Every Wednesday evening this September, we celebrate the enigmatic genius of Michelangelo Antonioni with a curated selection of his most iconic films. From the haunting silences of *L’Avventura* to the visual poetry of *Blow-Up*, Antonioni’s work reshaped cinematic language—favoring mood, ambiguity, and existential depth over conventional storytelling. His films invite us to linger in the spaces between words, where alienation, desire, and modernity collide.
Born on September 29, 1912, in Ferrara, Italy, and passing away on July 30, 2007, in Rome, Antonioni left behind a legacy that continues to challenge and inspire filmmakers worldwide. He was the only director to win the Palme d'Or, Golden Lion, Golden Bear, and Golden Leopard, and received an Honorary Oscar in 1995 for his masterful visual style. His trilogy—*L’Avventura*, *La Notte*, and *L’Eclisse*—remains a cornerstone of modernist cinema, exploring the discontents of contemporary life with unmatched elegance and introspection.
Film Title: L’Avventura (THE ADVENTURE)| 1960 | 143 Mins | Italy & France | Italian with English Subtitles
About the film: Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’Avventura is a landmark of modernist cinema, renowned for its radical departure from traditional narrative structure. The film begins with the mysterious disappearance of a young woman, Anna, during a yachting trip off the coast of Sicily. But instead of resolving the mystery, Antonioni shifts focus to the emotional drift and existential disconnection between Anna’s lover Sandro and her friend Claudia. The film’s slow pacing, haunting landscapes, and unresolved tension challenged audiences at its Cannes premiere—where it was initially booed, only to later win the Jury Prize and redefine cinematic storytelling.

A Tale to Begin With (82 mins) is an intimate documentary on Jayanta Mahapatra, India’s first major poet in English, capturing his final year in Cuttack and Odisha. Directed by Bishweshwar Das, the film weaves his journeys, reflections, and poetry into a lyrical portrait of the grand old bard of Indian literature.
Bio:
Bishweshwar Das, an adman turned filmmaker, makes his debut with A Tale to Begin With, a heartfelt tribute to poet Jayanta Mahapatra. Rooted in his love for Cuttack, cinema, and poetry, the film marks a full-circle moment in his creative journey.
An actor steps in to audition for the role of Hamlet, a part originally intended for a seasoned veteran who has suddenly walked out. With the cast assembled, the director’s vision in place, and rehearsals about to begin, one question remains— can this newcomer truly step into the character’s soul?
As the play unfolds, a series of unexpected twists and turns shape the actor’s journey. The role deepens, the character comes to life, and the production descends into increasingly darker territory. What begins as performance soon blurs with reality, drawing the director and actor into a shadowy world of obsession, betrayal, and madness.
Warning: This performance contains strong language, scenes of violence, and adult themes. Strictly for audiences aged 18 and over.
A young man, frustrated after being fired from multiple jobs, reaches his breaking point. Convinced that his college education was useless, he returns to his college to demand a refund of his tuition fees, arguing that the knowledge he gained there failed him in the real world. In response, his former professors take a clever test to challenge his perception and prove his intelligence. Will they succeed in changing his mind and sending him back with a new perspective? Watch the play to find out what happens next!
Inspired by the play "The Refund" written by Fritz Karinthy.

About the film: Red Desert (1964), directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, is a haunting psychological drama set against the bleak industrial backdrop of Ravenna, Italy. The film follows Giuliana, a fragile and emotionally unstable woman recovering from a traumatic car accident, as she struggles to find meaning and connection in a world dominated by machinery, pollution, and alienation. The historic Gen Z youth uprising in Nepal on 8-9 September has led to the collapse of the authoritarian capitalist regime of KP Sharma Oli. Subsequently an interim government has been formed. However, the future of the Himalayan nation remains uncertain. Despite the regime change, there are no signs of any systemic change in the offing. Several conspiracy theories are being peddled to explain this explosive uprising in our neighbouring country. Against this backdrop of chaos and confusion, there is a need to understand the actual reasons behind this unprecedented youth uprising in Nepal. Also, a discussion on the future possibilities in that country is the need of the hour. The question also arises as to what are the implications of this uprising for Indian ruling elites and the Indian people. It is on these questions that we plan to hold a discussion this time. All are cordially invited.

KAFKAS DER BAU
Director: Jochen Alexander Freydank
Year: 2014
Language: German (with English Subtitles)
Runtime: 110 Minutes
Genre: Literary Adaptation | Psychological Thriller | Dystopian Drama
Screening Date: Tuesday, September 23, 2025
Time: 7:00 PM
Venue: Lamakaan, Off Road #1, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad
Synopsis:
Kafkas Der Bau is a haunting adaptation of Franz Kafka’s unfinished story “Der Bau,” brought to the screen for the first time in its original language. Set in a sprawling, fortress-like apartment complex, the film follows Franz (Axel Prahl), a man who has seemingly secured everything he ever wanted, yet feels increasingly hunted by invisible forces outside his door. Surveillance cameras, locked gates, and elaborate defences cannot silence the echo of paranoia that grows within his mind.
As Franz isolates himself further, his relationships, career, and very sense of reality begin to unravel. The world outside, real or imagined, presses closer, and the burrow he built for safety becomes his suffocating cage.
Directed by Academy Award winner Jochen Alexander Freydank (Toyland), this chilling psychological drama explores themes of fear, surveillance, and the cost of self-imposed isolation in an age of constant watchfulness. Dark, claustrophobic and unsettlingly timely, Kafkas Der Bau is both a faithful tribute to Kafka’s genius and a mirror to our own anxious, barricaded lives.

The vested interests are inflaming communal and caste tensions and hatred between different communities. Elections no longer reflect the will of the people but are manipulated by money, media and muscle power. Voter list manipulation and organized rigging have evolved overtime and attained ugly face with the use of modern technology. Many citizens of our country are apprehending that they might lose the right to vote seeing the way the S.I.R. is being implemented in Bihar.
Right to food remains elusive as shown in the governmental data that more than 80 crore people are hunger-stricken, and they need free rations. Poor rankings of the country in the Global Hunger Index and Human Freedom Index have tarnished the image of the country in the eyes of international community. The list is only illustrative and not exhaustive. In this background, we are conducting this small meeting here in Lamakaan to discuss the implications of the present scenario and how the civil society should respond to it.
We invite you to participate and share your valuable thoughts in the meeting.
