Queer Campus Hyderabad
Queer Campus Hyderabad (an informal group) QueerCampus Hyderabad is an agglomeration of queer youth in Hyderabad. The focus group that we like to concentrate on is students though we entertain no age biases. This group was started, and is run by students. The main aim remains to create a safe space for students to come out and talk, express and be themselves. The basic problems such as bullying, coming out, acceptance, awareness, career guidance etc., are taken up by us. We conduct meetings every weekend on a specific pre-decided agenda though there is no compulsion to stick only to the topic. QCH is more of a support group that works as shoulder to cry on, a hand to hold you up, a hug to keep you warm and a smile to make your day. We started off recently on July 21st 2013, we conduct meeting every week and do an event every month. Till date, we've had 3 events like Queer art meet, Queer Film screening, Queer sensitization stall at Seva Mela (joy of giving week), Queer Carnival at Lamakaan, Trans Monologue by Pritham Chakravarthy at Lamakaan and Queer Film Fest at Annapurna Studios. We want to conduct an event, which is open for all (not only Queer people). Carnival is a festival marked by merriment and procession". This holds true to some extent for our event too. This is the first shot at our annual carnival. The most basic aim is to create an ice breaker for burgeoning diversity of humanity to interact.. Well, the few events that we have planned for the carnival are as below: Flea market Cultural events: • singing and dance • Drama and Theatre • Art gallery We abide to rules and regulations of Lamakaan, Please kindly do offer us space so that we can conduct our event. ChenaKintu Ajana- Jatra Folk art
Sun Jan 25, 7:00 PM
Sumanapati Reddy
‘Chena Kintu Ajana – Known Strangers’: A synopsis.

The history of jatra, a popular folk theatre form of Eastern India, dates back to nearly 400 years being one of the oldest performing arts of India. One of the most vibrant chapters in the history of this art form is that of female impersonators. For decades, female impersonators held centre stage across suburban and even urban Bengal when the idea of woman playing themselves on stage, was not accepted by society.
‘Chena Kintu Ajana – Known Strangers’ captures the lives and times of 15 female impersonators representing the last generation of such actors in jatra. The history of female impersonation in the art form has also been weaved in through reference to Chaitanya (15th century) and Gopal Ure (19th century). The 96 minutes film tries to showcase the acting nuances of each Rani (as impersonators were popularly referred to), reasons why they took up acting in female characters as a profession, characters portrayed by them and its significance, the popularity they enjoyed among the masses, changes in their fortune once women started appearing on stage and also their life off stage marked by extreme financial hardship and mental turmoil.

The film includes performances by the two surviving Ranis and also a new age impersonator. Six songs have also been included to give viewers a feel of the time. The content of the film also includes interviews of surviving Ranis, family members of actors who are no longer among us, jatra experts and jatra company owners.

Eshwar Allah Tero Naam
Fri Jan 30, 7:30 PM
Nishumbita Cultural Organization
NISHUMBITA WOULD LIKE TO BRING FORTH THE "KADHWA SACH" & THE AGONY OF "INDIA - PAKISTAN - PARTITION" THROUGH... KHADER KHAN’S- ESHWAR ALLAH TERO NAAM.

As the title suggests, the present play is based on communal harmony. India has many epithets, like land of regions, land of many languages, etc., but the beauty of this land is marred by an unwashable black mark on its character, the virus of communal hatred. This worm has eaten into the Indian social fabric and has taken such deep roots that there is an imminent danger of a collapse in the system. The present play set in the pre -independence setting looks at the impregnable pain and deep scars of partition. Set in a lunatic asylum, the play looks at the society from the eyes of four lunatics, a Hindu, a Muslim, a rebellious young man and a displaced king. The reasons for their condition and their accusations against the society and systems of oppressions form the central plot of the play. Though the play is set in the times of partition, the message applies to the present day, like for example the statement of the Rebellious young man .We are not lunatics, the people outside are, that is a society of killers, a society of marauders, a society of murderers. In the light of EVERYDAY happenings of communal hatred, how true are these words! Pause for a while and think...

Directed by Rathna Shekar Reddy

Court Martial is a gripping, engrossing and powerful play written by Swadesh Deepak. It is the story of a recruit Ramchandar who is accused of killing his senior officer and injuring another. Ramchandar's trial brings startling facts into light that questions the norms of society. This Court Martial is presided by war veteran Col. Ramchandar's trial is not only a fight for his life but a fight for a bigger truth. A truth that is more important than his own life.

Development Urbanism
Sun Feb 1, 7:00 PM
Hyderabad Urban Lab
Development urbanism - an alternative to the "smart city" concept.
- a Talk by Henrik Valeur.

History bears out that urbanization can be used as a means of lifting people out of poverty. But can it also be a means for building up understanding, care and respect for other human beings and for nature?

The processes of urbanization are complex and dynamic. We should not pretend to be able to control them – or even to predict their outcome, which will be determined by an infinite number of individual circumstances, causes and motivations. But this does not mean that we should refrain from trying to push and influence the development in a certain direction. Pushing the development in a more “sustainable” direction will require a more holistic and collaborative approach that would allow for a more comprehensive understanding of both the problems and the possibilities.

Henrik Valeur will discuss some of the problems related to the urban transition of India, including the air pollution, the contamination and depletion of fresh water resources, the precarious food situation, the lack of proper housing, and various environmental and human health problems related to motorized transportation. He will also propose a number of possible solutions, including the use of plants and natural ventilation to create clean indoor air, the revitalization of an existing system of water canals, the creation of vertical kitchen gardens in a rehabilitation colony, a strategy for making an entire neighborhood car-free and a design for self-designed, low-cost housing.

Henrik Valeur is an architect-urbanist, an independent researcher and the founder and creative director of UiD – a networking urban consultancy and a pioneer organization in the field of collaborative and participatory planning and design. As the curator of the Danish pavilion at the Architecture Biennale in Venice in 2006, he conceived and orchestrated the project, CO-EVOLUTION: Danish/Chinese Collaboration on Sustainable Urban Development in China, which was awarded the Golden Lion for Best National Pavilion. He recently published the book India: the Urban Transition – a Case Study of Development Urbanism, which is based on his experiences teaching, researching and practicing in India since 2010. The book was commended by the distinguished Indian architect Rahul Mehrotra, Prof. and Chair of Urban Planning and Design at Harvard University, who said: "The fine grain reading of issues in the Indian city is an important contribution so is the attempt to connect so many dots to make sense of the moving targets we encounter in Urbanism in India.”

Swadesh Deepak's
"COURT MARTIAL" A play in Hindi

Directed by Rathna Shekar Reddy

Date: 31st Jan, 2015
Time: 7.30pm
Venue: Lamakaan, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad

Court Martial is a gripping, engrossing and powerful play written by Swadesh Deepak. It is the story of a recruit Ramchandar who is accused of killing his senior officer and injuring another. Ramchandar's trial brings startling facts into light that questions the norms of society. This Court Martial is presided by war veteran Col. Surat Singh, accustomed to the brutality of life but is left completely unarmed and broken during the course of this trial.
