This April, every Wednesday evening, Lamakaan is rolling out a special showcase of films by acclaimed Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier. Known for her sharp storytelling and emotional depth, Bier’s work is bound to spark conversations long after the credits roll.

About the Director: Susanne Bier, born in Copenhagen in 1960, is one of Denmark’s most acclaimed filmmakers whose career bridges intimate Scandinavian dramas and international productions. After studying at the National Film School of Denmark, she made her mark with films like Open Hearts (2002), Brothers (2004), and After the Wedding (2006), before winning the Academy Award and Golden Globe for In a Better World (2010). She has also directed English‑language works such as Things We Lost in the Fire, the global hit Bird Box, and the Emmy‑winning miniseries The Night Manager. Lamakaan invites you to a talk by Dr. Fatima Shahnaz on ‘The Fallout of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran and its escalating Geostrategic and Economic effects on India. Is India’s silence ambivalence, or self-interest? Also on Indo-Israel relations and a new twist on the Operation Sindoor narrative!’

This is the second talk by Dr. Fatima Shahnaz at Lamakaan on the Iran war; the first was on the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordo, and Isfahan last year. An author, international human rights activist, journalist who operated both in the U.S. and India, and a professor (rtd), Dr. Shahnaz was the first Indian woman journalist to be invited as a guest of the Government of Iran to attend the commemoration ceremonies on the sixteenth death anniversary of Syed Ayatullah Rohullah Khomeini when she was asked to deliver a lecture on human rights at an international conference in Tehran. She then personally met the late Ayatullah Ali Khameini and heard his speeches; she will offer first-hand insights into the current crisis in Iran and globally.

Wag the Dog (1997) is a political satire from director Barry Levinson that follows an elaborate ruse fabricated in order to distract from a US presidential scandal. A 'spin doctor' (Robert de Niro) and a Hollywood producer (Dustin Hoffman) get together to manipulate and construct public opinion using the rhetoric of warmongering, sentimentalism, and jingoism through the immense media machinery of the USA. Through biting satire and ridiculous developments, film follows the construction of this narrative and consequently exposes the dirtiness of bourgeois politics, the highly ideological functions of nationalism and war, the farce of "media neutrality", and the real face of the ruling classes. In the present-day scenario, as yet another imperialist war wreaks havoc in the world, as the ruling classes are drowning in scandal and crime, this film becomes all the more relevant.

India has a rich tradition of folk arts. The custodians of which are the many tribes that live in the interiors of various states. Madhubani or Mithila painting is a folk-art form that originated from the Mithila region of Bihar.
The paintings are traditionally based on mythological, folk themes and pastoral symbols. The designs announce the occasion of the celebration and solicit good fortune and divine blessings.
Participate in the Madhubani Art Workshop, get a chance to appreciate the art form and create your very own Madhubani Art masterpiece with acrylic colours on cartridge sheets.

The idea is to host a practitioner-led conversation about what it actually means to design with AI — beyond the hype. The discussion would explore questions such as when designers should trust AI outputs, when human judgment should override them, and how accountability works in AI-assisted products.



The format would be simple and discussion-oriented:

• 2 invited speakers from the local design/technology community

• short opening perspectives (10–15 minutes each)

• followed by an open discussion with the audience



The event would be free and open to all, but we would require online sign-up to keep the group to around 20–30 participants, allowing for a more meaningful conversation.

Gond Painting Workshop with Trishna Patnaik
India has a rich tradition of folk arts. The custodians of which are the many tribes that live in the interiors of various states. The Gonds, are the largest Adivasi Community in India and are Dravidian's whose origin can be traced to the pre-Aryan era. They are mainly found in Madhya Pradesh and its surrounding States. The word Gond comes from the Dravidian expression kond , meaning green mountain . In the Gond belief system, besides Bara Deo (Great God), every hill, river, lake, tree, and rock is inhabited by a spirit and therefore sacred. Gond paintings are fascinating, where the artists express their faiths and beliefs, world view, their visual expression and sense of identity, both as a collective, and as individuals. The motifs are further associated with the rich repertoire of the community and strongly show the interactions with the cosmic, natural and social worlds of humans at multiple levels and contexts. Participate in the Gond Painting Workshop, get a chance to appreciate the art form and create you very own Gond Art masterpiece on cartridge sheets with acrylic colours.

Quality film writing is becoming rarer, despite the boom in social media. Writing about film combines a basic knowledge of film technique with good writing skills. It isn't just ticket sales that that decide whether movie is good or bad, film as an art form requires further study.
Jaiwantika Dutta Dhupkar has an MA in Cmmunications from the University of Hyderabad and an MA in English Literature from EFLU. She has written film reviews for "Full hyderabad dotcom" Hyderabad's No. 1 local website and spent several years in Corporate Communications thereafter.

This is a one-day, small-group dialogue being organized on April 14 (Ambedkar Jayanti) to facilitate a thoughtful and structured discussion on caste in contemporary India. The event will bring together approximately 60–70 participants for a combination of moderated dialogue, reading-based engagement, and guided small-group discussions.
The first half of the day will feature a moderated conversation engaging with themes such as caste and religion, social hierarchy, and the relevance of Ambedkar’s thought in present times. The second half will involve facilitated small-group discussions where participants reflect on their own experiences and perspectives in a respectful and structured setting.
The event is designed as a reflective, educational space and will follow clear guidelines to ensure respectful and constructive dialogue among participants.

“Lash’t Wish” is a poignant Hindi play by Dr.Suryasnata Tripathy about a man who performs cremations for a living. When he encounters an unclaimed body, compassion leads him to perform the last rites—only to discover a note listing three unfulfilled wishes. Before lighting the pyre, he sets out to fulfill them. Blending dark humor with tenderness and reflection, the play explores forgotten dreams, loneliness, and the quiet meaning of life. Lash’t Wish ultimately becomes not a story about death, but a gentle reminder of what we leave behind.

“Lash’t Wish” is a poignant Hindi play by Dr.Suryasnata Tripathy about a man who performs cremations for a living. When he encounters an unclaimed body, compassion leads him to perform the last rites—only to discover a note listing three unfulfilled wishes. Before lighting the pyre, he sets out to fulfill them. Blending dark humor with tenderness and reflection, the play explores forgotten dreams, loneliness, and the quiet meaning of life. Lash’t Wish ultimately becomes not a story about death, but a gentle reminder of what we leave behind.

The film portrays the current handling of the problem, which doesn’t inspire excessive optimism, but it also emphasizes that solutions do exist.
