The Goodness Barter
Sun Jan 27, 10:30 AM
Monica Bansal
The goodness barter

"They say things that you own, end up owning you"

If you hoard a lot of things that you don't use anymore or if you're a victim of extreme consumption and and given to regret it later or you think someone else could make use of the things you own in a better way, come to the 'Goodness Barter'.

Bring your old/new things and barter them with others. What doesn't get exchanged, can go to your favourite charity. Why buy from the market when you can conserve resources by looking into the community around?

Have a dog collar that late Tommy used to wear? How about give it to an Animal Shelter that need it more.

Come to the event, and 'let go' of your unused possessions and find the ones that you need.

Rules:

1) You have to arrange for your own display/mats/showcase racks
2) No business promotion allowed
3) You cannot 'sell' for the purpose of making a profit

All of us have tons of things/commodities that we don't use anymore, or never used. We get into the rut of 'consumption and hoarding' materials that could be better used by someone else. So the idea is to organize a fair where people can bring in their never used/overused or no-more to be used items and barter with the ones that others have brought. Whatever remains goes to a charity of their choice.

For eg. if someone has dog collars/bowls from a pet they used to have but it passed away then someone else could use it for their pet or they can donate it to blue cross.

The focus of this event will not be selling and making profits but promoting the idea of sharing and 'letting go' of material goods for the benefit of others.

Josh Malihabadi Ke Marsiye
Tue Jan 29, 7:30 PM
Syed M. Shahed
A discussion/talk in Urdu, Hindi and English on Josh Malihabadi's Marsias. Josh’s marsias usually deal with a major theme each – “Zindagi aur Maut” has a theme of “ego, life and death”, “Tuloo e Fikr” of “the dawn of civilization”, “Azmat e Insaan” of “human achievement” etc. In each case the first half of the marsia is entirely secular and will constitute the major part of the discussion. After dealing with the chosen theme, Josh makes a beautiful and smooth transition to the story of Karbala. His narrative of Karbala is not one of mourning but one of celebration of resistance and
defiance of unjust power even in the face of certain death. Some portions of the marsia after the transition to the story of Karbala deal with a profuse and linguistically superb praise of Husain.

BUDRUS - A Palestine film
Wed Jan 30, 7:00 PM
Sumanaspati Reddy
Winner of the 2012 PUMA Creative Impact Award for making the most significant positive social or environmental impact ------- BUDRUS ------- examines one West Bank town’s reaction to Israel’s construction of the security barrier. The town, with a population of 1,500, was set to be divided and encircled by the barrier, losing 300 acres of land and 3,000 olive trees. These trees were not only critical for economic survival but also sacred to the town’s intergenerational history.

The documentary film tells the story of Ayed Morrar, a Palestinian whose work for Fatah had led to five detentions in Israeli jails, but whose momentous strategic decision that the barrier would be best opposed by nonviolent resistance had far-reaching ramifications.

" what makes the Palestinian peaceniks of Budrus different is that they explicitly define their movement in opposition to violence, condemning even stone—throwing, long a symbol of Palestinian resistance. Also unique: women in Budrus asked to march at the front of the protests, as did Israeli and international peace activists"

Art Collective 2 - For two days on Sat 2nd - Sun 3rd Feb

Given the limited number of respectable events and art spaces in the city, it would be
unfair for talented and creative people to miss out on opportunities. And so, providing
a platform to amateur as well as professional artists, Collective 2 will be a place for
interaction of myriad types of arts like music, photography, graffiti, painting, literature,
dance, theatre and so on.

The second edition is an endeavor to place all the art forms under one roof, and this
“collective” effort is a brainchild of a group of friends who came together from different
works of art and got inspired over a cup of “chai,” to further inspire fellow eccentrics and art aficionados.

So, if you would like to be noticed for your talent or want to be immersed in the true
culture and essence of Hyderabad, then this is where you should be.

Taking Root - Wangari Maathai
Sun Feb 3, 6:30 PM
Nandkishor Boddu
TAKING ROOT tells the story of the Green Belt Movement of Kenya and its founder Wangari Maathai, the first environmentalist and first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Professor Maathai discovered her life's work by reconnecting with the rural women with whom she had grown up. They told her they were walking long distances for firewood, clean water was scarce, the soil was disappearing from their fields, and their children were suffering from malnutrition.
'Well, why not plant trees?' Maathai suggested. These women found themselves working successively against deforestation, poverty, ignorance, embedded economic interests, and government corruption, until they became a national political force that helped to bring down Kenya's 24-year dictatorship.
Through TV footage and chilling first person accounts, TAKING ROOT documents the dramatic confrontations of the 1980s and '90s and captures Maathai's infectious determination and unwavering courage. Cinema verité footage of the tree nurseries and the women and children who tend them brings to life the confidence and
joy of people working to improve their own lives and ensure the future and vitality of
their land.
TAKING ROOT captures a world-view in which nothing is perceived as impossible and presents an awe-inspiring profile of Maathai's thirty-year journey of courage to protect the integrally connected issues of the environment, human rights, and democracy.

RDBO stands for Rang De Box Office. It is an intiative of the Rang De Hyderabad Chapter. The aim of Rang De Hyderabad Chapter is to screen a documentary that deals with social issues that our planet faces today. These films are made by filmmakers of all nationalities who want to shine a spotlight on social issues ranging from gender injustices, the climate change to the suicide of farmers in rural areas of India. Our will is two-fold: to screen these films for free (the audience is not charged)& then to have a discussion about the topic of the documentary among the audience after the screening.

A presentation at an Icarus Session is 140 seconds long. You can go shorter, but not a second longer. You can use slides, or handouts, or even better, just bring your enthusiasm. Videotape it if you like.

The assignment: Tell the group about your art. What have you created? What frightened you? What matters?

Check out the principles of the Icarus Session before you come: http://www.squidoo.com/IcarusSession and be sure to contact the organizer if you're hoping to speak.

Book Launch:The Power of Promise
Tue Feb 12, 7:00 PM
M.V. Ramana
The Power of Promise: Examining Nuclear Energy in India (Penguin Books, December 2012) is written by Physicist and writer, M.V. Ramana, of the Nuclear Futures Laboratory and the Program on Science and Global Security, Princeton University. The book offers a detailed narrative of the evolution of India s nuclear energy programme, examining different aspects of the nuclear energy programme and the claims of success made on its behalf. These claims include the assertion that nuclear power is possibly the most important source of energy for India and that it is safe, environmentally benign, and cheap. This dream of a nuclear powered India has been supported by huge financial budgets and high level political commitment for over six decades.

The Power of Promise shows that nuclear power has been more expensive than conventional forms of electricity generation, that the ever-present risk of catastrophic accidents is heightened by observed organizational inadequacies at nuclear facilities, and that existing nuclear fuel cycle facilities have been correlated with impacts on public health and the environment. The book offers detailed information and analysis that should serve to deepen the debate about whether India should indeed embark on a massive nuclear programme.

Book Launch Follows a Panel discussion on 'Nuclear Energy in India' with panelists Anant Mariganti (Right to the City Foundation & Hyderabad Urban Labs), C. Rammanohar Reddy (editor, Economic and Political Weekly) and A. Gopalakrishnan (former Chairman, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board), Prof. Arvind Susarla (Hyderabad Central University)

Jan Samwaad - A Musical Movement
Sat Feb 16, 6:00 PM
Jan Samwaad
Jan Samwaad(Dialoguing with the people) is a musical movement which tries to engage its audience into social and political issues plaguing our society and our times. These renditions, simple in form yet profound in essence, are a melange of personal and social issues encouraging the audience to ponder over some fundamental, stereotypical and preconceived societal concerns. During these conversations with the masses Jan Samwaad questions whether it is worth spending the entire life trying to find God or the so called Eternal or Divine without lending attention to the issues that we face in our daily life. Jan Samwaad is a mixed bag of songs that touch upon a variety of social predicaments be it the very relevant issue of illegal and unjust land acquisition from a farmer whose life is but synonymous to drudgery to the quest of a newly married innocent young girl to find a sojourn for herself as she embarks upon an endless journey of responsibilities and expectations. The hopelessness and despair that is so marked of today’s common man and his experiences owing to a variety of issues is something that genuinely concerns Jan Samwaad. It is in this wake of despondency that the listeners are egged to rethink if the efforts to find an “external” source of peace or power are worthwhile at all. Recognizing the need to restore communal harmony in a society with disintegrating values, Jan Samwaad seeks to challenge the motives of the perpetrators of communal hatred who still exist amongst us, even though they are not positioned in the power centre. Along this journey Jan Samwaad uses the “traditional”, but yes, only to question the “traditional” and employ the “typical” to disengage from it and look at the “atypical”.

The talk traces the origin of Urdu and explores the realm of ,what was,or is early Urdu. It also brings forth the myth and realities around
the terms Urdu and Hindi, and, that the historical spaces occupied by Urdu and Hindi or Hindavi were not mutually exclusive but rather both are claimants to a single Linguistic and Literary tradition.

The wisest fool on earth

Written by R Raj Rao | Enacted by Feroze

"The Wisest fool on earth" locked inside the bathroom and he still has some scrap of the feeling of being wanted. Whether his belief stays or withers away to repeat history is the twist that's kept for the last.

But who put him in the loo and what hopes does he have in store (of getting out)?

Come witness a tale of failure, frustration, freedom and fulfillment with humor all through.
