Dollar City: Documentary Film
Fri Oct 14, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
Dollar City

Dir: Amudhan R.P.

77 min; Tamil with English subtitles; 2016; Documentary

Produced by Raj Kajendra

Synopsis:

Tirupur aka Dollar City, well known for its thousands of export oriented garment hosiery units

and millions  of migrant workers, symbolizes a development model where the state machinery,

exporters, small and big entrepreneurs, commission agents, trade unionists and workers converge

to prioritize export and to earn dollars by ignoring, marginalizing and eventually breaking the

laws that protect the environment and workers’ rights.

The film provides an inside view of a successful economic system where there is connivance and

consensus between the masters, mediators and the workers, where the ambitions and loyalties

collapse, where the rights become a privilege, where duty becomes an opportunity and where

one’s desperation is another’s prospect.

The fact that there has not been a workers’ strike in Tirupur in the past 20 years, as proudly

expressed by an exporter in the film, can be seen  as classic example of the  Gramscian idea of

manufacture of consent.

Screening of Modern Times
Sun Oct 16, 11:00 AM
Parag Verma and Shishir Gupta
Albert Einstein once famously said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” We don’t know the context of his statement but it can be extrapolated to the realms of motion pictures. Not many actors-directors have been able to portray the intricacies of human life in an easy going manner. Charlie Chaplin is undoubtedly class apart in this league. The humor we see in his films is not just for the momentary entertainment of our conscious being, it leaves a deep mark on our sub-conscious being too. The way he touches the lives of the downtrodden is exemplary.

The discussion forum ‘In Defense of Reason’ in its pursuit to promote reason and rationality in the society is going to screen one of Chaplin’s gems ‘Modern Times.’ The time in the movie is during the Great Depression when Chaplin’s iconic Tramp character embodies the suffering of the poor industrial worker who also happens to be generous and sensible apart from being hilariously naive. Chaplin was very attentive to the economic and social problems of his day and it becomes clear from the theme of the movie which is a comment on alienation and dehumanization of laborers inherent in capitalism. Chaplin also declared in 1931, “Unemployment is the key question. Machines should improve the well-being of humanity, instead of causing tragedy and unemployment.”

Where theory would make long speeches about these social issues, Chaplin uses humor to better display the class society with its contradictions and exploitation of man by man. The relevance of this film even today is unmatched.

The idea is to watch and enjoy the movie together followed by an informal open discussion session on its various socio-economic and aesthetic aspects. You all are most welcome to attend the screening.

The story is about the communal violence of 1947. Ishwar Singh, a Sikh fails to make love to his mistress Kalwant. Bokul (2015|Assamese|110min)

Presented by Popup Talkies
Synopsis: Raktim returns to his home town in the Brahmaputra valley, after a break of several years. He finds it hard to recognise the changed values of people, even of those he knew very closely at one time. As Raktim goes across the city on his scooter, he picks up the tales of three distinct characters, a young rickshaw puller, a woman with a daughter and an old fisherman, all of whom happen to be named Bokul. The film explores a pattern that emerges from the lives of the three characters as seen by an outsider who was once an insider. Changing realities, shifts in values and displacement of people point to this pattern.

In what appears to be a rare encounter between two filmmakers, R.V. Ramani, a cinematographer and an auteur in his own right, decides to engage in a ‘visual conversation’ with Anand Patwardhan, as the latter goes about screening his films across diverse audiences in the country. The film unfolds a range of poignant perspectives around Anand’s screening events and seems to raise primary questions in documentary filmmaking and representational politics.

'MARYAADA…'

The unspoken boundary of the psyche; the silent barrier of our hearts and souls. Some dedicate their entire lives to preserving it, sacrificing their passions and crushing the very feelings and emotions that make them question the ideals they have bound themselves and those who love them in and in the process earn the epithet of ‘Maryaada Purushottam’. While others spend their lives straining beneath the weight of the heavy ideals imposed on them by society - struggling to break free.

But what lies beyond? Beyond definitions of right or wrong; good or evil; ugly or beautiful – when the robes handed down over centuries of ‘civilized’ society are stripped away – what is real? Is it necessary to choose one truth: either that of the victor or the vanquished? Can it be that each of us gets to choose our own truth and each is equally real?

SUTRADHAR brings you an evening with two short plays:

To Mi Navhech - Marathi Play
Fri Nov 4, 8:00 PM
Vimal Natya Samaj
The Drama "To Mi Navhech" is a intense Court Room Drama

based on the famous Madhav Kazi Case of the 60's. This was

covered immensely by Press & Professor Mr. P.K. Atre of

Marathi Daily "Maratha", used to write editorials on the case

during the court proceedings which were very popular.

The Drama is totally based on Court Room Scenes laced with

intermittent flash back of the witness/victims. Where the

accused is shown in different guises & again comes back to

Court Room, in the Original guise. These fast changes of guise

and scene is the key to this Drama.

Lakhoba Lokhande, the central character, has duped many

people including Girls, Married them, Usurped all their wealth

and vanished only to surface with a different name and

different guise to dupe another girl, he has even murdered a

Screening: Eisenstein's October
Sun Nov 6, 1:30 PM
Parag Verma and Shishir Gupta
The forum – ‘In Defense of Reason’ dedicated to the cause of promoting reasoning and rationality in society, is going to screen the movie ‘October: Ten Days That Shook the World’ on the centenary anniversary of the October Revolution. It was the first revolution after the establishment of ‘Paris Commune’ which was led by the working class. Russian masses down and out by the World War launched offensive on the White Palace of Petrograd (now ‘St. Petersburg’), led by the Bolsheviks on 25th October, 1917 (according to the old calendar) with the slogan of ‘Bread, Peace & Land’ and established their justified rule on the state power after a revolutionary struggle. This film made on the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution under the combined direction of Sergei Eisenstein and Grigori Aleksandrov is akin to a live documentary of the fateful mega event. Some might think that what is the need of discussion on a revolution and its legacy by a forum dedicated to promote logic and critical thinking? In answer to this, we would like to quote Marx, “Revolutions are the locomotives of history.” For a detailed discussion, you are invited on the screening. We will discuss some important questions such as the relevance of the October Revolution today! In which circumstances did this Revolution succeed? What was the historical contribution of that Revolution in the development of the toiling masses of Soviet Union? We will also discuss about the revolutionary experiment by Eisenstein in the form of ‘Montage.’ The revolutionary vigor and spirit of those “Ten Days of Revolution That Shook the World” are still alive amongst the working classes all over the world. ‘In Defense of Reason’ invites you to watch the movie and to participate in the discussion post that in Lamakaan at 1:30 PM, 6th Nov, 2016.

A Blue Print for Love by Chatura Rao - Book Launch

Haunted by memories of her dead sister and childhood home, Reva meets her sister's then-boyfriend, Suveer, every year for a day in a friendship that seems to offer each of them a way to come to terms with the past. Suveer is reporting an election story of 'dishousing' on a bungalow belonging to a Muslim businessman in a Hindu-dominated area of Gandhinagar. Unable to remain objective when the mob turns on Mahnoor, a young Muslim woman, he is beaten up and hospitalised. Without a second thought Reva leaves her husband and goes to him.
Suveer and Reva seek shelter with Mahnoor and her husband Zahyan, who find the life they'd painstakingly constructed is slowly unravelling.

This gripping story asks the question: where is home? Reva and Suveer, Zahyan and Mahnoor, be it in circumstances of love or loss, ever seek a path to return by.

Dollar City: Documentary Film

Synopsis: Raktim returns to his home town in the Brahmaputra valley, after a break of several years.

Dr. Maringanti will bring his work on social justice and the role of faith in organizing. The broader goal of the conversation is to open up the taken for granted understandings of faith and religion as relationships to the self, to the other and to our collective existence in rapidly altering urban setttings.

As last time, we promise good music and great opening gambits. It is for you to make it a great conversation.

SITA + SHOORPANAKHA

A retelling of the Ramayana from the point of view of Sita & Shoorpanakha.
Directed by: Vinay Varma
Written by : Shivani Tibrewala, adapted from short stories by Sara Joseph & translated into English by Vasanthi Sankaranarayan.

Lakhoba Lokhande, the central character, has duped many

people including Girls, Married them, Usurped all their wealth

and vanished only to surface with a different name and

different guise to dupe another girl, he has even murdered a

victim. During the proceedings, he decides to plead his own

case.

The last act which is being staged today is the final part where

in arguments take place and the judgment is delivered.

Pranks can be notorious, but the truth can be uglier.

About the Play - How many of us have dealt with imprisonment of some sort inside our own homes? Today, freedom of speech, freedom of thought and freedom of any kind is rare to come by. Hasn`t the world seen some very disturbing parental relationships? The impact of a disturbed childhood is grave. In fact, no one else can understand just how bad it is.

This is the story of four hostel roommates (Anil, Ajay, Sirish and Rakesh), who plan to play a prank on their friend to pull his leg. As they have been friends for a while now, they know each other pretty well. One day, Ajay`s 3 friends plan to tell him that his father is waiting for him in the room.
