Singing by Sheetal Sathe &Troupe
Sat Feb 13, 2:00 PM
Lamakaan
Inviting all for an afternoon of "Performance and Talk by Shital Sathe and Troupe at Lamakaan at 2 pm on 13th, the Saturday.

The dynamic poet-singer from Kabir Kala Manch (KKM) and some of her new co-performers will sing and speak - an event of tribute to Rohith Vemula.

This will be followed by an informal interaction with the singers and Anand Patwardhan, Documentary film maker.

It may be recalled that the KKM, a working class and mostly Dalit cultural troupe, was forced to go into hiding in 2011 after the police arrested and tortured one of them on suspicion of associating with Naxalites.

In 2012 a documentary film “Jai Bhim Comrade” featuring the KKM won a National Award and a Maharashtra State award. The prize money was used to start a KKM Defence Committee, whose lawyers succeeded in getting bail for the arrested KKM.

With renewed confidence that the awakening of civil society would give them a decent chance to seek justice, the rest of the KKM members in hiding decided to give themselves up to the police for questioning. In April 2013 Shital Sathe and her husband, the poet Sachin Mali, did a Satyagraha by singing songs in front of the Maharashtra State Assembly and were duly arrested. A month later the rest of the KKM followed by singing songs in the office of the Maharashtra Home Minister, R. R. Patil. From this group, Sagar Gorkhe and Ramesh Gaichor were taken into custody, but the Minister assured those present that the State would view their matter sympathetically.

3 months later Shital Sathe was released by the Bombay High Court on bail, in part, because she was in the late stages of pregnancy. Almost three years later, Sachin, Sagar and Ramesh are still in jail, twice denied bail by the same High Court judge, awaiting a trial that never quite starts. They are now appealing for bail in the Supreme Court.

Shital Sathe, who has formed an independent group, has been performing in many parts of Maharashtra. She often sings songs composed by Sachin from his prison cell. The story of India’s marginalized people, whom the system suppressed for thousands of years, as well as the need to build a secular and democratic society, vividly and soul searchingly emerges from these songs.

It is no accident that in recent times on several occasions where Shital has performed, the ABVP has taken upon itself to disrupt, or threaten to disrupt her performances, on the grounds that she is an “anti-national”.

We have seen what such a concerted campaign did to Rohit Vemula.

Sincerely, Anand Patwardhan

KAHANIWALA - 'The Cupid Awakens'
Sun Feb 14, 3:00 PM
Suhas Bhatnagar
It is a story written by Suhas Bhatnagar two years back and the title is "THE CUPID AWAKENED".

He says, "when I conceived this story, the poem by Keki N. Daruwala " Crossing of Rivers " was in my mind. The woman character I created resembled MY INSIDE WOMAN. When it comes to Indian context, women are more impressive than being expressive. My character Onindita is expressive too. This is a story of two lonely persons Tarani and Onindita, both in their mid forties. I am a narrator in the story, while in fact, Tarani is my birth Horoscope name. I see Onindita as Nityouvani (Draupadi) of Mahabharatha. She had the favour of ever youth. Being young is just a state of mind, with your soulmate you are always young. The story reaches its climax in just seven days.I still remember a comment from a scientist from U.S. Ms Saumya and I quote, " while reading the story I felt a light music was going all round."
I had thought after writing this story that I shall not be able to write beyond it but after it too I wrote love poems collection in Hindi."

Suhas' story is available on www.speakingtree.in under my blog posts. It has a very good viewing.

The Bankrupts (Haal-E-Kangaal)
Sun Feb 14, 4:00 PM
PN Ramchandra
"The Bankrupts or Haal-E-Kangaal" is a two-character film set in an apartment in a Housing Colony in the City of Mumbai, India. The two characters are caught in their web of their own making and by the end of the film realise a sense of emptiness, worthlessness and bankruptcy.

It is about two filmmakers who meet after a gap of fifteen years. As one of them narrates a script of a film to the another, the past catches up with them and for the two friends the celebration soon turns into a secession of one up-man-ship where accusations flow freely - the question of success, of failures and of a subtle comparison of individual achievements arise. The duo by the end of the film realise that they are as bankrupt as ever - literally, and in all sense of the word.

Walking the Walk
Tue Feb 16, 6:30 PM
Queer Campus Hyderabad (Abhi and Satya)
Walking the Walk follows the participants of Hyderabad’s queer Swabhimana(self-respect) pride march in February 2015.

The walk draws inspiration from the most recently successful social movement which led to formation of a brand new state in India, Telangana. This film demonstrates how a group of unfunded individuals embarked on a quest for freedom in organizing this pride. It shows how a collective of activists do more than talk the talk; they set into motion a political movement that celebrates small successes, demands resources for working-class transgender people, stands up to police violence, and allows the community to grieve for lost loved ones.

In India, the most visible face to the queer community – the Hijra community – also is the most victimised: rape, violence, discrimination, and even death are motifs of their daily existence. To a lesser degree, the other transgender, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and queer-identified Indians go through similar ordeals. The film also brings attention to these gruesome acts of violence to raise awareness within the mainstream society.

Walking as a form of protest against discrimination and exclusion has a long history in India. Dr. Ambedkar’s historical Mahad Satyagraha in 1927 protested caste discrimination at one of its fundamental levels: access to water. It was Gandhi’s walk, Salt Satyagraha in 1930 against the unfair salt tax of the British that ignited the people to take to the road. Since then countless anti caste and anti colonial marches have galvanised the masses to fight for freedom – but these struggles must be kept vitally alive today. It is important to not only fight the British colonial residue in the form of an archaic Sec. 377 (that criminalizes homosexual behaviour) but also to fight the deep rooted stigma in the society and bring it to understand and accept alternate genders and sexualities. A public walk aims to do just that. Queer Indians have learned not to hesitate to talk the talk. This film shows how they also walked the walk.

All are welcome.

Fri Feb 19, 6:00 PM
Public Affairs Section - U.S. Consulate General Hyderabad
Inviting all for an evening of Lecture by Ms. Kate Mogulescu, a supervising attorney in the Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Defense Practice in the US on the topic of "Criminal Justice Advocacy for Survivors of Trafficking".

In an open discussion, Moderated by Dr. Manisha Bangar, NVP, Mulniwasi Sangh, the speaker Ms. Mogulescu will address many issues like 'How can lawyers and other advocates better represent survivors of trafficking in the criminal justice system? How can communities understand and meet survivors’ legal and other critical needs? How can courts and other criminal justice agencies better identify and provide support to trafficked persons? How do arrest policies figure into anti-trafficking efforts?".

She will also refer to pertinent areas like Working with Sexually Exploited Youth in Criminal and Juvenile Court Systems, Bridging the Gap –Community Based Organizations & Justice Systems among other issues.

In 2011, Ms. Mogulescu founded and developed the first anti-trafficking project to be implemented by a public defender organization. She continues to run the Exploitation Intervention Project, which aims to better identify victims of trafficking and exploitation among individuals prosecuted in New York City, and regularly trains public defenders, prosecutors, and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system, both in New York City and nationally, on best practices to identify victims of human trafficking and prevent the criminalization of vulnerable populations. She has provided testimony before the New York City Council, the New York State Legislature and the United Nations Human Rights Committee. This project, the Survivor Reentry Project, will begin in 2016 and will work to counteract the harmful impact of criminalization on trafficking survivors.

DEMYSTIFYING CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ

The Liberator of the Indigenous Oppressed , Women, A friend of Indigenous Musalmans.

A Panel Discussion:To highlight the real Shivaji that he was.
Brave, courageous, determined, invincible and radical not only on territorial battle fields but on the battle fields of religio-cultural chasm of 17th Century Maharashtra. This non-brahmin, non-kshatriya Indigenous King through his egalitarian rule always challenged the orthodoxy and was able to create a cultural, political milieu that sowed the seeds of a cultural revolution which later bloomed in the life of Rashtrapita Jyoti Rao Phule, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in modern India and their struggles for Equality.
Scope of the discussion:
Women dignity , progress and Chhatrapati Shivaji.
Chhatrapati Shivaji the friend and benefactor of Musalmans and Indigenous majority.
Chhatrapati Shivaji’s Rule – the Kingdom of Equality for the Sons of the soil.

SCREENING OF & PANEL DISCUSSION ON THE DOCUMENTARY FILM

“STREE TU AZAAD KAHAN”

(Women ! Where Thou Art Free ???)

Script Writing and Direction
Dr. Manisha Bangar
Mr. Jeevan Gawande
On 19th February 2016 @ 7. 30 pm
Venue ---- LAMAKAAN , Banjara Hills , Hyderabad

This 45 minutes documentary film explores the deplorable status of Women in Indian society in all spheres – educational, cultural, vocational, political & family units irrespective of their religious background but definitely following a Varna based structural hierarchical level of degradation within the Gender cosmos. The film mostly containing interviews and related live footage's weaves a narrative which inspires the viewer to see through the Gender based oppression as being primarily structural and social, “Varna / Caste ideology based rather than conflict between two sexes particularly in the Indian context.
It also motivates the viewer into questioning and challenging the oppression of women by Religio-cultural hegemonic class which has cleverly cloaked and justified this oppression under th garb of “Tradition, “”Supreme culture , “”Custom” or by glorifying it as divine sacrosanct and therefore infallible.
That this political conspiracy of many thousand of years has resulted in women being thrown in a bottomless pit of superstition, poverty, ignorance, dependency and slavery even in the 21st millennium instigates the viewers to seek solutions to stop the inexorable descent of Woman and Mankind on the Indian soil and all over the world.

All are welcome.

Hyderabad Queer Swabhimana Yatra Organising Commiitee
On the eve of the Queer Swabhimana Yatra 2016, join us as we celebrate the effort and contributions that went into making the Walk. As we aim to own the streets on February 21, painting the city in rainbow colors and expressing our resistance in a dignified existence that is our guarantee by birth, we also remember the sacrifices that our community has made till date. Pour out those emotions onto posters and placards that shall mark the Walk.
We also have a mini bazaar where you can buy art, food and other exciting stuff! Meanwhile you can also donate voluntarily for funding the Walk itself! But do come to encourage and join our queer artist friends as they come together to enliven this Jalsa of ours that we shall remember for a long time to come.
In solidarity and dissent, we stand together. For ourselves and for others, for whom oppression is an integral part of life. Do come.

Nationalism:From HCU to JNU&back
Sat Feb 20, 3:00 PM
Anant Maringanti & Lamakaan
Nationalism is in the air. In fact it has been in the air for the last several months. Its most concrete manifestation however has been in the form of accusations by its spokespersons against individuals and groups as 'antinational'. Whether it has reduced the menace of anti nationalism and terrorism or not is yet to be established, but it has most certainly exacted a heavy price from those who have been named antinational. In this structured discussion hosted and led by Anant Maringanti we will explore the moral charge of ideas like nation, nationhood and nationalism and the different historical, philosophical, political and spiritual bases of these ideas. We will also explore from the legal and constitutional perspective what may be considered offences against the nation in the Indian context. In the last few weeks, a cry for justice that rang out of HCU campus appears to have traveled over to campuses elsewhere. The specific context of each campus seems to be shaping the debate in a new way. What are the questions of justice that are getting articulated and which questions are getting sidelined in this journey. Is the spirit of the age trying to tell us something ? Are we hearing it ?
Come join us with Anant Maringanti, Professors Amita Dhanda and Siddharth Chauhan from NALSAR University of Law on Saturday February 20th at 3:00pm.

All are welcome.

Spain&Catalunya-Story of 2states
Sun Feb 21, 1:30 PM
Paloma Ventura
Inviting all for a talk on the Story of SPAIN & CATALUNYA NOWADAYS: INDEPENDENCE FOR THE SOCIAL CHANGE by Paloma Ventura, an activist in Barcelona Underground Cultures.

Catalonia is a state in current Spain with 16% population and land area appealing for independence from Spain. This stems from a wide range of issues — the most notable of which are Social, cultural and economic.

Originally an independent state in Europe, Catalan Barcelona was sieged in a battle of Spanish Succession in 1714.

Three centuries on, many in Catalonia — a prosperous region in the northeastern corner of the Iberian Peninsula — are seeking to reverse that defeat.

Catalans who support independence believe that the taxes residents pay to Spain’s central government are not commensurate with the benefits the region receives. That sentiment has been heightened by rising unemployment and debt resulting from the global financial crisis — especially as Madrid focuses on bolstering poorer regions of the country.

Identity politics also play a role in Catalonia’s push for independence. Residents speak Catalan, a language previously banned under the long dictatorial rule of Francisco Franco in the middle of the 20th century. They have invested great effort in protecting their language and culture, which have contributed to the creation of a strong national identity.

Paloma Ventura studied Sociology and Social Movements.

Punishment Park - A Film
Tue Feb 23, 6:30 PM
Lamakaan
"What good is a nationalist who loves his nation but not a fellow national"

'Punishment Park' is a pseudo-documentary by Peter watkins about a some Police officers escorting a group of free thinkers, activists, rebels, hippies, draft dodgers, and anti-establishment types across the desert in a type of "capture the national flag" game.

The film brilliantly intercuts with interrogation room scenes of the 'arrested rebels' - who ask in return the authorities to 'cross their heart and say if they are more patriotic than them selves in chains'.

As the representatives of the 60's counter-culture get nearer to passing this arbitrary test, the soldiers become increasingly hostile, attempting to force the hippies out of their pacifist behavior. A lot of this film appears improvised and in several scenes real tempers seem to flare as some of the 'acting' got overaggressive.

This is a interesting exercise in situational ethics. The cinema-veritie style, hand-held camera, and ambiguous demands of the director - would the actors be able to maintain their roles given the hazing they were taking - pushed some to the brink. The cast's emotions are clearly on the surface.

Unfortunately this film has gone completely underground and is released in a very very limited cinemas and killed by mainstream media.

This mockumentary is relatable to current day's happening across all nations.

Detection of Gravitational waves
Sun Feb 28, 11:00 AM
Priya and Najam Hasan
Welcome to Lamakaan for a discussion on the topic "Gravitational waves" on National Science Day - the birth anniversary of Sir CV Raman.

In 1905, Einstein postulated the Special Theory of Relativity which deals with inertial frames. In 1916, he worked out the General Theory of Relativity in which he proposed the distortion of space time as the cause behind the force of gravity. The detection of these waves had to wait for another 100 years. As a celebration of National Science Day, we shall discuss the detection of gravitational waves and India's role in gravitational wave detection.

Dr. Priya and Prof. najam Hasan will present the topic today.

The event is free and all are welcome (Including non-science audience also).

Todd has succeeded eminently in establishing Kabir’s teachings in the modern context illuminating them by up-to- date observations and his own experiences.

Find out how the teachings of the 15th century poet Kabir are relevant in this era. Join the debate to voice what you think and embark on whole new journey of life!

Trafficking survivors - Advocacy

In addition, her critiques of anti-prostitution policing policies have been published in the New York Times and elsewhere.

Ms. Mogulescu recently received the support of the Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime to create and implement a national training and technical assistance program for lawyers serving survivors of human trafficking in the United States. This project, the Survivor Reentry Project, will begin in 2016 and will work to counteract the harmful impact of criminalization on trafficking survivors.

ON OCCASION OF CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

Dr. Manisha Bangar, NVP, Mulniwasi Sangh.
