Udaan Performing Arts
ABOUT THE PLAY - Is Kambakht Sathe Ka Kya Kare? the play is an adaptation of a Marathi play ‘Sathecha Kay Karaycha’ penned by a noted playwright Rajiv Naik translated into Hindi by Jyoti Subhash.
The story focuses on the tender relationship between a husband and a wife. It narrates the married life of the couple, Abhay an ad filmmaker and Salma a lecturer in college. Both lead a happy married life. Both face different tribulations in their professional lives, but Abhay takes it too seriously and thinks that his colleague Sathe does not deserve the recognition that he gets. On the other hand, Salma loves her work and does not care about the quick promotion and success. She believes that everything should be done with a pure heart. At a peak point, Salma deals with the situation and handles Abhay’s frustration. At the end of the play, both build up a strong trust in the relationship and create a companionship which stands over understanding. The twists and turns and the tribulations the couple faces in balancing their married and professional lives form rest of the story. This play tries to depict that positive attitude can make things better.

Voices of Men - Comedy Play
Tue Aug 12, 7:30 PM
National Organization for Men Against Sexism
“Voices of Men” is a play (comedy) by Ben Atherton-Zeman that aims to address topics such as sexual and domestic violence and sexual harassment in an attempt to combat men’s violence against women. The play uses humor and celebrity male voice impressions to bring these topics to audiences in a way that minimizes male defensiveness. Each male character in the play learns about an aspect of violence against women. The character then comes to realize that he can be both part of the problem and solution.

Ben will do a one man show through which he will address the issues of sexual violence, domestic violence, objectification, gender socialization and gender equity. In the wake of increased attention to the gender issues across the country, we feel this would be an interesting program to stage.

Ben Atherton-Zeman is a spokesperson for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism (www.nomas.org) in the U.S. and is a public speaker on issues of violence prevention. He has given performances and keynotes in 45 American states as well as Canada, England, Turkey, China, South Africa and the Czech Republic. Ben has spoken and performed at colleges, high schools, public theatres, conferences, houses of worship and juvenile detention facilities. For the past twenty years, Ben has worked as a prevention educator for rape crisis centers, domestic violence programs, and state coalitions. He is an advisory board member for the White Ribbon Campaign in the United Kingdom and a blogger for Ms. Magazine.

Lecture by Prof.Kodandaram
Fri Aug 15, 6:30 PM
Hasan Memorial Lecture
Lamakaan launches its Annual Hasan Memorial Lecture on Contemporary Politics with Telangana's Most influential Intellectual.

There is little doubt that Prof M. Kodandaram was one of the leading lights of the movement that has won us a new state. And yet in the very act of realizing statehood, Prof Kodandaram’s vision and role has changed dramatically. If in the heat of political struggle for Telangana his acumen as a strategist and negotiator was in the fore, today he has the task of a visionary and a critic. Having stepped away from an electoral future, Prof Kodandram has emerged as the vision-keeper and compass for the people of the new state.
In his lecture on Friday August 15th, KDR, as he is known popularly will seek to articulate as to why Telangana must and will be different from other new state formations in India, the difference in the politics that produced statehood, the organic relation between people’s aspirations and the new state, and from such a basis articulate the vision that we must aspire for as we 'remake' Telangana.
Lamakaan is also launching its Annual Hasan Memorial Lecture with this engagement with the question of a new vision for Telangana.

Prof Moyed Hasan in whose memory the annual lecture is named was a scientist, a photographer, an environmentalist and a person with deep concern for the lives of ordinary people. His house, that he named Lamakaan (as in the Sufi literary tradition to mean 'an abode for those who travel without any worldly possessions') has now become an important part of Hyderabad’s cultural and political life. The once-in-a-year lecture is dedicated to foregrounding the most important political questions of our contemporary moment.

Prof Hasan left behind an imaginary of what an engaged life is. From science to art, and environment to international affairs he encompassed a vision of how we must live our lives meaningfully. There is no better way to memorialize such a life than to bring it into play with new visions of the future.

Program:
Friday, the 15th August 2014
7:00 PM - Brief Introduction of the Hasan Memorial Lecture Series
7:10 PM - Introduction of Prof Kodandaram
7:15 PM - Lecture by Prof Kodandaram
8:00 PM - Engagement with audience - Question and Answer session.
All are welcome.

iUnschool
Sat Aug 16, 3:00 PM
Sumit D Garg
Unschooling is an educational method and philosophy that rejects compulsory school as a primary means for learning. Unschoolers learn through their natural life experiences including play, household responsibilities, personal interests and curiosity, internships and work experience, travel, books, elective classes, family, mentors, and social interaction. Unschooling encourages exploration of activities initiated by the children themselves, believing that the more personal learning is, the more meaningful, well-understood and therefore useful it is to the child.

Session Format

Students learn by exploring electronic / electrical devices. They completely disassemble the device with their own hands and to put it back together.

Small batch of 10 students led by an expert instructor.

No rules, lecture, presentation, video, assessment, test or any other expectation from the students.

Working device may be used for demonstration. Non-working devices are used for practice by students.

Students are given a complete free-hand on whatever they like to do with the equipment.

Sufficient safety precautions will be taken by the instructor.

2 hours of unbridled fun.

Devices Used

Laptop, Mobile, Tablet, Desktop, Printer, Telephone, TV Set, Pressing Iron, AC, Refrigerator, Washing Machine, Solar Panel, UPS, Invertor, Flashlight, Fan, Dynamo, Walkman, VCR, Radio, Camera, Audio/video tape, Fax Machine, Calculator, Air Cooler, Geyser, Water Pump, etc.

Benefits

Students use their curiosity and creativity to learn on their own.

They develop a fearless attitude towards technology and science.

They discover that these devices are not as complex or mysterious as they seem to be.

Students & teachers relate to these sessions during regular class slyllabus.

Unschooling transforms students into explorers by giving them real world, hands-on learning.

We may never know all the benefits of unschooling as they are beyond our comprehension.

iUnschooling ... The Road Ahead

This method can be applied to all subjects.

Various other formats can be developed.

Hindi Play - Shakkar Ke Paanch Dane
Written by - Manav Kaul Design & Direction - Saurabh Gharipurikar Performed by - Siddhesh Dharmadhikari
About The Play - Rajkumar has been requested to write a poem for a compilation to be published. If you knew Rajkumar you’d realize the absurdity of the request. In an hour long monologue, Rajkumar tells us about his unremarkable life in his nondescript village and the five grains of sugar – the five people – who have stood out in this drab life for reasons stranger than fiction. The filmy mother; her poet brother Pundaleek; Raghu, the school hero; old man Radhey; and the anonymous ‘Truckwala dost’ . As Rajkumar talks, the five grains become a single life-game that he has been unknowingly playing for years…and Rajkumar realizes that everyone has a story inside them.

Wed Aug 27, 6:30 PM
Saichand Tripuraneni
Raithu Bidda is a 1939 Telugu social problem film directed by Gudavalli Ramabrahmam written by Tripuraneni Gopichand. It is a social reformist film during the period of British India, at the time of battle against Zamindari system. The film was banned by the British Administration in the region. Ironically it was produced by one of the Zamindars of the time Challapalli Maharaja. The film had a public re-release in 1948.

The film is a seminal reformist melodrama critiquing the Zamindari system from the viewpoint of the Kisan Sabha agitations in Andhra Pradesh. Small-time landowner Narsi Reddy (Raghawan) borrows money from a shavukar who represents the major zamindar (Sitapathy) of the village. When Narsi Reddy votes for a peasant candidate (Kosaraju) rather than for the political party supported by the landlord, his son is attacked and he is publicly humiliated.

The screening is to commemorate the 100 years of the film industry, the director, the writer and their contribution to the industry.

Raithu Bidda - Film screening
