Prison Stories- by Dr.GN Saibaba
Thu May 26, 5:00 PM
Lamakaan program committee
Join us for an evening of interaction with Prof. GN Saibaba at 5pm on Thursday 26th May at Lamakaan as he narrates stories from his arduous time in prison for opposing state atrocities against Adivasis.
GN Saibaba is a professor of English at Delhi University. He’s also 90% disabled. Saibaba was arrested from Delhi University in May 2014, and charged under Section 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act . Under this section of the UAPA anyone who is a member of an unlawful organisation or a terrorist group, can be prosecuted. He spent over 2 year 5 months in Nagpur Central Jail, Until the supreme court intervened and released him on bail recently.
Arundhati Roy has claimed that the persecution of Saibaba has less to do with the charges against him and is more about his opposition to ‘Operation Greenhunt’ – the military offensive started by the UPA government against Maoists in 2009.
Like many other activists, Saibaba saw the operation as an attempt to kill adivasis who were refusing to give up their land for big corporations. He helped organise protests in several cities and spoke against the operation in the international press.
All are welcome.
