A VILLAGE OF ONE: Song Cycle With Soul.

American musician, composer and director Paula Jeanine Bennett brings an evening of her folk opera for all folk, "A Village Of One" (AVOO) to Lamakaan. AVOO is a music and theater piece that has traveled to Indonesia, Morocco and recently Bhubaneswar, Odisha, at the Kalanirvana Art Center. It is work that addresses the loneliness of the modern soul backlit by village sensibilities and illuminated by catchy songs - and solar lighting! For this presentation, Paula will talk about her recent experiences adapting the piece in India and share her compositions.
The audience will be invited to raise their voices too

About Artist:
Paula Jeanine Bennett, born in Cleveland, Ohio, the heartland of the USA, is a vocalist, percussionist, composer, lyricist and cultural arts activist. Her long and luminous association with Indian music began in 2001 when she was invited to participate in the elite Jazz India Vocal Institute program in Mumbai. She has returned to India many times and participated in a variety of festivals and concerts, most notably at the NCPA, the Kala Ghoda Festival and the Capital Jazz Festival. Paula has adapted numerous ghazals and thumris and was presented by the American Center in a 5-city tour of Western India performing this material in collaboration with local ensembles. She has also composed new material reflecting her deep love for the pure voice exemplified in North Indian classical traditions as evinced on her release on India's Mystica Music, "Melody Sky" (with guitarist Lee Boice).
She lives on the Brooklyn waterfront and can see the Statue of Liberty from her rooftop.

“Eunuchs: India’s Third Gender”
Wed Feb 13, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan An Open Cultural Space
“Eunuchs: India’s Third Gender”, exploring the ancient tradition of the Hijras of India and how their life style has changed from healing gurus to prostitution in modern India.

Michael Yorke : As an anthropologist I had always relied on talking to the Indian Hijra community wherever I was doing research. They had some of the most analytical and critical minds among rural agricultural people. Not having access to land in a patriarchal society, and not being able to nurture a family, they were a community of people who relied on their wits, intellect and intelligence to make a living. Whenever I needed to know why a tradition was followed, they never jut said “because my grandfather did it”; they would search out the human motivations and historical reasons for habitual mode of conduct. They were a people always free from received ideas. They were an uninhibited group of free-thinkers. They were the most valuable informants an anthropologist could have.

While discussing this with a friend of mine in Delhi, who had once married into a grand Rajasthani regal family, she said that when living in an old fashioned zenana, she had relied on the Hijra guards of the zenana to adjust to her new life. So together we determined to make a film exploring the profound and ancient tradition that India maintains to accommodation people of transgender inclinations in a society where masculine and feminine role are so widely separated. Her contact with the ancient and traditional hijras of Ajmer gave us the most extraordinary access to this otherwise hidden and deeply private world, that finally took us into the world of modern hijra prostitutes in Hijra Gully in Mumbai.

This film is an anthropological insight and analysis into the ancient Indian tradition of transgenderism for a western audience where transgender issues have only recently become an issue of great social concern.

Blood Donation Camp
Sat Feb 23, 10:30 AM
Rotary Club of Hyderabad - Sarath Babu Rayaprolu
Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person — the gift of life. A decision to donate your blood can save a life or even several if your blood is separated into its components — red cells, platelets and plasma — which can be used individually for patients with specific conditions. Donating blood is an active way of helping others and the whole of society. Donating blood is a lifesaving act. By donating blood you can save lives.

Keeping the above noble gesture in mind on the occasion of Rotary Formation Day, Rotary Club of Hyderabad and Twin Cities Rotary Club proposes to conduct a Mega Blood Donation Camp in association with the Indian Red Cross Hyderabad. It is proposed to conduct the camp in 15-20 places across the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad on the 23rd of February 2019.

The blood collected during the camp will be utilised by Indian Red Cross Hyderabad for the Thalassemia patients and other needy patients.

Mandala Workshop
Sun Feb 24, 10:30 AM
Prerika Arora
The word mandala comes from Sanskrit, and it means “sacred circle.” Mandalas bring along a feeling of relaxation. Designing and coloring mandalas can help you focus. That’s why they’re a great exercise for calming down when you’re stressed. Another thing they do is push aside thoughts and let your creativity flow.

I am Prerika and am conducting a workshop on how to make a mandala on the 24th of February at 10:30AM.
All my works are available at @jab.chai.met.doodles on Instagram.

In 2018, with a lot of diligence, I launched “Pataka” (An online store) on Facebook and Instagram. I have conducted art workshops before and am looking forward to conduct more of them this year. 🙂 I have also judged various art contests and competitions for schools and colleges in Hyd. I was the regional winner in the red bull doodle contest (2017).

Things you will get to learn -

1. What is a Mandala? How to make it from scratch?
2. The types of pens to use.
3. Ideas on making more of them.
4. What else can be done after making a mandala? (Getting them printed on phone cases etc.)

Fees - Rs.1250/- (Includes food and materials)

You can reach out to me at 6309800163 and I will be more than happy to answer your queries! 🙂

I am sure you will take along a lot of memories, meet people with similar interests and take home the mandala you just made for yourself!

Chai is definitely on me! 😀 Hoping to see you.

Thank you,
Prerika

A brief of "Sonic Skins":

All the senses, including vision, can be regarded as extension of the sense of touch - as specialization of the skin. (Juhani Pallasma, The eyes of the skin)

How do sound, language and body relate to each other ?

We use the body as an electroacoustic instrument, bio-captors and sonification devices, trying to to explore the mediating roles played by pseudo-linguistic and non-linguistic sounds in the ways we signal varying internal and physiological states to the environment. Sonic Skins is a live-experimental bio-physical-jam…

Akash Sharma (sound.codes) is an experimental artist whose works range from visual art, data mapping, data manipulation, algorithmic compositions, and sensor-based music. Hamlet- The prince of Denmark is an adaptation of the great Shakespearean tragedy.
When Hamlet comes to attend his father's funeral, he is shocked to find his mother Gertrude already remarried. The Queen has wed Hamlet's Uncle Claudius, the dead king's brother. To Hamlet, the marriage is "foul incest." Worse still, Claudius has had himself crowned King despite the fact that Hamlet was his father's heir to the throne.
Hamlet suspects foul play and with his father's ghost visiting the castle, things get confirmed.

Hamlet has to confront not only evil forces on the outside but also his inner demons.
With things not going his way – Will he battle? Or Will he give up?
With consequences turning worse – what runs in his mind?

‘To Be or Not To Be - that is the question’

The play explores the emotional and physical turmoil of the crown Prince Hamlet, and what happened all way through and how it all ended.
