About the Book
Aspiring actress Priya is dead. It’s a suicide, and rumour has it that Anil, son of politician and former Telugu-movie superstar Mohan Krishna, drove her to it. Just another film-industry scandal? Or something bigger, much bigger?

Partha, hired by Mohan Krishna’s family to handle the crisis, thinks so. Why won’t such a powerful father defend his son, Partha wonders. Is there an intra-family war? Whose interests are playing out in the media and on social media? Is a political game afoot or is this all connected to Mohan Krishna’s own dubious past? And why are student unions getting involved?

Even as Partha and his associates, Seema and Harish, confront the ethics of being involved in a war with no heroes, they are drawn into a dangerous hunt. They must negotiate a tangled and vicious world to answer one question: a young woman is dead—to whom is her death useful?

An adaptation of the 1979 music album The Wall, the film has been widely viewed worldwide and subject to studies by scholars from various fields. Barking Dog is a Hindi sit-com written by Vishal Vijay, inspired by The Zoo Story by American playwright Edward Albee. The play explores themes of isolation, loneliness, miscommunication as anathematization, social disparity and dehumanization in a materialistic world. The story, in simplest terms, is about how a man who is consumed with loneliness starts up a conversation with another man on a bench in a Park and eventually forces him to participate in an act of violence.

Are 'male' and 'female' the only ways in which we can identify human beings? Are they 'natural' and 'fixed' for life? How does the society decide who is what? And why is it so intolerant to people who want to mess with, shift or change their birth based gender? Does the world get messed up if we have many genders? 

Rachana Mudraboyina is a transgender rights activist from Hyderabad. She is the founder member of Telangana Hijra Intersex Transgender Samiti and also the founder of Trans-Vision, a youtube channel where she is also the writer and director of its web series.

Drag queens are performance artists, almost always male, who dress in women's clothing and often act with exaggerated femininity and in feminine gender roles with a primarily entertaining purpose. They often exaggerate make-up such as eyelashes for dramatic, comedic or satirical effect. Drag queens are closely associated with gay men and gay culture, but can be of any sexual orientation or gender identity. They vary widely by class, culture, and dedication, from professionals who star in films to people who try drag very occasionally.

The activity, which is called doing drag, has many motivations, from individual self-expression to mainstream performance. Drag queen activities among stage and street performers may include lip-syncing, live singing, dancing, roasting etc.

Mitrangan Sahitya kataa is group of like minded people interested in marathi literature reading and writing. Group meets every week to do reading of their writing. Lamakaan invites one and all to this interesting conversation with one of the finest educationists in the country on the National Education Policy 2019.

The draft of NEP 2019 was the first document to be released by the newly elected government in May 2019 and was made public on June 2019. There were suggestions invited from the public. The draft policy is an important document about the education in the so-called new India and its implementation will have a great impact on all the stakeholders Therefore, Lamakaan believes that it needs to be discussed widely.

About Prof Anil Sadgopal: Prof Anil Sadgopal is an Indian educationist and activist, known for the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Programme and for advocacy related to the Right to Education (RTE) Act. He is a recipient of several awards and honours, including the Jamnalal Bajaj Award for 'Application of Science and Technology for Rural Development'. He was instrumental in setting up the Eklavya foundation in 1982. For over a decade, he was Professor of Education at Delhi University and headed its Department of Education during 1998-2001. Since 2004-2005, he has been campaigning for changes in the RTE Act, which he believes is flawed.

Education system of India is so rotten to its core that any mention of this anymore only sounds like a cliché. A sense of helplessness has clouded the people who for decades have seen that there isn’t any fundamental change in the status quo, no matter which regime is there at the helm. And naturally, the ultimate victims are the students. School-going students are suffering from severe anxiety and depression, not to say that the conditions amongst the college going youth is even more severe for they also face the immediate pressure of landing with a job as they graduate. The level of stress, depression, anxiety resulting from unrealistic expectations, lack of peer support, rampant competition etc. is only increasing day by day – so much so that many students are choosing the most unfortunate option of ending their lives altogether. According to a TOI report in Mar’18, one student is committing suicide every 55 mins in India. The same report states that 26,000 students had committed suicides during 2014-17. It hasn’t been long since we had to hear the news of IIT Hyderabad student Mark Andrew Charles succumbing to job pressure. In an yet another incident, Payal Tadvi from Topiwala National Medical College, Mumbai gave up her life facing caste discrimination and harassment inside the campus.

While the psychoanalysis increasingly focuses on the immediate causes behind the students’ suicides viz. depression, stress etc. But the question remains as to what it is that causes the students go into such a state at first place? Analyses employed mainly by psychiatric means tend to make the underlying systemic factors as secondary. It must be asked why after 72 years of independence, Indian state has failed to provide an environment in the campuses which is free from any kind of discrimination. Further, why hasn’t the state been able to ensure a respectable employment to everyone. After all, what it is that makes parents have unrealistic expectations from their children? What it is that causes this rat race amongst students and starts the process of dehumanizing from their age of innocence? How is it possible that even today the students from lower-castes have to face casteist slurs by upper-caste students? All of this cannot be understood merely from psychoanalytical dimensions. Instead, those dimensions must be placed in the overall socio-economic scenario of this country. Only then, we can come to a conclusion that can be a real guide to further action. Why does a person come into queer space? And how can we make space for all the reasons why they may be there? What is often our first response and immediate priority when a person comes.  How may we take care of one another with responsibility? How do we learn to say  'we are here for you'?  

Ponni Arasu is a queer feminist activist. She has been part of queer collectives and advocacy groups such as Nigah, Anjuman and Voices Against 377. In her capacity as a legal practitioner and researcher at the Alternative Law Forum in Bangalore, she worked with the LesBit collective. She is also a historian of public politics in Tamilnadu.

Nabikei (Footprint) Shri Prakash, 2017. 63 min The American Southwest—especially the sovereign Indigenous nations of Acoma, Laguna, and the Diné or Navajo Nation—has a long history of uranium mining. Once home to a booming economy and proudly called the Uranium Capital of the World, these Indian reservations and poor White communities are now littered with old mines, tailings dams, and other uranium contamination, which is the legacy of this deadly industry. On the Navajo Nation alone, there are more than 500 abandoned uranium mine sites that need to be addressed.

In spite of the US government’s Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and the Radiation Exposure and Compensation Act, supposedly strict and powerful regulatory agencies like the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency are almost helpless to mitigate the contamination left by the nuclear industry.
This film explores how colonialism, which came to the Southwest with Spanish conquest, has changed face in modern time, as it is played out in a new quest for mineral resources.
Contaminated land, water, and air have left these poor communities helpless. Their efforts to gain justice have failed. Indigenous and poverty-stricken communities who suffered the most are trapped and exploited, as new mining companies continue to disregard the health and environment of these people with the lure of a better economy, jobs and new In Situ Leach uranium mining methods.

Unfortunately, this is the same sad story repeated in other parts of the world including India, but in India it is the government itself undertaking the enterprise and repeating the same degradation in Jadugoda (Jharkhand).

The play is based on the conversation between the two legendary writers of their time. Ismat Chugtai and Manto were good friends. The play deals with some lighter moments of their personal life.

Panel discussion--"Keep the climate, change the economy: Need for a rainbow coalition"
Climate change is here! We are already seeing monsoon vagaries every year and frequent extreme weather events like the very heavy rainfall in Mumbai in July 2019, and in Kerala in August 2018. The probability of remaining within 1.5-2oC temperature rise above pre-industrial times that scientists consider a do-not-cross redline now appears to be low. If greenhouse gas emissions do not come down drastically in the near future, temperature rise is likely to be 3-4oC, and the consequences of this will be catastrophic. South Asia is one of the two most vulnerable regions to climate change impacts. The 2015 inter-governmental Paris Agreement to check climate change does not seem to be succeeding. People need to step in now. What should we do to form a people's rainbow coalition to tackle a now imminent climate crisis? What should its programme be?

Curbing Democracy: UAPA / RTI / ART 370 Bills

One side Modi Government’s anti people policies are pushing majority of the masses towards unemployment and misery and on the other side the government has recently passed subsequent bills in Parliament which will curb the democracy further and establish a complete authoritative fascist state. Bill like UAPA is aimed at suppressing any dissenting voice by labelling them as terrorists. RTI bill is also amended so that the government can operate without any accountibility and at the same time propagate misinfomations among people. And the recent Bill to abrogate article 370 is an anti democratic and autocratic step towards the people of Kashmir which will fuel fire in future and adversely impact the whole country. It is the duty of everyone now to get back the lost democratic freedom through these bills by raising their voices against it. In order to understand further about these bills in details, all are invited for a discussion at Lamakaan.

Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

Maidanam, one of the most famous and most controversial of Chalam’s novels, dramatises his ideas on marriage, freedom and the moral issues involved in them. Rajeswari, is a young, frustrated housewife. It all starts with her thorough disillusionment with her tradition-bound, unfeeling, emotionally sterile lawyer-husband who is given to treating her as a piece of property, as one who fulfills his sexual and social needs.

Her deliverance comes in the form of Ameer, a client of her husband. Their very first meeting is an emotionally charged and sexually exciting experience. His looks pierce her clothes and caress her all over her body. This is a new experience for her. She has never known anything so exhilarating like that before. When finally Ameer embraces her, in the absence of her husband of course, she reacts with a cry of joy. She feels that Ameer has endowed divinity on her. This realization marks the death of her old self. She plunges headlong into a life of passion and bliss with Ameer.

Soon enough Ameer, asks her to “come away” with him. They decide to go away to “Maidanam,” a wide open plain where they will not be disturbed by society. For a while Rajeswari agonizes over whether she is driven by animalistic lust or noble love or the simple desire to free herself from the shackles of soul-killing traditions.

After living like that for months Rajeshwari gets pregnant. Ameer does not want the baby and wants Rajeshwari to get rid of her pregnancy. Maternal instincts take over her and she refuses. They have a fight and Ameer leaves her alone and vanishes. After Ameer has gone away Rajeswari turns to Meera a handsome sixteen years boy in a major way for emotional and material support.

Hoping to get back Ameer she decides to get rid of her pregnancy with the help of Meera. Things get complicated when Meera starts developing feelings for Rajeshwari. Meanwhile Ameer comes back. He does not like how close Rajeshwari and Meera have become. Now Rajeswari has to choose between Ameer who she truly loves or Meera who acted as her pillar of support in desperate times.

Does the law really decide our lives? Or offer the final solutions to all of our problems? Should we rest our hopes in law? How do legal decisions play out in our daily lives? In what ways is the Law our ally, opponent, co-traveller or support?

Vasudha Nagaraj is a senior advocate who practices in High Court of
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. She argues for tribals displaced by
development projects, men and women subjected to police violence,
women facing sexual assault and discrimination and many public interest
litigations too.

The Metaphysics of the Tree-Frog's Silence is a volume of poetry written by Ajithan G. Kurup when he was in his twenties. The volume was published by Poetrywala posthumously after his tragic and sudden death in April 2015.

Adil Jussawalla writes in the introduction to the volume: 'To enter Ajithan G. Kurup’s poetic world is to risk, in the words of his title poem, dancing “headlong down precipices". It’s rare to find a contemporary poet who dares near-unattainable heights and fearful depths on dancing words... Ajithan's erudition spans a great many cultures and languages, classical and contemporary, and while some of it may seem Greek to the reader who shuns difficulty, it’s a Greek the poet seems truly to have lived in, a language internalised, as though, in fact, the poet was at home in the Greece of ancient times, or had passed through it as a passionately interested traveller.

Ajithan has the uncanny gift of being able to conjure back lands he has been to, using
his own peculiar brand of magic, and to dazzle us with lands he has never seen (as in “Sketches from a Log…”). He is voyager, shaman, and most often seer, in one person.'

Jeet Thayil, another contemporary poet, says: "It is our loss that we did not know Ajithan Kurup’s work when he was alive, and we did not celebrate his brave and lonely project: to render the unsayable into language. He cannot be imitated or replaced, only admired."

Join Kolkata Anandam for a screening and discussion of the film Until and Unless. The actors and producers of the film will be present to answer any questions.

Set in West Bengal a year before the historic decision to repeal the anti-sodomy law Penal Code 377, Until and Unless follows the story of four individuals and the impact of systemic oppression via India's legislative system on their lives. The film features Sintu, a transwoman community leader raised in the Sheoraphuli red-light district; Nitu, a transwoman sex worker who lives a dual identity as a man named Nitai; Lovely, a Koti person who lives a closeted life while working in an office environment, and Pratap, a trans teen still navigating her identity. Through juxtaposing their stories with interviews from lawyers and activists working to oppose these laws, the film shows the lived consequences of state and social violence on community self-representations.

Not even six months after the birth of Azad Hindustan, Gandhiji was murdered. After all, who was called the Father of the Nation, why was he killed at the time of the birth of the nation? How should we understand this relationship between the birth of India and the death of Gandhiji? Since independence, has India been trying to get rid of this murder? At the moment we are in today, can it be said that India has now freed itself completely from Gandhi?
About The Hasan Memorial Lecture:

The Hasan Memorial Lecture was instituted in 2014 and is held each year at Lamakaan on August 15 with an eye to the emergent political and economic crisis in India/South Asia or the world. It is our single most important programming effort each year and draws a very significant audience. The previous editions of the lectures were delivered by Prof. Jayati Ghosh, Prof.Gail Omvedt, Bharat Patankar and Prof.Kodandaram, Siddharath Varadarajan, et al.

Mr. Moyed Hasan in whose memory the annual lecture is named, was a scientist, a photographer, an environmentalist and a person with a deep concern for the lives of ordinary people. His house, that he named Lamakaan (as in the Sufi literary tradition to mean 'an abode for those who travel without any worldly possessions') " has now become an important part of Hyderabad’s cultural and political life. Mr. Hasan left behind an imaginary of what an engaged life is. From science to art, and environment to international affairs he encompassed a vision of how we must live our lives meaningfully.



About the Speaker:
Apoorvanand is professor at the Hindi Department of University of Delhi. An avowed secularist, he is known for his frequent interventions in day-to-day politics, and for being a tireless champion of minority rights. He is one of the most vocal critics of the Sangh Parivar in the Hindi belt.

However, something unexpected happened: the nature, depth and permanence of the Kirikou baby.

Mosaic pendant workshop

Join artist Emily Bhargava on Saturday the 17th from 10:30-12:30 to learn to make mosaic pendants using glass, beads and found objects. We will use an epoxy clay to set the pieces, and will discuss basic mosaic technique, texture and contrast before you begin your own designs. All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring an object that is meaningful to you to include in your creation. Please note that the pendants are approximately 30mm long, so the objects should be quite small.
The workshop is free, and all levels are welcome.

Filmmaker Bio:

Aparna Sanyal is a National Award winning filmmaker who has worked extensively on documentaries and TV shows as director and producer for both Indian and international television since 1999. She was awarded the Rajat Kamal at the National Film Awards in 2012, the Charles Wallace India Trust grant for research in the UK in 2015 and recognised as a Young Creative Entrepreneur by the British Council in 2010. She is the co-founder of ‘The Red Door’, an initiative on Mental Health.

Her previous films include 'Tedhi Lakeer - The Crooked Line' (2002), 'A Drop of Sunshine' (2011), 'A Land, Strangely Familiar' (2013), 'Shunyata - when Kathak met Cham' (2014), Shovana (2017), and The Monks who won the Grammy (2018).

Drag queens are performance artists, almost always male, who dress in women's clothing and often act with exaggerated femininity and in feminine gender roles with a primarily entertaining purpose. They often exaggerate make-up such as eyelashes for dramatic, comedic or satirical effect. Drag queens are closely associated with gay men and gay culture, but can be of any sexual orientation or gender identity. They vary widely by class, culture, and dedication, from professionals who star in films to people who try drag very occasionally.

The activity, which is called doing drag, has many motivations, from individual self-expression to mainstream performance. Drag queen activities among stage and street performers may include lip-syncing, live singing, dancing, roasting etc.

The draft of NEP 2019 was the first document to be released by the newly elected government in May 2019 and was made public on June 2019. There were suggestions invited from the public. The draft policy is an important document about the education in the so-called new India and its implementation will have a great impact on all the stakeholders Therefore, Lamakaan believes that it needs to be discussed widely.

About Prof Anil Sadgopal: Prof Anil Sadgopal is an Indian educationist and activist, known for the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Programme and for advocacy related to the Right to Education (RTE) Act. He is a recipient of several awards and honours, including the Jamnalal Bajaj Award for 'Application of Science and Technology for Rural Development'. He was instrumental in setting up the Eklavya foundation in 1982. For over a decade, he was Professor of Education at Delhi University and headed its Department of Education during 1998-2001. Since 2004-2005, he has been campaigning for changes in the RTE Act, which he believes is flawed.

Education system of India is so rotten to its core that any mention of this anymore only sounds like a cliché. A sense of helplessness has clouded the people who for decades have seen that there isn’t any fundamental change in the status quo, no matter which regime is there at the helm. And naturally, the ultimate victims are the students. School-going students are suffering from severe anxiety and depression, not to say that the conditions amongst the college going youth is even more severe for they also face the immediate pressure of landing with a job as they graduate. The level of stress, depression, anxiety resulting from unrealistic expectations, lack of peer support, rampant competition etc. is only increasing day by day – so much so that many students are choosing the most unfortunate option of ending their lives altogether. According to a TOI report in Mar’18, one student is committing suicide every 55 mins in India. The same report states that 26,000 students had committed suicides during 2014-17. It hasn’t been long since we had to hear the news of IIT Hyderabad student Mark Andrew Charles succumbing to job pressure. In an yet another incident, Payal Tadvi from Topiwala National Medical College, Mumbai gave up her life facing caste discrimination and harassment inside the campus.

While the psychoanalysis increasingly focuses on the immediate causes behind the students’ suicides viz. depression, stress etc. But the question remains as to what it is that causes the students go into such a state at first place? Analyses employed mainly by psychiatric means tend to make the underlying systemic factors as secondary. It must be asked why after 72 years of independence, Indian state has failed to provide an environment in the campuses which is free from any kind of discrimination. Further, why hasn’t the state been able to ensure a respectable employment to everyone. After all, what it is that makes parents have unrealistic expectations from their children? What it is that causes this rat race amongst students and starts the process of dehumanizing from their age of innocence? How is it possible that even today the students from lower-castes have to face casteist slurs by upper-caste students? All of this cannot be understood merely from psychoanalytical dimensions. Instead, those dimensions must be placed in the overall socio-economic scenario of this country. Only then, we can come to a conclusion that can be a real guide to further action. Why does a person come into queer space? And how can we make space for all the reasons why they may be there? What is often our first response and immediate priority when a person comes.  How may we take care of one another with responsibility? How do we learn to say  'we are here for you'?  

Ponni Arasu is a queer feminist activist. She has been part of queer collectives and advocacy groups such as Nigah, Anjuman and Voices Against 377. In her capacity as a legal practitioner and researcher at the Alternative Law Forum in Bangalore, she worked with the LesBit collective. She is also a historian of public politics in Tamilnadu.

Nabikei (Footprint) Shri Prakash, 2017. 63 min The American Southwest—especially the sovereign Indigenous nations of Acoma, Laguna, and the Diné or Navajo Nation—has a long history of uranium mining. Once home to a booming economy and proudly called the Uranium Capital of the World, these Indian reservations and poor White communities are now littered with old mines, tailings dams, and other uranium contamination, which is the legacy of this deadly industry. On the Navajo Nation alone, there are more than 500 abandoned uranium mine sites that need to be addressed.

In spite of the US government’s Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and the Radiation Exposure and Compensation Act, supposedly strict and powerful regulatory agencies like the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency are almost helpless to mitigate the contamination left by the nuclear industry.
This film explores how colonialism, which came to the Southwest with Spanish conquest, has changed face in modern time, as it is played out in a new quest for mineral resources.
Contaminated land, water, and air have left these poor communities helpless. Their efforts to gain justice have failed. Indigenous and poverty-stricken communities who suffered the most are trapped and exploited, as new mining companies continue to disregard the health and environment of these people with the lure of a better economy, jobs and new In Situ Leach uranium mining methods.

Unfortunately, this is the same sad story repeated in other parts of the world including India, but in India it is the government itself undertaking the enterprise and repeating the same degradation in Jadugoda (Jharkhand).

The play is based on the conversation between the two legendary writers of their time. Ismat Chugtai and Manto were good friends. The play deals with some lighter moments of their personal life.

Climate change is here! We are already seeing monsoon vagaries every year and frequent extreme weather events like the very heavy rainfall in Mumbai in July 2019, and in Kerala in August 2018. The probability of remaining within 1.5-2oC temperature rise above pre-industrial times that scientists consider a do-not-cross redline now appears to be low. If greenhouse gas emissions do not come down drastically in the near future, temperature rise is likely to be 3-4oC, and the consequences of this will be catastrophic. South Asia is one of the two most vulnerable regions to climate change impacts. The 2015 inter-governmental Paris Agreement to check climate change does not seem to be succeeding. Curbing Democracy: UAPA / RTI / ART 370 Bills

One side Modi Government’s anti people policies are pushing majority of the masses towards unemployment and misery and on the other side the government has recently passed subsequent bills in Parliament which will curb the democracy further and establish a complete authoritative fascist state. Bill like UAPA is aimed at suppressing any dissenting voice by labelling them as terrorists. RTI bill is also amended so that the government can operate without any accountibility and at the same time propagate misinfomations among people. And the recent Bill to abrogate article 370 is an anti democratic and autocratic step towards the people of Kashmir which will fuel fire in future and adversely impact the whole country. It is the duty of everyone now to get back the lost democratic freedom through these bills by raising their voices against it. In order to understand further about these bills in details, all are invited for a discussion at Lamakaan.

Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

Write Club Hyderabad helps you pen your thoughts, spill your mind and finally make an appointment with the writer in your head. We conduct free, weekly events that foster writing. Our Meetups aim at helping writers reach their goals in a supportive, collaborative, social setting. Writing doesn't have to be all by oneself. We welcome anyone who writes, regardless of genre, language or age. We have members writing novels, short stories, poetry, screenplays, essays, school reports and more. What we do, basically: One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring forth a theme and writing exercises. We all then write to the host’s prompts and guidelines for about an hour. Once we're done writing, we read out our write-ups (optional). Maidanam, one of the most famous and most controversial of Chalam’s novels, dramatises his ideas on marriage, freedom and the moral issues involved in them. Rajeswari, is a young, frustrated housewife. It all starts with her thorough disillusionment with her tradition-bound, unfeeling, emotionally sterile lawyer-husband who is given to treating her as a piece of property, as one who fulfills his sexual and social needs.

Her deliverance comes in the form of Ameer, a client of her husband. Their very first meeting is an emotionally charged and sexually exciting experience. His looks pierce her clothes and caress her all over her body. This is a new experience for her. She has never known anything so exhilarating like that before. When finally Ameer embraces her, in the absence of her husband of course, she reacts with a cry of joy. She feels that Ameer has endowed divinity on her. This realization marks the death of her old self. She plunges headlong into a life of passion and bliss with Ameer.

Soon enough Ameer, asks her to “come away” with him. They decide to go away to “Maidanam,” a wide open plain where they will not be disturbed by society. For a while Rajeswari agonizes over whether she is driven by animalistic lust or noble love or the simple desire to free herself from the shackles of soul-killing traditions.

After living like that for months Rajeshwari gets pregnant. Ameer does not want the baby and wants Rajeshwari to get rid of her pregnancy. Maternal instincts take over her and she refuses. They have a fight and Ameer leaves her alone and vanishes. After Ameer has gone away Rajeswari turns to Meera a handsome sixteen years boy in a major way for emotional and material support.

Hoping to get back Ameer she decides to get rid of her pregnancy with the help of Meera. Things get complicated when Meera starts developing feelings for Rajeshwari. Meanwhile Ameer comes back. He does not like how close Rajeshwari and Meera have become. Now Rajeswari has to choose between Ameer who she truly loves or Meera who acted as her pillar of support in desperate times.

Does the law really decide our lives? Or offer the final solutions to all of our problems? Should we rest our hopes in law? How do legal decisions play out in our daily lives? In what ways is the Law our ally, opponent, co-traveller or support?

Vasudha Nagaraj is a senior advocate who practices in High Court of
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. She argues for tribals displaced by
development projects, men and women subjected to police violence,
women facing sexual assault and discrimination and many public interest
litigations too.

The Metaphysics of the Tree-Frog's Silence is a volume of poetry written by Ajithan G. Kurup when he was in his twenties. The volume was published by Poetrywala posthumously after his tragic and sudden death in April 2015.

Adil Jussawalla writes in the introduction to the volume: 'To enter Ajithan G. Kurup’s poetic world is to risk, in the words of his title poem, dancing “headlong down precipices". It’s rare to find a contemporary poet who dares near-unattainable heights and fearful depths on dancing words... Ajithan's erudition spans a great many cultures and languages, classical and contemporary, and while some of it may seem Greek to the reader who shuns difficulty, it’s a Greek the poet seems truly to have lived in, a language internalised, as though, in fact, the poet was at home in the Greece of ancient times, or had passed through it as a passionately interested traveller.

Ajithan has the uncanny gift of being able to conjure back lands he has been to, using
his own peculiar brand of magic, and to dazzle us with lands he has never seen (as in “Sketches from a Log…”). He is voyager, shaman, and most often seer, in one person.'

Jeet Thayil, another contemporary poet, says: "It is our loss that we did not know Ajithan Kurup’s work when he was alive, and we did not celebrate his brave and lonely project: to render the unsayable into language. He cannot be imitated or replaced, only admired."

Set in West Bengal a year before the historic decision to repeal the anti-sodomy law Penal Code 377, Until and Unless follows the story of four individuals and the impact of systemic oppression via India's legislative system on their lives. The film features Sintu, a transwoman community leader raised in the Sheoraphuli red-light district; Nitu, a transwoman sex worker who lives a dual identity as a man named Nitai; Lovely, a Koti person who lives a closeted life while working in an office environment, and Pratap, a trans teen still navigating her identity. Through juxtaposing their stories with interviews from lawyers and activists working to oppose these laws, the film shows the lived consequences of state and social violence on community self-representations.

आज़ाद हिंदुस्तान की पैदाइश के छह महीने भी नहीं गुज़रे कि गांधीजी का क़त्ल कर दिया गया। आख़िर जिसे राष्ट्रपिता कहा जाता था, उसे राष्ट्र के जन्म की घड़ी में ही क्यों मार डाला गया? हिंदुस्तान के जन्म और गांधीजी की मौत के बीच के इस रिश्ते को किस तरह समझें?आज़ादी के बाद से क्या हिंदुस्तान इस क़त्ल की शर्म से बरी होने की कोशिश करता रहा है? आज हम जिस लम्हे में हैं, क्या यह कहा जात सकता है कि हिंदुस्तान ने अब ख़ुद को गांधी से पूरी तरह आज़ाद कर लिया है?

Not even six months after the birth of Azad Hindustan, Gandhiji was murdered. After all, who was called the Father of the Nation, why was he killed at the time of the birth of the nation? How should we understand this relationship between the birth of India and the death of Gandhiji? Since independence, has India been trying to get rid of this murder? At the moment we are in today, can it be said that India has now freed itself completely from Gandhi?
About The Hasan Memorial Lecture:

The Hasan Memorial Lecture was instituted in 2014 and is held each year at Lamakaan on August 15 with an eye to the emergent political and economic crisis in India/South Asia or the world. It is our single most important programming effort each year and draws a very significant audience. The previous editions of the lectures were delivered by Prof. Jayati Ghosh, Prof.Gail Omvedt, Bharat Patankar and Prof.Kodandaram, Siddharath Varadarajan, et al.

Mr. Moyed Hasan in whose memory the annual lecture is named, was a scientist, a photographer, an environmentalist and a person with a deep concern for the lives of ordinary people. His house, that he named Lamakaan (as in the Sufi literary tradition to mean 'an abode for those who travel without any worldly possessions') " has now become an important part of Hyderabad’s cultural and political life. Mr. Hasan left behind an imaginary of what an engaged life is. From science to art, and environment to international affairs he encompassed a vision of how we must live our lives meaningfully.



About the Speaker:
Apoorvanand is professor at the Hindi Department of University of Delhi. An avowed secularist, he is known for his frequent interventions in day-to-day politics, and for being a tireless champion of minority rights. He is one of the most vocal critics of the Sangh Parivar in the Hindi belt.

With the "outsider" success of "Kirikou and the Sorceress", one of the frequent questions asked by journalists was: "This success must have come as a big surprise!". It was not a question, but a statement. My answer was always the same: "Not at all!" Even if I was prepared for a disastrous release, I was also ready for a triumph. However, something unexpected happened: the nature, depth and permanence of the Kirikou baby.
A Character was born and loved.

Mosaic pendant workshop

Join artist Emily Bhargava on Saturday the 17th from 10:30-12:30 to learn to make mosaic pendants using glass, beads and found objects. We will use an epoxy clay to set the pieces, and will discuss basic mosaic technique, texture and contrast before you begin your own designs. All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring an object that is meaningful to you to include in your creation. Please note that the pendants are approximately 30mm long, so the objects should be quite small.
The workshop is free, and all levels are welcome.
Class size limited to 10.

Foliage 2019 is the initiative of the Greenpeace India Hyderabad volunteers to promote awareness on the issue of Climate Crisis. Animation & VFX industry is one of booming industry in India. Plus, there are so many individuals who wants to learn 3d either as a hobby or to get in to industry in long run. Parliament passed the RTI Amendment bill that seeks to give the Central Government the authority to decide on the tenure & salaries of the Information Commissioners. The session will discuss the possible impact of this amendment and what should ordinary citizens look out for.

The film wonders if the process of dying can become meaningful; and if embracing our own mortality might be the key to a more fulfilling life.

Filmmaker Bio:

Aparna Sanyal is a National Award winning filmmaker who has worked extensively on documentaries and TV shows as director and producer for both Indian and international television since 1999. She was awarded the Rajat Kamal at the National Film Awards in 2012, the Charles Wallace India Trust grant for research in the UK in 2015 and recognised as a Young Creative Entrepreneur by the British Council in 2010. She is the co-founder of ‘The Red Door’, an initiative on Mental Health.

Her previous films include 'Tedhi Lakeer - The Crooked Line' (2002), 'A Drop of Sunshine' (2011), 'A Land, Strangely Familiar' (2013), 'Shunyata - when Kathak met Cham' (2014), Shovana (2017), and The Monks who won the Grammy (2018).

Kabaddi, the Game of Partition is a period drama of the bloodiest time in Indian history. This play is a testament of the mass that was made to participate in one of the biggest political gambles ever. Sure; nations were divided, treaties were signed, tanks were loaded, and armies were deported. But what the people went through, is what has carried the legacy due. We have all read enough about Gandhi, Nehru, Jinnah, the commission, India and Pakistan; it is now time to relieve the madness as citizens of the country. The essence of the play thrives on just one question, did the independence really set us free?
