Learning?Yes.Education?No Thanks
Sun Jun 28, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan Lecture Series
Learning? Yes, of Course. Education? No Thanks"
A talk by Amit Deshwal.

Lecture followed Q & A and discussion

About the topic:

Every child and every culture is unique. If we wish to retain this uniqueness in the children, we need to treat them with love, respect them as unique individuals, give them time and space, help them see the world through their own eyes and support them where they seek help to find their own meaning of life. In his talk, Amit Deshwal wishes to explore how the present education system is adversely affecting the diversity of life and uniqueness of being.

Brief note about Amit Deshwal:

Amit Deshwal graduated from IIT Madras in 2008 and joined the private equity arm of World Bank. Inspired by Tagore's and Tolstoy's thoughts on education, he quit his job a year later to start a learning space for children. He spent nearly three years travelling around the country learning from different spaces that were trying to understand meaning of education beyond formal schooling and volunteering there for his sustenance. These three years that he spent both in solitude and living with diverse communities were the ones, he believes, when his real education began. He spent his last three years working with a small alternative learning space in Hyderabad called Centre for Learning. While his quest continues, he now spends time working with a group of children who chose not to follow the regular schooling pattern. You could read more about his learnings and his thoughts here at earthisnotround.wordpress.com.

Aakali Rajyam - Film screening
Wed Jul 1, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan program committee
Inviting all for a five day "CounterCulture Film Festival" at Lamakaan. As a part of this, there will be screenings of films that have shown 'a way of life and set of attitudes opposed to or at variance with the prevailing social norm'.

Today's screening is a Telugu masterpiece 'Aakali Rajyam" that showcased the agonising 80s with India at cross roads - to chose between Tradition Vs Progression.

An amazing movie from an amazing director K. Balachander. His characterisation of an unemployed, multilingual, straight-forward, honest and a sincere person in the shallow, twisted world based on favoritism and "corporateised" world has been played to perfection by kamal Hasan. His recitation of SriSri's lines and their timing couldn't have been better tribute to the socialist poet. This is a tribute to doyens like Director KB, writer Ganesh Patro, Poet Sri Sri. MS Viswanathan, Acharya Athreya and thespian Kamal himself and other Techinicians.

Aakali Rajyam dwells on the premises of social satire and through its characters, critically analyzes the state of Indian polity and social situation.

Deven (Om Puri), a teacher who loves Urdu poetry, is asked by a local newspaper editor to interview poet Nur (Shashi Kapoor) Shahjehanabadi, an aging whale of a man. Deven goes to Bhopal from Mirpur to meet Nur, of whom he is in awe. He finds him living with feuding wives, visited by sycophants who drink his whisky, eat his food and use his hospitality. Deven wants to record Nur for posterity against many odds.
These include seeking funds to buy an aged tape recorder, to bribing Safiya, the elder wife of the poet, to get Nur into a room at a brothel for a week for the recording, and of course feeding Nur's many pals who show up from time to time. Nur's beautiful second wife, Imtiaz, too wants to be taken seriously as a poetess. Dever dismisses her. In the process, our Dev succeeds in ignoring his own wife and child much as Nur does.

Troublemaking duo Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno, posing as their industrious alter-egos, expose the people profiting from Hurricane Katrina, the faces behind the environmental disaster in Bhopal, and other shocking events.

Inviting all for a five day "CounterCulture Film Festival" at Lamakaan from Wed-Sun 1-5 July. As a part of this, there will be screenings of films that have shown 'a way of life and set of attitudes opposed to or at variance with the prevailing social norm'.

This day's screening is a documentary "The Yes Men Fix the World" by Andy Bichlbaum, Mike Bonanno and Kurt Engfehr.

The Yes Men are a culture jamming activist duo and network of supporters created by Jacques Servin and Igor Vamos. Through actions of tactical media, the Yes Men primarily aim to raise awareness about what they consider problematic social issues. To date, the duo has produced three films: The Yes Men (2003), The Yes Men Fix the World (2009) and The Yes Men Are Revolting (2014). In these films, they impersonate entities that they dislike, a practice that they call "identity correction". The Yes Men operate under the mission statement that lies can expose truth. They create and maintain fake websites similar to ones they intend to spoof, which have led to numerous interview, conference, and TV talk show invitations. They espouse the belief that corporations and governmental organizations often act in dehumanizing ways toward the public.

Creation - An Eng film screening
Sun Jul 5, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan program committee
Creation is a 2009 British biographical drama film about Charles Darwin's relationship with his wife Emma and his memory of their eldest daughter Annie, as he struggles to write On the Origin of Species. The film, directed by Jon Amiel and starring real life couple Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly as Charles and Emma Darwin, is a partly biographical, partly fictionalised account, based on Randal Keynes's Darwin biography Annie's Box.

Naturalist Charles Darwin struggles to find a balance between his revolutionary theories on evolution and the relationship with his religious wife, whose faith contradicts his work.

This film thus is a perfect foil to end our week long CounterCulture film festival - with a rationalist who stood against the absurdity of religion and blind faith.

This is aprt of the 5 day CounterCulture film festival at Lamakaan from Wed-Sun 1-5 Jul.

All are welcome.

Bowling for Columbine
Thu Jul 16, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan Lecture Series
Inviting all for a two day workshop on 'Critical Reasoning' by Biju Mathew on Thu & Fri 16, 17 Jul.

Presenting on Day 1 is an Oscar winning documentary by Michael Moore "Bowling for Columbine". The film explores what Moore suggests are the main causes for the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 and other acts of violence with guns. Moore focuses on the background and environment in which the massacre took place and some common public opinions and assumptions about related issues. The film also looks into the nature of violence in the United States.
- The real world is messy and unpredictable.
- Most people knew before the general elections that the BJP would win.

The two statements above both have a ring of truth. And yet they are also contradictory. Unlike the world of Newtonian physics or mathematical abstraction the social world we inhabit is not easy analyzed through the positivist methods of science. The social world is multi layered and analyzable only through an entirely different set of methodologies - methods that seek to uncover the deeper causal structures of real world phenomenon. This two days workshop is aimed at making visible some of the techniques involved in rigorous social analysis - why we might broadly encompass under the rubric of critical Reasoning.

Biju Mathew, our speaker tonight, is a Secretary of the National Taxi Workers Alliance in the USA, a Marxist researcher of labor process and migration and a Professor of Business.
He is an associate professor of Information Systems and American studies at Rider University (New Jersey). Biju is also the co-Founder of Lamakaan.

"In Custody" by Ismail Merchant is one man's struggle to preserve the works of a waning intellectual.
