A Lecture on
Polavaram Dam: Displacement &invitesStories
by
Satish Nainala
Lecture followed by Screening of the short docu drama film on Polavarm Project titled "MANYAM." Q & A
About the topic:
The Polavaram dam project, whose supposed benefits include increased irrigation and water supplies to big cities, is expected to displace around 150,000 tribals across three states. But the population of these villages according to the Census 2001 is much higher —236,834. State officials find it hard to explain the difference of 59,559 while estimating the number of people who will be displaced.
Further, in the past 10 years, the population of these villages would have increased. If one takes into account 15,105 households (60,118 persons) that would be displaced by the two canals, then one arrives at the figure of 317,150 persons affected.
The tribal populations in the going to be submerged areas are articulating their concerns in different forms to thwart such artificial disaster. The resistance of tribal populations against the construction of Polavaram dam, entangled in very complex political circumstances. The main feature of this resistance is the involvement of various People’s Organizations cutting across various political parties and supporting several forms of protest of the tribal population to build up resistance against the construction of the dam.
Brief note about Satish:
Satish Nainala is a full time research scholar from English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad. He is also the General Secretary of the Student Association. He had worked a lot in the area of displacement of adivasis due to development projects by the government.
Synopsis of the movie:
Manyam
Manyam is a short film directed by Rushi Krishna. The film tries to capture the life and lifestyle of adivasis living in the Godavari basin and how the Polavaram Dam project impacts and affects the tribal population, displacement and their livelihood.
Shot entirely on location at Ladakh, 'Frozen' is a journey of imaginative and impulsive teenager, Lasya, who lives with her father Karma, an apricot jam-maker and younger brother Chomo in a remote village in the Himalayas. Pristine snow-capped mountains surround their tiny hamlet and barren harsh land stretches for miles into nowhere. One day the army moves in, settles a hundred yards across their doorstep. The last bit of comfort the family draws from their familiar surroundings changes into a harsh, ceaseless, irreversible conflict. The film depicts the life of this family whose dreamlike existence is interrupted by insurmountable odds, one after the other.
The film has won the following awards:
National Film Awards - Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director Shivajee Chandrabhushan,
National Film Award for Best Cinematography,
Durban International Film Festival - Best Cinematography and Osian-Cinefan Film Festival, Delhi - Special Jury Award.
The award winning filmmaker will deliver a talk on "Idea to Screen" vis a vis his experience of making a National Award Winning feature film on debut - the trials and tribulations, before, during, after and still.

Why Learn Coding?
Not every child needs to learn a programming language, but without some understanding of how code works and how it affects our lives, we may be depriving young people of new avenues to creativity, and valuable skills for the job market.
By learning to be familiar with how coding works and how to program a device, children will learn to think algorithmically and with the ability to apply mathematical concepts to solve problems more efficiently.
What will children learn in this workshop?
In this workshop we will introduce the concepts of programming like -objects, variables, expressions, looping and arrays in an interesting manner and provide hands-on projects for children to explore and develop a proficiency.
No prior knowledge of coding or programming is required, but it is expected that children are able to operate and navigate a web browser and perform simple tasks like typing on keyboard.

Seminar: Agile Entrepreneurs presents:
“4-Week Startup (4WS)” - Product Go-to-Market Strategy for Startups
“4-Week Startup (4WS)” is a proven Go-to-Market Strategy framework for startups to get market validation and traction in 3 to 6 months by enabling strategic collaboration among all stakeholders.
In this 90 minute highly interactive seminar based on actual startups, learn how to optimize for user / customer engagement, while shortening time to market and lowering development costs - in turn leading to features that “emerge” and products that “just work”.
The 4-Week Startup model is built around three simple and powerful abstractions:
Activities are a unit of User/Customer Engagement & UI design that lead to just-in-time User Stories (unit of implementation), eliminating unwieldy Product Backlogs and byte-size feature-creep inevitable with Feature-derived User Stories.
Plans are monthly strategies for user/customer validation for a single core Activity.
Milestones: are major business goals that can be achieved with 3 to 6 monthly Plans
We will show you how you create a single source of truth with three simple, flexible, interoperating models of your product strategy & business plan, and execution capability:
Visioning Phase: Vision driven Features
Go-to-Market Strategy Phase: Milestone driven Activities; and
Agile/Lean Implementation: ROI driven metrics for Agility, Quality, and “Definition of DONE” for User Stories/Activities, and grades for monthly strategic Plans.
The final payoff is when you see how you can map your 4WS model directly into your operational plan for investor pitches. And change them all at will as market realities change.

Excavation and Conservation of Buddhist sites in U.P and Bihar is nothing but a Power Point Presentation of some of the Important sites associated with Lord Buddha in flesh and blood. The rock on which he sat became hallowed one and the message he gave to the world from here still echoes at the doorstep of the Human kind.
In this presentation you will be travelling with some one who himself has excavated some of such hither to unknown Stupas and played an important role in the conservation of the classical sites such as Nalanda, Vikramshila, Vaishali, Kesariya, Sarnath and Kushinagar. Malle later said that the film was his most personal work and the one he was most proud of, it is widely regarded as the crowning achievement of his career. It was initially inspired by a two-month trip to India in late 1967 that Malle made on behalf of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to present a selection of "new French cinema" throughout the country. Filming took place between January 5, 1968 and May 1, 1968 with a crew of two, a cameraman and a sound recordist. Malle arrived in India with no particular plans and financed the trip himself. The resulting 30 hours of footage was then edited down to the 363 minutes of Phantom India. The 105-minute long Calcutta used the footage he had recorded over his three-week stay in that city. Phantom India was shown on French television and the BBC in the UK in 1969. Many British Indians and the Indian Government felt that Malle had shown a one-sided portrait of India, focussing on the impoverished, rather than the developing, parts of the country. A diplomatic incident occurred when the Indian government asked the BBC to stop broadcasting the programme. The BBC refused and were briefly asked to leave their New Delhi bureau.
Had Louis Malle only made Phantom India, he would still hold an honored place in the history of film. Made with a small crew consisiting of cinematographer Etienne Becker and sound man Jean-Claude Laureux, Phantom India is not only a remarkable document of a time and place, but also a meditation on the difficulty of truly knowing the Other. Malle found this work to be inspirational: "In the autumn of 1967 I was asked by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to present in India a series of eight French films... I was supposed to stay two weeks but I ended up staying almost two months... After those two months I realized that although India was impossible to understand for a foreigner - it was so opaque - yet I was so completely fascinated by it that I would have to come back. So I returned to France at the end of 1967, and in a couple of weeks I raised the money I needed... My proposition was that we would start in Calcutta, look around and eventually shoot. No plans, no script, no lighting equipment, no distribution commitments of any kind... It was enormously important for me, and I'm still trying to make sense of it today."
Born to a family of wealth and privilege, Louis Malle emerged in the 1950s as one of the maverick voices of the French New Wave. Unlike many of his New Wave contemporaries, Malle defied the auteurist trappings of the movement by exploring new formal and thematic concerns with each project.
After 37 years of those films, when we are commemorating an year of new governments both at the centre and the state, it will be stark in comparision to see much of India is already same - Good and Badin equalmeasures and not much has changed through these years.

A Talk by Dr. Fakhre Alam, Associate Professor, Department of Urdu, Khaja Mohiuddin Chisti Urdu, Farsi, Arabic University, Lucknow.
Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Lamakaan, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad at 7.00 pm.
The Urdu Ghazal as a poetic form has continued to fascinate successive generations of poetry lovers in the sub-continent. It has remained the most pre-eminent and popular form of poetic expression in Urdu. What makes the Ghazal tick? How have poets in different ages expressed themselves in this seemingly compressed form, some of them becoming immortal through their creative use of themes, language, images, symbols and metaphors? How has the Urdu Ghazal evolved from the times of Quli Qutub Shah, Wali and Siraj, to the age of Mir and Sauda, to its zenith during the era of Ghalib and Momin, to the period of daaGh and Ameer Minai, to the twentieth century represented mainly by AsGhar, Hasrat Mohaani, Faani and Jigar, as also to some extent by Firaq and later by Khumaar and Shahryar, among several others?
What was the influence of some of the path-breaking movements such as the Progressive Writers' Movement spearheaded by Faiz, Kaifi, Majrooh, MaKhdoom and others on the Urdu Ghazal? These questions among others, will feature in Dr. Alam's talk.
Dr. Fakhre Alam is a distinguished scholar, critic, poet and academic of Urdu and Faarsi literature. He has published numerous articles and is the editor and author of several books.

A Lecture on
"Stories from Behind the Walls of Prisons: A sorry state of Indian prison system"
by
Arun Ferreira
About the topic:
The life on the other side of the wall is very different. The prisoners are made to feel like slaves and each one is at the mercy of the authorities. The Indian prison system perpetuates many of the injustices of the penal system set up by the British. For example, inmates of foreign origin or of high caste and social status are routinely imprisoned under relatively better conditions and segregated from those inmates who are poorer and of lower social position. Tribal and Dalit inmates are subject to various forms of abuse, ranging from the denial of visitors and refusal to provide medical care, to prolonged labor, sexual harassment, rape and “concealed” physical and mental torture. Many of India’s prisons date back to the era of British colonial rule, with thousands of prisoners kept in crumbling facilities largely unchanged since the beginning of the last century. The only major all-Indian prison reform ever implemented dates back to the Indian Jails Committee of 1919-1920. This lecture dispels myths, misconceptions and many claims of reforms by the authorities and gives a personal account of the speaker on the gory, plight and merciful conditions of the Indian prisons.
Brief note about Arun Ferreira:
Arun Ferreira is an Indian political activist and cartoonist based in Mumbai. In 2007, he was branded as the leader of the propaganda and communications wing of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). He was acquitted of all charges in 2014. Arun Ferreira was a free man. He reveals the horrors he faced in prison and describes how several others are facing similar situations all around India. He is the author of several articles and books. His recent book “Colors of the Cage: A Prison Memoir” is an eye-witness account of life in an Indian prison.

Khayal Darpan, divided into four parts, totaling a 100 minutes, starts by exploring Pakistan's melodic past, especially in Lahore where south Asia's most famous musicians of early 20th century performed in large concerts as well as small baithaks (homely gatherings) and takias (shrines). It talks about the legendary Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Raushanara Begum, and Nazakat-Salamat Ali, and their discerning local audience who could not be pleased by any substandard music. The partition of India changed the scenario drastically as hundreds of musician families migrated from India to Pakistan, while many Hindu and Sikh patrons of music migrated the other way around. The film looks at the innovative ways in which the musicians struggled to keep their art alive for the new generations.
Synopsis:
While much of the literature on the Partition of India provides disturbing accounts of separation and violence, very little academic research has been done on its impact on the material culture of South Asia, especially the arts, music and other traditional forms. Since the apparent justification for the Partition, the ‘two-nation theory’, recognized Hindus and Muslims as two dissimilar communities unlikely to coexist, it was popularly assumed that the Indian Muslims migrating to Pakistan took with them whatever “belonged” to them, leaving behind the “purer” culture of the Hindus in India. As it seemed like the closing of a chapter on cultural co-existence, new chapters had to be written on both sides of the border to sort out what belonged to whom. North Indian classical music, along with other traditional cultural forms, had to bear the brunt of this tug of war, since it represented one of the most vigorous examples of cultural plurality, besides being practiced abundantly in the regions affected by the Partition.
Yousuf Saeed, an Indian filmmaker from Delhi, visited Pakistan in 2005 on research fellowship to explore the impact of 1947 partition on the cultural traditions, especially the classical music of the region. Spending over 5 month traveling through Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad - interviewing musicians and scholars, attending music concerts, and observing the teaching of music in various institutions, Yousuf not only managed to document some of the surviving practitioners and patrons of art music, but also raised many vital questions about cultural identity, nationalism, legitimacy of music in Islam, Pakistan's popular culture and its affairs with India, and the survival of classical music itself in South Asia. The result is a feature-length documentary film, Khayal Darpan, highlighting some well-known as well as many lesser known but talented musicians of Pakistan, breaking many stereotypes about the country.
About the Filmmaker:
Graduating from Jamia Millia’s Mass Communication Research Centre (Delhi), Yousuf Saeed started his career in television with the Times TV (Times of India) in 1990, co-directing the science series Turning Point. Later, Yousuf directed many documentary films for Doordarshan and other institutions, including a series on Ladakh and one on the Sufi poet Amir Khusrau. His short films Basant, The Train to Heaven and others have been shown at prestigious international venues such as the universities of Harvard, Boston, Columbia, Chicago, Texas (in the US) and of Heidelberg (Germany), and Vienna (Austria). His other recent films are Qasba Sanskriti: Amroha, Making of the Taj, and Khusrau Darya Prem Ka, among others. He also wrote the illustrated book Muslim Devotional Art in India (Routledge, 2012).
