"Encountering" accountability
Sat Apr 18, 6:00 PM
Lamakaan Lecture Series
In all modern democracies, the designated officers of the state are authorised to use force against citizens. The operative word here is designated and authorised. In other words, all use of force by such officers is subject to regulation and open to scrutiny. It is important that transparency and accountability are demonstrated in such regulation and scrutiny.

Against the backdrop of the incidents in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh and Alair, Telangana earlier this month, resulting in the death of 25 persons we invite you to a panel discussion on how the standards of regulation and scrutiny of the actions of the policemen are being adhered to.

The panelists joining us include representatives from Jeevan Kumar, Lateef Mohd Khan, Raghunath and Zaheeruddin Ali Khan (Siasat Editor), Anant Maringanti and Sajaya Kakarla.

All are welcome to this critical learning in an increasingly Kafkaesque state.

'The Economics of Happiness' features a chorus of voices from six continents calling for systemic economic change. The documentary describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm - an economics of localization.

The catalyst - A Film screening
Sun Apr 26, 4:00 PM
Shadow Puppet Creations
An evening for cinema with the Screening of ‘The catalyst’ written & directed by Vaishnavi Sundar. It’s a story traversing moral dilemmas that create an incongruence between good and bad.

It is inspired by a short story written by Kartar Singh Duggal, which was set in pre independent India. Though cinema has showcased films with the undercurrent of moral dilemma time and again, it is fascinating how the topic is still just as relevant today, as it was in the pre independence era. This film tackles the perennial and perturbing financial inadequacy that blights the people at the bottom of the pyramid. A man’s attempt to find a bit of black or white in this interminably greying society! In short, this is a tale that concerns all of us – it just depends which side we see it from.

All are welcome.

Entry – Free

Note: Screening will be followed by discussion with film maker & her crew

Karl Marx Bambai mein - A Satire
Sat May 2, 7:30 PM
Rangrez Thetre productions
Rangrez presents a satirical play on the eve of this May day "Karl Marx Bambai mein" on Sat 2nd, and Sun 3rd May at 7:30pm.

The strongest point of the narrative directly connects throughout the play with variable issues which relate through the issues our country is facing in contemporary times, though the play was written a century earlier, through western / American situations and problems.

The frustration of the people, economic crisis of our country, economical gap between rich and struggling classes, the monarchy of the system - All situations dealt through this play are mirror images of our country and many developing and third world countries.

One most curious point which excites Rangrez to perform this play is
- That Karl Marx represented the play in a satirical, yet comical & funny narrative…!!!
- Yes the play is talking about Marx theory, history of that time and seems a bit overloading but it unfolds in a mesmerizing and entertaining way, indeed.
If a person need to know about historical characters or events he can anytime surf internet in this digital age or can visit a library and can have access to many dimensions added to the specific event or character he is looking for. But the narrative and core issue of this play is so quirky that hatches true magic and aesthetic orgasm to the viewer’s eyes. People watch theatre for entertainment and social responsibilities. This play is perfect from every aspect of theatre. That’s makes me excited towards the performance of this play.

Writer Howard Zinn Note About the play "Marx in Soho"

"I first read “The communist manifesto given to me, I am sure, by young communist who lived in my working class neighborhood when I was about seventeen. It had a profound effect on me, because everything I saw in my own life, the life of my own parents and the conditions in the united states in 1939 seemed to be explained, put into a historical context and placed under a powerful analytical light.

I wrote the play at a time when the collapse of the Soviet Union brought an almost universal exultation in the mainstream press and among political leaders not only was “The enemy gone” but the idea of Marxism was discredited. Capitalism and the :Free market” had triumphed. Marxism had failed. Marx was truly dead. I thought it important, therefore to make it clear that neither the Soviet Union nor other countries that called themselves “Marxist” but had set up police states represented marx’s notion of socialism. I want to show marx as angry that his theories had been so distorted as to stand for Stalinist cruelties through this play.
Those who read “Marx in Soho” may wonder how much is historically accurate. The major events in Marx’s life and in the history of the era fundamentally true: His marriage to Jenny, his exile to London the death of his three children, and the political conflict of that time. The Irish struggle against England. The main characters he talks about are real the members of his family his friend Engels his rival Bakunin. The dialogue is invented but I have tried to be true to the personalities and the thinking of the characters, though I may be taking liberties in imagining his ideological with Jenny and Eleanor. On a few occasions, as in his description of Napoleon lll , I use Marx’s own word.

My hope is that “Marx in Soho” illuminates not just that time and Marx’s place in it, but our time and our place in it".

Demystifying Thalassemia !!!
Fri May 8, 5:00 PM
Aarohi Blood Bank
On International Thalassemia Day presenting an Interactive Awareness Session "De-mystifying Thalassemia".
Thalassemia is a blood disorder where there is progressive anemia due to abnormal Haemoglobin formation. 4 % of us carry the risk of giving birth to a child with Thalassemia. WHO predicts that 1 million people will have Thalassemia in the next 10 years.
In India, about 80 to 90 % of the babies born with this disorder die within a few years of birth. Untreated Thalassemia can even lead to death in the First Decade of Life! A child with Thalassemia needs a Blood Transfusion every 3 to 4 weeks throughout its life to survive. Regular Blood Transfusions are one of the key Supportive treatments required for survival of the child.
Our Endeavor
Our mission is to enable availability of safe blood at an affordable price to those who can afford and issue free and safe blood to those who cannot. To enable this ABB encourages voluntary blood donation and adopts a policy of zero replacement blood donation to arrest the clandestine sale of blood. They further optimize the usage of blood by preparing blood components and encouraging their usage.
The contribution of our donors has been invaluable in our endeavor to achieve our mission. However we are forever challenged to sustain, due to the increasing operating costs of running the Blood Bank. A healthy donor pipeline alone can support us to achieve our mission of providing safe and reliable blood to those who cannot afford it. We solicit your assistance in any form to keep this noble initiative alive - so as to enable us to bring a smile to as many Thalassemic children as possible.

Making friends with X and Y
Sat May 9, 10:30 AM
Swathi Pasumarti and Ananth Teja Mahankali
A fun session on algebra for school students

Algebra was made to simplify mathematics. It is the art of establishing patterns and making it independent of numbers. That is where our friends x,y and zs come in.

However, in the fear of this representation, children often fail to understand the beauty of the subject. They fail to understand that x, y or z can be replaced by any and every number to hold good, hence they have no significance.

This session has been designed to drive that fear away. We use physical objects to represent algebraic equations and solve them. This helps children see the insignificance of xs and ys and the ease with which they can be replaced with anything - physical objects in this case.

It will help children to take a new perspective of familiarity with Algebra.

Net Neutrality-Lets Get Together
Sun May 10, 3:00 PM
Indian Startups
What is Net Neutrality?

Net neutrality (also network neutrality, Internet neutrality, or net equality) is the principle that Internet service providers and governments should treat all data on the Internet equally, not discriminating or charging deferentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication.

What happened recently?

In March, telecom regulator Trai released a paper inviting comments from users and companies on how over-the-top services should be regulated in the country. It has asked stakeholders to send suggestions by April 24 and counter-arguments need to be submitted by May 8.

The committee has decided to hold a meeting with the Multi-stakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) on April 27 to discuss net neutrality.

The terms of reference of the committee are - to examine the pursuit of net neutrality from a public policy objective, its advantages and limitations, to examine the economic impact on the telecom sector that arises from the existence of a regulated telecom services sector and unregulated content and applications sector, including over-the-top (OTT) services.

Net Neutrality is in the Public Interest

The desire for a level playing field on the Internet is shared overwhelmingly by consumers. Over the last two weeks over 10 lakh of India’s best-informed citizens have written to TRAI to ask it to uphold equality on the Internet.

Many foreign nations share these views as well. Several, most recently Brazil, have passed laws to ensure “network neutrality” or non-discrimination by ISPs; many more countries like the US and European Union are in the process of doing so.

Let's get together to discuss on Net Neutrality and come up with an action plan to support initiatives that are geared towards helping net neutrality. Let's come forward to do something hmm..do everything to save the Internet.

Movie making is a costly affair. With foreign locations and ever increasing logistics, operational costs, movie making is still a difficult business proposition. This talk will explore the processes involved in making a low budget movie and how to streamline the entire budget management and creative aspects.

Synopsis of the movie:
I n k e n n a l l u
The movie is a gripping tale of three generations of a rural agricultural family, their sufferings, struggle & sacrifices for the survival against the age old feudal system in Telangana region. It's a realistic movie, targeted liberation of Telangana from economic plunder, political suppression, social discrimination and cultural affront. In a nutshell, from internal colonization. The movie deals with the Telangana movement particularly. It also showcases that the Doras of Telangana were the people who had actually exploited the people. Shot in the backdrop of 1947, the movie showcases that the Doras are the reason for the illiteracy in the region and have sold their contracts to Andhra people.

The film also presents the aesthetic values, culture & traditions of Telangana.
Gaddar and Kodandaram gave special appearance in the film. Maa Bhumi Sandhya's song is a special attraction and much appreciated. Legendary poet Dr C. Narayan Reddy has also penned a song for the movie. This movie is another cap in the feather of several other movies made on the Telangana subject.

Cotton for My Shroud - film

LAMAKAAN LECTURE SERIES

presents
Screening of the movie

Cotton for My Shroud (2011)

Directed by: Nandan Saxena & Kavitha Bahl
Duration: 90 mins.

Screening followed by Q & A session and discussion with Agrarian Expert B Ramakrishna Rao

About the topic:
Following a U.S. cimplant to the World Trade Organization, India had to open its doors to foreign seed companies. Within a few years, multinational corporations had taken over India's seed market in a number of major crops. Now only GM seeds are available at the shops, requiring India's farmers to pay an annual royalty. The GM seeds are much more expensive; they need additional fertilizers and insecticides and must be re-purchased every season. While large farms have prospered, the majority of farmers find it increasingly more difficult to make a living off their land.

Farmers, not just in Maharashtra but elsewhere, from formally self-sustaining communities, are being systematically forced into suicide by their mounting debts imposed by multinational companies. So many lives lost in the same community cannot be simply a series of suicides, it is a genocide. Yet the enormity of these preventable deaths has been overlooked by politcians and by the press. The film subsequently questions what the value of a life is. How is it possible that one life could be considered more valuable than another?

Synopsis of the movie:
Cotton for My Shroud
Cotton for my Shroud investigates the ongoing farmer suicide crisis in India and the culpability of the multinational Monsanto and the Indian government. It examines the strategy of multinational corporations to control seed supply, and corrupt politicians' willingness to help in this second colonisation of India.

Sun May 17, 4:00 PM
Lamakaan Lecture Series
