Critical Thinking -An Open House
Fri Jul 17, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan Lecture Series
Inviting all for a Two-Day workshop on 'Critical Reasoning' by Biju Mathew.
- The real world is messy and unpredictable.
- Most people knew before the general elections that the BJP would win.

The two statements above both have a ring of truth. And yet they are also contradictory. Unlike the world of Newtonian physics or mathematical abstraction the social world we inhabit is not easy analyzed through the positivist methods of science. The social world is multi layered and analyzable only through an entirely different set of methodologies - methods that seek to uncover the deeper causal structures of real world phenomenon. This two days workshop is aimed at making visible some of the techniques involved in rigorous social analysis - why we might broadly encompass under the rubric of critical Reasoning.

Biju Mathew, our speaker tonight, is a Secretary of the National Taxi Workers Alliance in the USA, a Marxist researcher of labor process and migration and a Professor of Business.
He is an associate professor of Information Systems and American studies at Rider University (New Jersey). Biju is also the co-Founder of Lamakaan.

Greece Crisis: Lessons learn
Tue Jul 28, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan Lecture Series
An evening of discussion on'The Lesson to be Learnt with the current Greece Economic Crisis'.

Joining us for a discussion are Dr.Partha Banerjee is a labor educator and human rights activist based in New York.

He will speak about the neoliberal economic policies that are silently colonizing the world, in the name of development and prosperity.

A brief by the guest speaker:

"IMF and ARISTOTLE -- When I speak to my labor union students about Greece and IMF, or "illegal" immigration and IMF, or massive unemployment and IMF, or tax cuts for the wealthy and IMF...etc... many ask what exactly is IMF? Nobody ever heard about IMF, because you never hear anything about it on mainstream media. They have kept it a closely-guarded secret. But now that Greece has stood up against IMF, World Bank, and G-8, Wall Street is angry. And Corporate media is manufacturing public consent to punish Greece. And because of this, some people are hearing the word IMF for the first time, even though they still don't know what they do, or how they do it. They don't know how IMF and World Bank work as a global credit card scam: loans you can NEVER pay back, and you're in debt, FOREVER. Your life is doomed, and your children's lives are doomed. Media and big political parties are creating mass hysteria that Greece will crash the world economy, and it's Greece's fault. Just the same way New York Times and CNN manufactured WMD consent to punish Iraq; they said it was Iraq's fault. They destroyed millions of Iraqis. Now they will destroy millions of Greeks. (I also heard Greece now has 50% unemployment. Soon, it will be 60 or 70%. And there will be new violence and bloodshed in the land of Socrates, Archimedes, Aristotle and Plato".

All are welcome to this evening of Open discussion.

Date and Time: Wednesday, 29th July, 2014 at 2 pm

The Brief:
The Secunderabad Club, as per their Rules, is a Social, Sports and Cultural Club where men and women are both entitled to be members. It is not a ‘gentlemen’s club’ where only men are members. However gender discrimination and gender oppression is practiced under the aegis of the Rules themselves by the Secunderabad Club.

The Rules of the Club impose disabilities on women of two kinds, (i) right of self governance through franchise/Voting and (ii) marriage/remarriage disentitles women to continued membership of Club. However, the men in the Club enjoy the rights of franchise and freedom to marry/remarry without any restrictions

Women (Associate Member Ladies (AML) members) are entitled to membership in the same way as their brothers are, both enter membership as progeny of Permanent Members of the Club and pay the same admission fee.

AML (women) members are prevented from exercising their rights of franchise/ suffrage. Under Rule 17 of the Club, only men have these rights of franchise. AML (Women) members are not permitted to
(i) exercise their vote, choose their representatives and be part of the governance process
(ii) contest for elections and participate in self governance
(iii) nominate names for managing committee or other memberships
(iv) make proposals to the General Body to amend the Rules or bring about changes in the Club
(v) their children are disentitled from membership solely because the parent/member is a woman. Children of male members have a right of membership.
(vi) not permitted to be members of the General Body of the Society. Only men can be permanent members and move resolutions and take decisions on issues governing all the members, including women and children.
(vii) Their spouses and children lose membership on the death of an AML member only because she is a woman while the family of a Permanent Member continues the membership even on the death of the permanent member.

Women of all categories (AML / Lady / Associate or Spousal) are sought to be prevented from marrying or remarrying.
(i) Rules restrain Widows /spousal members from remarrying (Rule VII(3))
(ii) Rules restrain Lady members (single / divorced / separated from remarrying (Rule VII)

(Then the history of this fight, etc. and the final call for action below)

Film &Talk by Filmmaker Amarnath
Fri Jul 31, 6:00 PM
Cinema Talk @ Lamakaan
Lamakaan invites you to

Cinema Talk with filmmaker S Amarnath

followed by the screening of ‘Documenting Reality by Ranu Sharma’

Objective of this evening in the words of the filmmaker:

"Is it possible to engage a thought keeping fiction and non-fiction films on the same plane and explore

how we 'see' them?"

"In a place like Hyderabad, overpowered by 300-crore club mainstream 'films’, talking about no-returns-

promised documentary films is surely interesting and challenging; more so in a place like Lamakaan, with

such a diverse audience/ crowd hopping in and out. Given this backdrop, it is only natural to have

narrow popular notions about a documentary when you position it as another ‘film’.

After all it doesn’t have that money or stars; they don’t show in the theaters; they don’t ‘seem’ to have

any entertainment; they are too complicated to engage with; they show poverty, issues, problems and

what not! These are only a few but there are loads of other interesting popular notions we get to hear

only to make a Documentary film more complicated, inaccessible and one that’s boring. It’s an irony that

the history of Cinema starts with documentary film and today we ‘perceive’ it as ‘second cousin’ to the

mainstream fiction.

Being a film buff myself I have had my own journey of growing through these popular notions and

realizing how fun, empowering, adventurous and expressive documentary films can be. And took it up as

a career for the sheer excitement it promised. Through this talk I want to explore all the impressions/

ideas/ notions/ perceptions we as filmmakers/ audiences carry about documentary films and share my

own excitement about them as a practitioner leading to a collective realization of ‘ways of looking at

documentary films.'"

About the film being screened:

Documenting Reality

by Ranu Sharma

30 min, English, India

As an extension to his talk/ conversation, Amar will show ‘Documenting Reality by Ranu Sharma’ that

ponders over the ideas of reality, Point-of-view, politics and why we document things. The film explores

the ‘constructedness’ of reality and the processes behind establishing it in documentary films and delves

into how ‘truths’ are created. This film triggers a lot of questions about ‘ways of looking’ at audio-visual

materials produced around us in general and the people behind it.

About the speaker:

S Amarnath is an independent filmmaker from Hyderabad. He is an alumnus of Sri Aurobindo Centre for

Arts and Communication (SACAC), Delhi, and has been a film practitioner for the last 7 years. Extending

his association with SACAC, he worked as Course Co-ordinator, visiting faculty and screenings organizer

at their Twilight Film Club. He has catalogued about 1000 films for JDCA Film Forum, Delhi, for their film

archive and co-ordinated their annual film festival on Art & Artists in 2008 in Bhubaneswar.

His last film, Mana Kaloji, has had various screenings in Telangana, including the Hyderabad Literary

Festival in January 2015.

Surprise film screening:

After collectively consolidating all ideas around 'reality' the evening closes with a surprise film. This film

tries to further evoke ideas around 'truths' for you to sleep over with before you leave the venue.

You gotta stick around till the end to watch it coz it promises to be fun!

Inklinkelements -A 2 Day Exhibit
Sat Aug 1, 11:00 AM
Bhargavi Madhiraju
Showcase by Inklinkelements, an art blogger for 2 Days 10am - 6pm on Sat- Sun 1st and 2nd August.

A self taught artist, Bhargavi has been doodling and creating pen and ink work from the last four years. It has to just be a new place, person, event, restaurant, patterns or surroundings – for the artist to fish out her sketch book to capture the essence of that moment. Not to mention casual conversations, interesting travel journeys or even just something at home which inspires her to sketch. With Mrs. Nature being her inspiration, with the bird as the messenger of emotion. She took up doodling and pen and ink work 3 years back – mostly as a pastime during weekends or simply as a stressbuster! She started dabbing herself in pen+colour+ ink work through paintings for her friends – as an effort to capture their existence. More colours seeped through her palette and inklinkelements was born. She just inks and links elements!

This showcase would be exhibiting the works done till now and the audience would also be able to glance through her sketchbooks.

All are welcome.

Is Kambakht Sathe Ka Kya Karen
Sun Aug 2, 8:00 PM
UDAAN Performing Arts.
Is Kambakht Sathe Ka Kya Karen is an adaptation of the Marathi play, Sathecha Kay Karaycha, penned by the noted playwright Rajiv Naik and translated into Hindi by Jyoti Subhash.

The story focuses on the tender relationship between a husband and a wife. It tells us about the happily married life of a couple - Abhay, an ad filmmaker and Salma, a lecturer in college. Each of them face different tribulations in their professional lives, but Abhay takes his troubles far too seriously. He is of the opinion that his colleague Sathe does not deserve the recognition he gets. On the other hand, Salma loves her work and does not care about quick promotion and success. She believes that everything should be done with a pure heart. At a peak point, Salma deals with the situation and handles Abhay's frustration. At the end of the play, both build a strong trust in the relationship and create a companionship that surpasses understanding. The twists and turns and the tribulations the couple faces in balancing their married and professional lives form the rest of the story. This play tries to depict that a positive attitude can make things better.

Living History : Heritage of Hyd
Fri Aug 7, 7:00 PM
Hyderabad Trails
This talk showcases through an audiovisual medium the sorry state that Hyderabad’s great cultural heritage has fallen into: its historic architecture is crumbling (if not being actively torn down), and its art treasures are falling to pieces, through a lethal combination of carelessness and callousness. As Dalrymple pointed out on a recent visit, it’s tragic that while cities like Jaipur and Jodhpur have done such a great job of conserving their heritage, in Hyderabad – which had so much more to offer – nobody really gives a damn.

Sutradhar's SIYAAH HAASHIYE
Fri Aug 14, 8:00 PM
Sutradhar
Sutradhar presents SIYAAH HAASHIYE written by Sa'adat Hasan Manto and directed by Deepti Girotra and Vinay Varma.

A medley of 32 short and very short stories based on the events that took place during partition. The stories illustrate the heinous and mercenary stupidity to which human beings can stoop when they get a chance. The shortness of the stories creates the impression that we are entering a war zone i.e Black Borders or Siyaah Haashiye.
Presented partly in narrative and partly as a combination of narrative and performance, Siyaah Haashiye transports us to the morbid world of loot, killing and rape being committed in the name of religion.

Annual lecture by BharatPatankar
Sat Aug 15, 6:30 PM
Lamakaan Lecture Series
Lamakaan invites all for a second Hasan Memorial Lecture by a leading political activist Bharat Patankar on the topic titled 'Bol, ke Lab Azaad Hain Tere: 'Cultural Freedom Curtailed'

Mr. Patankar will be delivering this lecture on the increasing intolerance by the state on cultural and political activists and institutions in India.

Bharat Patankar is an activist intellectual who has worked for almost 40 years in movements of workers, farmers, dam evictees, agricultural laborers, the drought eradication movement, alternative cultural movement, women’s liberation movement, anti-SEZ and coal-based power plant movement based on alternative energy proposals, rights of farmers on windmills, and radical anti-caste movements.

Lamakaan's Annual Hasan Memorial Lecture is mooted to engage in the current political scenario and question its deviations.

Prof Moyed Hasan in whose memory the annual lecture is named, was a scientist, a photographer, an environmentalist and a person with deep concern for the lives of ordinary people. His house, that he named Lamakaan (as in the Sufi literary tradition to mean 'an abode for those who travel without any worldly possessions') has now become an important part of Hyderabad’s cultural and political life. The once-in-a-year lecture is dedicated to foregrounding the most important political questions of our contemporary moment. Prof Hasan left behind an imaginary of what an engaged life is. From science to art, and environment to international affairs he encompassed a vision of how we must live our lives meaningfully. There is no better way to memorialize such a life than to bring it into play the liberal activists.

All are welcome to this evening's talk.

Invitation to Press Meet
Wed Jul 29, 2:00 PM
Anjana Anukriti Taggarse
Friends from Media are invited to cover "Press Conference on Gender Discrimination and Oppression in Secunderabad Club, city’s oldest 137 year old Club".

Venue: Lamakaan, in lane adjacent VengalaRao Park, Road no.5, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.
Date and Time: Wednesday, 29th July, 2014 at 2 pm

Contact person: Anjana Anukriti Taggarse
Contact number: +91 98485 12997

Thanks so much! Anjana

Lets meet to discus the possibility of losing one of them; The Osmania General Hospital.
