MAKING OF ECOFRIENDLY CLAYGANESH
Sun Aug 28, 12:30 PM
society for the research and environmental education
Ganesha Chaturthi is the Hindu festival celebrated on the birthday (rebirth) of Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati. Chaturthi was being celebrated as a public event in Pune since the times of Shivaji (1630-1680). In 1893, Lokmanya Tilak transformed the annual domestic festival into a large, well-organized public event in order to exercise control over the population, asthe British discouraged social and political gatherings (wikipedia). Their aim is good but today political and environmental issues are changed now a days making ganesh idols with plaster of paris The most serious impact of the festival on the environment is due to the immersion of idols made of Plaster of Paris into lakes, rivers and the sea.plaster of paris is non-biodegradable, and insoluble in water. Moreover, the chemical paints used to adorn these plaster idols themselves contain heavy metals like mercury and cadmium, causing water pollution and also soil pollution. Actually the ganesh idol should be made with clay because we must protect our environment that is the reason we have to bring clay from river bank or lake after festival we shoul return to it by immertion. we are praying ganesh with near about 22 leaves that specific plants protect our soil fertility and also children know about plants so that we can protect our soil fertility and productivity indirectly. Apart fron traditional stories lot of science is there in ganesh festival. It is easy to making of ganesh with clay and eco-friendly Ganesh. It is our resposibility to save our environment

we will demonstrate the making of clay ganesh

In the belly of the beast
Tue Aug 30, 6:30 PM
Hyderabad Urban Lab
[Date Blocked] In the belly of the beast is a freewheeling conversation anchored by Anant Maringanti on what it means to be Urban in the 21st century. It will draw on examples from the experience of researching, writing, teaching and community engagement at Hyderabad Urban Lab. Thematically, much of this work centres around waste, infrastructure and informal work, water and transportation, ageing, women's work. But the goal of the conversation is to raise one central question and find plausible answers: how should we be speaking to each other in the 21st century Hyderabad. This implies of course that the conversation would be around the conceptual tools, technologies and organizational practices. It would be around identity, difference, deprivation, injury and exploitation. The goal is to even tentatively forge new ideas to shape our shared lives.

an absurdist drama and dream play of sorts. A woman dreams about the
upcoming trial of the man who sexually assaulted (and possibly raped)

piece focuses on the woman's subconscious and begs the question "Is
the woman responsible for the attack against her?" and throws a
critical eye onto court practices that allow such personal questions
as what clothing the woman was wearing to be asked within the
courtroom.

Oscar Wilde's "THE HAPPY PRINCE"
(A Children's play in English )

Directed by Nasreen Ishaque

Date: 04th September 2016
Time: 6.00pm
Duration: 30 minutes
Venue: Lamakaan, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.

Ticket Rs 100/-

The Happy Prince

“The Happy Prince” is a short fairy tale written by the great Irish writer Oscar Wilde. A Prince lived within the four walls of his palace, unaware of sorrows and miseries of the world. His loving parents made sure that he never comes across any hardships. However, when he was no more, a golden statue with sapphires and rubies was built in his memory and was placed on a high pedestal. Standing high above, for the first time ever, the happy Prince saw the pain and sufferings of the poor people. He was full of regret and his soul was crying to help them. Fortunately a little swallow bird that was travelling to Egypt to escape the approaching winter heard his request and agreed to help.

Starting with sapphires and rubies, the little bird got busy with removing the golden leaves gilded on the body and distributed them among the poor as requested by the happy Prince. With all the gems and gold gone, the black metal statue was quiet an unpleasant sight. But the soul of happy Prince was rejoicing as he had tasted true happiness. Meanwhile winter had arrived. The little swallow bird was not able to resume his flight to Egypt as it was too late. The severe winter claimed his life. That very moment the heart of the happy Prince cracked in pain. An angel on an errand to find the two most precious things in the world brought back to heaven the broken heart and the swallow bird. God acknowledged most benevolently, the preciousness of both. The happy Prince and swallow bird lived happily forever, in his golden abode and garden of paradise.

Biryani Aur Haleem
Sun Sep 4, 7:30 PM
Sutradhar Group
Sutradhar's Biryani aur Haleem is an adaptation into Deccani of Hugh Chesterman's 'The Pie & The Tart'. The play has been directed by Mohit & Deepti.
The world we live in is a very strange place. Some eat to live and some live to eat. In one way or another our lives revolve around food: some cook; some eat; some store it ; some hoard it; some starve for it; some steal it..Our very survival depends on food. That is what the two main characters of this play are trying to do; survive another day in their lives. Salim & Javed are two beggars; like any other; they meet on a street like any other; on a day like any other. But what results is hilarity like never before. The two share their stories; their ‘areas’; and their modus operandi. As they go from street to street and house to house pleading to people’s sense of charity, they chance upon the home of Ismail Bhai & his wife Pasha Bi. Ismail Bhai is a well known cook who has been invited by a Nawaab to display his culinary skills. Eager to impress the nawaab, he prepares a special Biryani and instructs his wife to hand it over to the delivery boy he sends. The plan is overheard by the two hungry friends, who decide to change the route of the Biryani to their hungry stomachs instead of the Nawaab’s. What becomes of Salim, Javed & the Biryani? Find out in Sutradhar's Biryani aur Haleem.

Is Caste Annihilation Possible?
Tue Sep 6, 7:30 PM
Parag Verma and Shishir Gupta
The upsurge in atrocities against Dalits in recent years has punctured the claims of all round development by Indian rulers as they celebrate the 70th year of independence. The institutional murder of Rohith Vemula and the heinous atrocity against the Dalit youths in Gujarat by Hindutva cow vigilantes and many other oppressive incidents against Dalits across the country makes it clear that the Dalits belonging to poor and working class are the main targets of the Brahmanical fascist onslaught. It is against this backdrop that we are organizing a discussion on the annihilation of caste which any justice-loving person must aspire for.

Though attempts toward annihilation of caste have been made since the colonial era, with significant contributions from social reformers like Phule, Periyar and Ambedkar and the working class and communist movements too gave prominent place to annihilation of caste on their agenda, the sad truth is that such attempts have so far not been proven to be effective in so far as the annihilation of caste is concerned. It is high time we made a critical appraisal of the past attempts and came up with a comprehensive plan of action which should not only have a long term vision but also some immediate action points.

As part of a radical solution to the caste question we need to go to the roots and find out the scientific explanation of the origin of caste, how it evolved in different phases in Indian society and why does it continue to prevail in the Indian society which has undergone a transformation from a semi-feudal to a capitalist social formation in recent decades. We need to ask: which are the forces benefitting from the continued existence of caste and whose interest is it serving? Only then we can find out a comprehensive project of caste annihilation.

We will try to find answers to these questions in our discussion on the topic ‘Is Annihilation of Caste Possible?’ on Sep 6, 2016 in Lamakaan, Hyderabad. You are all welcome to join the discussion!

GM Food in your daily tadka or avakaya - Are you Worried

Talk and Discussion on Genetically Modified Mustard

Led by Dr.Ramanjaneyulu from Centre for Sustainable Agriculture.

September 10th(Saturday), 5-7 pm

Venue: Lamakaan, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad

Globally people have serious concerns about effects on health and environment over Genetically Modified Food crops and not many have been approved so far. In India, an attempt to commercialise Bt Brinjal faced with a moratorium in 2009 after public consultation. But now, GM Mustard is coming up for approval in September/October! It is shrouded in secrecy, with the government keeping data away from public domain. Mustard is a very important food crop consumed in many forms - oil, seed, mustard paste, pickles like avakaya, and as a leafy vegetable.

Will you be worried and act on it now? Or will you wait until it is too late? Should we not question the faulty and flawed process of the regulators ? These and many more, are the questions being asked by many people across India right now. Dr. G.V Ramanjaneyulu will make a presentation on GM crops, particularly mustard, and speak about the concerns. This will be followed by an interactive discussion.

Paradoxes of a Global City
Sun Sep 11, 3:00 PM
P Maharshi
Big cities in India have big dreams. The dream to be called a global city. The images about India's economic growth and development invariably are the images of big cities. Big Indian cities are complex. What you see is not usually what you get.

The 'booming' big cities like Hyderabad are filled with paradoxes and contradictions. There is so much incomprehensible about big Indian cities. They have to be understood to understand cities and the people.

The talk covers the not-so-easily comprehensible and visible developments and systems that are involved behind a big city. It covers the contradictions and paradoxes by taking the case of a 'global city' called Hyderabad.

"ACHARYA TARTUFFE"(A play in Hindi)
an adaptation of Moliere's TARTUFFE

Produced by Rathna Shekar Reddy

Directed by Nasreen Ishaque

Acharya Tartuffe
“Acharya Tartuffe” is a Hindi adaptation of Moliere’s controversial play ‘Le Tartuffe’, meaning the impostor, or the hypocrite. Written in 1664 the play sheds light on hypocrisy prevailing in the society, especially on the matters of religion and morality.

Omkaar, a wealthy businessman, gets influenced by a mysterious godman named Tartuffe and brings him home. Reeling under the spell of Tartuffe, he grows eccentric to an alarming level. His hapless victims are his own son and daughter. The son gets disowned and the daughter is to be married to the godman. The whole household gets caught in this whirlwind generated by the shrewd maneuvering of the holy man. Any reasoning on part of his family members proves futile. The loud mouth servants are the only ones who could voice their opinions on the fanatical events taking place in the house. Emboldened, Tartuffe slyly creeps closer to Kaamini, Omkaar’s wife, to quench his lustful cravings. Gripped with religious fervor, Omkaar has become too ridiculous to sense the impending threats. Eventually his incessant farcical antics lead him to lose his property to Tartuffe. However a timely tell a tale by Tartuffe’s disciple Chunni Lal brings to light the dark and evil past of the godman.

CITIZENFOUR is a real life thriller, unfolding by the minute, giving audiences unprecedented access to filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald’s encounters with Edward Snowden in Hong Kong, as he hands over classified documents providing evidence of mass indiscriminate and illegal invasions of privacy by the National Security Agency (NSA).

Poitras had already been working on a film about surveillance for two years when Snowden contacted her, using the name “CITIZENFOUR,” in January 2013. He reached out to her because he knew she had long been a target of government surveillance, stopped at airports numerous times, and had refused to be intimidated. When Snowden revealed he was a high-level analyst driven to expose the massive surveillance of Americans by the NSA, Poitras persuaded him to let her film.

CITIZENFOUR places you in the room with Poitras, Greenwald, and Snowden as they attempt to manage the media storm raging outside, forced to make quick decisions that will impact their lives and all of those around them.

CITIZENFOUR not only shows you the dangers of governmental surveillance—it makes you feel them. After seeing the film, you will never think the same way about your phone, email, credit card, web browser, or profile, ever again.

Nabarun is the exclamation mark in Bengali literature. He is the emphatic interjector. His characters shamelessly hustle, behave atrociously, and try to exist in a violently hostile world. The film tries to get into the noisy, grimy, scratchy insides of his mind. Bouncing between pure documentary and fiction, just like Nabarun.

MAKING OF ECOFRIENDLY CLAYGANESH
Sun Aug 28, 12:30 PM

A woman dreams about the
upcoming trial of the man who sexually assaulted (and possibly raped)
her in the park one not-so-typical morning on her way to work. The
piece focuses on the woman's subconscious and begs the question "Is
the woman responsible for the attack against her?" and throws a
critical eye onto court practices that allow such personal questions
as what clothing the woman was wearing to be asked within the
courtroom.

All are Welcome!

Citizen Four
Fri Sep 16, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team

Write Club Hyderabad
Write Club, Hyderabad is a platform for all the writers of Hyderabad (aspiring or published) to gather at one place and write. The whole idea of write club is for the writers to come out of the closet and cut down the tag.

What we do, basically:
One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring with them a theme, a writing plan and exercises. We all then write to the host’s prompts and guidelines for about an hour. We read out our write-ups, based on the writer’s discretion and obtain feedback and critique on them.

Any pre-requisites:
Entry is free, open and welcomed. We advise writers to bring in their writing devices and we’re all set.
