Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane ( a monologue in Hindi )

UDAAN Performing Arts
Presents A Hindi Play

Shakkar Ke Paanch Dane ( a monologue in Hindi )

About The Play - Rajkumar has been requested to write a poem for a compilation to be published. If you knew Rajkumar you’d realize the absurdity of the request.
In an hour long monologue, Rajkumar tells us about his unremarkable life in his nondescript village and the five grains of sugar – the five people – who have stood out in this drab life for reasons stranger than fiction. The filmy mother; her poet brother Pundaleek; Raghu, the school hero; old man Radhey; and the anonymous ‘Truckwala dost’ . As Rajkumar talks, the five grains become a single life-game that he has been unknowingly playing for years…and Rajkumar realizes that everyone has a story inside them.

Often described as ‘a bellyful of laughs’, Alan Ayckbourn’s unusual play ‘GIZMO’ was written specifically for performance by young people and offers a challenging and entertaining performance piece for young actors. A light-hearted, slightly futuristic comedy, ‘Gizmo’ offers convincing dialogue and a degree of physicality that would certainly be great fun for young people to enact.

Nation-State and India-A lecture
Sat Nov 21, 11:00 AM
Lamakaan
Join us for a two day lecture on "Nation-State and India: Examining critically and dialectically" by Maharishi at 11am on Sat & Sun on 21,22 Nov.

India’s education is a market-driven, job-oriented and certificate-churning system. Such an education system neither has the inclination nor the ideological capability to equip us with the scientific tools to examine the complex, non-linear, unequal and dynamic societies and systems of India with ca. 130 Crore peoples and the world with ca. 730 crore peoples.

Concepts like Critical-thinking have been co-opted into serving the same narrow goals of the job-market more efficiently and scoring top marks but not for empowering us with the scientific tools to look at the world critically and make it a humane place to live for next generations.

It is from this backdrop, we would like to hold series of sessions at Lamakaan. The aim is to equip the participants with the scientific tools by dwelling deep into one topic and looking at it critically and dialectically using scientific perspectives.

Such sessions help us not only in understanding people in our personal lives scientifically but also help us examine the world around us - whether it is societies or systems - dispassionately with intellectual maturity.

The first topic selected for this series is “Nation-State and India: Examining critically”. It covers

- What does a nation-state mean?
- How nation-states emerged?
- How ideology forms nations.
- Is India a nation-state?
- Pre and post-1947 characteristics of India
- Violence and nation-states
- How sacred is sovereignty?
- What does it take to be INDIAN?
- Crisis of global economy and ecology vis-à-vis future of nation-states

About the speaker:
P. Maharishi is a learner and researcher on Marxian Methods of Analysis and Synthesis. While working in the USA and Europe for couple of years he observed those societies and systems closely and enriched his perspective. He wishes the Mother Earth to be without borders, military, police, courts, jails and worst of all currency, which gave birth to all these and some more unearthly concepts. He opines that Mother does not like her children to divide and fight/hate each other.

All are welcome to these interactive classes. Researchers, students, activists can benefit from these free sessions.

KHOON DIY BAARAV - A Film
Fri Dec 4, 7:30 PM
Iffat Fatima
Screening a film KHOON DIY BAARAV (Kashmiri/English) by Iffat Fatima.

The film loosely meaning 'Blood leaves a trail' made over nine years, enters the vexed political scenario in Kashmir through the lives of families of the victims of enforced disappearances. It explores memory as a mode of resistance, constantly confronting reality and morphing from the personal to the political, the individual to the collective. Struggling to find new ways of expression - storytelling, art, symbol and ritual - sometimes spilling out on to the streets, it looks at the ways in which those affected by violence have no choice but to remember. The chain of memory, often non-linear, is both their defense as well as their act of defiance against powerful instruments of the state that try to erase their individuality.

The conflict in Kashmir is among the long-standing political conflicts in the world. It has taken a heavy toll on lives, on sanity and on the idea of normality. While it has turned the Indian state coarse and brutal, it has turned the local population, recipients of several decades of unrelenting violence, defiant and angry.

The film is a non-sequential account of personal narratives and reminiscences ruptured by violence, undermined by erasure and over-ridden by official documents that challenge truth. Opening out the real and the human as against the abstract and the brutal the film seeks to confront advocates of amnesia in Kashmir as well as in other conflict zones. It questions the militaristic approach to resolve political problems, by which communities and lives within it get invaded and destroyed, even as it shatters personal dreams and desires. The film appeals for a political resolution to the Kashmir issue, which has by now affected five generations of people in the region.

Running Time: 93 minutes Production Year: 2015

Iffat Fatima is an independent filmmaker from Kashmir, based in Delhi. She started making documentary films from 1990, soon after getting her masters degree in Mass Communication from Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Her documentary films include, Lanka- the other side of war and peace (2005), which focuses on the issues of memory and violence in Sri Lanka: The Kesar Saga (2000), which explores the story telling tradition in the Himalayan region of Ladakh: In the Realm of the Visual (1998), on one of India’s most prolific and versatile artist and designer Dashrath Patel: Boojh Sakey to Boojh (1996), on the contemporary understanding of the 13th century Sufi poet and scholar Amir Khusro. Her films have been screened at important venues and film festivals in India and all over the world, including Berlin, Yamagata, Salzburg, London, Dublin, San Francisco, New York and Chicago.

Her most recent work (2014) is a compendium on the writings of Khwaja Ahmed Abbas, one of India’s foremost filmmakers and writers of the 1960’s. In 2010, her video installation Ethnography of a European city: Conversations in Salzburg, which questions some of the assumptions in the east west polarity/ dichotomy /disparity traveled to Berlin, Brussels, Zagreb, Vienna and Salzburg. In 2001, she was awarded the Asia Fellowship for her work in Sri Lanka, Intercommoned Relations and Education: The Sri Lankan Experience.

Since 2006 she is working in Kashmir on the issue of Enforced Disappearances in collaboration with the Association Of Parents Of Disappeared Persons (APDP), a collective of the family members of the victims of enforced disappearances in Kashmir, campaigning for information on the whereabouts of their disappeared kin. She very recently completed her documentary Khoon Diy Baarav (Blood Leaves its Trail) which explores issues of violence and memory in Kashmir- a society ravaged by a prolonged political conflict.

History of Kakatiya Dynasty
Sun Dec 6, 4:30 PM
Durgam Ravinder
Presenting an evening of talk on 'the Culture, History and Social structure of Kakatiya Dynasty' by Durgam Ravinder.
Mr. Durgam would like to state few points on the Kakatiya rule. In these 692 years, since the curtains were down on Kakatiya dynasty as Prataparudra was arrested in 1324; so many stories have been in circulation about Kakatiyas. Though, Kakatiyas rule was not that old, much research has not been done and importance not given so far to know the true facts.
After the Telangana state is formed, as TSPSC has included Kakatiya history in the curriculum, dialogue about the Kakatiya rule is greater now than ever before.

All are welcome.

A collection of photographs made at New York City while on a photography course at Columbia University. These photographs portray human solitude and longing; undiscovered Love; and an undiscovered self on the path to finding one's own reality. The collection was made by Puranjani Kabra, with guidance and inspiration from some brilliant photographers like Thomas Roma, Inbal Abergil and Kai McBride. AAJIR
Sat Dec 12, 8:00 PM
SHUDRKA, HYDERABAD
The word ‘Aajir’ stands for one who has sold himself into slavery for a paltry sum. In the play, ‘Aajir’, the story of a slave held by a bond signed by an ancestor – a slavery that denies him the right to love, marry and live a life of a human being – discovering that the bond has long turned to dust, but discovering it only too late, is a metaphor for the traditional constraints that bind the individual in our country long after their legal authority has given way. Exploitation operates beyond the law and with the tacit acquiescence of an exploited class held in thrall by a load of conventional role – obligations. Legal reforms or legal defences for the exploited have rarely affected the exploitative mechanism sustained by the illiteracy and ignorance of the exploited. Paatan, the bonded slave, whose ancestor had sold himself, his family and his descendant to perpetual slavery, is a supreme example of the slave suffering forever in a historical perspective that goes on and on.

Mataang, the epitome of manipulation, relegates his wife to a position of inferiority and subjugation tantamounting almost to the bonded position of Paatan. Religious traditions, under the preponderant influence of Hinduism, provide the ideological basis for patriarchy and assign women an inferior role in the family and society.

I am your poet -Story of Vidrohi
Sun Dec 13, 6:00 PM
Lamakaan
Screening a film on and about poetry of Ramashankar Yadav "Vidrohi" who passed away this week in JNU, Delhi. The film is made by Nitin K Pamnani.

There is a poet on the streets of Delhi called ‘Vidrohi’ – the rebel. He roams around the old city, spouting Molotov cocktails of words. The citizen name of the ‘Vidrohi’ is Ramashankar Yadav, a raggedy old man from Sultanpur. Vidrohi is a title that has been conferred to Indian poets before, such as Kazi Najrul Islam and Damodar Swarup, but has it had such an organic development so as to overshadow the real name.

The subjects of his poems deal with universal struggle and suffering, imbued with socio-political perspectives. He uses historical places, times and names to constitute his subjects with historical relevance. There is a history behind each system of oppression and a game of constant manipulation to make people forget that history. Vidrohi’s poems fight against the politics of re-memory and re-interpretation by retelling and reconstructing the discourse of suffering.

His poems are mostly composed in Hindi. He uses everyday phrases in his poems to make them comprehensible to people from all walks of life, but even with ordinary words he creates powerful images, like a burnt corpse of a woman lying on the last step of Mohenjodaro, her corpse embodying the history of continuous exploitation and violence committed by imperialist powers all over the world. He also writes about the interconnectedness of class and gender oppression. Each of his poems deal with one powerful image around which he constructs the narrative.
Ramashankar Yadav is a people’s poet, a rebel at heart who carries on the legacy of poets like Kabir and Nagarjun. He spends most of his time around Delhi and inside Jawaharlal Nehru University’s campus. A former student of JNU, he was rusticated from the University for being part of a mass movement in the 80s. It was after this incident that he started living under the trees inside the campus. Away from his faraway home and wife, Vidrohi has chosen the life of a vagabond, roaming around with his bag full of the poetry of rebellion. There is no bitterness between his family members and himself for his chosen lifestyle of living on the streets. He lives off people’s kindness, living by the people he writes for, of which JNU students play a crucial part.

This film was to be on a poet and his poetry. It became a story of a person who lives a poem. We try to understand the person we see the poem, we try to understand the poetry; the poet comes and stands in front of us. And as we journey through the poetry and the poet, we end up with a mirror. In the mirror, a roughly-hewn life, small, innocent.... a dream-like existence, in the scrub forest, among the silent ruins, the old streets in the middle of the polis.

The poetry slowly shows us the way, and the way slowly becomes poetry Ramashankar Vidrohi has never written poetry, he speaks out poetry. He is poet of our unknown, unorganized, underground nation. He is the poet of those whose constituency is always bearing the cost of empire builders, the women, the children, and the billions who lie on the steps to the center of power structure.

Film has won International Award for Best Documentary at MIFF ( Mumbai International Documentary Festival 2011).

It is a tool that can provide an effective experiential and collaborative learning experience that encourages independent initiative and a spirit of enquiry. Nation-Sate & India -A dialectic
Sun Nov 22, 11:00 AM
Lamakaan program committee

Her films have been screened at important venues and film festivals in India and all over the world, including Berlin, Yamagata, Salzburg, London, Dublin, San Francisco, New York and Chicago.

All are welcome to this evening of tribute.
