Disom – The Leadership School
Tue May 30, 5:00 PM
Lamakaan
Disom – The Leadership School is an experiment started by Disom Foundation (www.disomfoundation.org) to nurture future ethical servant leaders for public life. Inspired by the Matsushita Institute for Government and Management in Japan, Disom intends to address a critical need in India at this time: selfless leaders, committed to the community and ultimately answerable to their “inner voice”

Disom offers a 15-month full-time programme which is experiential in nature and where the fellows practice
- Listening to each other and to their own inner voices,
- Living with and embracing diversity, and also
- Deep democracy, in its truest sense

Currently, our second batch with 18 fellows is underway since the last eight months. Our fellows are a diverse group, from 9 different states of the country, from different socio- economic backgrounds, with different educational and professional backgrounds, professing different faiths and ideologies.

Our programme involves travelling to different parts of the country, meeting people, seeing things and understanding the pain of communities. All the time, working on one’s own self. So it is as much a journey within as it is without.

We at Disom, are planning an interactive meeting with Shri SK Joshi, former Chief Secretary at Lamakaan on Tuesday, May 30 from 5-7 pm to discuss about how we can collectively reimagine this new type of leadership that is so required today

Looking forward to an enriching conversation

Remembering Orson Welles
Wed May 31, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan
The summer heat is unrelenting, let's reduce the scorching sun heat through the evening cool breeze by watching one of the most influential and dynamic directors of all time, Orson Welles's films. May is also the birthday month of the director.

About Orson Welles: George Orson Welles (May 6, 1915 – October 10, 1985) was an American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter who is remembered for his innovative work in film, radio, and theatre. He is considered among the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time.

In 1937, he and John Houseman founded the Mercury Theatre, an independent repertory theatre company that presented a series of productions on Broadway through 1941, including Caesar (1937), a modern, politically charged adaptation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

In 1938, his radio anthology series The Mercury Theatre on the Air gave Welles the platform to find international fame as the director and narrator of a radio adaptation of H. G. Wells's novel The War of the Worlds, which caused some listeners to believe that a Martian invasion was occurring. Although reports of panic were mostly false and overstated, they rocketed 23-year-old Welles to notoriety.

His first film was Citizen Kane (1941), which is consistently ranked as one of the greatest films ever made, and he co-wrote, produced, directed, and starred in as the title character, Charles Foster Kane. Welles released twelve other features, the most acclaimed of which include The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), The Lady from Shanghai (1947), Touch of Evil (1958), The Trial (1962), Chimes at Midnight (1966) and F for Fake (1973). His distinctive directorial style featured layered and nonlinear narrative forms, dramatic lighting, unusual camera angles, sound techniques borrowed from radio, deep focus shots and long takes. David Thomson credits Welles with "the creation of a visual style that is simultaneously baroque and precise, overwhelmingly emotional, and unerringly founded in reality." He has been praised as "the ultimate auteur". Among Welles's notable roles in films by other directors are Rochester in Jane Eyre (1943), Harry Lime in The Third Man (1949) and Cardinal Wolsey in A Man for All Seasons (1966). Welles was a lifelong lover of Shakespeare, and Peter Bogdanovich writes that Chimes at Midnight, in which Welles plays John Falstaff, is "arguably his best film, and his own personal favorite"; Joseph McBride and Jonathan Rosenbaum have called it Welles's masterpiece, and Vincent Canby wrote "it may be the greatest Shakespearean film ever made."

Film Title: CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT | 1965 | 116 minutes | English Language |

About the Film: Falstaff (Chimes at Midnight) (Spanish: Campanadas a medianoche) is a 1966 period comedy-drama film directed by and starring Orson Welles. The Spanish–Swiss co-production was released in the United States as Chimes at Midnight and in most of Europe as Falstaff. The film's plot centers on William Shakespeare's recurring character Sir John Falstaff and his father-son relationship with Prince Hal, who must choose between loyalty to his father, King Henry IV, or Falstaff.

EK DURACHARI RAJA
Sun Jun 4, 8:00 PM
SHUDRKA HYDERABAD
EK DURACHARI RAJA (The Story of a Despot) is Shudrka's Hindi production inspired by Albert Camus’ “Caligula”. Here in this play the motif of death is compared to resistance against contemporary despotism, holding out love of the soil and collective voice that represent people’s hopes. In spite of restraining convention and law, the innately vicious autocratic tendency among rulers exists. This enabled modern figures like Amin and Milosevic to indulge in ‘Caligula-ism’ – their dangerous whims and murderous eccentricities, and it meant that the only remedy against those who terrorized, was assassination.

EBAR DHORMORAJYO
Sat Jun 10, 8:00 PM
SHUDRKA HYDERABAD
Our Bengali play, “EBAR DHORMORAJYO” (Comes Now Kingdom of Justice!) is written and directed by Swapan Mondal. In the play Gandhari and Kunti of Mahabharata meet on the last day of Kurukshetra war. If there is one issue that occurs again and again in this play, it is “Dharma”. It is perhaps the most debated and yet perhaps the most compromised. The play unhinges classical interpretation of the epic, while at the same time using the incidents in the epic to enunciate moral and ethical concerns and elaborate on the meanings of “Dharma” in the current context.

Sat May 27, 8:00 PM
Wings Cultural Society
"ajiib dāstān hai ye!" is a performance consisting of more than one dastan (story) told by artists as a solo performance. The collection of dastans which are eccentric will be showcased. This theatrical storytelling performance is developed in a way that is more intimate with the audience and there would be no props used other than just costumes. Stories can be in several languages told by various artists. Inaugural performances featured "Bey" written by Shaukat Thanvi and "Marhoom Ki Yaad Mein" by Patras Bukhari, performed by Rajguru Mohan and Tarique Hameed respectively at WIC Dehradun on 27th August 2022.

Story one:
"Bey" is a short story written by Shaukat Thanvi. It is said by the astrologer to the protagonist that the reason for your death would be a word starting from the second letter of Urdu alphabets 'Bey', that is 'B' in English and 'ब' in Hindi. The protagonist must be cautious of all things which start from the letter "Bey" to stay alive. This story is performed by Rajguru Mohan.

Story Two:
"Marhoom Ki Yaad Mein" is Patras Bokhari's most famous essay from his sole masterpiece Patras ke Mazameen. It is a story of a cycle that Patras buys from his friend Mirza. It is arguably the funniest story ever written in Urdu. This story is performed by Tarique Hameed.
