Set in the crumbling environs of Calcutta, LABOUR OF LOVE is a lyrical unfolding of two ordinary lives suspended in the duress of a spiralling recession. They are married to a cycle of work and domestic routine, and long stretches of waiting in the silence of an empty house. They share each other's solitude in pursuit of a distant dream that visits them briefly every morning.
Incorporating poignant political undertones, director Aditya Vikram Sengupta creates a stylistically beautiful film that depicts the challenges of sustaining love in a fast transitioning world via a simultaneous sensation of breathlessness and space.

About the Book: In many parts of the country, the inhuman practice of manual scavenging continues to thrive in spite of a law banning it. Moreover, the people forced to carry out this degrading work remain invisible to the rest of us, pushed to the margins of society without any recourse to help or hope. UNSEEN, based on over a decade of research unveils the horrific plight of manual scavengers across 12 states in the country and also recording their ongoing ftruggle for self empowerment.
It is Heartrending....will deeply unsettle those who value equality and respect for human beings. Written with sypathy, insight, humour, and overwhelming humanity.
In the documentary Living Without Money we meet Heidemarie Schwermer, a former teacher and psychoterapist from Germany, who one day decided to stop using money and live a life based on exchanging favors.
After the Film we'll have a discussion and a short presentation on the possibility of a moneyless economic system.
In an hour long monologue, Rajkumar tells us about his unremarkable life in his nondescript village and the five grains of sugar – the five people – who have stood out in this drab life for reasons stranger than fiction. The filmy mother; her poet brother Pundaleek; Raghu, the school hero; old man Radhey; and the anonymous ‘Truckwala dost’ . As Rajkumar talks, the five grains become a single life-game that he has been unknowingly playing for years…and Rajkumar realizes that everyone has a story inside them.

Holmes is the co-founder and co-director of Fight for the Future, an online activism group best known for its role in winning Net Neutrality in the US in 2015 and defeating the American Internet censorship bills SOPA & PIPA in 2012. This will be a casual and open talk on how net neutrality was won in the US, India and Europe, and what these victories mean for the future of activism—on any and every important issue facing the world.
If you participated in the fight for net neutrality in India—or any other successful activism campaign—come ready to tell your story.
Our goal—always—is to build tech-enhanced campaigns that resonate with millions of people, enabling them to consolidate their power and win historic changes thought to be impossible. In 2012 we organized the largest online protest in history, an internet-wide strike against web censorship which defeated the SOPA and PIPA bills. More recently, our Battle for the Net campaign drove nearly four million people to contact the FCC resulting in the game-changing passage of net neutrality rules (a “First Amendment” for the Internet).

"ACHARYA TARTUFFE"
a hilarious adaptation of Moliere's Le TARTUFFE in Hindi
Produced by Rathna Shekar Reddy
Directed by Nasreen Ishaque
Date: 08th October 2016
Time: 7.30pm
Venue: Lamakaan, Hyderabad.
Acharya Tartuffe
“Acharya Tartuffe” is a Hindi adaptation of Moliere’s controversial play ‘Le Tartuffe’, meaning the impostor, or the hypocrite. Written in 1664 the play sheds light on hypocrisy prevailing in the society, especially on the matters of religion and morality.
Omkaar, a wealthy businessman, gets influenced by a mysterious godman named Tartuffe and brings him home. Reeling under the spell of Tartuffe, he grows eccentric to an alarming level. His hapless victims are his own son and daughter. The son gets disowned and the daughter is to be married to the godman. The whole household gets caught in this whirlwind generated by the shrewd maneuvering of the holy man. Any reasoning on part of his family members proves futile. The loud mouth servants are the only ones who could voice their opinions on the fanatical events taking place in the house. Emboldened, Tartuffe slyly creeps closer to Kaamini, Omkaar’s wife, to quench his lustful cravings. Gripped with religious fervor, Omkaar has become too ridiculous to sense the impending threats. Eventually his incessant farcical antics lead him to lose his property to Tartuffe. However a timely tell a tale by Tartuffe’s disciple Chunni Lal brings to light the dark and evil past of the godman.

Synopsis:
Tirupur aka Dollar City, well known for its thousands of export oriented garment hosiery units
and millions of migrant workers, symbolizes a development model where the state machinery,
exporters, small and big entrepreneurs, commission agents, trade unionists and workers converge
to prioritize export and to earn dollars by ignoring, marginalizing and eventually breaking the
laws that protect the environment and workers’ rights.
The film provides an inside view of a successful economic system where there is connivance and
consensus between the masters, mediators and the workers, where the ambitions and loyalties
collapse, where the rights become a privilege, where duty becomes an opportunity and where
one’s desperation is another’s prospect.
The fact that there has not been a workers’ strike in Tirupur in the past 20 years, as proudly
expressed by an exporter in the film, can be seen as classic example of the Gramscian idea of
manufacture of consent.

The discussion forum ‘In Defense of Reason’ in its pursuit to promote reason and rationality in the society is going to screen one of Chaplin’s gems ‘Modern Times.’ The time in the movie is during the Great Depression when Chaplin’s iconic Tramp character embodies the suffering of the poor industrial worker who also happens to be generous and sensible apart from being hilariously naive. Chaplin was very attentive to the economic and social problems of his day and it becomes clear from the theme of the movie which is a comment on alienation and dehumanization of laborers inherent in capitalism. Chaplin also declared in 1931, “Unemployment is the key question. Machines should improve the well-being of humanity, instead of causing tragedy and unemployment.”
Where theory would make long speeches about these social issues, Chaplin uses humor to better display the class society with its contradictions and exploitation of man by man. The relevance of this film even today is unmatched.
The idea is to watch and enjoy the movie together followed by an informal open discussion session on its various socio-economic and aesthetic aspects. You all are most welcome to attend the screening.

1. KHOL DO
“Khol Do” is one of the most famous and controversial stories by writer Saadat Hasan Manto (1912-1955) . It is one of the masterpiece depicting the effects of violence during the partition of India on the people of the land. But unlike many others, Manto does not see the perpetrators as Hindu or Muslim, Hindustanis or Pakistanis, he just sees and depicts them as human beings with all their wilderness and barbarity.
2. THANDA GOSHT
Thanda Gosht is a non-fiction short story written by Saadat Hasan Manto.
The story is about the communal violence of 1947. Ishwar Singh, a Sikh fails to make love to his mistress Kalwant. She suspects him of infidelity and in a fit of jealousy stabs him with his own dagger. While dying, Ishwar Singh admits his crime getting involved in riots which broke in his village killing a Muslim family with same dagger and abducting a Muslim girl after breaking in their house and attempting rape with her.

Synopsis: Raktim returns to his home town in the Brahmaputra valley, after a break of several years. He finds it hard to recognise the changed values of people, even of those he knew very closely at one time. As Raktim goes across the city on his scooter, he picks up the tales of three distinct characters, a young rickshaw puller, a woman with a daughter and an old fisherman, all of whom happen to be named Bokul. The film explores a pattern that emerges from the lives of the three characters as seen by an outsider who was once an insider. Changing realities, shifts in values and displacement of people point to this pattern.

Anand Patwardhan has been making and screening documentary films as an extension of his socio-political activism, for over forty years now. In what appears to be a rare encounter between two filmmakers, R.V. Ramani, a cinematographer and an auteur in his own right, decides to engage in a ‘visual conversation’ with Anand Patwardhan, as the latter goes about screening his films across diverse audiences in the country. The film unfolds a range of poignant perspectives around Anand’s screening events and seems to raise primary questions in documentary filmmaking and representational politics.

Hyderabad Urban Lab brings to Lamakaan, the second in the series of conversations about what it means to be urban in the 21st century.
This conversation titled 'Faith and the City' is set up as a structured exchange between Dr. Sarah Waheed, Professor of History at Davidson College in North Carolina, USA and Dr. Anant Maringanti, Director of Hyderabad Urban Lab. Dr. Waheed, will bring insights from her work on gender, religion, and anxieties of being in transnational urban contexts. Dr. Maringanti will bring his work on social justice and the role of faith in organizing. The broader goal of the conversation is to open up the taken for granted understandings of faith and religion as relationships to the self, to the other and to our collective existence in rapidly altering urban setttings.
As last time, we promise good music and great opening gambits. It is for you to make it a great conversation.

'MARYAADA…'
The unspoken boundary of the psyche; the silent barrier of our hearts and souls. Some dedicate their entire lives to preserving it, sacrificing their passions and crushing the very feelings and emotions that make them question the ideals they have bound themselves and those who love them in and in the process earn the epithet of ‘Maryaada Purushottam’. While others spend their lives straining beneath the weight of the heavy ideals imposed on them by society - struggling to break free.
But what lies beyond? Beyond definitions of right or wrong; good or evil; ugly or beautiful – when the robes handed down over centuries of ‘civilized’ society are stripped away – what is real? Is it necessary to choose one truth: either that of the victor or the vanquished? Can it be that each of us gets to choose our own truth and each is equally real?
