Iara Lee, a Brazilian of Korean descent, is an activist, filmmaker, and director of the Cultures of Resistance Network. In 2010, she released her feature-length documentary entitled CULTURES OF RESISTANCE, which explores how creative action contributes to conflict prevention and resolution. As an extension of her commitment to the issues explored in the film, she also founded the Cultures of Resistance Network, an organization that promotes global solidarity, supports efforts to secure peace and social justice, and brings together artists and changemakers from around the world.
Iara has also continued to produce and direct documentary films. She just finished two new docs: K2 AND THE INVISIBLE FOOTMEN, shot in stunning northern Pakistan, it is about the plight of the unsung heroes, the indigenous porters of majestic K2, the earth’s second-highest peak. LIFE IS WAITING: Referendum and Resistance in Western Sahara, looks at 40 years of Moroccan occupation and the sahrawi nonviolent struggle for self-determination by a people for whom colonialism has never ended. In 2013, Iara made a short film entitled THE KALASHA AND THE CRESCENT, which chronicles how an indigenous movement in northern Pakistan is responding to the challenges facing their culture. In 2012, she released a documentary called THE SUFFERING GRASSES: when elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers, which examines the Syrian conflict through the humanity of the civilians who have been killed, abused, and displaced to the squalor of refugee camps.
In May 2010, Iara was a passenger on the MV Mavi Marmara, a vessel in the Gaza Freedom Flotilla which was attacked in international waters by the Israeli navy, leading to the murder of nine humanitarian aid workers. Among the many people who recorded the events on that ship, her crew was the only one to successfully hide and retain most of the raid footage, which she later released to the world after a screening at the United Nations. Iara is dedicated to the support of Palestinian civilians who have been victims of war crimes committed by the Israeli military and who suffer from the Israeli government's ongoing acts of collective punishment.
At the onset of the Iraq war in 2003, Iara decided to travel and live in the MENA region (Middle East & North Africa) in order to understand the conflict better. While residing in Lebanon in 2006, she experienced firsthand the 34-day Israeli bombardment of that country. Moved by that experience, she has since dedicated herself to the pursuit of a just peace in the region, and she is an enthusiastic supporter of those initiatives which strengthen adherence to international law in enforcing human rights. In 2008 Iara lived in Iran and supported a number of cultural exchange projects between that country and the West with the goal of promoting arts & culture for global solidarity.
From 1984 to 1989 Iara was the producer of the Sao Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil. From 1989-2003 she was based in New York City, where she ran the mixed-media company Caipirinha Productions, created to explore the synergy of different artforms (such as film, music, architecture, and poetry). Under that banner, Iara directed short and feature-length documentaries including Synthetic Pleasures, Modulations, Architettura, and Beneath the Borqa.
Iara is a member of the International Council of Advisors of the National Geographic Society, a long-time supporter of Greenpeace and Amnesty International, and many organizations around the world. Why does someone rely on the things outside their self? Either because his surroundings don’t have what that entity is giving, non-belonging or the self is void. If this is the right understanding then addicts of things can grow to become addicts of people and emotions. From emotions to enlightenment, they can move from lower to higher addictions. They can grow beyond this body and be eternal. The addiction controlling their body can be let go. Yes, so there is a possibility of existence of the Eternal Addicts. Yes it is possible.
The Play starts with this Idea and deeper understanding of Eternal addicts like the spiritual and divine souls of Yogis, the agitated and longing souls of the lovers and the analytical or logical souls of philosophers the play is set in a metaphorical world of rehabilitation. Addicts of different backgrounds and abused by substances of different kind enter a room where the voice of narrator talks to them and indulges them into a conversation of self-realization. The Souls of Yogi, Lover and Philosopher talk their heart out of how they passed through to higher addiction. And then there is a session where some addicts are still in denial and choose hell and some addicts accept and rehabilitate to live a life of heaven. A simple metaphoric series of monologues and amalgamation of sequences will let us see deeper into different lives.

One of Vijay Tendulkar's most controversial plays, this play vividly captures the strange and complex pathology of Sakharam, who while on one hand, wants to please his women, on the other hand, bullies them as well. He is, in one moment, a freethinking crusader for women’s rights and the very next moment sees him as a philistine- scornful of their devotion to him.
He strongly believes in exploiting the corrupt system for his own gain but realizes too late the price of playing the game.

Half-Chicken
The play “Half-Chicken” is about a chicken hatched with only half a body, one leg, one wing, one eye, and only half as many feathers as the other chicks. She becomes the centre of attention at the ranch where she is born, because the animals consider her very special and unique. With her uniqueness, she is propagated as half chicken Baba. Half-Chicken Baba becomes vain because of this attention and decides to leave the ranch to visit the king Sri Krishnadevaraya. On her journey she meets people who are in need of help but she does not help them. What happens to Half-Chicken as a result of this is what we will know from this delightful short play.
Pinocchio- The robot
This play is devised from a play Pinocchio 3.5 which was written by Eric Cobel. Gill Bates is a computer magnate. He has a Software Company, billions of dollars, power but something is missing from his life: children. So he builds a little robot named Pinocchio. The present play is about Pinocchio who gets diverted easily from others.

What is it that makes us human? Is it that we love, that we fight ? That we laugh ? Cry ? Our curiosity ? The quest for discovery ?
Driven by these questions, filmmaker and artist Yann Arthus-Bertrand spent three years collecting real-life stories from 2,000 women and men in 60 countries. Working with a dedicated team of translators, journalists and cameramen, Yann captures deeply personal and emotional accounts of topics that unite us all; struggles with poverty, war, homophobia, and the future of our planet mixed with moments of love and happiness.

While listening to Sufi music and Qawwali becomes more and more trendy, there are debates on what the true Sufi music is. Is it some meditative chanting that provides peace and tranquility to an individual in today’s stressful urban life? Is it supposed to involve a lot of rhythm and high octave vocals using the names of god or Ali, as often exhibited by contemporary Indian cinema or pop music groups? Or is there something more to Sufi music and literature than mere self-indulgence? Does it have a social relevance in today’s life? Could it help us connect to our pluralistic past? Or could it help us learn ways to coexist in today’s multicultural society? These are some of the questions that we hope to address in an intensive short workshop involving music practitioners and media professionals who have been researching or practicing these themes since many years.
The workshop will include an informal lecture-interaction, poetry recitations, screening of audio/video clips as well as documentary films. The main presenter of the workshop is Delhi-based author and filmmaker Yousuf Saeed, who along with his team has been successfully conducting such workshops for last couple of years, the details of which can be seen on www.ektara.org. Kindly register in advance for participation.
What to expect and who can attend:
This workshop is open for anyone interested in learning to appreciate Sufi poetry, music and Qawwali better. The participants do not have to have a prior knowledge or training of music, nor is there an age-bar. The participants do not have to be Sufis or belonging to any particular religion or community. Anyone with an interest in music, literature and cultural history can enroll in this workshop. Most presentations will be given in English with some Urdu/Hindi content. Kindly note that this is not a course for learning music, but is meant to learn appreciating music, poetry and their social contexts. Although 4 hours are not sufficient for a comprehensive understanding of such a subject, it is hoped that by the end of the workshop, the participants would be able to better appreciate the nuances of Sufi music, poetry, and Qawwali and its historical context. We wish to keep this half-day completely informal, friendly and homely. You are free to ask questions and raise doubts whenever you wish. The workshop would include a midway break for tea. Registered participants will get reading and listening material (in digital format).

In today’s India where the corporate media focuses only on big cities and urban glitz, Qasba Sanskriti, a short series of documentary films, travels to some historic qasbas or small towns in Uttar Pradesh which continue to carry the age-old traditions of sycretic culture and shared living between people of different religions and sects.
Director: Yousuf Saeed- Nawed Akhter Duration: 40 mins
This documentary explores the material culture, performative arts and crafts of Amroha, a small town near Delhi in north India, especially focusing on the evolution of Islamic and syncretic cultural values and interdependence between different communities and sects of people, through their arts, crafts, religious rituals and iconography. Amroha is not only famous for its handicrafts such as woodwork, handlooms, embroidery, and percussion instruments, but also for being a centre for the production of Urdu literature, poetry and music. The story of Amroha’s communal harmony is told in the film in the voices of its Hindu and Muslim residents.
This film is a cultural sketch of Bilgram, a small town near Lucknow in north India, especially focusing on the performative arts associated with the Shia rituals of Ashura on Muharram. For many centuries Bilgram has been a rich centre of refined culture and literature, producing several scholars, poets as well as administrators for the historic province of Awadh and beyond. The film also looks at the syncretic or plural values ingrained in the daily lives of the people of Bilgram, where the Muharram is commemorated by Shias, Sunnis and Hindus with equal passion, using local iconography and plural symbols.

With given name Syed Abdullah Shah Qadri, Bulleh Shah was a poet, humanist and philosopher who practiced the Sufi tradition of Punjabi poetry.
The verse form Bulleh Shah primarily employed is the Kafi, popular in Punjabi, Sindhi and Saraiki poetry.
Bulleh Shah's writings represent him as a humanist, someone providing solutions to the sociological problems of the world around him as he lives through it, describing the turbulence his motherland of Punjab is passing through, while concurrently searching for God. His poetry highlights his mystical spiritual voyage through the four stages of Sufism: Shariat (Path), Tariqat (Observance), Haqiqat (Truth) and Marfat (Union). The simplicity with which Bulleh Shah has been able to address the complex fundamental issues of life and humanity is a large part of his appeal.
Many people have put his kafis to music, from humble street-singers to renowned Sufi singers like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Pathanay Khan, Abida Parveen, the Waddali Brothers, Sain Zahoor and band Junoon.
Bulleh Shah's verses have been an inspiration to painters as well like Geeta Vadhera.
All are welcome to this evening of Sufism.
