl with the process of childbirth as seen in 'Chui-Mui' ('Touch-Me-Not'), or the haplessness of a virtuous, God-fearing man when faced by his devil-may-care house-keeper in 'Gharwaali' (Home Maker), or the veiled tug-of-war between a fair bride and her dark groom in 'Ghoonghat' (The Veil), or for that matter the 'tu-tu,main-main' (war of words) between a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law in 'Saas' (Mother-In-Law). Each one of these characters belong to us. They are recognizable as uncle, aunt, father, mother, brother, sister, husband, wife, neighbor and perhaps that is what makes them so endearing and their reality so real to us.
The stories or Afsaanay, do not judge. They just hold a mirror to society; to the people around us and allow us the ability to experience the truth of each one.
Mandechchula or Manda-hechchula Katha is a little-known but tremendously thrilling and energetic narrative performance set to infectious rhythmic beats, soaring choral accompaniment and trance-inducing emotional outpourings.
The traditional herdsmen of the Deccan, who rear mainly sheep and goats, have their own great folklore and mythology. These vivid epic-narratives of the Gollas, Kurumas and similar caste denominations are sung and performed by professional artiste-troupes belonging to a set of sub-castes who depend on the Gollas etc. for their livelihoods.
The Mandechchulollu (or the performers who help the herds multiply) are one such community. Found in Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammam, the Mandechchus have given a distinct performative spin and infectious energy to the tales of the great Golla-Yadava kings of yore and the stories associated with the great folk-hero and god of the rural Deccan, Mallanna (called Khandoba in Maharashtra and Mailara Deva in Karnataka).
This is a specially brought in show (by Sumanaspati Reddy and Dr. Raj Mohammad) to introduce the urban audience of Hyderabad to the vivacity of one of our truly vibrant and still-surviving folk performative traditions. And also to give a peep into how intimately it is connected with the life- pattern of a great and proud community.

"A Short Film About..." takes a look at how some urban Indian women view their breasts. Affected by other’s perceptions, women mostly find themselves looking at their breasts through a male perspective. Whether in the form of media images of impossible perfection or an adolescent need to gain male approval and attention or just the opposite - to repel male advances - the male gaze is ever present in one form or the other.
The film looks at how a woman's menstrual cycle is altered from being a marker of her fertility to something that renders her untouchable and hence subject to multiple taboos and regulations. As an individual, a woman or young girl is isolated in her struggle to come to terms with the transformations in her body.
This docu is made by 3 film makers SURABHI SARAL, MANAK MATIYANI & ANANDANA KAPUR.
The film attempts to examine the attitudes towards sexuality of school/college going adolescents from different cities in their everyday life.
The film attempts to represent the struggles and aspirations of thousands of sexworkers who constitute the DMSC (Durbar Mahila Samanyay Committee or the Durbar Women’s Collaborative Committee) an initiative that emerged from the Shonagachi HIV/AIDS Intervention Project. A collective of men, women and transgendered sexworkers, DMSC demands decriminalization of adult sex work and the right to form a trade union.
World Premier at the AWID's 9th International Forum on Women's Rights and Development: "Re-inventing Globalization" at Guadalajara, Mexico.
The Film locates the life and work of a woman political activist in her everyday existence, the relationships she lives out at home and in her work and the political affiliations she tries to hold together, even as they are subjected to multiple stresses. Through her journey of recovering her grandmother’s history for a different generation of women, in a poignant reminder of the ephemeral nature of memory, and the loss of remembrance itself, she cannot often recall the very event that led to her own political transformation, even as it is etched in the memories of so many others who outlived the tragedy of that event, or heard about it then, and over the many decades thereafter.
A film on the struggle of rural Muslim women, in particular Daud Sherifa Khanam, to fight the sexist rulings of the conventional jamaat (a group of Islamic male elders who decide on issues of marriage, dowry, divorce etc) and patriarchal social order in Tamil Nadu.

The film is basically about the resilience of a young girl as she tries to stay true to her beliefs.
The making of the film has followed a different process. There are no trained actors in this film nor is there a single director. The actors are members of the community itself. The script was based and adapted from a short story called, "Fishy Magic" written by Rinchin and the film was made as a collective effort where everyone involved has contributed in some way to the development, direction and execution of the script of the film.
The film was produced by ektara collective. Ektara Collective is an independent, autonomous, non funded group of individuals based in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The main purpose of the group is to combine creative efforts and imagination and collaborate with other like-minded people to successfully implement them.

Synopsis:
In 1935 RasoolanBai the well known singer from Varanasi recorded for the gramophone a thumri that she would never sing again - My breasts are wounded, don't throw flowers at me. A variation of her more famous song - My heart is wounded, don't throw flowers at me, the 1935 recording, never to be repeated, faded from public memory and eventually got lost. More than seventy years later the film travels through Varanasi, Lucknow and Muzzafarpur in Bihar to search for the forgotten song. This journey brings the film face to face with the enigmatic figure of the tawaif, courtesan, baiji and the contested terrain of her art practise and lifestyle. To find the lost other song the film must understand the past and present of the tawaif and unravel the significant transitions that took place in late 19th and early 20th century around the control, censorship and moral policing of female sexualities and cultural expression.
This film Manjuben Truck driver made by Sharna Dastur documentary is an emotive and introspective tale of a woman in a man’s world. Miss Manju is a truck driver. Defying India’s strict gender stereotypes, she risks life and limb as she races along India’s narrow, beautiful mountain passes. In a patriarchal society, rough talking, long-trousered Miss Manju has defined herself as a man. Beautifully shot, this is a poetic tale investigating social conformity, gender stereotypes and personal identity. A touching and intimate portrait.
Flashbulbs click as a model in casual men’s slacks, a shirt and a trilby poses for the photographer. She looks just like actor Amitabh Bachchan.
Manjusha is a woman in a man’s world. “Half Shiva, half Shakti – that’s me. Both male and female powers are in me,” she laughs. For most of her life Miss Manju has driven trucks, in what is usually considered an exclusively macho profession. “I used to have 8” she states “I had to sell most of them…” Now she talks like a local ‘dada’, chews pan masala and bosses the local mechanics at the garage.
On the road, Manjusha is equally macho. “I drive like a bastard,” she grins, beeping her horn furiously. “I always like to make sure I’m in front.” Squeezing past oncoming trucks and incautious camels along India’s picturesque but lethal roads, her life is constantly on the line. Deep beneath her in a ravine the mangled remains of another truck remind her exactly how dangerous her job is.

This is a story of two chess players challenging each others’ game skills. The common friends who are there inmates from chess club do this job.
Rohan is a chess champion accepted by his player friends, because of his attacking style of game and generally winning over everybody. Avinash turns out to be a newcomer to chess club, relatively a shy boy from villages talking reasonably less, but with lot of confidence exhibited from his systematic game. His approach to learn chess independently by studying books, gaining command over end game and systematic analysis of the standard chess openings is his strength. He needs to play relatively less with other players as he is trained from his childhood, under the guidance of different experienced masters, including the early village teacher. Rohan did have the opportunity to play a few games (and occasionally lost), but laughed at his games, ridiculing his attitude to learn game by studying books.
The movie opens with the preparation for the informal tournament between the two. The common friends Vikas and Chirag have unanimously agreed as the arbitrators, in case of any dispute arising in the set of games. Though the games are played with rules, the movie Shows us, how the winning pattern changes in course of time and the emotional shades overtake the situation.
This experimental English art film is of duration 32 mins. with mainly one location, concerned 4 - 5 characters and the actual game of chess…..!
Let us see how it unfolds and ends up!
The poets who will be participating are:
1. Fatema Shahnaz (English)
2. Mona Hyderabadi (Urdu)
3. Sridala Swami (English)
4. Vasanth Kannabiran (English, Telugu)
5. Tasneem Johar (Urdu)
