Osmania General Hospital
Sun Aug 6, 5:30 PM
Lamakaan and Hyderabad Urban Lab
*Debate: Does Osmania General Hospital needs to be demolished?*

Lamakaan and Hyderabad Urban Lab are hosting a debate on Sunday August 6th, 5pm at Lamakaan with ten speakers, five to a side, each getting 10 minutes to present their case.
There will be enough time at the end for the audience to jump in.
Write to lamakaan@gmail.com if you wish to speak.

The Osmania General Hospital is a hundred year old landmark on the northern banks of the river Musi in Hyderabad. Constructed in 1919, it has served hundreds of thousands of patients over the years. Tens of thousands of medical professionals have trained here. Unsurprisingly, any talk of altering this iconic building triggers strong emotional reactions.
Yet, in the last 100 years, hospital management techniques have changed. Diagnostic and treatment technologies have changed. Administrative apathy, lack of adequate funding, and callousness of successive governments have negatively affected the building and its infrastructure.
The building as it stands is not serving the needs of the professionals and the patients. The question is, should the building be demolished and a new state of the art hospital building be constructed ? Or, can the building be upgraded and retrofitted to continue to serve as a hospital ? Or can the building be turned into a model of adaptive reuse (e.g. a museum of modern medicine) – while redeveloping the remaining estate into a new hospital

Sutradhar present Ismat-Ek Aurat
Sat Aug 12, 8:00 PM
Sutradhar
Ismat Chughtai, was a veritable tour de force of women's writing in India, a woman who was a feminist by instinct, long before it became fashionable to flash the badge of feminism.
She brought to the fore the modernity inherent in the actions of the poorest of rural Indian women as well as the stagnation in the minds of the so called urban elite.
Ruthlessly honest and deeply perceptive, she presented the truth of society and its women in the same nakedness in which she saw them. She wrote with a rare courage, truth and good humour which endear her to everyone who comes across her writings.
The first story, Saas (Mother-in-law), is about a unique saas-bahu pair and adds a new dimension to this perceived notorious relationship.
The second is Chidi Ki Dukki (The Second Card of Clubs) which speaks volumes about how wit and attitude in a woman can be more attractive than the supposed good looks.

Juggernaatukam
Thu Aug 24, 8:00 PM
Sutradhar
"Juggernaatukam" is an intriguing play that delves into the complexities of sanity, insanity, and the fine line that separates the two. Based on the Hindi play "Room No 13, Block No 14" originally written in Marathi as "Aaliya Bhogasi" by Srikant Sinkar, and skillfully translated into Hindi by Anant Kulkarni, the play presents a captivating exploration of the human psyche.

Set on a Saturday, the play begins with the controversial decision to place a sane man within the confines of an asylum. As the audience watches the events unfold, they are encouraged to question the definition of sanity itself. The characters grapple with their own perceptions and biases, leading to a thought-provoking and introspective narrative.

The central conflict revolves around the distinction between the sane and the insane. Each character, both within the asylum and outside, struggles to define their own sanity while labeling others as mad. This introspection raises questions about the basis of our judgments and the influence of individual idiosyncrasies in forming them.

The play's core message emerges as it challenges the audience to confront their preconceived notions and biases towards those they consider different or "insane." By presenting harmless individuals who have found solace in their unique realities, "Juggernaatukam" challenges society's role in deciding who deserves confinement and underlines the importance of empathy and understanding.

The narrative artfully captures the essence of the human experience, portraying characters with depth and nuance. As the play progresses, it explores the psychological complexities and emotional struggles of each character. Their interactions with one another create a web of relationships that showcases the diverse perspectives on sanity and confinement.

The staging of "Juggernaatukam" by participants of an acting workshop organized by the Sutradhar School of Acting adds an authentic touch to the performance. The passion and dedication of the actors breathe life into the story, making it resonate more deeply with the audience.

The set design, lighting, and sound effects play pivotal roles in conveying the mood and ambiance of the play. The asylum environment is meticulously crafted to reflect the characters' inner turmoil while bringing the audience into the world of the play.

Throughout the play, the dialogue is infused with moments of humor, poignancy, and introspection. The script's powerful language and evocative imagery leave a lasting impact on the audience, encouraging them to reevaluate their understanding of sanity and mental health.

In conclusion, "Juggernaatukam" is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged play that challenges the audience's perception of sanity and insanity. By presenting the struggles of harmless individuals grappling with their own realities, the play reminds us of the significance of empathy, compassion, and understanding in our judgment of others. With its engaging narrative and skilled performances, "Juggernaatukam" offers an unforgettable theatrical experience that will linger in the minds of the audience long after the curtains fall.

Osmania Hospital Demolition
Fri Aug 25, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan & Yunus Lasania
Title: Osmania Hospital Demolition: A conspiracy to destroy Hyderabad's heritage? A Discussion

Osmania General Hospital is once again in the news. The heritage structure faces a severe existential crisis for the first time as the state government has made its intention clear. It wants to demolish the old building to construct a new hospital.

While there is a requirement for a new hospital and other advanced medical facilities, questions have been raised about whether demolishing the OGH building is suitable. Given that OGH is situated on a 26-acre site and occupies only three acres of space, there is a requirement to understand not just OGH's history but also the politics surrounding heritage buildings.

Hyderabad's heritage has taken a massive beating in recent years, and the demolition of OGH might pave the way for future destruction on whimsical grounds. Hence, a detailed discussion, considering all aspects, is required. For this talk, journalist and oral historian Yunus Lasania (who runs The Hyderabad History Project), senior architect Srinivas Murthy, and founder of Deccan Archive (architect) Sibghatullah Khan will hold a talk and discuss the issue at length.

Senior historian and activist Sajjad Shahid, currently abroad, will join us with a video message.

9th Hasan Memorial Lecture 2023
Sun Aug 27, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
Lamakaan invites you to its 9th Hasan Memorial Lecture 2023 on 'UCC: Why & Why not?' by Prof. Faizan Mustafa.

About the topic:

The concept of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India has long been a topic of intense debate and discussion. The UCC proposes a single set of personal laws for all citizens of the country, irrespective of their religion, thereby aiming to replace the existing diverse set of personal laws that are based on religious beliefs and practices. While the idea of a UCC has its proponents and opponents, the question remains: Is it necessary?

About the speaker: Prof. Faizan Mustafa is an Indian academic and legal scholar. He is the new vice-chancellor of the Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) Patna. He is the former Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad and before that, he was also the founding V.C. of National Law University Odisha. He sits on the board of directors of the technology incubator, the T-Hub.

About Hasan Memorial Lecture:

The Hasan Memorial Lecture was instituted in 2014 and is held each year at Lamakaan on August 15 with an eye to the emergent political and economic crisis in India/South Asia or the world. It is our single most crucial programming effort each year and draws a very significant audience. The previous editions of the lectures were delivered by TM Krishna, Prof. Jayati Ghosh, Prof.Gail Omvedt, Bharat Patankar, and Prof.Kodandaram, Siddharth Varadarajan, et al.

Mr. Moyed Hasan in whose memory the annual lecture is named, was a scientist, a photographer, an environmentalist, and a person with a deep concern for the lives of ordinary people. His house, which he named Lamakaan (as in the Sufi literary tradition to mean 'an abode for those who travel without any worldly possessions') " has now become an important part of Hyderabad’s culture and political life. Mr. Hasan left behind an image of what an engaged life is. From science to art, and environment to international affairs he encompassed a vision of how we must live meaningfully.
