Global Intraprenuer Meetups
Wed Sep 3, 7:00 PM
Ritika Sood
Lets come and celebrate the spirit of Entrepreneurship.
Social Enterprise community by IDEX is engaging in the conversation on intraprneuership. Driving innovation from within an organization can be quite challenging, but it’s even more challenging when the problems you’re tackling – such as climate change or poverty – are not always well understood or overtly connected to the business strategy. We believe in celebrating what we want to cultivate- so we want to celebrate intraprenuers and engage in dialogues that help to foster intraprenuership.

All are welcome.

MT Khan memorial meeting
Sun Sep 7, 10:30 AM
Burgula Narasinga Rao
Friends and comrades of Mohammed Tajuddin Khan (fondly called as M.T.Khan) gather at Lamakaan for reminiscing their memories of their favorite friend.

The Passing away of M.T.Khan on the morning of 20th August, 2014 has saddened all those who are concerned with Civil liberties, human rights, democracy. In the demise of M.T.Khan Telangana and Andhra has lost a great champion of human rights and a fearless fighter against all that is illegal and oppressive.

M.T. Khan was a symbol of Hyderabadi culture and civilization. Though he was born and brought up in Hyderabad and was educated in Urdu medium, he was very much concerned of the regional people and he learnt Telugu to built rapport with the people of this region. He actively participated in number of peoples’ movements and he himself led a movement against the state oppression and suppression. He always challenged undemocratic attitude of ruling class of the country and due to this, during the period of emergency he was put behind bars along with other activists. Later on he actively participated in Jail reforms movement and succeeded in bringing implementation of reforms in the jails.

He was a champion of civil liberties and human rights and he was a great humanist. He even fought for the rights of prostitutes saying that they are also human beings and they have the right to life. He was a critique of several things and looked at every issue very keenly. But he was a great democrat and never hesitated to accept the people’s opinion and this is the reason that he successfully led the APCLC for almost a decade.

He had multi qualities, command on many languages, worked in Telugu, Urdu and English newspapers. He had good influence but never used for his personal gains and led a simple and straight forward life. He had good relations with all human and civil rights organizations and on many occasions civil liberties took advices from him on various issues. He used to criticize severely and then he would give his expert advice. In short he was a man of big heart, open mind, wit and courage.

All are invited for this memorial organised by Burgula Narsinga Rao.

Soviet literary&Cinema Nostalgia
Wed Sep 10, 5:30 PM
Anil Battula
A Nostalgia meeting for the lovers of Soviet Telugu literature and films. Inviting all for a soviet book exhibition(not for sale), a small meeting about experience with soviet books and painting.

This will be followed by screening of soviet film "Amphibian man" at 7pm.

Amphibian Man is a 1962 Soviet science fiction romance film by Vladimir Chebotaryov and Gennadi Kazansky.

It is an almost fable-like story based upon the eponymous novel by Alexander Beliaev. It focuses on a boy named Ichthyander who was surgically altered to survive under the sea. Unlike traditional science fiction movies of the time the film focuses much more on the concept of love won and lost. It was given the name of Tarzan des Mers before the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs took exception.

The film was the leader of Soviet distribution in 1962 (65.5 million viewers). It is little-known in the West, but has later become a cult classic.

The story is set in a seaside port in Argentina, largely among a community of pearl fishers. The protagonist is the son of a doctor/scientist who was sometime in the past forced to save his son's life by implanting him with gills. Thus he is able to live under water, but must keep his secret from the world. The conflict arises from his falling in love with a pearl-fisher's beautiful daughter. His secret is discovered and the girl's stern father attempts to exploit Ichthyander for his ability. Due to being kept caged under water, he loses the ability to live in the open air, and must now permanently live in the sea. Although set free, the lovers are permanently separated from each other.

Although ostensibly a lost-love-tragedy like Romeo and Juliet, the film has a significant focus on greed and commercial exploitation (of the pearl-greedy fishermen), possibly under the influence of Socialist Realism.

Kinnera Veena - with last artist
Thu Sep 11, 7:30 PM
H.Vageeshan
Lamakaan invites you to an evening of enthralling music with Kinnera instrument with its probably last surviving player.

Kinnera is a stringed instrument like Desi Veena. This Kinnera, of which Mr.Mogulayya is a master, is twelve steps instrument (Generally it is of seven steps). It needs to be played, with both hands. The hallow pumpkins and the bamboo are the main stay of the instrument which enhances the resonance and makes the instrument melodious. The artist sings folk tales of heroes and legends.

This indigenous instrument was once very popular in the Deccan. With times and advent of electronics instruments, it is on the wane - perhaps extinct.
Sri Moguliah is perhaps among few living bards who can play this instrument and perform. The enthralling singing accompanied by this string instrument is an experience to live up. Mogulaiah wants to be not just be recognized as a performer of this wondeful instrument, but preserve the art of it.

All the connoisseurs of art of bardic tradition of singing are welcome.

Entry - Free (Voluntary Donation is welcome to support this struggling artist)

Gas Wars -Book intro &Open Forum
Wed Oct 1, 6:30 PM
Paranjoy Guha Thakurta
Lamakaan invites you to an evening of Book introduction of "Gas Wars: Crony Capitalism and the Ambanis" - a book written by Paranjoy Guha Thakurta and followed by a discussion with P. Sainath and other guests.

About the Book:

'The two brothers had fought over many issues, but what sometimes got lost in the din of the battle cries was a simple fact: much of the tussle was over India’s natural resources, about how the resources were intended to be mined, marketed and monetised.'

Paranjoy Guha Thakurta shows how the simmering controversy over the rich natural gas reserves in the Krishna-Godavari Basin boiled over into a primetime storm on gas pricing involving the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas as well as the Prime Minister's Office, even as he introduces new dimensions to it. While many reasons have been attributed to the split in the powerful Indian business family, the Ambanis, this book argues that the battle between the Ambani brothers was largely about wresting control over reserves of natural gas that are below the ocean bed along the basin of the two greatest rivers of southern India.

With painstaking research, a meticulous perusal of press reports, as well as a few surprising exclusives, Gas Wars highlights cases of crony capitalism that allowed the Reliance group to blatantly exploit loopholes which were consciously retained in the system to benefit it. Even as the book tells the story of how the country’s largest corporate conglomerate has benefited from the way government policies are structured, it lays bare the alarming facts of a natural disaster waiting to happen due to the ruthless exploitation of the country's natural resources in order to swell the fortunes of a few.'

About the Author:

Paranjoy Guha Thakurta is an independent journalist and an educator. His work experience, spanning more than 37 years, cuts across different media: print, radio, television and documentary cinema. He is a writer, speaker, anchor, interviewer, teacher and commentator in three languages: English, Bengali and Hindi. His main areas of interest are the working of India’s political economy and the media, on which he has authored/co-authored books and directed/produced documentary films. He lectures on these subjects to general audiences and also trains aspiring – and working -- media professionals. He participates frequently in seminars, is a regular contributor to newspapers, magazines and websites and is featured on television channels and radio programmes as an anchor as well as an analyst and commentator.

Heading the discussion panel after the Hyderabad launch of the book will be Ramon Magsaysay Award winner P. Sainath - a journalist focusing on social problems, rural affairs, poverty and the aftermaths of globalization in India.

All are invited to join us for a tea & samosa at 6:30pm followed by the event at 7pm.

Entry - Free.
