When Godavari comes...
Thu Oct 9, 7:30 PM
R.Umamaheswari
Lamakaan invites all for an evening of book release and a Panel discussion. The book titled "When Godavari Comes: People's History of a River - Journeys in the Zone of the Dispossessed" written by R.Umamaheswari, a noted Historian, environmentalist and journalist.

The book cruises through the length and breadth of Godavari (as much as possible), between years 2006 and 2013, into the villages to be submerged by the Indira Sagar Polavaram National multi-purpose Project of Andhra Pradesh-Telangana. Through an engaged first-person journal of journeys in these villages, the author records people's voices (and faces) and reflects on the issues, such as, historical past of Godavari region and its bearing on the present, idea of a river, forest and land and the male construct of a dam. When Godavari comes, there is a churning that brings in new life, crops, on fields, marshes and wetlands and at the same time she also leaves some people stranded, manoeuvering their life's boat through, even as they are rendered at the mercy of the state. Yet, the destruction from a Godavari's coming is not permanent, nor an apocalypse, as a massive 'modern' displacement from 'development' is. In journeying on Godavari, travelling with its flow, you meet these people- adivasi/tribal, dalits (and the other marginalised)- and hear their stories, their philosophies of life and of being reduced to a sunyam (zero). Indeed, a whole history is in the process of being written from above in this geographical-cultural-social space. This is the first book of this nature based almost entirely on people's voices from the submergence zone.

The panel discussion ill be on the river, people, Polavaram and the two states.

Gregor Samsa- Play by Samahaara
Sat Oct 18, 7:30 PM
Samahaara
Samahaara presents "GREGOR SAMSA"

An adaptation of Franz Kafka's novella "Metamorphosis"
by Anjali Parvati Koda
Directed by Rathna Shekar Reddy

Franz Kafka. The images the name brings. A tragic life. A tragic death. Heavy stories that brought about both despair and catharsis. Yet when he first read his epic novella Metamorphosis to his friends, he read it as if it were a comedy. The listeners laughed and clapped at the troubles of Gregor Samsa who woke up one fine morning to discover he had, somehow, metamorphosed into a bug. Gregor Samsa, the salesman must now face the reality of his new form and his family of parents and sister must now deal with it. Is it a tragedy or a comedy when his manager is scared away by the creature that was/is Gregor? Is it really funny that he now has a taste for spoiled food? Is it hilarious that his family now will not look at him? Come watch the Comedy/tragedy as the family turns from scared to sympathetic to horror and apathy, as they react to this strange illness.

Truth About Me:A Hijra lifestory
Sat Nov 1, 10:30 AM
HBT, Anveshi
Hyderabad Book Trust and Anveshi invites you to an event of book introduction of 'The Truth About Me: A Hijra Life Story' by Revathi. Revathi introduces the book and readings from both the English and Telugu books. Participating in the discussion are Revathi, Karthik (Telangana Transgender Hijra Samithi) and others from the transgender community.

The Truth About Me: Minorities, it has been said, don’t count until they are counted. Globally, it is estimated that 0.3% of adults may identify as transgender. This is equal to the populations of countries like Kazakhstan, Equador and Cambodia. Viewing the numbers in this way puts a new perspective on things.

Revathi's book is provocative and gripping, and, at the same time, awe-inspiring. As she describes her terror-filled life, she does not plead for pity. All she asks is for others to recognize and treat hijras as fellow humans, with the same hopes and desires as everybody else. The frankness and fearlessness with which she discusses even the most ‘private’ aspects of her life as a hijra—the details of her sex-change operation, her sexual encounters with her customers, the brutal sexual assault by the police and so on—is striking and admirable. Her critique of social constructions of gender and dominant notions of masculinity—bereft of theoretical jargon, and, precisely because of this, lucid and compelling—is a powerful plea for us to radically re-consider what it means to be male and female at the same time as it urges us to seek the third way—of transcending the rigid binary division between male and female and work towards a notion of humanness beyond and above gender as conventionally understood.

Jeelani Bano is one of the most famous writers in Urdu. She belongs to the city of Hyderabad and so her novels and short stories depict the social, cultural and political scenario of the place. According to Naseeruddin Hashmi, “In the beginning she wrote on films and then started writing fiction and at present she is on the list of top writers of India and Pakistan.” (Deccan Main Urdu 1963 P 1056-57) She was born on 14th July 1936 in Badayun in Uttar Pradesh. She inherited the literary talent from her father, a well-known poet Hairat Badayuni. She was brought up in a purely literary atmosphere. The literary atmosphere and the visits of many progressive writers, Sajjad Zaheer, Maqdoom Mohiuddin, Raj Bahadur Goud, Jigar Murad Abadi, Krishan Chander, Majrooh Sultan Puri, to her house played an important role in developing her personality. She developed the hobby of reading right from her childhood. At an early age she read Sadat Hasan Manto, Ismat Chugtai, Meer, Ghalib, Iqbal, Gorky, Chekov, Maupassant, Bedi, Faiz, Majaz, Qurratul-Ain-Hyder, and Ahmed Nadeem Quasimi besides the above mentioned writers. The impact of these writers affected her art of writing and blessed her with maturity of thought. She wrote in her own style and she did not make any particular writer her ideal, She wrote her first short story in 1952, “Ek Nazar Idhar Bhi” (A Glance Hither). Her best-known short story, “Moum Ki Mariam” was published in the journal Savera, which was received with great warmth, both by the literary men of that age and also by the readers. Her first collection of stories was “Raushni ke Minar” and her first novel was “Aiwaan-e-ghazal”. Her other novels are “Baarish-e-Sang”, “Nirvaan”. “Jugnu aur Sitare” “Naghme Ka Safar.” Her other Collections of stories are: Paraya Ghar, Raat ke Musafir, Roz ka Qissa, Yeh koun Hansa, Tiryaaq, Nayee Aurat, Sach ke siva, Baath Phoolon ki, are an addition to Urdu literature. She is a skilled writer. Her stories are an image of the social life of our era. She throws light upon the evils and ills of the society and politics. She picturizes boldly the downfall of the Jagirdari system and its causes. When she started her career as a writer the progressive movement was at its height. The jagirdari system was coming to an end, giving place to a new system. The peasants revolted against the jagirdars and fought for their rights and justice. The changing situation affected her thoughts and her literary talent. Every writer gets influenced by his age and period and we find a clear picture of the age in her works. The political, social, economical and cultural conditions of society have a realistic reflection in her works. Qamar Rais expresses the opinion, “Problems posed by the abolition of the Zamindari system and the rapid industrialization in the country have been consummately portrayed by the writers like Anwar Azim, Qazi Abdussattar, Iqbal Mateen, Kalam Hyderi, Jeelani Bano, Raza Sajjad Zaheer, Ram lal, Ratan Singh, Ghayas Ahmed Gaddi, Ahmed Yousuf and others.” (October Revolution: Impact on Indian literature-Impact on Urdu Literature).
