Film Title: FITZCARRALDO | 1982 | 157 Mins | German & Spanish Languages with English Subtitles

About the film: Fitzcarraldo is a 1982 West German epic adventure-drama film written, produced, and directed by Werner Herzog, and starring Klaus Kinski as would-be rubber baron Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, an Irishman known in Peru as Fitzcarraldo, who is determined to transport a steamship over a steep hill to access a rich rubber territory in the Amazon basin. The character was inspired by Peruvian rubber baron Carlos Fitzcarrald, who once transported a disassembled steamboat over the Isthmus of Fitzcarrald.

The film had a troubled production, chronicled in the documentary Burden of Dreams (1982). Herzog had his crew attempt to manually haul the 320-ton steamship up a steep hill, leading to three injuries.

Discussion: Fall of Nizam's Rule
Fri Sep 15, 8:00 PM
In Defense of Reason
The BJP has been demanding for the last few years that 17th September must be celebrated as a day of liberation (Vimochana Dinotsavam) as it was on this day in 1948 that the Nizam of Hyderabad had surrendered before the Indian army which led to the end of the Nizam's rule. The saffron brigade shamefully conceals the fact that the 𝗥𝗦𝗦 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂 𝗠𝗮𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗵𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲'𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝘂𝗱𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗺. In order to give the entire issue a communal colour, they also deviously hide the fact that the ruling feudal class of Nizam era consisted of not just the Muslim elites but also numerous Hindu feudal lords. Also, those who fought against Nizam rule included several progressive muslims including Shayar-e-Inquilab 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗵𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝗼𝗵𝗶𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻, 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗺 𝗞𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗶, 𝗝𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗱 𝗥𝗶𝘇𝘃𝗶 etc.
Also, those who glorify the role of Indian army in defeating the feudal autocratic rule of Nizam often distort the historical facts. Those who are aware about the history of Telangana are aware that main credit for the collapse of Nizam must go the rebellious peasants of Telangana who were mobilised by the communists. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐦'𝐬 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐦'𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐚𝐳𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐲'𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟑 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟗𝟒𝟖. Besides, the real motive behind the Indian army's action in Hyderabad (which was euphemistically termed as police action) was to brutally crush the Telangana peasant struggle that had spread to large parts of the princely state of Hyderabad and which has the potential of turning into a people’s revolution. It is a fact of history that 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟳 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟱𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗼𝗱𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝘂𝗱𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀. As the Indian army marched towards the villages, the feudal lords also started moving back to their palatial buildings in the villages.
In the ongoing competitive exhibitionism between the political parties such as BJP, Congress and the BRS as to whether September 17 is to be celebrated as ‘Liberation Day’, ‘Integration Day’ or ‘Independence Day’, some very important facts of history are being conveniently overlooked. The perspective of the peasantry and the working class of Telangana is being deliberately suppressed in these celebrations.
We invite one and all in this important discussion. The rulers are planning their own celebration. The question is: what should be people’s perspective on this extremely important question for Telangana?

Bridging Divides: Empowering Community Meet-up for Change

Description:

In this city where divisions between social classes can is no secret. Taking a page a the city of Banglore , we like minded people emerges in the form of a unique meet-up that seeks to bridge these gaps and foster positive change. This transformative gathering brings together individuals from various walks of life, ranging from the privileged echelons of the upper class to the resilient souls of the lower access strata.

What sets this meet-up apart is its commitment to addressing the imbalances that persist in society. While those in the upper and lower echelons have established systems of checks and balances, the middle class often finds itself navigating a labyrinthine bureaucracy and a seemingly unresponsive law enforcement system. The stigma of apathy can make seeking assistance a daunting task for this segment of society.

Enter the empowerment meet-up, a dynamic platform that aims to empower individuals to seek solutions to their challenges. With a diverse array of issues at hand, ranging from job hunting, combating racism, nurturing mental health, and even dealing with the thorny issues of police misconduct, corrupt officials, and local hooligans, the meet-up stands as a testament to collective empathy and proactive community involvement.

No problem is too trivial or complex for this forum. Its core ethos lies in creating an open space where anyone can present their concerns, no matter how seemingly insignificant. The issues are laid out on the table, inviting those with the will and means to lend a hand. It's a voluntary symphony of support, a powerful reminder that within the community, solutions can often be found by those who are most affected.

This meet-up radiates the spirit of unity, advocating for the common good and illustrating the transformative potential of collective action. It defies the status quo, redefining the concept of community assistance, and nurturing a culture of active involvement. With each interaction, each problem solved, the meet-up becomes a cornerstone of hope, demonstrating that individuals, when united by purpose, can drive meaningful change that reverberates far beyond its initial inception.

So, whether you come from a place of privilege or have faced the uphill battles of life's challenges, this meet-up beckons as an opportunity to embrace unity, share wisdom, and create ripples of positive change. It is a haven where problems find solutions, where apathy is transformed into action, and where the strength of a community becomes the driving force for a brighter, more equitable future

Documentary Screening
Sun Sep 17, 4:00 PM
Niyut
I would like to organize documentary screening at lamakaan, This documentary is the most comprehensive look at the "untouchables" in India. Motivated by ancient religious edicts, no amount of governmental encouragement has been able to stem the tragic custom that separates human beings according to their birth. Those considered untouchable suffer more than isolation, they are forced to fulfill menial tasks in their communities, drink from separate containers, remove their shoes on the street as a sign of respect and perform or exhibit many other outward signs of their perceived inferiority. While the media projects a positive image of a democratic India, filmmaker Stalin K spends four years traveling the country to expose the continued oppression of the Dalits, "the broken people," in a wide variety of communities, including Sikhs, Christians and Muslims.

Remembering Operation Polo
Sun Sep 17, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan & Yunus Lasania
September 17, which marks the anniversary of the erstwhile Hyderabad state's annexation to India, has today become another weapon for the right to distort history. The historical event Called Operation Polo has been rechristened 'Liberation Day' by the center today, while the state has formally called it 'Integration Day.'

The erstwhile Hyderabad state went through a period of turmoil between 1947 and 1948 under its last Nizam after he refused to join the Indian Union after independence. With a parallel Communist Party of India -led peasant uprising in Telangana's rural regions, and the Razakar militia wreaking havoc, the state was anything but politically under control.

The annexation is also a painful memory for many Muslims in the Hyderabad state, given that thousands were massacred from the community after the Indian army took over the state. The atrocities are well documented in the Sunderlal Committee (set up by India’s first PM, Jawaharlal Nehru) to look into the atrocities of Muslims) report post Operation Polo.

So what exactly happened? To understand the historical event, Prof Inukonda Thirumali, author of Against Nizam, Against Dora, will discuss with host Yunus Lasania the events that led to Operation Polo. The talk will also throw light on the much less understood Telangana Armed Struggle (1946-51), which today has been largely ignored or forgotten over decades.

Citizens Dialouge
Sun Sep 24, 2:00 PM
Akarsh Sriramoju
Hello everyone, as we know, it's been 76 years since independence, but our Vision for our country, inscribed in our constitution, is still a distant dream. Our preamble emphasizes social justice, economic justice, and political justice, and due to the changing circumstances, it became a mandate to practice environmental justice to protect our earth. Therefore, we believe that upholding these four justice principles is crucial for becoming a progressive nation. Understanding this Vision, we - a group of responsible citizens, have started the "Justice Movement of India." It is a long-term movement aimed at bringing citizens, activists, experts, NGOs, Civil society organizations, and intellectuals together for the sake of our Nation's progress.

We are organizing a "Citizens Dialogue" on 24th September from 2 pm to 6 pm, and we request you to attend to discuss "Will it be possible to change our politics and our society in India?." ( The Dialogue will take place in Telugu ).

Remaking History:1948 Police Act
Tue Sep 26, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan & Moses Tulasi
Lamakaan invites you to the Book Launch of 'Remaking History: 1948 Police Action and the Muslims of Hyderabad.'

The story this book follows begins on August 15, 1947. As the new nation-states of India and Pakistan prepared to negotiate land and power, the citizens of the princely state of Hyderabad experienced the unraveling of an intense political conflict between the union government of India and the local ruler, the Nizam of Hyderabad. The author explores how the state of Hyderabad was struggling to produce its own tools of cultural renaissance and modernity in the background of the union government's deployment of the central army, the Nizam's idea of "Azad Hyderabad," and the Telangana armed struggle fostered by leftist parties. With evidence from the oral histories of various sections of Muslims and non-Muslims—and a wide variety of written sources and historical documents, this book captures such an intense moment of new politics and cultural discourses.

Lamakaan invites you to the screening of an Oscar-nominated Documentary film.

Film: Janani's Juliet | 2019 | 53min | Tamil with English Subtitles |

Director, Camera, Sound Design and Editing - Pankaj Rishi Kumar

Producer: PSBT

Synopsis: Kausalya lost her husband (Shankar) when her own family attacked them. They had married against their families' wishes. Deeply disturbed by a spate of honor killings in India, Indianostrum, a Pondicherry-based theatre group, sets out to introspect the implications of caste, class, and gender. They adapt Shakespeare's ‘Romeo and Juliet’. What emerges in the process is a critical reflection and commentary on the contemporary Indian society where love struggles to survive.

About the Director: Pankaj Rishi Kumar subtly keeps introducing the layers of complexity into the film by weaving-in the making of the play, “Chandala”. The dialogue between the theatre director and the actors to adapt the play into the Indian context works as a Greek chorus and keeps the viewer engaged. “You are Juliet’s messengers to me,” the director tells the women cast. As they dig deeper into their own psyche, we also question – why it was all about Romeo even in Shakespeare’s time. Why do we not know more about Juliet? … A poetic, political exploration of love (Kavita & Nandan--thehindu.com
