A medley of 32 short and very short stories based on the events that took place during partition. The stories illustrate the heinous and mercenary stupidity to which human beings can stoop when they get a chance. The shortness of the stories creates the impression that we are entering a war zone i.e Black Borders or Siyaah Haashiye. Presented partly in narrative and partly as a combination of narrative and performance, Siyaah Haashiye transports us to the morbid world of loot, killing and rape being committed in the name of religion.

Shubhashree is an exponent in classical Indian dance forms of Odissi, Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam, Subhashree will be performing Odissi depicting Nabarasa, Dasavatar, Dasmahavidya.
With extensive training under the leading Gurus of Odissi, Subhahsree is today recognized for her artistry, technique, eloquence and characteristic energy that mark every performance. Her solo performances and group ensembles, in Odissi, Kuchipudi as well as Bharatanatyam have received critical acclaim at leading festivals all over the world. Her desire to dance and create dance was born out of an atmosphere of freedom, an ambiance in which ideas and imaginations were encouraged to flow and flower.
The second dancer Sanjukta Ghosh is a professionally qualified architect, she has trained in Odissi from Guru Sharmila Biswas.
She will perform some pure dance items and excerpts from Krishna Leela, a recurring theme in Odissi dance. She will perform Shankaravaranam Pallavi, a pure dance item, followed by Nachanti Range, a Krishna Tandav, and an abhinaya - Kede Chhanda Janilo Sahi.
About ODISSI dance:
Odissi is one of the seven major classical dance styles in India. It is also the oldest recorded, with stone carvings of court dancers dating back to the 2nd century caves of Orissa. It survived as a temple dance form for centuries with maidens called "Mahari" dedicated to the service of the god. Within the community, young boys known as "gotipua" dressed as women also performed a variation of the dance. In the British era, with the devadasi system being abolished, the dance form almost disappeared. Post independence, legendary gurus most of them once young gotipuas themselves, helped revive this lost form and added nuances to it from the profuse carvings on ancient temples.
Today much refined, this dance is best known for its soft feminine and exquisite postures and lyrical movements that mesmerize and captivate audiences.

A Story can be found in every lifeless object too as a life would have definitely touched it somewhere somehow. And if the lifeless objects are those entrances and exits we pass through or peek through daily, then for sure they would have stories attached to their existence. Such are the stories which are always connected to houses, doors or just the windows. Some say the houses are haunted by the inhabitants, some say the doors narrates a person’s life who has passed through it and hence is our play based on the miniature of these objects, A Window.
A Window is at a position where most passersby can peek into and the inhabitants peek out. Those are the passages of connection and sometimes the expressions exchanged. Hence a story shaped out of a window for our writer, Nuzhath M Syed, he tried connecting the dots which most of the windows had given him. The most common or nearest to reality he got after connecting the dots was, “The Woman at the Window.”
Nuzhath, the writer presents his writing through his own vision and narration.He passing by a window for his regular affair finds an expressionless face on the Window. That face attracts him for why it lacked any expression. After regularly seeing that face at the Window, Nuzhath one day finds courage to ask the person who kept visiting the house often the story of that face. The Play goes into the life of an expressive woman from there on, who was a painter and something rigorous and drastic happens in her life that all her expressions are lost and gone. The Play puts in front of you some very minute understandings of patriarchy and woman’s surrender.
Group Introduction:
Maditorium, A Group founded by Nuzhath M Syed in January 2015, for his creative expressions through the medium of theatre and films brings to you their second play. The First one was a Satirical Drama on the Muslim Society and Life of Woman in a Muslim society called “Manhus Kaun”, written and presented by Nuzhath M Syed for SAFA INDIA, an NGO based in Hyderabad holding the Moto –“Educate a Girl, Empower a family.”

The next Sawaal-Jawaab: Conversations on Science features Prof. Sanjay Sane of the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, speaking about the wonders and puzzles of insect flight. Insects are evolution's great success story. They are everywhere, and seemingly in invincible numbers. How did insects get to be so numerous? One commonly held idea is that the evolution of flight enabled insects to become masters of the aerial niche, and gain substantial advantage over their prey and predators, as well as occupy far-flung ecological niches which were out of the reach of other animals. In this world view, flight holds a central place and for good reasons, but it is almost easy to overlook that flying is a difficult task for animals which are small, because small size demands faster wing motion to stay aloft . How do insects fly given the constraints of size? This is the focus of this conversation.
We will have a short 20 minute talk by our guest scientist, during and after which the audience is invited to engage in an informal, free-flowing discussion with the speaker. Interested participants of all ages are welcome. No prior knowledge or expertise is required.
The presentation: The talk will focus on Nandini Oza’s work of collection of oral histories of the people who have played a significant role in the struggle against the Sardar Sarovar project (SSP). It will highlight the reasons and importance behind collecting such histories, the process of its collection, its strengths and limitations and the work of dissemination of the material collected and future plans. The presentation highlights why the history of the struggle would be grossly incomplete without these voices and why oral history is an appropriate medium of chronicling the history of such a movement.
It will also include brief clippings from the recordings as well as some glimpses of the journey of the Narmada valley, its people and the struggle.
The talk will conclude with a session on questions and answers.
The Oral History Work: The oral histories consist of extensive interviews in audio format of around 80 leaders and activists of the struggle that began in the year 1961 when the foundation stone of the project was laid by India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and continues till date for over half a century now. The oral history is a total of over 400 hours of recordings in digital format, in seven different dialects and languages- Hindi, Marathi, English, Gujarati, Pawari, Bhilali and Nimadi.
Though the Narmada struggle has been a very well known movement, what conventional history - and the mass media - has recorded is either the issues, or prominent programs or the role of only a few well known activists. It is primarily because of the collective power of the people in the Narmada valley that the struggle against SSP has blossomed and sustained for so long. And yet, the role, the contribution and the vision of the local leaders, activists and the common people, particularly women and tribal leaders and activists who have formed the backbone of the struggle find little place in the documentation of the struggle. One of the objectives of this oral history is to attempt to address this gap.
Another issue is that the Narmada struggle is seen mainly as the NBA, a well-organized movement spread over the entire project affected area that began around the mid-1980s. While this is certainly true, what is not known well is that the earliest resistance against the project dates to 1961 when the foundation stone of the project was laid. From then onwards the Narmada valley has seen a series of protests and movements against the project, some spontaneous and unorganized, others more structured and organized. These struggles prepared the ground for the emergence of the subsequent struggle in the form of the NBA. These oral histories trace the earlier resistance against the project and its history.
The oral histories address these limitations by recording the experiences of those whose roles/experiences have not been documented so far. In doing these recordings, Nandini has been able to bring in her own experience as a full time activist of the NBA for over twelve years and another eight as the resident of the Narmada valley to weave together narratives of the hitherto less known histories of a struggle that has been going on for over half a century now.
About Nandini Oza: After completing MSW, Nandini worked in an NGO involved in soil and water conservation. Subsequently she was a full time activist with NBA where she lived and worked among the people affected by the SSP. Her main responsibility was mobilization of the people to strengthen the NBA as well as to help coordinate programs, rallies, demonstrations, mass actions, fund raising programs and campaigns. As part of NBA, she was involved in extensive research, documentation and dissemination of information regarding several aspects of the project and its impacts both within the valley and outside. She has represented NBA nationally as well as internationally. Later, along with teaching in the Government college in Badwani, she took up the task of recording the oral history of those involved in the NBA, particularly the tribal people and the farmers affected by the SSP. Currently she is processing the recorded history for dissemination. Author of the book- ‘Whither Justice- Stories of Women in Prison’, Published by Rupa and Co, she is an independent researcher and writer. She is also a part of the Zindabad trust.

About the Author
Mahasweta Devi (b. 1926) is one of India's leading writers. She has won the country's most prestigious literary prizes for her writing including the Jnanpith Award, and the Padmashree Award for her activist work among the tribal communities of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. She writes novels, short fiction, and plays, in Bengali, and has made a mark in all three genres. She re-creates a span of history, imbuing her narration with trenchant satire against establishment and soul-stirring poignancy for the underprivileged.

The play portrays a rural dramatic troupe back in the British rule in India staging a political satire entitled Ghantakaner Pala before a rustic audience of Putna, an imaginary village. The poor and naïve Ghantakarna who, losing his job to the quirks of the trickster Bhaanr, is getting employed under the Raja as the ‘shajakheko officer’ as his only throwback—- the self-proclaimed criminal of the crimes committed in Putna. The Raja conveniently appoints Ghantakarna for this task in order to win his political battle against Laatshaheb who shamelessly jockeys for political power and openly defies the Raja’s political maneuvers. Ghantakarna and his wife, Jagadamba enjoy the financial comforts offered by this employment. Despite the initial turmoil within her conscience, Jagadamba’s lust for wealth prevails and she lets the innocent Ghantakarna accept death sentence given by Laatshaheb to the trusted Minister of the Raja for abusing a woman– a feat that enables Jagadamba rise to the position of the queen. However, this time Ghantakarna not only refuses to shoulder the responsibility of the King’s crime but himself is going to commit the crime of murdering the King, Minister and Laatshaheb, the three arch representatives of the inhuman system. At this juncture, enters a policeman, ordered by the politically powerful men from the real world, and disallows the complete performance of Ghantakarner Pala. The masterstroke of Manoj Mitra’s satiric vision cannot be missed here for this intrusion reflects with more immediacy the dehumanization at work eating into the ugly political fabric of colonial India. And though Manoj Mitra’s play is set in a time different from ours, we feel its contemporary relevance.
About the author
An actor par excellence, Manoj Mitra (b. 1938) formed his theatre group ‘Sundaram’ way back in 1957 and has acted in, directed, organised and written many plays over the years. His works have been translated into many languages and produced by countless directors like Ratan Thiyam and Rajendar Nath. He is the recipient of many awards in the field of theatre including the Sangeet Natak Akademy Award for Best Playwright.

"Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai"
In September, 2013, Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts of Western Uttar Pradesh, India, witnessed their worst ever anti-Muslim pogrom since Indian Independence. More than 100 people were killed and close to 80,000 people were displaced.
In the past, the two districts have seen relative harmony between Muslims and Hindus. What happened this time? ‘Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai…’ (Muzaffarnagar eventually…) explores this question examining the many facets of the massacre- the question of women’s ‘honour’, which was used by organisations of the Hindu right, including BJP-RSS, to orchestrate communal violence, the merging of caste identity politics within the larger Hindutva fold, the breakdown of the once powerful farmers’ union, the Bhartiya Kissan Union, whose survival hinged on the unity of Hindu and Muslim peasants, the various aspects of Dalit politics in the districts, the dubious role of the Samajwadi Party, the ruling party in Uttar Pradesh and the feeling of complete alienation and marginalisation of the Muslim community. The film looks at how the massacre found its resonance in the 2014 Indian General election campaign. Finally, it tells of the continued and growing resistance in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts against the corporate- communal nexus.

Group Captain GJ Rao is the Command Education Officer and PRO at Head Quarters Maintenance Command, Nagpur. In the year 2014, in addition to his primary job, he has under taken a first of its kind project in the Indian Air Force (IAF) where he has identified, counselled and motivated 70 under privileged personnel from Air Force campus to provide them with sustainable means of lively hood by organising free training in ITI and MHRD recognised Computer Institute.
He also reached out to people in distress and saving precious lives through his Suicide Prevention Model in IAF and for transforming Air Force Schools in to Centres of Excellence.
The salient aspects of his project include:-
a) Cost effective and immediate utilisation of the existing 104 as the 24x7 toll free Suicide Prevention Counselling Centre.
b) Establishing Central Locking Storage System for storing pesticides to avoid the access to the means of committing suicide.
c) Sensitize the entire population of the State about identifying the symptoms of suicidal behaviour and equip the individuals with simple techniques of helping them in overcoming these suicidal behaviour.
d) Mass publicity by the message of honourable CM through TV, radio, Banners and pamphlets on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day.

In July, 2014, UGC had issued a circular asking all varsities to include transgenders in different fellowship/scholarship schemes. According to the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Vijay Sampla, in all the application forms of the universities under University Grants Commission (UGC), there now has to be a column for transgender community students. However, this has yet to be implemented in many universities including University of Hyderabad and we wish to hereby begin a campaign for the same.

About the actors
Gee Imaan Semmalar is a savarna trans activist from Kerala. He holds a BA (Hons) in English Literature from Lady Shri Ram College and an MA in Arts and Aesthetics from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has written, directed and acted in a multilingual, docu-fiction film on transmen titled 'Kalvettukal' which has been screened in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Madurai, Kerala and Sweden. He has been writing about trans issues for several leading newspapers in India including DNA, Bombay and New Indian Express, Chennai. He lives in Bangalore and was a radio host for a show on 'Q radio', an online LGBT radio channel. He has worked on building alliances with several movements over the years and believes that anti caste gender activism is crucial for actualising any revolutionary social change.
Living Smile Vidya is a dalit transwoman, theatre actor, writer, poet and artist from Trichy, Tamil Nadu. She holds a Masters degree in Linguistics. Smiley received the Charles Wallace Award in 2013 for her excellence in Theatre. She has staged more than 100 shows of 20 plays with 9 eminent theatre directors. She is the author of I am Vidya which is the first transgender autobiography to be published in India. It has been translated into over 6 other indian languages and is part of the syllabus of B.A. English in Stella Maris College, Chennai, India. Her essays and poems are published in magazines in many commercial magazines, literary magazines and online magazines. As a self-taught artist, she started drawing since 2010. She has done five exhibitions in Chennai, Bangalore and Delhi. She also has experience in Tamil cinema industry and has been Assistant Director, Associate Director and actor in Tamil and Malayalam films.
Angel Glady is a Bahujan trans woman from Tamil Nadu. She has studied M.A. mass communication in University of Madras. She is a theatre actor and has worked with french clowns from "clowns without border" and a South Korean theatre group called "TUIDA". She feels art is the best tool to make a revolution and is co-founder of a trans theatre group called Panmai theatre in Chennai.

Journeys with Kumar and Kabir" a film by Shabnam Virmani.
This film is an interweaving the folk music traditions of the mystic poet Kabir with the life and music of the late classical singer Kumar Gandharva, this film searches for that elusive sound, that jhini si awaaz, Kabir urges us to hear. Where does it resonate, that subtle sound? Journeying between folk and classical, oral and written, rural and urban expressions of this 15th century mystic poet of north India, the film finds moments of both continuity and rupture between these disparate worlds.

About the filmmaker:
Shabnam Virmani, is a documentary film maker and artist. Co-founder of the Drishti Media Arts and Human Rights collective, she has directed several documentaries, some of which have won awards. In 2002, she co-directed an award-winning community radio program with the Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan in Gujarat.
Kabira Khada Bazaar Mein, a documentary film by Shabnam Virmani on the poet-saint as part of her Kabir Project, has won the Special Jury Prize at the 58th National Awards, June 2011.
She was conferred this award for, "An insightful film that introduces us to the various cults that have grown around Kabir, the mystic weaver and saint. It explores the nuances of India's argumentative tradition as exemplified by Kabir's dohas and traces the eventful journey of one man caught in an Orwellian dilemma as he is elevated to the status of a cult leader, torn between the inevitable trappings of hierarchy that run paradoxical to the simple philosophy of Kabir"

They will present folk songs from Malwa (Madhya Pradesh), Rajasthan, Kutch (Gujarat), and a few from the Baul and classical traditions, which speak with startling clarity, and yet with great feeling, about the fundamental truths of human life, in the voices of Kabir and other Bhakti poets such as Gorakhnath, Dharamdas, Brahmanand, Meera and others.
